Wing Express: A Personal History In April 2001, I had my first ever bite of Indian food. It happened at the urging of my eighth-grade girlfriend, in one of Wing Express' hard orange booths. Back then, the cuisine was an exotic unknown to me. I wish I could say the experience was revelatory, but I didn't even know enough to mix the styrofoam cup full of spicy vegetables with the second cup full of fragrant basmati rice. I ate them one at a time, then reported to her it was too spicy and that the consistency was sludge. I think she dodged a bullet when we broke up a month later. In the intervening quarter century, I became a vegetarian and fell gratefully into the arms of a cuisine that always guaranteed me a raft of options; went off to college and learned to love the uncomplicated boldness of the takeout spot near campus; moved to Arkansas for my first job and gratefully devoured any "ethnic" food I could get when I came back to Connecticut on breaks; became the urbane New Yorker I'd always secretly wanted to be and lived through the city's golden age of fancy Indian that is still blossoming today; got to gorge myself on the real thing when in Delhi last winter for the wedding of a lifelong friend. Three new Indian spots have risen in Storrs in the time it's taken me to transform into my Platonic conception of myself. And each time I try one and then return to Wing Express, I'm convinced they got it right the first time. It's the best malai kofta I've had anywhere. My favorite aloo gobi. The only place I know that sells aloo mataar. It still feels new like it did when I tried it for the first time, still feels like a privilege the way it did when I'd eat it on breaks from being a school teacher rural Arkansas, still feels simple and authentic the way it does when I compare it to the best I've had in New York. Sometimes the past doesn't die or even change; its significance grows as you evolve. The older I get, the happier I am that Wing Express is still here. read more

I'm not very well versed in Indian food, but I thought this place was decent. I had the chicken saag and thought it was pretty good. It had a nice flavor and wasn't spicy, which I appreciated. However, the naan had clearly been sitting out for a while and it was bland and kind of cold. I would not order that again. I had a coupon and the lady at the counter clearly was not happy about it, but she ended up still honoring it. A really odd name for a restaurant serving Indian food and what's even odder is they have wings to go with it....indian curry flavor wings I suppose but I didn't find it on the menu. What they lack in ambience they make up for in taste.Not really great for dining in but if you still want to...u can choose between 5 or so tables. They are open late which is a good thing and I hear the crowd usually picks up after 10. Beware while ordering the portion sizes are large but then we came with a gluttonous appetite and hogged it all up..before I could even get a decent picture for y'all to see. My recommendations would be paneer saag and chicken tikka masala comes with rice and also pairs well with garlic naan...biryanis are also good (if ur like me and like the hyderabadi style this might be disappointing). Don't be fooled by the appearance of this place, Wings Express is a restaurant at UConn that serves some of the best Indian food. When I first visited, I ordered their wings but noticed that they also served Indian food and decided to order that the second time I stopped by. I've had their chicken curry (comes with rice), chicken tikka masala (comes with rice), vegetable samosa, mild buffalo wings, and spicy bbq wings. I have been there several times since my initial visit and have not been disappointed. They offer a relatively wide variety of foods which is super accommodating to halal foodies and vegetarians. Wing Express is truly your quintessential "hole in the wall" place with delicious food. Sure, it's a little odd that they serve wings and Indian food. Speaking for the Indian food only, I'd say this spot has some of the best in the area. The inside feels like a fast food joint. It doesn't have the best ambiance, but it's definitely comfortable enough to hang here and chow down. Our wait to get our food was quite long, so be sure to give yourself extra time. I don't even know where to begin. I am of Indian descent, and though I was born in Chicago, I also lived in India from age nine to 17. India is part of my blood and it is a huge part of who I am. I know Indian food and I am sure that most people of Indian descent would agree with me that the vast majority of Indian food in the U.S. is neither authentic or really good. But Wings Express is fucking legit. As soon as I walked in and saw the picture of Guru Gobind Singh, the little kid with a 'patka', and I said "Sat Sri Akal" to the doting grandmother, I knew this was a legitimate, Punjabi restaurant ... that also sells wings! What a concept? The food was delicious and wholesome and has made me intensely homesick for India ... the food is that good. This is real Punjabi food and what is sad is that most people won't appreciate the food here because in their eyes, it's not "real Indian." read more

I am disappointed with the service I received. I really wanted to like this place because I heard good word about their Indian food. Well then what went wrong? I think that the customers who dined in had a better experience compared to me. I ordered delivery ONLINE for the Goat Birayani ( mixed rice dish with plenty of seasonings with goat meat) I waited for almost 2 hours for my food. About an hour in, I received a call from the delivery guy asking me what my address was when I had already entered my address when making the order online. Mistake #1. Not to mention, I lived on the UConn campus by the way. He did not arrive until another hour later. By the time I got my food, it was already half cold from the condensation inside the box. It was a shame that I paid online along with the tip. I would take that tip back in a heartbeat. As for the Goat Birayani, it came with a small pack of white sauce for pouring on top of the rice. The portion was large considering the price, which was good. The rice itself was alright and as my first time trying goat, I was not a fan. This restaurant is located in a plaza, where you have ample parking space and also close by to the university. So this place is pocket friendly and serves American and Indian food. The decor n seating is just okay! At first we used to pick up veggie biryani on our way to drive - in theatre which is close by this restaurant. After couple of visits, tried their breads and curries. Their one portions are really good to feed two. They have a variety of appetizers, curries, breads and rice... They serve chicken, goat, lamb and also vegetarian friendly. Last night we dropped in to dine with a couple of friends. Seating is a little cramped with a group. We ordered curly fries, chicken wings, navratna korma, saag paneer, chicken tikka masala, garlic naans and a veggie biryani - all for the table, 6 adults and 4 kids. Everyone had good food.... Everything was really good except for the naan... The naans are frozen and they were just heated up... I personally don't like restaurants serving frozen stuffs. Also not sure about other dishes! I can't believe I've never reviewed this place before! The Indian food from Wing Express singlehandedly got me through my four years at UConn, and I have so many delicious memories of feasting on their takeout with my roommates. It's honestly some of the best Indian food I've ever had, and even my Indian roommates thought it was great. The Chicken Tikka Masala, Malai Kofta, and Lamb Rogan Josh are must-orders. Yum! I'm also a fan of the Onion Pakoras and the Samosas. They're all reasonably priced as far as Indian food goes, and they come in large portions. One order of Chicken Tikka Masala made two meals for me easily. My favorite way to eat their food though was to round up a group of 4-5 people and share 2-3 of the entrees. Everyone is happy and stuffed for a price that doesn't break the bank. If Indian food isn't your thing, they also make wings, and that's what they choose to market themselves as. I confess, I don't like their wings and preferred Wings Over if I wanted wings, but if greasy American food is your desire, the Onion Rings are the best-kept secret on the menu. They take regular onion rings and coat them with the same spiced batter they use for their pakoras. The end result is impossibly crisp, light, flavorful onion rings, probably the best I've ever had. They also shove a shit-ton of them in the paper bag, and I found that a small was more than enough for one person. One note of caution: It sometimes takes them a really long time to make and deliver the Indian food. I've waited over an hour for my food to arrive sometimes. No idea why...I'm assuming it has something to do with Indian food taking longer to prepare than wings. Order way in advance and expect to wait. Some things are worth the wait though. The store itself is kind of a dive, and I don't recommend dining in. I've heard good things about their lunch buffet but never got to try it myself. Someday! read more

I ordered the combo meal 18 boneless, Cajun fries and 2 sodas for pickup. I didn't get the sodas which is pretty annoying considering the price people charge for sodas these days. It was also packaged pretty poorly I had Buffalo sauce leaking out of the to go box and bag like crazy. I understand sauce can run but at-least double bag it? Or give out bags without holes in them. I called Wing Express and the manger or whoever answered the phone was very rude and disrespectful. Love their food... We have been going there for a long time. This place is where we had our first Pakoras and Lassi. When our kids lived on campus, we would either go there to eat or take out and eat at their dorm room... now even they have graduated several years ago, we continue to eat their food either there or through take out. Hole in the wall find in the same building that houses Huskies Pub near police station Don't be limited by the name. While they have excellent wings with lots of sauce and rub options this place serves legit Indian. Best shrimp tandoori around, delicious chicken korma and vindaloos that can be flaming spicy. Try the samosas with the mint sauce instead of usual tamarind and you won't be disappointed. There are a few sit down tables but the decor is pretty much bottles for recycling and old posters of uconn hoop from 15 years ago. As Quinn wrote a substantial and accurate review of the Indian food, I will write about the wings. Holy shit. They are fucking miraculous. I am not sure what combination of Spice Road ingredients augment this particular Buffalo sauce, but it is: A.) Different than any wing sauce I have had, and B.) Better than any wing sauce I have ever had These are amazing wings. Get them if you are ever in Storrs. The taste explosion that you will receive will reinvigorate your taste buds, clear your nasal cavity and cure erectile dysfunction (or make your uterus the fertile crescent, if you are a lady) I miss these wings. Last night, while getting together with a friend of mine who lives in Coventry, I yelped the Storrs area and was surprised to find this highly rated establishment. I picked up my friend and we made our way through the abandoned UConn campus, until our GPS lead us to a dingy, overgrown little plaza near the campus police station. After getting out and circuiting the entire building (the Wing Express sign is on the right, but the restaurant is on the upper left side), we entered with a bit of apprehension and guarded expectations. The seating inside is typical college dive, although the prices are a touch higher (entrees range from $9-12; with garlic naan and a Kingfisher, our meals were $15 apiece.) The naan is a bit buttery for my taste, however, the Channa Masala is quite good (not too heavy, and very spicy). My friend enjoyed his Chicken Curry as well. Overall, we were quite pleased and would happily return to "Wing Express", should we ever again find ourselves in the woody metropolis of Storrs. read more

Best Indian food I have ever eaten! I started eating here before I even started as a freshman at UCONN because my older sister knew about this place. It's a hole in the wall nothing fancy inside but it has always been consistent. I can't even tell you how many times I've eaten here, so many late nights with wings express curry and chicken wings! I recently came back to ct from los Angeles for my younger sisters graduation, this was one place I needed to go before I left. It did not disappoint, it was amazing. We got chicken curry, chicken vindaloo this one has curry tomato paste chicken and potatoes, if you like a little sour taste you'll love this. Also they cater to your level of spicy. I always get hot and it's perfect. The tandoori naan is buttery, the mango Lassis are great! During the week they have a lunch buffet for 7.99 that doesn't disappoint. I ordered wings with all flats. They delivered over 3/4 drums after charging for all flats. When I called to report this the individual on the phone said he was, "having a real hard time caring", despite having charged us a fee for all flats, and stated they didn't have a lot of flats. I asked why they didn't state that from the onset, and he claimed the owner didn't speak English despite the owner telling him we don't have flats and resolving the argument in third person over the phone. Don't really seem to care about costumer service. I considered it an out character circumstance. However, when I went to the store in person the next time it was filthy and the person taking my order asked why I "had to be difficult" when I requested no nuts for my child who had a nut allergy. Ah...that familiar smell. I hadn't eaten here since my days at UConn...and I'm happy to say that nothing has changed. Well, except that they no longer offer the all-you-can eat for 7.95 or so. I went with an 8-pc boneless flavored with garlic parm. Tasty! Also went with a 'bucket' of 32-pc wings, medium flavored. The only downside was the 90 minute drive back to Boston before eating them. Re-heating in the oven dries them out a bit and you lose some of the sauce. Best to eat them fresh while surrounded by the wonderful aroma. read more

The only thing I ordered from this restaurant was the curry chicken. In short, it was the best thing I've ever eaten outside of my home that wasn't fast food. I tried this about 2 months ago with my brother and who enlightened me on this dish. In the city that I live in, many Indian restaurants don't serve curry chicken like this, which is pretty disappointing. The spice level, great. The wings aren't that good, so I really recommend trying out their Indian food. Update: I've eaten here multiple times now and ordered different dishes. I've moved away from storrs for years now and this is still my favorite place for Indian. Ive tried a lot of different indian restaurants but they always have me thinking of wings express. Chicken patia is my go to, with fresh mangos instead of the gross sweet canned ones that I experience everywhere else. Lunch Buffett makes me go home and take a nap, not the best variety compared to other indian buffets but it does the Job of making me Never want to eat again. read more

I ordered a 12 piece boneless chicken and got 9 pieces and the rest were pieces of chicken broken up. The regular pieces were plump and tasty. The ranch dressing was like water with no taste. The fries were the only part of the meal I enjoyed. Probably will not return. For a better wing meal I suggest the Bidwell tavern in Coventry which is closer to my house than Wing Express. read more

Man, I moved away a while ago and I still haven't found any indian food as good as Wing Express. I love this place- it's the standard to which I compare all other restaurants. The rice is fragrant, the servings large, the spice strong. I love it. I know I should save some for later, but no. every time I must. eat. the. whole. thing.
