My sister and I rushed here for lunch but I think next time, I'd give it a miss. You have the option for a fixed price 3 course meal (starter, main and dessert with coffee, plus drink of choice) for a steal at €12.50 - but by Lisbon standards, it's quite pricey. Service was ok but the waiter seemed a little run off his feet (there were about 10 of us he was looking after). We chose to have salad (typical Portuguese salad, lettuce, cucumber and tomato with salt, vinegar and olive oil dressing) as a starter and along with the main (a meat and fish course combined) was perfectly filling, however given the reputation of Tágide, I was honestly disappointed. Perfectly seasoned but a little lacking in imagination. Maybe next time ordering a la carte would be the smarter choice?

After a long day at the conference with meetings, presentations, net-working, writing and everything else that comes with international science meetings we headed off for a quiet evening at Tágide. In normal fashion per myself, reservations for this restaurant was done before I even got on the plane at Arlanda (Stockholm, Sweden). The restaurant caught my interest with their honorary mention in Michelin's White guide and rather positive reviews beforehand. The fun thing is that if you don't know of its existence and/or location, the odds of just walking past are quite high. Instead of actually seeing a restaurant, the only thing you have is a black door. Inside the door is a rather empty hallway, but take a short walk up the staircase with white walls you enter a lavish room with high white ceilings, windows from the floor up to the ceiling overlooking the beautiful square below. It is that classical feeling of "wow" that just gets you because it is nothing what you expect. Our company was seated at a round table near the balcony overlooking the square so we had an amazing view over both the dining area and outside where the sun was setting in the bay. Before I get into the food itself let me first say how positively excited I was about the waiter. He was friendly, attentive, nice while still down to earth with just the right amount of personal touch - just about everything I expect but rarely experience. Hat's off. The food then. For starters I had a Tágide classic, the spider crab soup served with crispy parmesan tuile's. It was rustic, rich and beautiful in flavor. To this I had a white vine which was excellent. For main I had a braised lamb shank that was utterly divine and succulent, just melting in my mouth. It also had some braised turnip greens and sweet potato. Oh my. As always, a dinner must and on a sweet note. Although for me, I prefer desserts not overly sweet, it needs to have a variety of textures and components to get a perfect balance with sweet and sour. This was very well achieved with the chocolate fondant tartelette that was a bit sweet and rich with crunchy pastry. Paired with red berries and the champagne sorbet it was a match made in heaven. We sat there a while after dinner just enjoying the place, sipping on our wine and we had another cocktail before we left with happy stomachs all around. Well worth a visit and your money, without a doubt.

Once admitted we were seated immediately as the restaurant was only about half full. The menu was quite simple with just half a dozen appetizers and their main dish, seafood rice served for 1 or 2 people. The rice took about half an hour to prepare. It was delivered still bubbling a bit. The red tomato based soup was full of rice, mussels (some in the half shell), whole shrimp and not quite half a crab. The restaurant provided a shell cracker but the tiny forks for removing the crab meat from the leg would've been quite helpful. The rich tomato soup was the best seafood rice from our trip. We were also given a bottle of piri piri sauce and used about 4-5 drops at a time to add a little bit of heat and flavors to the seafood rice.

(FYI: lots of tourists) They only have 1 main which is their signature dish, the seafood rice. The rice is cooked in a seafood broth with a good mixture of shellfish like mussels, crab and shrimp. You can add lobster at an extra charge. This dish reminds me of paella, but with more soup? We didn't really get any appetizers but they do have a small selection if you want to add more to your meal. We had 3 people and ordered one main for the table. My husband is not the biggest seafood person so it was enough but if you have big eaters, then consider getting apps. The place is kinda small and cozy but not overly crammed together. The staff was efficient and warned me ahead of time how long it would take to make the dish.

Never had shrimp and capers together before but was surprisingly good! Hot figs with prosciutto, arugula and buffalo mozzarella was our second dish and was another pleasant surprise with this combination. So good. Our third dish was the pork cheeks with vegetables in a port wine sauce. The pork was incredibly tender and the sauce was fantastic. The food was creative and delicious. The service was very good and the staff was very friendly. We definitely recommend this restaurant as a consideration for dinner while in Lisbon.

English language menus definitely help, and so does an establishment that identifies possible food allergies. We made online dinner reservations here for our first night in Lisbon with high hopes of being able to make it til 8pm. HA! Luckily, they took pity on us when we showed up around 6:30. Servers were super friendly and helpful. I was so relieved when they greeted us in English - - my attempt at learning at least some Portuguese failed miserably. They sat us at a table right in the front window. They had a nice cocktail menu - - so we started with the ginjinha cocktail - - so refreshing. Nice sized menu with something for everyone. We ordered a few dishes to share - - all seafood and so delicious. Bathroom is in the back by the kitchen. No problem paying by credit card.

BUT... but we really appreciate a restaurant that "goes for it". You know- tries something new and different in a well thought out way. Even when they don't knock it out every time, you can tell when a restaurant is really going for it. That's Leopold in a nutshell. When you walk through that door, which reminded me of Alice going through the rabbit hole, I feel like you're transported into the home of a world class cooking family. And they're cooking just for you. The ambiance was totally unique for me- formal, but still homey at the same time. Modern, but still warm and inviting. They get 5-stars simply for the creativity and audacity of their dishes. There was onion broth with poached egg, banana and cheese, bread sausage (but not the traditional kind), fish with couscous... It's all very difficult to try to describe so I won't try. Simply try them if you're in Lisbon and you'll understand. Walk through that little door and be transported to a different culinary world. Not to be missed...

It seats just a couple of tables and is run by a lovely married couple. The chef cooks in an open kitchen while his wife serves and explains the food. It felt like we were invited to a private dinning experience in their home. The tasting menu is incredibly innovative and oozes the chef's love for Portugal. Every dish came with a back story about the origin of the ingredients as we are transported to different regions of this incredible country. I took notes on all the dishes because the combination of ingredients were really unlike anything I've tasted. Beef with kelp, cheese and banana puree - don't sound like they would go together but my god it was magical. The best part about this whole experience is that it definitely won't break the bank. Make a reservation and I promise you will not regret it!
