The Chicken 65 is absolutely amazing! I didn't expect the chicken to be so crispy, and that's exactly how I love it! I ordered a side of rice and it was the perfect combination to go with my chicken. Food is very good and the staff is very nice but service is often quite slow and inconsistent. We go often because we enjoy the food but we are often times having to ask for water refills even though they leave bottles at the tables. Sometimes we have to sit and wait for awhile to order and you never know if the food is going to come out quickly or if you have to wait and wait. Restaurant decor is basic and it's pretty casual. We see lots of family dinners. We like Jaya's a lot but just wish they were a little more buttoned up with their service. kormas, tikka masala's, vindaloo, naan, parota are all good. Mild is mild. What a wonderful little hole in the wall. Packed away in a little strip mall, near a pizza place and a Chinese takeout is Jaya's Kitchen, a South Indian restaurant. While they do have pan-Indian staples like various tikka masalas, you'll find variants -- such as parota instead of naan -- that you may not find at your local Indian place. Be aware of that. That being said, don't let that stop you. You'll find your usual favorites and more. I got a biryani dish (Hyderabadi egg biryani), which was nice and spicy, full of spice and flavor, and three hard-boiled eggs that were bright orange. It was enough for two, or for one hungry man. My girlfriend got the paneer tikka masala, which she ordered medium but found to be quite mild, though still delicious. Parota is bread, though flat, thicker, and in the case of the gobi variety, made with cauliflower. Jaya's has finally brought outstanding Indian fare to Wallingford. There has been a drought in the area since Zaika departed North Haven a few years ago. Service is immediate and the bottles of water are already on the tables waiting for you... and you'll need it! Like true South Indian Cuisine all the spice is there, but does NOT overwhelm the home cooked flavors of the food. Went her for the first time last night and am already making plans to return. First thing to know: this is a BYOB establishment! Second thing to know: you save 10% on the bill if you pay with cash. Our waiter was a friendly gentleman named Suriya. We literally wanted to try everything; without his advice, we would have over-ordered even more extremely than we did! For all of us, our favorite dish was the Chicken 65. It was cooked perfectly, the seasoning was complex and delicious, and the cilantro dipping sauce was the perfect complement. My husband had the chicken tiki masala, which he described as perfect. I enjoyed the chana masala, which was spicy to the perfect degree. I'm happy to have this restaurant here in Wallingford. The food is great - we tried the paneer dosa, chicken tikka masala and the chicken vindaloo. I have celiac and all 3 dishes are gf. The medium spice level was perfect and we had enough left over to take home. I will definitely try other dishes as there are a lot of gf options on the menu. My only criticism is the atmosphere. The bar is not used but it actually looks like a storage area with boxes everywhere. The lighting is not welcoming and the hostess desk is located at the back of the restaurant causing a constant interruption throughout the restaurant when someone picks up their takeout order. The decor is sparse leaving so much opportunity for a more vibrant look. Because the food is so good this restaurant could do even better if they worked on the interior vibes. Biggest negative is that thet don't have naan, instead has parottas as bread options (again, because it's South Indian). The amount of biryani for the price is not good, last I went a portion of goat briyani was about $18 and was barely enough for one person. Salmon tikka masala with veechu parotta is my go-to! The Indian food scene in Wallingford has been dismal since the closure of Zaika. When I heard that Jaya was opening, I got excited for my next visit home and we ordered takeout on my first night in town. Here's our order and our review for each item: 1. Samosas: a bit more spice than expected but not overwhelming. Extra delicious with a bit of the tikka masala sauce. 2. Gobi 65: not our favorite but probably excellent when eaten at the restaurant. They wilted a bit during the drive home. 3. Paneer Tikka Masala: I would eat this every single day. Perfection. 4. Chicken Tikka Masala: I would also eat this every single day. 5. Parota (plain): I had never had this before and was intrigued. It is a flaky and layered bread - almost like if a croissant was flat. Loved it. 6. Peshawari Parota: Loved this too! I was worried that it wouldn't hold up to my love of naan but they might be tied now. The location is clean and large with lots of tables and seats. The woman working was friendly and chatted with me for a few minutes. They currently offer a small discount on your meal if you pay in cash, which is a great incentive as it saves them on credit card fees as well. The menu is not excessively large, which is great. They have photos of every item so you know what to expect along with a description of the taste and ingredients. I am hoping they are here for a long time so I can try more of their offerings. read more

3rd time was yesterday and we just keep ordering different dishes from the menu. We off course ordered the medu vada, my 3 year old demolished the Topi (hat) dosa, the bigger kids had a large masala dosa and a Poori Baji. The Mrs and I shared the Ambur biryani which was absolutely delicious. Instead of chicken 65 we also ordered chicken wings65. They were piping hot when they came out and we're so good the kids insisted we order another plate. They were pretty busy and other than the duplicate wings order all the food came out together pretty quickly. It's great to have authentic south Indian food in Wallingford. Jaya's hasn't been open long and it's clearly drawing a lot of people. I ordered around 6:20pm on a Saturday night and they had several customers inside, and a few more take out orders. No delivery at this time. SERVICE: Calling in our order was easy and straightforward. The website is also well-designed and simple to navigate. My husband and I were told our takeaway order would be ready in 25 minutes, but it ended up being a full hour. At first we were a little hangry about it but tried to be understandable since it's a new place. We thought the food would need to be really good to make up for it. And sure enough it was! FOOD: The malabar chicken curry was really comforting with the perfect blend of spices. Hubs got the goat tikka masala and it, too, was really good - I just had to taste it. Since our order was waiting a while the paneer and cauliflower apps were cold, but still really flavorful even reheated. This was my first time trying Indian food, ever. Many of the locals have posted on Facebook to try this place, which lured me in pretty quickly. The staff was attentive and answered questions thoroughly. The waiters seemed a little disorganized and noncommunicative with each other when an item we had ordered was unavailable but we were still charged (they took care of it). I could not believe how tasty the food was! My table ordered the Devil's Chicken at medium spice. This dish was so flavorful and yummy! I could only have a couple bites. We also ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala, chicken fried rice, parota, and Hyderabadi Chicken Briyani. All of the dishes tasted so good and the parota paired well with each dish. So we have been here a few times but the service is so slow and sometimes they have kids running around. Tonight we got takeout. When we arrived the food wasn't ready. Waited a few minutes, nothing crazy except when we got home the food isn't even what we ordered. It takes so strong and badly of clove. The chicken is all dark meat. I think they took another dish and stirred in something to make it resemble Chicken Tikka Masala. This is a new Indian (South Indian) restaurant that opened in Wallingford. I stumbled upon the place while I was there trying to get something from the vegan place next door. There are not many Indian restaurants in the area and whatever few we have are North Indian restaurants which serve Americanized Indian food, so seeing a South Indian restaurant, we instantly decided to try it out. They have an extensive menu, serving almost everything other South Indian restaurants have, may be a little more (I can't remember any other place near by that serves Kerala/Tamil dish porotta, if at all it exists that would be the reheated frozen porotta imported from India, but not this place). Everything we tried are delicious, from appetizers and entrees to biriyani and breads. Their dosas are my favorite. Note:As it's a newly opened restaurant, at times the service can be a little bit slow. And another thing we felt is that the spice level mild is too mild here (almost tastes sweet). We love coming to Jaya, which is right off Colony Road in Wallingford. The South Indian cuisine is brought to you fresh out of the kitchen. The restaurant affords a level of privacy with booths against the wall in the delicately lit casual dining room atmosphere.There's also a bar that is supposed to open soon, but you can sit there and eat if you like. Sometimes, Jaya is very crowded and other times it's laid back. The same people serve us each time, and by now, they know exactly what we like to order. There's a large assortment of breads, and I highly recommend the Ceylon paratha. I ordered mine with chicken inside, and it comes with dipping sauce. The Paneer 65 was juicy with a mild zing, not too spicy, . I ordered the chicken korma because it's the least spicy and besides, I like the creamy texture. The food at Jaya is not overly spicy, but if you are sensitive to spice, you might want to moderate your meal choices. I usually order the Chikoo shake, but this time they were out of it. We ordered the almond milk and once again, they prepared it fresh in the kitchen. It was creamy and mildly sweet with a lovely nutty texture. The prices here are reasonable compared to other Indian restaurants, and the South Indian cuisine is so well prepared; I recommend visiting. Food is outstanding. 5 Service fair. 3 Ambiance. 1 Outstanding food and from what I understand, this is Southern style Indian cuisine which is the less common variety in the US. If you don't know the difference, like most of us, you will not be disappointed. They don't serve alcoholic beverages but you can bring your own. The place had an empty feel with the 20 ft long bar with no liquor stocked and no beer on tap with a dozen taps available and some crappy Bollywood movie on tv, seriously? The worst is, the place just isn't friendly. Now I don't want to give you the impression that is unfriendly, but I felt the server was giving us the bums rush. We felt uncomfortable. I left feeling we were a burden in the staff. You can feel the attitude just walking in the door. I recommend treating this place like a take-out,take it home. REMINDER! ~ The food is outstanding and the prices are lower than most other Indian restaurants. If you're dining in, don't expect anything more than highway diner service. Really excellent Indian food in an unassuming location. There are some really interesting South Indian dishes that I've never seen anywhere else before. Their dosa are especially wonderful. We have to get one every time, and every time, I always wish I had just ordered my own. They're so perfectly crispy and the potato masala is perfectly seasoned and spiced. We're also big fans of the Chettinadu goat curry and the Malabar chicken curry, both of which are must-orders for us every time. The only reason why I can't give them a full 5 stars these days is because the portion sizes have really been shrinking over the past year. I get that food prices are expensive these days, but I would be happy paying more in order to get a curry with more than 5-6 pieces of meat so I could more readily share this with my family. That said, this is still one of my favorite Indian restaurants and I'll keep coming back, but I wish they would change this. read more
