Vegetarian thali platter (saag paneer and Chana Masala).

I was remiss about getting pictures when the food came out. First of all, the staff is very attentive and accommodating. The restaurant is clean and bright and wonderfully decorated. The waitstaff brought us out poppadoms with mint sauce, onion chutney, and tamarind sauce. It was fresh and given aplenty, even when we asked for more sauces! I could just eat this the entire time. We started with a non-veggie appetizer that included fried shrimp, delicious grilled chicken, lamb samosa, and chicken pakora (or chicken in a batter). My partner ordered chicken tikka masala with medium heat and it was delicious and rich. I ordered the vegetarian thali platter, which is really a smaller sampling of many different entrees. I don't eat the lentils or yogurt sauce, and they were more than willing to accommodate me and switched this out for me. It comes also with a potato and peas samosa, naan and a dessert. I never finish and basically took most of it home for meals during the week. I love the thali platter because it lets me try a little bit of everything. I can't say enough about how fresh and fully flavored the meal was. Typically we get take out (you can't order thali platter take out though..also there is a thali that includes meat) but I do love coming to the restaurant so I can order the thali and get the full experience (as well as look at the food other people order). Next time I go, I will get better pictures. Trust me...it's good.

Came down to Branford for our anniversary lunch and Darbar was closed (in the process of moving across the road and around the corner) so we looked on Yelp for the closest highly rated Indian restaurant and we hit the jackpot!! We now have another favorite to add to put repertoire! Great decor, friendly staff and FABULOUS food. Every dish had its own special quality ... like the chicken tikka Marsala had a slight smokiness to the chicken and the shrimp poori the perfect balance of creamy and flavorful! Will definitely make the 45 minute drive to come here again and again!

I am giving this five stars because I had a really nice time!!! This was one of the most fun Indian restaurants I have been to. There is a parking lot in the back behind the restaurant. When you walk in, the decorations make a really positive impression. I like all the elephant decorations. I also really liked the chairs, which are purple and have cool bells on them. I also liked my cocktail. It tasted good. It came in an interesting glass and it was filled with fruit (a cherry, an orange slice, and a lime slice). And it had a good amount of gin in it! The food was good too. The menu was really large. I especially liked the breads. I liked that they offered mint parathas; the mint parathas were really refreshing. And the rice portion they gave us was large and fluffy. I wish they asked how spicy I wanted my food, though. I thought my eggplant dish was a little less flavorful than some other Indian restaurants I have been to recently, but maybe it would have been more flavorful if they knew I wanted a little bit of spice!

Shrimp poori appetizer, not to be missed! Thin, crisp shell, creamy delicious sauce

Not too shabby. Much superior to the one in Branford. If you want good Indian food try Darbar.

It was a bit difficult to get into because parking there was weird. I ate inside alone. The host was a bit brash but he was also talking to the uniform guy so I ignored it. The restaurant was empty. Then again it was good Friday. I got served this flatbread with chimichurri sauce, this tamarind one that got me hooked and some chopped pepper. The server arrived within 5 minutes and I was ready to order. I ordered the signature darbar pizza which had lamb, shrimp and chicken with curry sauce and a naan cheese flatbread which was basically another pizza lol. There was a TV playing bollywood shows and music. The food took a little bit but by the time it arrived I was ready to go to town. The pizza was amazing, especially with the tamarind sauce. The curry wasn't too overpowering and the crust was thin. So think new haven pizza with an Indian twist... that isn't trying too hard like Bobbi's. The flatbread was good but i soon regretted it as I had an appointment afterwards! The server was very kind and there in also a koi fish tank that another employee was tending to. 4 stars, because the darbar pizza, flatbread and a soda was a whopping $51 before tip. So i probably won't go out of my way from Danbury to grab this. However if I was close by, this would be a once in awhile treat.

We also ordered garlic naan and cheese naan to share. Both were heavenly! The service was excellent as well. Our water glasses were kept full and the check was brought out in a timely manner. I look forward to my next trip here to try other vegetarian meals!

My only regret and disappointment is that it's been open for seven years and this is the first time I've discovered this wonderful find in the heart of New Haven. I have been looking to come to this place for sometime, but you do need to do reservations for a Saturday night. I didn't want two weeks earlier through Resy. Full disclosure, I get a credit from American Express as part of their partnership with Resy and this is one of the locations that you can obtain that benefit from. We arrived shortly before our reservation time and waited in line as two other groups were turned away as they were all booked up for dinner until much later in the evening. Once inside, I understood as it is not a large dining area. The motive is very Indian forward with images of transportation themes from India, including bicycles on the ceiling above the tables. To start with, the drinks were some of the most flavorful options I have had in some time all with a very traditional Indian twist. I am not big on coconut or tequila, but my wife loved her coconut tequila drink. I thought the Manhattan was a big hit as the date balanced out the flavors perfectly. Even the cold drink, my daughter got reminded me of getting the same back in India. I personally was not a big fan of the mango lassi. My son got but he loved it. It was a bit thick for my taste. With regards to the food options, this reminded me of being in Manak Chok in India. For those that don't know, that is an area in western India known for its street foods and late night dining. The smells and tastes of the food would fit right in there. We started with the Dahi puri. This was a big hit for the entire family. You get six items in the order and this is a great place to start, especially if you like the balance of the street food. The Chaat Dog was also a big hit. We got the option with Lamb covered in chaat. The role was toasted perfectly and the balance of the flavors really hit well. The entire family enjoyed the chicken stuffed naan with the side of the sauce. I will admit it had a bit of a kick, so be careful for those who are not looking for spice forward foods. I have always been a big fan of Chole Bhature (chick peas and puffed whole wheat fried bread). The one here was nearly perfect as served. I was saying to my wife, that it could only be made better with a little bit of raw onion on top. As luck would have it, the waitress overheard my comment and next thing you know, we had a side of chopped onions and lime, the perfect topping for this dish. With regards to the biryani, it was flavorful, though it has never been my favorite thing. It comes with a side of raita as well. Again, that is not something I really enjoy. However, all three of my family enjoyed this immensely, and the serving was so generous, we had a decent amount of leftovers after our meal. We finished the night with some mango kulfi. It was too large scoops as you can see by the picture. This was the perfect sharing dessert for the four of us to conclude our meal. As noted above, our waitress was super attentive and very quick to bring out the dishes and drinks throughout our dinner. I will note that the price point is also great for New Haven restaurants as the complete meal with drinks for all and a dessert came out to $120 before tax and tip. This is definitely a place I would strongly recommend for any in the area. If you're not close by, book a reservation before you come down so it's not to miss out on this amazing experience. It is definitely worth a try if you want a traditional Indian street food experience. They do also have options like more traditional Punjabi style restaurants on the menu, but we focused more so on the street food options during our first visit. I will update further as I experience this place again which I expect to happen in the very near future.

The jalfrezi was overly oily and salty - do not recommend. The server was efficient, though not super friendly. I haven't tried enough Indian restaurants in the area to be able to tell if there are better ones in the area. On hearing that I had ordered the kothu parotta, the chef came out and asked me if I was from South India and said that he was Tamil from Chennai. It's refreshing to have South Indian food in the US prepared by chefs from South India, and that could explain why the food seemed authentic at Udupi. I enjoyed all the dishes, and while they're nowhere close to the South Indian food one can get in Bangalore (where I'm from) the food is significantly better than one can get in a South Indian restaurant in North Indian cities such as Delhi. The food was perfectly spiced (for me, which means that it may be spicier than usual for most other people) and flavourful. My dining partner tried the mango lassi and enjoyed it. The food was very reasonably priced. The service was neither particularly good nor bad. The woman at the counter was not very friendly but quite efficient. The restaurant appears to thrive on takeout/delivery orders, and was relatively empty. We went on a weekday, so it is possible that it gets more crowded during the weekend. The ambiance is totally charmless and food is served on paper plates. The food did take a lot of time to come out, and I'm assuming that this is because they had one chef at the time who presumably was struggling with delivery orders (UberEats and GrubHub drivers kept coming by to pick up food). I don't live in Connecticut; otherwise, I would come far more often. Overall, I recommend this place if you are in the area, but cannot speak to the quality of the North Indian food served at the restaurant.
