Food was soo yummy and it's halal!! The owners were very kind and service was fast. It's a cute little family owned business!

Portion of their menu showing that Naan should be included!
    Sheri V.

I've been craving Indian food and decided to get takeout from Al Madina. I ordered the daily lunch special of "Chicken Churry Lunch Box" (which I assumed was a type-o for "Curry") I was told it would be 15 minutes. When I arrived 15 minutes later, the person behind the counter said it would be right out. I heard him open and close a microwave door and got the sinking feeling he was reheating my take-out order since I was the only person there. When he came back with my food, I opened the container and asked where the Naan was. He was difficult to understand but I believe he said "I gave you rice." I pointed to the menu and said "it says right here that it comes with Naan, rice and soda. He then repeated something that sounded like, "No, just rice". He then asked me which soda I wanted and I chose sparkling water. He said it's not included and if I wanted that one, it's $1 extra. He explained that regular sodas are $1 and the one I wanted is $2. I decided not to take any soda because they all contained high fructose corn syrup. He then rang me up and charged me full price! If you're going to charge me $1 extra for sparkling water, shouldn't you charge me $1 less for not taking a soda? To sum up my review... Terrible customer service, false advertising and small portions of microwaved food. Needless to say I would NEVER recommend this restaurant and nor will I go back.

Chicken haleem with garlic naan and mango lassi, very tasty.
    Amy G.

I came here to try the haleem, which I had seen on the menu when I was eating at the superb Pho 99 next door and wasn't familiar with. This is apparently Bangladeshi-style haleem. In Muslim countries, haleem is often cooked for 10-12 hours during Ramadan and served as a street snack to break the sunup-to-sundown fast. It's a big deal in parts of the Middle East, and a restaurant will often bury and cover a cauldron of the stuff to let it cook for extended periods of time. I guess the recommended meat is goat, but I wimped out and and got the chicken. The ingredients are pulverized lentils, meat, and wheat or barley. Best eaten with some kind of naan. I liked it. The garlic naan was soft and tasty--perfect for sopping up the haleem--and the mango lassi was a perfect accompaniment. I wasn't skeeved out by the appearance or cleanliness of the place as some other reviewers have mentioned, but I have traveled and eaten in third world countries and I wonder if these reviewers have ever eaten anywhere outside of the US. I'm not saying you should eat at some place that's disgustingly filthy, but I think applying suburban standards to a super authentic foreign cuisine, and dinging the guy behind the counter for his lack of polished English, is just ignorant frankly. Some of the best food I have ever had was in Vietnam, sitting on little plastic stools next to the street, at a place with zero "atmosphere" but super good food. By the way, here at this restaurant I ate in at, yes, one of the tables from the old diner.

There not a lot if decor either. The music is authentic and they play Indian MTV. The immediately start you out either a beer pitcher of water. For my drink, I'm having a Limca (you just grab it out of the cooler). Limca is an Indian multinational brand of lemon- and lime-flavoured carbonated soft drink made primarily in India and certain parts of the U.S. It contains 60 calories per 150ml can. The formula does not include fruit, relying instead on artificial flavours. In an interview in 2008, Ramesh Chauhan of Parle Bisleri revealed that he had approached the owners of Duke's Lemonade, requesting them to share the formula for the drink with the promise not to make it in India, which was turned down. Chauhan decided to come up with his own formula, which he launched under the Limca brand in 1977. In 1992, when the Indian government allowed Coca-Cola to return for operations, at the same time as it admitted Pepsi for the first time, Coca-Cola bought local soft-drink (soda) brands, from Parle Bisleri owner Ramesh Chauhan including Limca, Thums Up (a cola-like drink), Maaza (a mango-juice based drink), Citra (a clear lemon-lime drink), and Gold Spot (orange flavour). Prior to 1988, the original formula of Limca contained brominated vegetable oil (BVO). After worldwide reports of ill effects of BVO, its use in soft drinks was banned in India. As a result of this ban, the formula for Limca was changed. This is good (artificially flavored or not). For my soup, I'm having the Chicken Hot and Sour (spicy). This is a popular Indo-Chinese soup made with mixed vegetables, mushrooms, soy sauce, herbs and spices. It has a balanced taste that is spicy, tangy and hot. The soup is usually thickened lightly and flavored with ingredients like ginger, garlic, vinegar and pepper. This is good! It's not too salty. It's hot and spicy. Lots of chicken too (it's small chunks and at the bottom). Ceramic plates and metal silverware. That's a good sign! For my appetizer, I'm having the Chicken Makai Kebabs. Otherwise known as Reshmi kebab, this is [technically] a Pakistani dish of boneless chicken marinated in spices, cream, and cashew paste, and then grilled in a tandoor. The name "reshmi" translates to "silk" and describes the kebab's tender, silky texture. Some recipes use ground chicken and cream cheese to achieve this silky texture, creating a "seekh" kebab instead of a "boti" kebab. Indians make it a lot too. This is a LOT to eat! It's steaming hot! It takes a while to cook so be patient. The spices are defining unusual. I like the Indian version of cole slaw too as a side dish except they use of onion. It's crunchy. Yummy! There is a new place opening up across the mall called Sakura Haven. The new venue plans to feature an anime theme with cosplay, a live DJ, karaoke, and other themed entertainment events. Signs were recently installed at their new space. Sakura Haven has been operating as a pop-up at various bar around Connecticut. The new venue is their first physical location. For my entree, I'm having the Chicken Madras. Chicken Madras is a flavorful, spicy, and tangy Indian curry originating from the southern region of India and the city of Chennai, formerly known as Madras. The dish features chicken in a rich tomato-based sauce made with a unique blend of Madras curry powder, which is a mixture of South Indian herbs and spices. The curry is known for its heat, which comes from chili peppers or paprika, and its tangy, citrusy notes. I'm told they use coconut here. You can add naan but I don't eat a lot of bread. This is steaming hot! I love this sauce! It's not very spicy but I like it! What a great meal here!

What really shocked me was that the prices on my bill were not the same as the prices on the menu. Entrees were $1.50 more and sides were $1.00 higher. No mention of it on the menu, by the server, or posted anywhere in the restaurant. Not huge differences - 6 to 15% increases, but I feel a bit ripped off to be shown one price and charged another. One Thursday evening we wanted to go out for dinner but didn't have a plan on where. My fiancé was just driving and we saw Peppers and was like, ok, today is the day! The parking lot was decently packed so that was a good sign. Upon entering, we did not realize how large the inside of the restaurant was. Plenty of seating and there was another room on the other side with even more tables. Our waitress asked if we would like to look at their buffet options and after a quick look, we decided to just order off of the dinner menu for our first time. The place was a tad bit warm for my liking, but hopefully that's only because it was 50° outside. I always get the chicken tikka masala when I try new Indian restaurants as a baseline on how I determine if I liked their curry. My fiancé was a bit more adventurous and tried the Karaikudi chicken. We got two orders of naan, the garlic and bullet, and shortly after our food arrived. I went over to wash my hands before feasting and saw there were sinks lined against the wall.. The soap dispenser worked but none of the sinks had running water. So, I headed over to the bathroom, soap in one of my hands. The tikka masala was on the thicker side of what I'm used to, and was not as red compared to other places. I appreciate the light use of red food coloring, but the thickness of the curry kinda threw me off. I also asked for it spicy but this tasted more of a medium level, when I wanted that nose-dripping sweating feeling. I appreciated the amount of chicken that came with it, but it wasn't as fall-apart tender as I would have liked. It also seemed as though this was made in bulk and just scooped out when ordered because it was just warm and not as hot. Not my favorite tikka masala, but I would try another one of their dishes. My fiancé thoroughly enjoyed his Karaikudi chicken. He ordered his as medium spicy but it came out spicier than my dish. His was also a lot hotter in temperature so I enjoyed it more as well. He had a pleasant experience and would return. The naan was the star of the show. I enjoyed the slight crisp and chewiness and it paired well with the curries. I did not appreciate how the hot curries were served in plastic dishes as that is not the best for your health. For something that high in temperature they should consider investing in ceramic dishes. We were also given cheap plastic black dishes to eat on. I was curious about how much the buffet costed so I asked our waitress. I'm not sure if it was her thick accent but I'm pretty sure I heard $49.99 per person. Holy cow. We were there for dinner time but what an incredibly steep price! My fiancé and I ended up spending around $50 with enough food to also take home with us. We cannot justify $50 per person without food to take home. Indian is an incredibly dense and heavy food to consume! I'm really hoping I misheard her, but if that wasn't the case, we wouldn't try their buffet and just order off the normal menu. Overall, we may return to try again. I was pleasantly surprised at the service and ambiance of the place. From our experience, we usually order take out at Indian restaurants because the service is usually lacking, the vibes aren't right, and there's usually a finger in our food as it arrives to our table. The servers had gloves on here and there was an Indian soundtrack playing in the background. Lots of different people were present and service was pretty tentative. Other than the buffet price, I'd say the normal dinner menu's prices were pretty comparable to most others. The service, naan, and my fiancé's dish were a win, and might be enough for us to return on our next Indian night out.

It's quirky, fun, and definitely gets your attention. We went in with high hopes and hungry stomachs. Here's where we might have gone wrong: Mayabazaar apparently specializes in South Indian food, but we decided to venture into their Indo-Chinese offerings instead. We ordered chicken fried rice, chicken Hakka noodles, chicken lollypop, and--staying closer to their wheelhouse--South Indian thagubothu chicken. The verdict? Everything was just...meh. Nothing had that standout flavor or quality that would make you think, "I need to drive out of my way for this." We were two families, seven people total, and we sampled what felt like a rainbow of preparations from their menu. The food wasn't bad, per se, but it wasn't memorable either. None of us have made the trip back. Hartford County already has a crowded field of Indian restaurants, each claiming authenticity and trying to carve out their niche. Mayabazaar has real potential--the creative branding shows they're thinking outside the box. But potential only goes so far. The execution needs to match the concept. Maybe we should have stuck with their South Indian specialties instead of the Indo-Chinese route. But when a restaurant offers a diverse menu, everything on it should be worth ordering. For now, Mayabazaar remains just another option in an already saturated market.

They had a beautiful Turkish Moroccan Mosaic lamp hanging right at the front. I was surprised they had cocktails and alcoholic beverages available. This is not typical in Middle Eastern restaurants. I first started with their mojito. This was fresh and minty. A delightful cocktail. Their complimentary bread, was pillowy and fresh. Be careful, it is easy to overdo it with this delicious bread. For an appetizer we got a serving of their Babaganoush. This was an excellent pairing to that bread. This was incredibly tasty, you could taste the the eggplant, the olive oil and the lemon juice, together they created a super dreamy creamy combo. I got their version of a Gyro Quesadilla. This arrived with four very generous portions. It was filled with tender lamb and melted cheese. We got a Greek salad to share. This salad was very generous in its size, it was very fresh and tasty. We concluded with their chocolate cake. There were plenty of other traditional dessert options. This cake was very chocolatey and fresh. The top layer was very dark chocolate to me. I have not been to very many Turkish restaurants. I believe the last one was in Springfield. They play Turkish music and the employees are all Turkish (I think). The place is really big. There must be [at least] 40 tables in here. Do not be deceived by the small store front. It is very deep. It's incredibly clean. I could even smell the cleaning chemicals at first. They start me off with a complementary carafe of water. It's nice. I don't believe it is tap water. It must be filtered. They also serve complementary bread with either oil or butter. That's a LOT of bread. A meal in itself! For my first drink, I am having the J.W. Black Label Old Fashioned. This is made with Johnny Black Walker, Elderflower liqueur and Angostura bitters. I've never seen an Old Fashioned made this way. This is classy! They use a circular ice cube to minimize the dilution tine. It is perfectly balanced, nicely garnished (two lemon peels) and has a very unique taste (thanks to the elderflower liqueur). This is good! The menus are very nice too and include pictures. The drink menu does not have prices. The decor is nice with a few ethnic paintings (and a few not filled yet). I like the [artificial] trees in the dining area. They hang cool lights on the walls. Nice, colorful, low hanging chandeliers too. For my soup, I'm having the mercimek (lentil). Mercimek çorbası (lentil soup) is the most popular and widely consumed soup in Turkey. Ingredients are typically red lentils, onion, carrot, potato or tomato, vegetable or light meat stock, olive oil or butter, and spices such as cumin and paprika. This came out quick! This is piping hot! The soup is delicious! Good portion. I like the addition of the crushed red pepper for a little kick. Be sure to sprinkle that lemon on it. I love the elongated spoon. They also bring out complementary bread and butter. No butter for me. The bread is good! For my salad, I am getting the Tabbouleh (this is Arabic not Turkish) made with parsley, tomatoes, bulgur, scallions, lemon juice and olive oil. Look at this monster salad! It is huge! This came out real quick! This comes with a lemon to sprinkle upon them. They have great presentation and tastes fantastic! Be sure to sprinkle the lemon. It's like a chopped salad. The Tabbouleh had a LOT of parsley. For my next drink, I'm having the Classic Martini made with gin, dry vermouth and olives (garnish). This is made with Greenall gin. I've never had this before. It's not bad! The taste is a bit off but is still fine. There are a lot of small, floating ice particles, but I don't care. It does , keep it cool, and melts quick. It has a nice olive garnish skewer too. Very good overall! For my appetizer, we are having the Mized Meze. Meze is a selection of small dishes served as appetizers in Arabic and West Asian cuisines. You know me! I loved samplers! This includes humus, babagannush, eggplant salad, haydari, havuc tarator & antep ezme. Baba ghanoush, also known as baba ganouj or muttabal, is a creamy, smoky eggplant dip that originated in the Levant region of the Middle East. The dish is made by blending roasted or grilled eggplant with tahini, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, and seasonings. Haydari is a type of yogurt dish similar to a thick cacık, made from certain herbs and spices, combined with garlic and yogurt. Antep Ezme is made with tomatoes, hot peppers, green peppers, onions, garlic, walnuts and olive oil. Look at this! You have to love the carrot slices dividing the individual items. There is paprika scattered on top. The server lays down the spoons as he describes each one. This goes great with bread! Wow! Is this good! I love the variety of textures and flavors! For my entree, I'm having the Chicken Kofte (flat chicken meatballs). Spicy please! Chicken meatballs aren't easy to find. This is the best! That jalapeño is hot! The salad has a nice light dressing too. I love the grilled tomato! This flavor is unbelievable! It was also nice to have a few minutes to chat with the owner! For my dessert drink, I'm having the Turkish coffee. Turkish coffee is a rich, unfiltered coffee made from finely ground beans simmered in a special pot (cezve) with water and sugar, resulting in a strong brew with grounds that settle at the bottom. It is extremely fine, like powder, much finer than espresso. Black, for me. I like the metal cup, this way it's not too hot in the hands. This is thick and yummy! For my dessert, I'm having the Pistachio Cake. This is a first for me. The plate is nicely chilled. This is real good! This place is incredible! There is no shortage of leftovers. I have at least two more servings worth. What a fantastic meal!
