Just got some takeout curry from here, and it was fantastic! I think I made a mistake not ordering curry last time! We had the baigan bartha and malai kofta (both $12) and they were full of flavor and had just the right amount of heat. The malai kofta had tasty chickpea dumplings in it and the baigan bartha had generous chunks of fresh eggplant (I liked that it hadn't been cooked down all the way). This may be my favorite baigan bartha ever. The raita (cucumber yogurt) was a nice accompaniment too. We also tried the deep fried poori bread ($2.50) but I would suggest going with a naan if you're doing takeout, since the bread was getting cold (and you want fried stuff fresh and hot). Have been here 3 times and chole Batura is consistently good. I would also recommend most of the dosas, if u r cravin a very spicy dosa go for Andhra spicy masala dosa. The sambar vada is also good. Some items I would NOT recommend : No Rava dosa, lacks oil/butter which makes it less crisp, dry and tasteless. None of the chat items were good, too much aloo, really too much potato. Pani puri was bloated to aloo, no sign of channa. Mango lassi had yogurt a few days old making it sour. Final note, it's worth a few tries to find what's good at this place. Some of the best food I've ever had. Indian or otherwise. Many of the menu items were unfamiliar to me which provided some adventure. Not the standard tikka masala you'll find at every other Indian restaurant. I was glad that my dining partner is a chef and helped pick out some hidden gems. I can very highly recommend the dosa and lentil donuts. The tamarind rice was also amazing. I'm already looking forward to going back and trying the curries. Decided to go someplace other than the usual haunts, and I daresay I really liked this place. Udupi Bhavan serves only vegetarian Indian food, and it was absolutely wonderful. The Good: Amazing food. We only ordered a few things, but everything was outstanding. We even watched what other people were ordering, and damn if it all didn't look and smell amazing. Perhaps the only criticism of the food could be that it was TOO rich. Yeah, not much of a complaint at all. Prices were good. Service was polite and decent for what it was. Parking was ample -- they are in a small shopping plaza with many eateries and other interesting places with a large parking lot to service it. Their menu had an excellent selection of many items you don't see at every Indian restaurant. I really appreciate that it seems to a social hub for the local desi community. The Bad: Nothing bad to say here unless you really want to dine on a Monday, then it sucks for you because they are closed that day. The Ugly: I'm not a huge fan of counter service, though I don't usually hold it against a place. However, it is worth noting that you place an order up front and pick it up from the counter when its ready. The decor is functional -- one could even say that its simplicity lacks the overtly ethnic overtures of so many other Indian restaurants who hang decidedly "Indian" trappings on every wall and table surface. This is just a room with some tables, a counter, and a kitchen in the back. Nothing fancy, but it may not be the most appealing locale for some folks. Personally, I was fine with it. As a local, I can testify that I have never caught Udupi Bhavan off their game. I also spent time traveling in India, and very rarely (outside of people's homes) came across restaurant or street food that compared with this tiny, strip-mall restaurant in Middletown, CT. It's really, really good. As everyone says, it's hard to oversell how "plain" this place is - sort of a combination of working-class frugality and Indian asceticism. Don't waste stuff - it bugs them. My favorites: masala dosa (spiced pototo mix inside a rice flour crepe), mattar paneer (soft cheese and peas), the best raita (yogurt sauce) ever. I love the vegetable pulav, a cooked rice dish with veggies where the onions are so sweet they taste like candy. Best time to visit: Sunday evening! Gluten Free tip: you're pretty much at risk here - but technically the paneer dishes and vegetable pulav have no gluten. Even though the dosa is a rice flour crepe, it has about a 1/10 ratio of wheat to rice flour, so that's out. I like to order the potato masala on the side. read more

After buying a recent deal on one of the group buy sites, the wife and I came with our $30 voucher. We realized quickly that it was going to be difficult to actually spend a full $30 here for 2 people! Everything is so cheap, I don't think i saw anything over $9.50! We started off with samosas and samosa chaat. The samosa chaat was amazing, I loved all the chutneys, chickpeas and sauce smothered over pieces of samosa. We ended up taking our regular samosas and throwing them into the leftover chaat. For our main course, we had Onion & Hot Chilli Uttapam and Palak Masala Dosa. Both were awesome. The dosa filling was absolutely perfect. I also liked that the dosa itself had spinach in it. That was a first for me and was really tasty. The sambar was also good, but we both decided we would have liked more veggies in it. My wife got Mango Lassi and said it was good, but it was pre made and stored in a fridge. We would have preferred it to be fresh. Overall the meal was excellent and we'll definitely come back when in the area. The only thing we didnt like was the lack of organization and order in the restaurant. We went on a Saturday night and it was packed. Getting a table was a bit of a challenge - its basically a free for all. You also need to learn to ignore the guy constantly screaming order numbers out in the place (you order at a counter and pickup your food at the counter when they call your number). The plus side of this is you arent really expected to tip. Next time we are going to come on a week night. read more

Don't miss out on Gobhi Manchurian though not a real South Indian dish but because of its popularity in south India has become quite native. Regular southern delicacies like Differenr variants of Dosas, utthapam will leave a taste that will make you come over and over again. Went here with a co-worker for lunch. The cream of wheat dosa was amazing, light and cripsy and went well our aloo gobi. The aloo gobi was in a good sauce but the cauliflower needed to be cut smaller and more potatoes. The pakoras were nicely fired and the peppers were a pleasant surprise, but overall the plate was a tad salty. The rice was ok, I am used to more spices like cumin seeds and cardamon. YUMMY. Love this place. It is VEGETARIAN - but if i'd easily be vegetarian if I lived next to this place. The dosas are phenomenal, our favorites is the Chana masala, samosas, samosa chaat, but I've never had anything that I didn't like there. We usually get take out. You can eat in but be warned everything is served on disposable plates and when we asked for to go containers they gave us foil to cover the plates. The dining area is set up cafeteria style and they call you up to pick up your food as its ready. Price wise I'd say it's slightly cheaper than most Indian restaurants. Gave it 5 stars since it really is the best Indian food we've had in the state and we usually get it as take out from here. read more

Visited for the first time today. Not your typical Indian restaurant. The menu is varied and authentic, the food freshly prepared and five star delicious. That said, the location, decor and atmosphere detract somewhat from the excellent quality of the food. Located in an out of the way strip mall (albeit not too far from a Route 9 on/off though), the small space is cold, colorless and spartan, more like what you might expect in a Chinese take out place. It's counter service and paper plates, but the staff are friendly and very helpful with menu suggestions. All in all, it's worth a visit for lunch or takeout every now and then. read more

During my college days, Udupi Bhavan was my #1 choice for vegetarian eats when I decided to eat out. A self-serve place with delicious, perfectly spiced meatless indian food. One of the few places where ambiance does not matter because the food is first-rate. Thank goodness for the pitchers of water in the public fridge. I ordered a "Number 5" spicy and I cried my tush off (and my sinuses were cleared like WHOA). Veggie samosas were to die for and I would be content with eating the Poori flatbread for the rest of my life. I scarfed down so much bread during this meal. It really is that scrumptious. read more

I really wanted to like this place after seeing the Yelp ratings. It's the third Indian establishment I've tried since moving to Middletown, the other two being Tandoor and Haveli. For all I know, dinner here is amazing, but the lunch buffet leaves a lot to be desired. Most of the available dishes shared an unpleasantly bitter taste, and what wasn't bitter was bland - not what I expect from a cuisine known for spices. (Maybe it's deliberate, and if you don't like the particular taste here, then the place isn't for you. I dunno.) No pakoras or samosas despite their presence on the dinner menu; there were dosas, but only from a fellow roaming around with a stack of them. Dessert consisted of a single brown transculent loaf labeled "Sweet Dish" that was presented about as unappetizingly as possible. The mango lassi I ordered wasn't made fresh, but rather came from a fridge where it had been sitting for who knows how long. As far as I'm concerned, if the food is awesome, then it alone can justify minimal effort in everything else, but the food was decidedly not awesome. And the $15 credit card minimum is not something one wants to deal with when going solely for a $9 buffet. If I was with a group and they all wanted to go here for dinner, I might give a second chance, but nothing I saw on this visit gave me any inclination to return. For a buffet, at least, both Tandoor and Haveli stomp all over Udupi Bhavan. read more

I defy to find a single item on the menu that isn't great!! Amazing, authentic, and very warm staff. I am almost always the only non-Indian there but the secret is out and I see a more diversified clientele including Wesleyan students visiting regularly. The Dahi Vada are a strange lentil doughnut deep-fried and then immersed in a cool, savory yogurt...Very different but I get them almost every time I go. Try the potato bonda. Awesome authentic food! Generous servings, especially the breads! Wasn't sure what to order and the guys behind the counter were super friendly and helpful in giving suggestions. The food is very good, but they did not ask about how spicy we wanted out dishes to be and mine was too spicy for me to eat, so I had to switch with my son who had a dish that was not spicy at all. When I checked out the bill was $35, but there was no actual written bill with prices for each item, and when I looked up the menu online when I got home, the bill should have been $25.
