I've been a longtime fan of the Uchi restaurants and used to go to Uchi before Uchiko opened. I've been here a few times now, and every visit somehow manages to impress me all over again. The food is so amazing and the service also stands out every time I come here because the staff is so attentive. The photos I'm sharing are from their Mother's Day omakase. I brought my family here to celebrate my mom, and I was really impressed with how accommodating they were. A few of the dishes included shellfish, which my brother is allergic to, but the staff handled it so smoothly and prepared amazing substitutes for both him and my dad while still making the experience feel complete for everyone. My mom and I were still able to enjoy the original dishes, and it never felt like anyone was missing out. This is one of those places I'll always recommend to friends. It's definitely on the pricier side, but for the quality of the food, service, and overall experience, I genuinely think it's worth it. read more

My wife took me here for a pre-Father's Day dinner (today, the Saturday before), and unfortunately, it did not live up to the expectations or the premium price tag. Starting with the positives, our server did a fantastic job (9/10). The staff is attentive, professional, and well-trained. The ambiance and vibe of the restaurant are also quite nice, earning a solid 7/10. However, for a restaurant where the food is supposed to be the main rage, it completely missed the mark on value. The dishes are undeniably overpriced for what you get. While the presentation is high-end, the actual taste and quality of the sushi and nigiri were just "ok"--honestly, no better than what I've had at several other standard Japanese restaurants in the area. When you are paying top-dollar prices, the food needs to deliver an exceptional flavor experience, not just look pretty on a plate. I didn't feel the value matched what was paid tonight. Fantastic deal for the happy hour omakase. Love love Uchi so much so was excited to try this place. Maybe 2-3 dishes overlap but for the most part it's a diff menu. I would say they have more hot food, a little more american- influence maybe? (Maybe jsut bc they have French fries). Overall- similar to Uchi- I love love their cold dishes/ sushi. The portions of the 9 courses were very generous but it wasn't very fish/sushi forward and the flavors were very basic. A lot of the dishes were topped with an unnecessary amount of salt. The cocktail called a Subarashi was so good that I had to have two. The server was attentive and quick (so that I did not miss my flight). I was early enough to order most of the food from the happy hour menu. This is great because I had small bites that were a delicious start, as well as a couple main menu items. The last few times I've been out to Legacy West, it has been solely for Uchiko. Super cool and modern atmosphere, just know you're in for a good time. A friend and I made it in for happy hour where we ordered the chicken karaage, truffle fries, blue crab hand roll and lychee martinis. The previous times I've been, I sat at the bar and had some of the most knowledgeable and attentive bartenders ever. We sat at a table this time and our server was not as attentive but I do like that each time a dish is delivered the server describes it to you. The charred lemon broccolini is divine but this go round I got a hand full of broccoli stalks for like $9. Still delicious but it was just a taste. The karaage is delicious. Crispy chicken thigh with a sweet glaze hit the spot. The truffle fries are probably some of the best I've ever had. They're a thicker fry so the truffle oil really permeates the tender fries. The blue crab tobiko is delicious as well. This time it had a charred shishito pepper inside which added a nice smoky spice. You cannot go wrong with the lychee martini. Free sample sesame wonton crisp was great, I always look forward to them. The dip is super unique, never had that flavor profile before. Tempura was my fav, would get again. Fraiche that came with it was weird - not sure about that. Brussel sprouts were a bit burnt but the sauce was somewhat good? Karaage was good, the sauce they used had a pickle-y flavor Pomegranate jalapeno was okay but the yuzu honey (when stirred) was good, would get again Deconstructed mochi was good. Independent mochi bread at bottom was the best part, would get again Something about the savory options here don't strike me too well (I blame my bias with food in Japan) but the desserts and drinks are solid. 4 - 4.5 stars! Most of the food we tried was delicious but it definitely costs a pretty penny for relatively small plates / portions. My fiance and I visited on a Friday night with no reservation, and they were able to seat us at the sushi bar which we ended up loving. We started with just ordering an assortment of nigiri, a roll, and a main protein dish, after which we decided we needed more food so we got some more nigiri plus another roll. Everything here generally comes in small portions so it's great to share amongst people, but the prices add up for sure! All of the nigiri we had was fantastic, and the fish tasted super fresh. The two rolls we tried were the soft shell crab roll and the spicy crunchy tuna roll. Between these two, the soft shell crab roll was a definite highlight -- the crab was delicious and the fish sauce flavor really elevated the whole dish and made it super unique! The spicy crunchy tuna roll was pretty one-dimensional in terms of flavor and nothing to write home about. In addition to all of the seafood, we also got the short rib which was perfectly cooked and so tender & juicy. After our meal, we wrapped up with the milk + cereal dessert because I'm a sucker for anything milk and cereal related. This was so tasty and unlike anything I've had in the past, plus I really loved the fried milk! I did also want to add that they provided a complimentary starter (sesame chips) and pineapple yuzu soda at the beginning of our meal, and we also got complimentary wagyu nigiri as we were finishing our food. We ordered the omakase for two which is $150 per person (for a couple). I had high expectations for Uchiko since it is part of a very popular restaurant group. Compared to the other omakases I've experienced around the Dallas area and their price points, I thought Uchi was okay and there are other better omakases in the area. Their omakase included non-seafood options but I thought omakase should be heavy on the nigiri dishes. They also had a somakase option where you can change the non-seafood/seafood ratio in their omakase which is a great option if you don't eat a lot of fish! My first experience for happy hour at the bar was spectacular (from service to food and cocktails, 5/5)! But unfortunately my second visit here was not good at all from the hostess stand to the service provided at our table (2.5/5). The vibe/decor, food, and drinks were still solid, but as I value good service, I was beyond disappointed. To start, the hostess attitude was very off-putting . The bar was full, so I asked for a table, the hostess seemed annoyed that I did not have a reservation. After finding a table she rudely said we needed to be finished by 7 and asked where the other dining party was, I felt this was poor etiquette. Our server was not much better. I completely understand restaurants needing clarification regarding allergies, however the way the conversation was handled regarding my dairy' restriction felt off-putting. What really upset us, is sitting in between 2 tables that both had the same server as us, and watching them receive amazing and attentive service while received service that was completely below expectation. Overall our food and cocktails were great, the only complaint was my friend's very skimpy portion of broccolini compared to our previous visit. I do still enjoy Uchiko a lot, and I will not allow the poor service to keep me from returning, however the inconsistency is something I could not just ignore . Decided to do a solo happy hour to treat myself. I love Uchiko and always will! I told them of my dietary restrictions which was all fully cooked items secondary to my pregnancy. I was so excited that Uchiko opened up closer to my house so I don't have to make the trek all the way to uptown anymore. I came with a friend on a Friday for dinner, and decided on the tasting menu, which is $120 for 2 people and comes with six courses. It also happened to be happy hour, so we were able to enjoy some of their cocktails at a discounted price, all of which were very delicious! The first course of the tasting menu was the sunomono, which was very refreshing and had a great flavor from the scallion vinaigrette. The second course was the hama chili, which was perfection! I could've probably had several more of these. Next, they brought out two tuna handrolls and two nigiri pieces, which I don't recall the names of now, but it was very tasty! The fifth course was the steak frites, cooked to perfection, and surprisingly a good amount of food. Finally, the last course (and the best course) was the fried milk! So good and always the best way to end a meal at an Uchi restaurant. Came for date night and tried out their signature tasting menu! $120 for 2 people is phenomenal, what a deal! There was a good mix of land & sea and we were told the menu changes frequently. We had some nigiri, sashimi, steak, chicken skewers, handrolls, and dessert! Really, this is the best deal ever. Everything was fresh and delicious and filling. My husband who normally doesn't like tastings due to the normally smaller portions, was full at the end. We did order an extra side of karaage and 2 pieces of the wagyu nigiri which were both also so delicious. We went early since we don't like to eat too late so it was still happy hour when we arrived! The food, service, and ambiance stole the show! I came here for a girls night with my friend and ordered the tasting menu for 2 along with some extra happy hour bites. The $120 tasting menu started us off with the hama chilli. The server recommended us to take a bite with orange with every bite of fish and it truly made such a difference. Next was 2 tuna handrolls, and 2 sets of nigiri (unfortunately, I forgot what they were). The tasting also came with a cucumber salad and the steak frites. Additionally, we ordered the scallop nigiri, tuna and crispy rice, salmon belly, and of course the hot rock. We updated the dessert that comes with the tasting to the milk and cereal, which is a MUST. I can totally understand why this dessert is their signature. All the food was delicious and fresh. The service matched the upscale vibe. From the hostess, to our server, to the ones who ran the plates to our table, all the staff always had a smile on their face and offered great tasting advice. We went during happy hour (4-6PM daily) and ordered a number of items including the dumplings, takoyaki, pork ribs, beef skewers, take nabe (added short ribs), karaage, and nigiris. Stopped in and to my surprise they were doing happy hour all day. Was able to enjoy a few items across the menu. Really enjoyed the bincho, taken from a recommendation by the bar tender. The beef on the skewers weren't anything special, if anything they were a bit chewy...however the Asian pear and the dipping sauce were interesting enough to make up for it. Both handrolls were delicious especially with the dipping sauce. Overall the portion sizes are very small. The servers would take my finished plates immediately. I didn't appreciate that especially because I hadn't fully finished one of my dishes before it was whisked away. For what you get, the happy hour menu feels steep. I am a long-time fan of Uchi. My wife and I first discovered Uchi when it only had the Austin location. That was amazing. My wife is Japanese, and I lived in Japan for a few years. He took highly sophisticated Japanese cuisine and created some very sophisticated twists. We sometimes drove from Dallas to Austin just to eat there. Then Uchi started to expand, and the quality went down. It is still good, but mostly a B from a taste level. The problem is people who follow a recipe but don't know what they are doing. The food went from amazing to okay -- an American/Japanese fusion thing, but heavier on the American side. You could see it in the dessert. Not a single Japanese-inspired dessert. One of our dishes was undercooked, and I had to send it back to the kitchen. But the interior decoration in Plano is very nice. The service is friendly. We came during happy hour and stayed long. The Austin location back then was for foodies. The Plano location (we came during the week) seems to be focused on business dinners. In a nutshell: if you are looking for a business dinner location, it is not bad. If you are a foodie and know Japanese cuisine, it is okay, but not great. We got all the recommended dishes, and everything was good. The place is beautiful and service was good. But the one standout (that no one seems to mention) was the short rib. It's a small serving, but it's so rich that we wouldn't have been able to eat more of it anyway. We were disappointed that the foie gras nigiri is gone, but the short rib filled the void. I am glad we made an advanced online reservation for two for the 5pm happy hour because the happy hour tasting tor two for $120 is popular and they had people waiting to be seated or sitting at the bar instead. Valet parking entrance behind the restaurant was convenient to walk around the corner to the main front door. Our booth was cozy and servers were well-versed in the food. He patiently answered our questions and we ended up ordering what we liked instead of the tasting that night. We had to use the flashlight on our phones to read the menus because the restaurant keeps the lights dim for the ambiance. I loved their hibiscus tea and highly recommend it. The piping hot tea was delicious. They paced each dish well and we were not rushed. The dessert was worth the wait. The extra side dish of roasted Brussel sprouts that he gave us was something we would definitely order again. We had the Happy Hour menu items of Hama Chili, Bincho Nigiri 2pc , Salmon Temaki, and Gyutoro Gunkan 2 pc. All were delicious and fresh. So I have been coming here for 2 items. I love their tofu sushi roll and their Japanese sweet potato dish. The service has the bar is generally good. The kitchen is hit or miss. Sometimes things come out in a decent time and other times it's very slow as if they forgot your order.
