Authentic South Indian vegetarian food, super plain but clean ambience, mediocre service. Tried the gobi manchurian, the Andhra masala dosa, the kothu parotta, and the poori-sabzi. On hearing that I had ordered the kothu parotta, the chef came out and asked me if I was from South India and said that he was Tamil from Chennai. It's refreshing to have South Indian food in the US prepared by chefs from South India, and that could explain why the food seemed authentic at Udupi. I enjoyed all the dishes, and while they're nowhere close to the South Indian food one can get in Bangalore (where I'm from) the food is significantly better than one can get in a South Indian restaurant in North Indian cities such as Delhi. The food was perfectly spiced (for me, which means that it may be spicier than usual for most other people) and flavourful. My dining partner tried the mango lassi and enjoyed it. The food was very reasonably priced. The service was neither particularly good nor bad. The woman at the counter was not very friendly but quite efficient. The restaurant appears to thrive on takeout/delivery orders, and was relatively empty. We went on a weekday, so it is possible that it gets more crowded during the weekend. The ambiance is totally charmless and food is served on paper plates. The food did take a lot of time to come out, and I'm assuming that this is because they had one chef at the time who presumably was struggling with delivery orders (UberEats and GrubHub drivers kept coming by to pick up food). I don't live in Connecticut; otherwise, I would come far more often. Overall, I recommend this place if you are in the area, but cannot speak to the quality of the North Indian food served at the restaurant. read more

I came here on a Sunday around noon with a friend who recommended it to me because it is a completely vegetarian restaurant. We were the only customers at the time so it was nice and quiet. I noticed it appeared clean and well organized and I enjoyed the beautiful wall hangings. The menu is found on the menu board above the counter where you order. They serve typical South Indian food. I ordered a dosa and my friend ordered an utthapam. Both meals were delicious! This is located next to an Indian grocery store and within a short drive of the temple. I will be back for sure! read more

Great and inventive food, generous portions, fair prices. Zero ambiance, but that's why everybody opt for takeout.

The food is always sooo good! Best vegetarian food in all of Middletown! And for a good price.

We were visiting relatives in the area and decided to have South Indian specialty Dosa and Idli/ mendu vada. See photos of items and seating area. Not fancy but just comfortable like takeout pizza place with seating. Separate bathrooms and self serve plastic fork and spoons. Drinks in bottles at reasonable cost. Good for quick bite read more

Vegetarian restaurant with Great selection of Dosas. Also tried the samosas and methu vada. Food was delivered hot and crisp. Accompanying sambar and chutneys were tasty. Don't expect ambience, it's a fast food style restaurant where you order at the counter and pick up your food and bus your own table. read more

The dining area was Spartans but the food was authentic and delightful. Bravo. A treasure for those who enjoy authentic Indian fare.

Authentic South Indian food. I was dying for a dosa with sambhar yesterday and it satisfied! Loved the chutney too, and rasam- one of my faves. read more

Happy Diwali! Just finished feasting on dosa, pakora, rasam and channa bhature. Fantastic! Owners speak Tamil so be prepared for a South Indian spiced dishes. So will be spicy for those not accustomed. Great food and super friendly service. read more

Thick baturas and flavourless Chana/chickpeas. I was warned that the cook/management had changed and quality had gone down. The Indian crepes used to be decent here as well, but again now they are soft and with no spice/salt. The 'masala' in the dosas used to be with onions and spices. Now it's just boiled potato with turmeric. Sambar - the lentil soup- was not fresh and required to be heated. Only surviving due to the proximity to the Indian temple. read more

Udupi Bhavan - Medu Wada! - Indian Near Me - Middletown, Connecticut

As a lifetime Udupi customer, once the ownership started changing, so did the quality of the food. I actually held off on reviewing this place because I hadn't been in over 2 years. We were forced back a few months ago while family was visiting, and I was extremely surprised (and relieved). THE FOOD IS GREAT!!! Everything was wonderful, the staff is super nice, quiet but direct. The mango lassi (my favorite) is A1. I highly recommend chili pakoras, rava dosa, idly sambar - a staple, and their chole bhature. The desserts are fantastic too. read more

This is a fully vegetarian south Indian restaurant. The quality of the food gets closer to the quality in India. Prices are relatively cheap. Mysore masala dosa was my favorite. Chikku shake was very good as well. Podi rava masala dosa was spicy, go for it only if you can take spicy food. Poori baaji and medhu vada was good too. read more

This is one of my favorite Indian restaurants in the area. It is more like a cafe... when you enter you walk up to the counter and order your food. I knew what I wanted, but didn't know what it was called, and they helped me. The food was delicious. So much so I ordered two entrees and brought leftovers home. I have a sensitive stomach and the spices didn't affect me at all. The food IS spicy! This coming from and Italian... Note this cafe is vegetarian. You will find no meat here! It's a bit pricy for a cafeteria style establishment, but I think it's worth the good quality! read more

Excellent food and even better service. This is by far the best place to get a dosa. I highly recommend Udupi Bhavan. I will be coming back here very soon! Thank you again for the great experience! read more

My first experience trying dosa and I was impressed! This is a decent size restaurant in a plaza, and it had a steady crowd even though we dined later on a Sunday. Every table had an order of dosa and after trying it I can understand why. The dosa was filling and flavorful. A hidden gem! read more

I really enjoy this Indian vegetarian restaurant the food is very good, served piping hot from the kitchen at a very moderate price. Orders are placed at the counter and delivered to your table when ready. Everything is served on styrofoam plates but you'll over look that minor issue at first bite. read more

Udupi Bhavan - Batura, basmati Rice, Chana Masala and Aloo Palak - Indian Near Me - Middletown, Connecticut

This is a typical South Indian restaurant...we call these kinda restaurants as darshanis (fast food style).... So expect no frills .. The lack of decor may seem unwelcoming but that doesn't put u off esp.when there is so little here in another country reminding you of home... No meat no alcohol.... It's pure vegetarian... And that's never a bad thing for us.....We usually don't eat meat when we visit the temple so for this restaurant it's perfectly stationed. The meals are self service and cutlery is plastic. Service is quick... Staff are friendly. This would often be our stop after visiting the temple but from now that's going to change coz ever since the management has changed the food sucks. read more

we took out food for lunch. It was yummy even after half hour of car ride back in the heat wave. Very good! This spot was recommended to me by a friend to try when visiting the area. Very authentic and delicious. I saw what others had ordered in the restaurant and everything looked very good and other customers were heard talking about how much they were enjoying their food as well. We ordered Veggie samosas, butter masala dosa and Chana masala. My boyfriend and I split everything and were very satisfied portion wise. The dining environment was no frills but the simplified service was an admirable business model. We witnessed a pretty steady flow of customers from couples to large families coming by to dine in and pick up take out, many of whom appeared to be members of the Indian community. The restaurant was clean and food was prepared fresh and hot. I will definitely come back if I find myself in this area again. read more

Bad Experience!!! Poor Quality! Big black fly in food! After the ownership changed, the food changed. I felt that the quality of the food had gone down. Used to love this place, ate here a lot. I still wanted to like it, but now forget about it! Today was my third try since the change. I will never go back, I don't care for the food anymore. Worse is finding a big black fly in my half eaten dosa. Unbelievable! read more

The food is pretty good. We got dahi puris and onion pakoras for appetizers. The dahi puris were decent; a little too spicy for my taste. The onion pakoras were over cooked. The restaurant did replace the pakoras for us and the next time around the pakoras were cooked just right and we loved them. For dinner, my table ordered channa bhatura, onion uthapam, rava dosa, masala dosa and cheese dosa. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals along with some mango lassi. I would definitely recommend coming here but while placing your order, make sure to indicate your spice levels. My only complaint here is that you have to serve yourself. So be ready to set your table and wait in line to get your food. read more

Great restaurant and tasty food. The master is really talented with South Indian dishes

No meat, no ambiance, no waiters, no alcohol. No problem. Because y'know what? Udupi Bhavan doesn't need that stuff. The food outshines everything. I had the pleasure of redeeming a Living Social deal to Udupi Bhavan with a friend last night. Like so many amazing restaurants in semi-unfortunate locations, the restaurant is located in a strip mall on Saybrook Road in Middletown. Menu selections are on boards above cash registers and everything is pretty DIY from ordering at the counter to getting pitchers of water. The staff is fabulously friendly (and lets you bring in wine/beer/whatever from the liquor store next door, although they don't advertise being BYOB) and the food. OH, the food. Between the both of us, we enjoyed the veggie samosas (filling, flaky, beautifully seasoned) baigan bharta, a smoky eggplant curry (one of my favorites-- my boyfriend makes a pretty good rendition!), navatran korma (WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN), fluffy, flaky fried flatbread (poori) and my delicious syrupy-cardamom-laced gulab jamun. The entire meal was remarkable- some of the best Indian food I've ever had. And I'm usually the first in line for lamb, chicken, or whatever meat I can throw in a korma, but this vegetarian selection spared no flavor whatsoever. read more

Udupi Bhavan is still awesome, probably my favorite Indian restaurant of all-time, and one of my favorite vegetarian restaurants. i saw one review say it was cash only, and i know that's not true .. i do think there is a minimum on charge cards though. Lately we have been ordering the thali and a dosa and that's enough for dinner for the two of us and gives us a wide selection of curry and veg and soup and rice and bread, etc .. i can honestly say that i have never had anything here that i did not like. the environment is not fancy, and for me that is fine - cafeteria style with food this good.. winning! read more

My 5th time here - not gotten sick of it yet! I've gotten all the dosas I wanted to try thus far and I'm here to rank them in order of my preference. 1) palak masala dosa 2) Mysore masala dosa 3) Andhra spicy masala dosa 4) veg uthappam 5) special rava masala dosa And of course the iddly (steamed patties) never disappoint. One note though, the "stuffing" of potatoes and onions are never consistent. It tastes different everytime I go; always tastes yummy but it's never the same. What I want to try next are the thalis, chana batura, uppuma and the chaats. Onward and upward! read more

I'm a South Indian and know good South Indian food, being able to whip up everything on Udupi Bhavan's menu with ease in my kitchen. That being said, I'll go back. The place has decent food, and leaves my south Indian heart feeling content. The food is not the best I've had, but is as good as you'll find outside of an Indian family's kitchen. I didn't have 1 favorite dish because everything was just right, not great. So if you're an Indian who's missing the taste of home, or a non-Indian who's looking for something new to try, this is a good place for an inexpensive meal. Recommended. read more

Udupi Bhavan - My Fiance with his giant masala dosa. - Indian Near Me - Middletown, Connecticut

So I returned the yesterday whilst I was in CT. Got myself a Mysore Sada Dosa, which the young gentleman informed me is way smaller than paper masala dosa I had last night n may not be enough. (Yup, he remembers me!) I told him I got my bases covered, I was planning to get a vegetable korma and chai tea with my meal. The dosa was ready first, and guess what, that thing filled me up. Couldn't even eat another bite after the Mysore Sada dosa. Packed the vegetable korma to go, went for an hour walk to make space in my stomach and ate the korma at 9PM. So full but the food was really good. I'd say i am more impressed with the paper masala dosa than the other two. I will definitely return when I am in the area again. read more

Great place for vegetarian south Indian food. I usually get my favorite dosa here which is the Rava dosa. The other dosas such as Paper, Masala, and Paneer and cheese are pretty good too. Their coconut chutney and sambar hit the spot. They do have some North Indian items such as chole bature and onion pakora which were not bad. For drinks, try out their mango lassi and masala chai. Their interior seating area is not the best but the food makes up for it. Everything is self serve and the water jugs and plastic silverware are next to the cashier area. The restaurant is not a 5 star but their food definitly is. read more

The place is really awesome for the food. There is not a word on the taste or quality of food. I give them a four star for the ambience and the presentation. Feels like a average desi restaurant. I have tried paper Masala Dosa , Dahi Vada, Mango Lassi, Poori-palya and coffee. I loved it all except their coffee, which is below average coffee. I would love to visit the place again. read more

Located in a strip mall off Route 9, at first glance Udupi Bhavan isn't that appealing. This is not your average Indian restaurant; if you want fancy plates and table service, you'll have to go somewhere else. At Udupi, you order at the counter, grab a pitcher of water from the fridge, and wait for the deliciousness to come out on styrofoam plates. What Udupi lacks in ambiance, it more than makes up for in the quality of its food. The extensive menu is all vegetarian, but you won't miss the meat. Every dish is perfectly spiced and packed full of flavor, from the samosa chat to the dosas. The entrées surpass those of any local Indian restaurant. I highly recommend the Malai Kofta and the Channa Batura- both are perfection. They have a buffet on Saturdays which is good, too, but I prefer to order off the menu. If you find yourself in Middletown, hop on Route 9 and check this place out but beware- it may ruin all other Indian restaurants for you. read more

Wow so good. Got a dosa and the Chana masala and they were both amazing. Wish I lived closer so I could eat hear more often.

I had heard about this restaurant from my friends who had visited the Lowell area. This was my first time here. This restaurant is in a strip mall on a side street. If you are not looking out for the sign you can drive right past the restaurant. The inside decor is nothing special actually it's not great at all. I went here not the ambiance. I went here for the Dosa and I was not disappointed. I asked for a spicy green chilly dosa that is not on the menu and they were able to deliver. The Dosa's were scrumptious. read more
