The lady working here was very nice and told us the place was the coming together of two adjacent stores, Panache Clothing and New York Exchange I believe. It's hard to nail down exactly what this place is - Part costume store, part specialty store, part fashion boutique. If you're looking for just about everything from a formal top hat to a skimpy leather outfit, some designer shoes or a knife you'd see in Underworld, they've probably got it. It feels uniquely Seattle and it was a fun place to spend 20 minutes! We were looking for a hat specifically as it was stereotypically raining outside. The selection was rather vast and included bowlers hats, townie type caps and some boss level top hats! In the back, we even found an American flag themed Fedora for $5 - Win! As I walked in, there were three ladies chatting, one or more that worked there, that glared at me and didn't ask if I had any questions and continued their conversation. I don't want to presume what was going through their heads, but judging by the looks I received, I can't be for certain. They had no idea why I was in there. I could've been there to buy something for a friend, in my case, thinking that there might be some men's clothes there, etc. is disappointing that West Seattle small business seems to have forgotten traditional business practices of welcoming, whoever walks through their door. The larger sizes sell quickly, which is normal in secondhand stores, so visit regularly to find your size. They are well curated, both selling and consigning, so don't get insulted if they reject some of your clothes for resale. They pay fairly based on my experience with other stores. I saw comments about the staff being snobbish - and I would prefer commenters mention distinct behaviors rather than label people. My experience is that they leave you alone to shop but will help if you ask. They don't ooze with chitchat - but are helpful. Yes you have to make an appointment to consign but that doesn't seem like a reason to give a 1-star rating. They have an easy consignee portal where you can check the status of your clothing and sales.

New York Exchange in Cap Hill is AMAZING…read more I'm going to a concert tonight that happens to be the first concert I ever went to...so I was on a mission to find something to match this black and pink shirt. I had been looking everywhere with no luck, and then while walking through Cap Hill I spotted the PERFECT pair of black and pink TrippNYC cargo pants in the window. I went inside and asked two lovely associates Tiara and Maria about them, and even though the store was out of stock, they did not give up on me. These two literally pulled a full mannequin out of the window display, moved all the merch around it, pulled the pants off and practically undressed the poor guy, just so I could try them on. I'm not kidding. That is NEXT LEVEL customer service. The mannequin was wearing a medium and I usually wear a large, so I thought it was over. But since they're super baggy cargos, we decided to try it anyway... PERFECT. FIT. Not only did they fit, but they matched perfectly. I walked out with exactly what I was hoping for, and honestly it made my whole day. Huge shoutout to Tiara and Maria for being so kind, helpful, and willing to go way above and beyond. It doesn't feel vintage, nor does it have a distinct 70's era feel like some of the other vintage shops I've gone to. It feels classy and sophisticated. Do you have a scotch and we can talk vintage buttons, sowing techniques, and made in Seattle brands? The only downside is that staff have appeared really snooty. I feel collectors of vintage know what they are looking for and this shop caters to this. Prices are also high for what I could hunt for online or from a private seller. The plus is that the clothes don't have the Goodwill smell and you are getting a garment that is really being looked over for holes and is steamed. The Lucky vintage on the ave is not as well curated. It has a different feel and it reminds me of a vintage Salvation Army . I feel it's the aesthetic, lighting and space. I do like the pops of pastels that stand out more in the clothes than the Ballard location. Staff are also snooty and don't really appear to greet or ask if I'm looking for something. As my review highlights positives and minor critiques, I hope they can serve as an opportunity to reflect on a customers perspective.

Ironically, the people are not the friendliest in the Ballard location- I've shopped there for years but am often ignored by the hipster sales staff even if I'm the only other person. My experience at the University is the opposite- super friendly cashier who was warm and welcoming. They have a beautiful website and Instagram page so there's lots of options to explore this exquisite (but sometimes snooty) business.
