My husband & I ate regularly @ this really "authentic" Indian restaurant prior to his passing 5 years ago. In fact we've been huge fans of this type of special cuisine over our 60 yrs together & throughout our years of travel whether in the USA or abroad always sought out Indian food, especially when we spent 5+ weeks throughout our wonderful travels to India. Last week I decided to do some takeout @ Kamana thou I have ventured out for lunch there with a friend several times. Last week's food was likely the tastiest I've ever enjoyed as I am very 'fussy' about portions since at 83 have stomach issues and the young man who took my order over the phone never missed anything I told him--it was prepared exactly as I requested and 3 days later am still enjoying it in every bite I take; the Butter Chicken is superb as the surrounding gravy is sheer tasty perfection as is the Keema Mattar with Lamb; another delight is the Red Onion Chutney eaten over Vegetable Samosa another favorite as is the Alaparata Bread. We had a great meal tonight.. lamb vindaloo is always my favorite and this was perfect. We also ordered the seafood curry which was really tasty and the mixed grill. Also ordered the bread basket. We have leftovers for at least another meal! Everything was just wonderful. read more

I was remiss about getting pictures when the food came out. First of all, the staff is very attentive and accommodating. The restaurant is clean and bright and wonderfully decorated. The waitstaff brought us out poppadoms with mint sauce, onion chutney, and tamarind sauce. It was fresh and given aplenty, even when we asked for more sauces! I could just eat this the entire time. We started with a non-veggie appetizer that included fried shrimp, delicious grilled chicken, lamb samosa, and chicken pakora (or chicken in a batter). My partner ordered chicken tikka masala with medium heat and it was delicious and rich. I ordered the vegetarian thali platter, which is really a smaller sampling of many different entrees. I don't eat the lentils or yogurt sauce, and they were more than willing to accommodate me and switched this out for me. It comes also with a potato and peas samosa, naan and a dessert. I never finish and basically took most of it home for meals during the week. I love the thali platter because it lets me try a little bit of everything. I can't say enough about how fresh and fully flavored the meal was. Typically we get take out (you can't order thali platter take out though..also there is a thali that includes meat) but I do love coming to the restaurant so I can order the thali and get the full experience (as well as look at the food other people order). Next time I go, I will get better pictures. Trust me...it's good. read more

Came down to Branford for our anniversary lunch and Darbar was closed (in the process of moving across the road and around the corner) so we looked on Yelp for the closest highly rated Indian restaurant and we hit the jackpot!! We now have another favorite to add to put repertoire! Great decor, friendly staff and FABULOUS food. Every dish had its own special quality ... like the chicken tikka Marsala had a slight smokiness to the chicken and the shrimp poori the perfect balance of creamy and flavorful! I am giving this five stars because I had a really nice time!!! This was one of the most fun Indian restaurants I have been to. There is a parking lot in the back behind the restaurant. When you walk in, the decorations make a really positive impression. I like all the elephant decorations. I also really liked the chairs, which are purple and have cool bells on them. I also liked my cocktail. It tasted good. It came in an interesting glass and it was filled with fruit (a cherry, an orange slice, and a lime slice). And it had a good amount of gin in it! The food was good too. The menu was really large. I especially liked the breads. I liked that they offered mint parathas; the mint parathas were really refreshing. And the rice portion they gave us was large and fluffy. I wish they asked how spicy I wanted my food, though. I thought my eggplant dish was a little less flavorful than some other Indian restaurants I have been to recently, but maybe it would have been more flavorful if they knew I wanted a little bit of spice! read more

I needed somewhere to stop on the way to Philadelphia from Providence, and the high Yelp ratings, coupled with my general love for Indian food, made this a happy find. I arrived to find that there seemed to be outdoor diners, but perhaps that was a special event; they seated me inside without asking about outside. However, the inside was fine by me, as it was warm and humid out. I'm always a sucker for a thali platter, as I love being able to taste multiple items. The options were a veggie thali or a meat thali. I preferred a thali that had meat but also some vegetables (balanced meal, anyone?). I asked if that was possible, and while my preference would have been to replace one of the meat dishes with a vegetable dish, I think they simply added a vegetable dish (saag paneer) and charged me more. That was fine. Unfortunately, the food was less fine. It lacked flavor. Typically, when one thinks of Indian food, it calls to mind assertive flavors, whether spicy or simply well-spiced. But while the meats (lamb curry, various tandoori items) were generally tender enough, it was as if they'd forgotten to use salt for my meal, and it just didn't taste like much. The saag paneer had lost any sense of texture; it had been pureed into mush. It seemed ironic even to have the raita on the plate, because typically that's used to calm spicy flavors, but there was nothing that even came close to requiring it. I should note that from one corner of the dining room I could hear a seemingly cantankerous older gentleman complaining to his partner about the lack of flavor (or salt or that it was bland); he wasn't wrong. Service was perfectly friendly, and the interior was comfortable enough. Maybe it was just an off night for the kitchen, but sadly, it wouldn't be a place I'd return to. read more

Went there a few weeks ago, the staff was very friendly and answered my questions and helped me decide, I did get my meal to go. I tried the Butter chicken, I have never had it and now I am hooked! The food was 5 Stars! Not sure what little dipping sides they sent with it but the whole meal was a flavor explosion! Guilford has a great Indian restaurant. It's clean, comfortable, and the food has been really good every tine we've eaten there. Their lamb vindaloo features lean, tasty chunks of lab, prepared stew-like, in a spicy sauce- the best lamb vindaloo I've had yet. Their chili chicken is a hit, too. Lots of interesting appetizers to graze on, and a good wine list seal the deal for us. Service is really helpful. And they do take-out. read more

This is an amazing restaurant and you have to try it! From the moment you walk in, the staff are all so nice, welcoming and attentive. It's a small place but with very nice decor. You start off with the popapdoms and they taste divine. They come with some really good sauces but honestly they taste just fine on their own. My husband and I figured we would like leftovers, so we went a little overboard with ordering. For our appetizer, we got the samosas and fried jalapenos. I loved the samosas, the filling was extremely tasty and it was fried just right. The jalapenos were my husband's favorites, deep fried and spicy. For our mains, we got the chicken biriyani, lamb vindaloo, chicken Tikka masala, garlic naan, and chilli naan. Worth noting that the mains come with white rice, so yes, we had a lot of food. Like I said, we went overboard :-) Everything tasted great! All the dishes were so mouthwatering!! You can adjust the vindaloo's spice level and I chose 8 out of 10 but I think they went easy on me :-) We didn't really have room for dessert but ordered the pistachio kulfi anyway (it's sort of like ice cream). This was the definitely the perfect ending to the meal. I've never had kulfi before and this was heavenly. Even my husband who doesn't like dessert (so he claims) devoured half of this and declared it the best dessert he'd had in years. Excellent food here. We will be back. read more
