You can tell they put a lot of thought into how each bite flows into the next. The fatty cuts were rich and buttery, while the lighter dishes had really bright clean flavors that kept everything from feeling too heavy. I loved how unique some of the combinations were without being overwhelming. Nothing felt gimmicky, just really well executed. The pacing was perfect and gave you time to actually enjoy each course without feeling rushed. For a happy hour offering, the value is honestly amazing. It feels like you are getting a high end omakase experience at a much more approachable price point. The ambiance is modern and lively but still intimate enough for a date or small group. My wife and I visited for an early evening dinner. Disclosure, we've also eaten at the Uchi in Miami so we came aware in advance of what to expect. Beautifully prepared dishes, my wife absolutely loves this place. She'd give it six stars in her review. So why only four stars from me? Simply stated, this restaurant is an echo chamber. I like the modern design but I was virtually unable to hear our table conversation while competing with what almost sounded like a football match occurring in our midst. (FYI, the Miami location has a very different, much more intimate aesthetic.) We splurged on the Chef's Tasting menu. Every dish, OK, almost every dish was delicious. I'm not going to name them, you can view the photos. (Did the chef truly catch the rockfish himself? Our server said he did!). The one exception was our very last plate. Seemingly ironic for a Sushi restaurant, our Wagyu Beef course was well overdone. The server apologized and offered to replace it but we were quite honestly full by then so declined. Having absolutely adored Uchi after my first time dining at their Houston location, I had incredibly high expectations for this Los Angeles outpost in West Hollywood--and it completely lives up to the hype. I highly recommend sitting at the sushi bar if you are ordering sushi so you can talk to the sushi chef about what you like/dislike or any other dietary restrictions. Uchi!! I'm slightly disappointed because I really wanted to love this sushi spot. Let's start from the beginning, we made a same day reservation for a Saturday evening and were seated within minutes, which was great. The interior décor is intentional, modern, and unique. The outdoor area looked cute with overhead heaters, though I'm not sure how effective they actually are. We sat inside near the door, which ended up being extremely cold, and Jeremy was our server, very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Unfortunately, the pacing of the meal really missed the mark. Food came out extremely slow, about 15 minutes between each roll. It may have been an off night, as the table next to us also experienced a delay with their drinks and ended up being offered upgraded liquor. We ordered the Greek black bream nigiri, hamachi yellowtail, cucumber salad, scallop, bluefin tuna, and cod. The cucumber salad was the first dish we tried and it was incredible, so flavorful that we were instantly on cloud nine and felt optimistic about the rest of the meal. The sushi itself was fresh, but the long wait times took away from the experience. About 35 minutes after ordering, we were told the cod was no longer available, which should have been communicated much sooner. While we were deciding on a replacement, another server, who hadn't been by all night came over and accidentally poured regular water into my girlfriend's sparkling water and nearly knocked over my wine glass. It felt awkward and careless, especially since the sparkling water was on her side of the table, while I was the one drinking still water. Jeremy did try to make it right by sending over an extra roll, which we appreciated, but unfortunately it ended up being our least favorite of the night. So we didn't eat it, and felt bad for wasting food. The only reason I didn't give three stars is because there was an attempt to save the experience, even though it ultimately fell short. We ended up heading to another sushi spot afterward to satisfy our cravings. Small details matter. Untimely pacing, missteps, and lack of communication can really impact an otherwise promising dining experience. Definitely room for improvement. read more

I've been a fan of Uchi since my first visit in austin nearly two decades ago. The LA location delivers all that the brand represents. I love the ambiance. It is the perfect spot for date night or for any occasion. I was blown away by the service. Empty dishes removed immediately, water always available, multiple servers and runners. Absolute perfection. Sushi chef Ray was amazing. Everyone was receptive to my likes and items that weren't my favorite and adjusted accordingly. I ordered omakase tasting menu and while I prefer an all sushi omakase experience, I tried the variety option that offered a wealth of hot and cold options. It included an oyster, sushi, tempura, sashimi, pork belly, grilled salmon, and hand rolls. More than enough food and provides a good foundation of the menu. My favorites were the sushi options because they were unique with a hint of citrus. Tempura has never been more delectable. There was only bar seating during their happy hour time since all the other tables were already reserved or taken up by other guests. I tried the happy hour omakase 9 course meal for 2 people. I would have to say everything was very delicious and well put together. Towards the beginning of the service, food came out extremely slow (especially the yuzu grape appetizer) which took about 30 minutes to come out and then subsequently the rest of the dishes, and towards the end, everything else started to come out faster and faster. I understand that higher end restaurants tend to take some time so you can savor and enjoy the dishes but I felt like it was very unenjoyable having to wait so so long for a tiny dish to come out. Another thing I noticed was that other people had done reviews for the 9-course for 2 and every dish that they got gave 2 portions respectively. I decided try Uchi's happy hour menu. If you sit at the cocktail bar, happy hour is all night from Sun-Wed. Other seats in the restaurant will only have happy hour 5-6pm daily if I remember correctly. I went on a Tuesday night. My quick happy hour 9 course omakase took about 2 hours...the other couple got there earlier than us finished around the same time as us so I think theirs took 2:30 hours. I'm not sure why it took so long and there were a lot of long breaks in between our courses. Keep in mind these "courses" are tiny. I think they forgot one of our courses but by the end we were frustrated and just wanted to leave. Having the bartenders take food orders / serve food while they're trying to take drink orders / make the drinks is, in my opinion, is too hectic. I felt bad that they were trying to keep up with the bar and kitchen and doing things simultaneously, with only two bartenders as well. They were really nice to us but service overall was slow especially the kitchen. Not much memorable food except for the A5 Tartare and the fried tempura zucchini for me personally. I thought the food was a bit saltier for me. I ordered more items as well so not every picture you see is part of the omakase. I don't think the happy hour omakase was worth it tbh. *DineLA Experience* We came back for DineLA because the menu/price seemed worth it ($55 for 7 courses - 8 if you count the two nigiris individual courses, 9 if you count the miso soup). TLDR: Food is generally good and our waiter was great but there's just too many things we had issues with. Price/Value: Yes, it was worth the price and we left feeling full. **Caveat: Our waiter gave us two extra dishes on the house, which did play a role in feeling full but without it I still think we would've been full. Menu/Food: You get a variety of their items so it's great, but overall felt there were issues with dishes across the board. The miso soup they start you off with is... interesting to say the least. It tasted like they put in yuzu or something to add a bit of flair and I was not a fan. It was also way too salty/too much miso being used. The szechuan sweet soy that comes with the temaki was a bit odd and we would've preferred plain soy sauce - the sauce was too sweet. It would've been nice if we got at least one more nigiri. The broccoli katsu is an interesting concept - better than I expected but they definitely give you a lot of pieces, to fill you up on this as it's quite heavy. We also felt too many dishes utilized ponzu/yuzu - I love ponzu and yuzu but it got to a point where the dishes with ponzu or yuzu started tasting the same and it gave off a feeling of overusing it because they just discovered the ingredient (which I recognize they didn't just discover ponzu/citrus but that's how it came off). The rice they served with the pork belly was offensive to say the least.... It was so mushy I couldn't understand how a sushi/Japanese restaurant could put out such low quality cooked rice. My husband ordered the sake pairing but it wasn't really a pairing because they just brought the sake whenever and not necessarily for a specific dish. The dishes also don't necessarily come out in the order they're listed on the menu, which our waiter did inform us at the beginning. Service/Overall Experience: Our waiter, Quan was great!! He was very attentive, checking in enough without it feeling overbearing, and made sure to explain the sakes my husband got. A gripe we had was the food came out way too fast. At one point we had 3 different dishes on our table and they came out with another dish. I understand wanting to turn the tables quick but when you have multiple courses I think communication between the staff is so important. If you see dishes already on the table when bringing out the third one, maybe hold on the fourth one... We actually overheard the table next to us asking to slow down the pace. Lastly, when we received our bill, one of the dishes that were on the house was charged and a sake that was part of the pairing was charged separately. I understand mistakes happen, but something similar happened last time as well.... I highly recommend double checking your bill to make sure you're not being charged for something you didn't order. For the dish on the house, it was explained to us that it was "charged" but there was a discount applied for the full amount so essentially net zero. Which I guess is okay, but the bigger issue is that the recommended tip is based on the full price that includes this item you technically didn't order!! We thought this was quite shady. read more

A girls night dream! I arrived on time which NEVER happens but of course parking is so difficult . As a result, I ended up late. Valet is $20 which seems steep but the street parking in the neighborhood stops at 6 pm, the metered parking ends up costing more, and the lot across the street has a sign that says $10 but it's really $15 and card only no cash. Anyways the parking wasn't going to stop my vibe! The ambiance is super cute with patio seating, indoor restaurant seating , and a decent size bar. There's a sushi bar too! We skipped the pork but kept the rice to eat with the fried chicken and salmon which was a great idea. The nigiri was a standout we had the dorade and bincho. Both super flavorful and perfectly sauced. The rice was balanced with sweetness and firm texture. The desert was yuzu which I can't get enough of . I have nothing but good things to say about Uchi. This review is for the happy hour only. The interior of Uchi is beautifully decorated with a great ambiance. There's a wide selection of food and drinks on the special happy hour menu. We tried a good selection of the food offerings. Our favorites were the scallion pancakes which are in the shape of little fish and come with a pat of butter topped with lemon or yuzu zest and chives, the fish nuggies which are very crispy fries pieces of fish served with a dipping sauce, and the "bincho" albacore hand roll. Both of the signature cocktails (Subarashi and Tsurai) were well made, although there's no option to adjust the sweetness level because they are pre-mixed. Valet parking is quite expensive but we were lucky to find a meter on the side street right outside the restaurant. read more

very disappointed in the course tasting menu for 2. the first round was a singular grape with yuzu on top... which honestly set the tone for how the rest of the menu would go. the remaining dishes were also very small. i understand it's a tasting menu, but for most of the courses (everything except the sushi), the dishes were meant to be shared between two people. one of the courses was market tempura, which ended up being two small pieces of pepper tempura... like what?? the worst part of the experience was how long everything took. i have photos of every dish, and the time between each course was at least 20 minutes. waiting that long for dishes that were this small was extremely frustrating the taste of the food itself was good--lightly seasoned, which allowed the quality of the ingredients to come through. however, some of the sauces didn't pair well with the dishes. for example, the yellowtail hand roll came with a sauce that was overly sweet, almost like gochujang (korean pepper sauce). gochujang works well with sashimi, but it didn't complement a full hand roll drinks were good. we shared a bottle of sake and each had a couple of cocktails overall, would not be back read more

I've seen some videos online that the food isn't worth the price, so let me break it down. The omakase for two is the cheapest you'll find in LA, so no, you won't get two seafood platters. The key to having a lovely Uchi experience is sitting at the sushi counter and talking to your assigned sushi chef. Insane flavor in every dish! This is my second time here and we came right in time for menu change. Happy hour is worth every reasonably priced item. Hotate Nigiri is a must for me everytime I dine Japanese cuisine. Very yummy and on the smaller side. Fish nuggies were perfect; we had 3 orders for the table. It comes with about 5 nuggies. The outer crunch paired with the juicy fishy center is a dream worthy appetizer. Moment of praise for the star of the evening: dry aged fish wings! Are you kidding me? Omg chojang-jerk with habenero lime honey is an insane flavor bomb in the mouth. Wow, it was well presented, marinated and seasoned to perfection! Took my mom here to celebrate her birthday. We arrived at 5 PM so we could do the nine course happy hour Omakase. Our server, Keith, and our sushi chef, Jordan, were both fantastic. If your looking for a fancy sushi place, this is the place to go. It has a cool vibe, good background music and yummy sushi. The prices are pretty high but worth the splurge if your celebrating or just a sushi lover. We had tried a few rolls as well and they were also good but tasted standard. Service was good but they could have been a little more attentive as the place wasn't as busy when we were there on a Sunday night. Not sure I would go back unless I'm in the area. read more

Really liked it and thought the signature omakase was a really good deal. The interior and exterior was very beautiful and our waitress/bartender Carla was really nice and welcoming and knowledgeable, Would definitely recommend the scallop and would want to try other happy hour items.
