Authentic South Indian vegetarian food, super plain but clean ambience, mediocre service. Tried the gobi manchurian, the Andhra masala dosa, the kothu parotta, and the poori-sabzi. On hearing that I had ordered the kothu parotta, the chef came out and asked me if I was from South India and said that he was Tamil from Chennai. It's refreshing to have South Indian food in the US prepared by chefs from South India, and that could explain why the food seemed authentic at Udupi. I enjoyed all the dishes, and while they're nowhere close to the South Indian food one can get in Bangalore (where I'm from) the food is significantly better than one can get in a South Indian restaurant in North Indian cities such as Delhi. The food was perfectly spiced (for me, which means that it may be spicier than usual for most other people) and flavourful. My dining partner tried the mango lassi and enjoyed it. The food was very reasonably priced. The service was neither particularly good nor bad. The woman at the counter was not very friendly but quite efficient. The restaurant appears to thrive on takeout/delivery orders, and was relatively empty. We went on a weekday, so it is possible that it gets more crowded during the weekend. The ambiance is totally charmless and food is served on paper plates. The food did take a lot of time to come out, and I'm assuming that this is because they had one chef at the time who presumably was struggling with delivery orders (UberEats and GrubHub drivers kept coming by to pick up food). I don't live in Connecticut; otherwise, I would come far more often. Overall, I recommend this place if you are in the area, but cannot speak to the quality of the North Indian food served at the restaurant. read more

I came here on a Sunday around noon with a friend who recommended it to me because it is a completely vegetarian restaurant. We were the only customers at the time so it was nice and quiet. I noticed it appeared clean and well organized and I enjoyed the beautiful wall hangings. The menu is found on the menu board above the counter where you order. They serve typical South Indian food. I ordered a dosa and my friend ordered an utthapam. Both meals were delicious! This is located next to an Indian grocery store and within a short drive of the temple. Thick baturas and flavourless Chana/chickpeas. I was warned that the cook/management had changed and quality had gone down. The Indian crepes used to be decent here as well, but again now they are soft and with no spice/salt. The 'masala' in the dosas used to be with onions and spices. As a lifetime Udupi customer, once the ownership started changing, so did the quality of the food. I actually held off on reviewing this place because I hadn't been in over 2 years. This is one of my favorite Indian restaurants in the area. It is more like a cafe... when you enter you walk up to the counter and order your food. I knew what I wanted, but didn't know what it was called, and they helped me. The food was delicious. So much so I ordered two entrees and brought leftovers home. I have a sensitive stomach and the spices didn't affect me at all. The food IS spicy! This coming from and Italian... Note this cafe is vegetarian. You will find no meat here! Very good! This spot was recommended to me by a friend to try when visiting the area. Very authentic and delicious. I saw what others had ordered in the restaurant and everything looked very good and other customers were heard talking about how much they were enjoying their food as well. We ordered Veggie samosas, butter masala dosa and Chana masala. My boyfriend and I split everything and were very satisfied portion wise. The dining environment was no frills but the simplified service was an admirable business model. We witnessed a pretty steady flow of customers from couples to large families coming by to dine in and pick up take out, many of whom appeared to be members of the Indian community. This is a typical South Indian restaurant...we call these kinda restaurants as darshanis (fast food style).... So expect no frills .. The lack of decor may seem unwelcoming but that doesn't put u off esp.when there is so little here in another country reminding you of home... No meat no alcohol.... It's pure vegetarian... And that's never a bad thing for us.....We usually don't eat meat when we visit the temple so for this restaurant it's perfectly stationed. The meals are self service and cutlery is plastic. The food is pretty good. We got dahi puris and onion pakoras for appetizers. The dahi puris were decent; a little too spicy for my taste. The onion pakoras were over cooked. The restaurant did replace the pakoras for us and the next time around the pakoras were cooked just right and we loved them. For dinner, my table ordered channa bhatura, onion uthapam, rava dosa, masala dosa and cheese dosa. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals along with some mango lassi. I would definitely recommend coming here but while placing your order, make sure to indicate your spice levels. My only complaint here is that you have to serve yourself. So be ready to set your table and wait in line to get your food. read more

I've gotten all the dosas I wanted to try thus far and I'm here to rank them in order of my preference. 1) palak masala dosa 2) Mysore masala dosa 3) Andhra spicy masala dosa 4) veg uthappam 5) special rava masala dosa And of course the iddly (steamed patties) never disappoint. One note though, the "stuffing" of potatoes and onions are never consistent. It tastes different everytime I go; always tastes yummy but it's never the same. I had the pleasure of redeeming a Living Social deal to Udupi Bhavan with a friend last night. Like so many amazing restaurants in semi-unfortunate locations, the restaurant is located in a strip mall on Saybrook Road in Middletown. Menu selections are on boards above cash registers and everything is pretty DIY from ordering at the counter to getting pitchers of water. The staff is fabulously friendly (and lets you bring in wine/beer/whatever from the liquor store next door, although they don't advertise being BYOB) and the food. OH, the food. Between the both of us, we enjoyed the veggie samosas (filling, flaky, beautifully seasoned) baigan bharta, a smoky eggplant curry (one of my favorites-- my boyfriend makes a pretty good rendition!), navatran korma (WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN), fluffy, flaky fried flatbread (poori) and my delicious syrupy-cardamom-laced gulab jamun. The entire meal was remarkable- some of the best Indian food I've ever had. And I'm usually the first in line for lamb, chicken, or whatever meat I can throw in a korma, but this vegetarian selection spared no flavor whatsoever. read more

Udupi Bhavan is still awesome, probably my favorite Indian restaurant of all-time, and one of my favorite vegetarian restaurants. i saw one review say it was cash only, and i know that's not true .. i do think there is a minimum on charge cards though. Lately we have been ordering the thali and a dosa and that's enough for dinner for the two of us and gives us a wide selection of curry and veg and soup and rice and bread, etc .. i can honestly say that i have never had anything here that i did not like. the environment is not fancy, and for me that is fine - cafeteria style with food this good.. winning! read more

Great place for vegetarian south Indian food. I usually get my favorite dosa here which is the Rava dosa. The other dosas such as Paper, Masala, and Paneer and cheese are pretty good too. Their coconut chutney and sambar hit the spot. They do have some North Indian items such as chole bature and onion pakora which were not bad. For drinks, try out their mango lassi and masala chai. Their interior seating area is not the best but the food makes up for it. Everything is self serve and the water jugs and plastic silverware are next to the cashier area. I'm a South Indian and know good South Indian food, being able to whip up everything on Udupi Bhavan's menu with ease in my kitchen. That being said, I'll go back. The place has decent food, and leaves my south Indian heart feeling content. The food is not the best I've had, but is as good as you'll find outside of an Indian family's kitchen. I didn't have 1 favorite dish because everything was just right, not great. So I returned the yesterday whilst I was in CT. Got myself a Mysore Sada Dosa, which the young gentleman informed me is way smaller than paper masala dosa I had last night n may not be enough. (Yup, he remembers me!) I told him I got my bases covered, I was planning to get a vegetable korma and chai tea with my meal. The dosa was ready first, and guess what, that thing filled me up. Couldn't even eat another bite after the Mysore Sada dosa. Packed the vegetable korma to go, went for an hour walk to make space in my stomach and ate the korma at 9PM. So full but the food was really good. I'd say i am more impressed with the paper masala dosa than the other two. I will definitely return when I am in the area again. read more

I had heard about this restaurant from my friends who had visited the Lowell area. This was my first time here. This restaurant is in a strip mall on a side street. If you are not looking out for the sign you can drive right past the restaurant. The inside decor is nothing special actually it's not great at all. I went here not the ambiance. Udupi Bhavan may be tiny, but their menu is big on flavor. The Mysore Masala Dosa was large enough to feed a crowd and then some. The best part about a dosa is the combination of crispy and chewy and the chefs at Udupi Bhavan totally get this ratio right. The magic behind it all is still a mystery to me, but I do know a worthy dosa when I taste it. The Mysore Masala Dosa is different from a typical dosa thanks to the hot chutney that is applied to the batter before it is folded over. This gives it a reddish hue and is a tad spicy. I really enjoyed the fragrant potato and onion mixture seasoned with cumin, mustard and curry leaf, contained within and wished there were more of it. The dosas also come with a small cupful of sambar, a spiced lentil stew that warmed the soul, and a refreshing side of coconut chutney. I liked my dosa the way it was and only used the chutney sparingly. One thing to note is that Udupi Bhavan specializes in South Indian cuisine featuring a lot of vegetarian and rice-based dishes so the offerings may be a little different from you see at most Indian places (which are usually North Indian). I was thrilled to find they did have mango lassis in their refrigerator case. These were silky smooth, infused with lots of mango puree and very yogurt-y. It was the perfect way to beat the heat. If my dosa hadn't been so large, I would have gladly picked out a few other items to try. I will just have to do so the next time I return. read more
