I've been to this original Cudahy location many times since the drive up days of 2020, and I'm grateful to live nearby. The Pineapple Express is still a fave, as are the Cauliflower Bites appetizer. Would love to see ketchup on the tables for their tasty waffle fries, and a cola or diet cola option added to the cooler since that's pretty standard for fried food places. Adding these wouldn't take away from their fried vegan food mission, which Twisted Plants does with flare. read more

I am such a fan of Twisted Plants on Brady St. This weekend we decided to stop by their Cudahy location. We dropped by on a Saturday evening at around 7:20pm. Their Brady Street locale is open until 10pm on Saturdays but just a note that this location is only open until 8pm (and may pack up prior to that even). We ordered our dinner and indicated that we'd be dining in. We were the only customers in the place. We ordered and took a seat. The cashier proceeded to put chairs on top of tables so we ate surrounded by a completely packed up dining room (bizarre, given they didn't close for another 40 minutes). My dining companion ordered their up in smoke burger with onion rings and he ended up getting served fries instead. They were already so packed up we didn't want to have them cook up onion rings so he settled for the fries. It's also a bit spendy. Dinner for two (two burgers and fries and two waters) ran us $50+ after tp, which seemed a bit steep for order-at-the-counter-fast casual, even for vegan fast casual. Randomly we got similar vegan meals elsewhere recently and for nearly identical meals (burgers + fries + water), one cost us $37 and the other $29. So, yeah, $50 felt high. Why the 5 stars? Because, it cannot be denied--they serve up some kickin' vegan eats. Like--order literally anything on the menu and you can't go wrong. Up In Smoke burger = flavor heaven! Stopped by this spot while visiting Milwaukee and I'm so glad I did. I ordered the Up In Smoke burger and WOW absolute flavor bomb. Juicy, smoky, perfectly cooked, and piled high with all the good stuff. You would never know it wasn't vegan. I Paired it with crispy waffle fries (seasoned just right) and a blue lemonade that was straight fire. Tangy, sweet, and refreshing it was the perfect combo. Was looking for a casual vegetarian lunch. This place was the perfect alternative. Very laid back vibe. Ordered at the counter for inside seating. The sandwiches were delicious. Make it a combo and enjoy their strawberry lemonade and fries. The sausage party sandwich was indiscernible from animal-based protein. Okay, just because I stopped eating meat doesn't mean I don't want a greasy burger meal. And Twisted Plants offers just that. Let me tell you, this place is insanely good. Serving up "burger joint for stoners" vibes, this place is definitely the most laid back of their 3 locations. The hours here are the most limited, but the staff is great and parking (though limited to street) is a breeze. I am firmly of the opinion that Twisted Plants can make a believer out of even the most rigid carnivore. It's just that good. Do their burgers taste *exactly* like meat? No. But is it ridiculously flavorful and enjoyable to eat? ABSOLUTELY. Order the Pineapple Express. Add jalapenos to it, if you like a kick. And just enjoy. Trust me. It's gooey and messy and so, so good. Add the waffle fries on the side and you will honestly forget that this place is plant based. For added pleasure, get the cauliflower bites. If you already enjoy plant based foods, you will 100% like this place. If you don't typical eat plant based foods or are unsure of trying it, Twisted Plants is truly a great starting point. I had the privilege of being invited to try the cauliflower bites at Twisted Plants today. After talking to the staff at the counter and receiving a very gracious welcome, I waited at my table for my treat to be served inside the restaurant. What a charming location. This little spot in Cudahy is located in main street next door to a childcare facility not far from the airport. When you step inside this colorful little cafe, you're greeted warmly by the staff and given immediate courteous attention! The cashier even took the time to read the ingredients on the cookies to me when the print was too small for me to see. I truly appreciated that!!! The prices are very reasonable for the vegan foods and the restaurant specializes in sandwiches made with Beyond Meat. Because of my dietary requirements, I cannot eat Beyond Meat but those sandwiches had my mouth watering with temptation! It was hard to wait for the cauliflower bites so I was glad they arrived quickly! I tried the BBQ bites. They were very spicy. I enjoyed them very much. They were not, at all what I expected! That's good! See, I don't like cauliflower! If those bites had tasted like "white broccoli" for 1 second, I would not have been happy. The OG in Milwaukee for vegan comfort food. Soooo good! Everything on the menu is yum worthy and you'll never miss the animal products. The cauliflower bites and fries are personal favorites; I also love Up in Smoke. I haven't yet been to the Brady Street or West Allis locations, but I've no doubt they're just as awesome as Cudahy. I'd recommend trying Twisted Plants for their holiday meals. Your Thanksgiving will never be the same! My only constructive criticism is I'd love it if they changed up the menu now and then. Since I only have one little tummy, and it fills rather quickly, I was hard pressed to pick a couple of things that I could try, prepared to have the leftovers on another day. The spicy sauces atop those thick, crispy and perfectly seasoned tater wedges... All I can do is shake my head as no words hath I. This may definitely be the end...of my waistline. Hot Box - This is apparently on their secret menu. It's spicy vegan fried chicken with friends. Well, it's not the least bit spicy, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's de-freggin-licious. That crispy, seasoned coating on that vegan chicken with a perfect texture that wasn't too chewy, but not too thick or gluten-y (if you know what I mean). SALTED CARAMEL SHAKE - I do not know if this shake is seasonal or not. I do not know when the winds of life will blow me back to Wisconsin. I came here for lunch with a friend of mine that is a vegetarian. You order at the counter and they bring the food out to you. It's a cute diner style atmosphere. They have a decent amount of seating. The lunch hour was kind of busy but the noise level was fine. I ordered their hot wings as a meal and my friend got one of their sandwiches. We both loved our food. The hot sauce had great flavor. The one drawback is that being vegan, there was no blue cheese or iteration of it. Oh, finally! We finally made it to Twisted Plants, which is one of the restaurants featured in Milwaukee Black Restaurant Week 2021. I know many people have been raving about this place, and with it serving plant based fare, it was time to head down to Cudahy and give it a try. It's easy to order online and you can have your order "for later" and get an estimated curbside pickup time. You get a confirmation text as well. Now, on to the food! Oh my! As soon as we got the food, it smelled delicious, super fragrant! The "How High" sandwich (shredded jackfruit with bbq sauce!) definitely hits the spot. I had heard a lot of good comments about this place so I decided to give it a try with hubby. One thing that you really need to pay attention to before you go: the order time. They open at noon (which can be a bit inconvenient for early lunch fans like us). If you put in an order before noon (you can do it on the same day through their online system), you should expect to get your food at 12:30PM or maybe 12:40PM depending on the order volume. We got their Up'N Smoke burgers and hot cauliflower bites. Big portion size. The burgers tasted good but were kind of heavy in smokehouse bbq sauce. We both particularly liked the plant-based patty & fried onion rings. They serve yummy, golden, crispy waffles fries on side - awesome! The hot cauliflower was so-so. Maybe we should get BBQ sauce or sweet chili sauce. Maybe they would have tasted better if we ate them right away. They smelt so good in our car but tasted kind of salty and mushy after we took them home. They were spicy indeed! Delicious vegan burger joint that has marijuana themed decorations. This was the first thing I ate in Milwaukee, and I am so glad I found it. Tried the Up in Smoke with tater tots. Superb burger, but I felt like I could have done without the onion rings and the plant based bacon didn't add much flavor or texture. Something that real bacon does. I'm not vegan myself, but treats like this make me see that you can still get loads of flavor with meat alternatives. We got a the Up'N Smoke Burger and 2 orders of cauliflower bites to share. So, I went back to Twisted Plants with my friends and ordered my normal order. I got the Soul Plane, some cauli wings to share, and a Lemon Shake. I was SO disappointed felt. The sandwich was great but the fries were so oily and soggy. My friend's burger was the same. I always buy the cauli bites to share (because as you can see from my previous pics it's large enough to share), but when I opened up the wings I gasped to see the drastic change in the size of the cauli bites (see pic) and the amount... for $11 it was not worth it at ALL! I LOVE Twisted Plants! As a vegetarian I'm not usually too picky and most restaurants have vegetarian options that are pretty good but I love when I'm able to order anything off the menu at a place, and the food here is SO GOOD! My favorite is the Superbad. I've tried a few though and always like them. My husband is not a vegetarian but loves eating here and often asks if we can get carry out and I've had plenty of non vegetarian friends eat here and enjoy it. Also... their fries are soooooo good! I usually do carry out and they are pretty punctual and the food always travels home well. I think the inside space is cool too, it feels really cozy and I love all the posters and art. Parking isn't too bad but it is street parking so you might have to park a block away. read more

COVID-19 service -- The location: Easy to find on a main road in Cudahy. There's free 2-hour parking out in front and a little way down. I wasn't close enough to see if there's a designated pick-up spot. The service: Awesome. We ordered by phone, paid by phone, and did curbside pick-up. All we needed to do was call to say we had arrived and to identify our vehicle. They gave us an estimate for when our food would be ready for pick-up. Easy peasy. The man who brought out our food checked to make sure it was our order (though I might have been reaching for the bag at the same time, I'm sorry my hunger interfered with you doing your job!). He was wearing both a mask and gloves, and I made sure I was wearing a mask for our interaction. The food: Incredible. Little kids know what's up when they say certain shapes of pasta or potatoes taste better. Why do we forget that when we grow up? The waffle fries were glorious. Nicely seasoned, and perfect eating temperature for the car. Hubsy and I each got our own burger, but we sliced them in half so we'd each get to try a good chunk of the other one. Pineapple Express: perfect. Gooey cheese, just enough tang with the pineapple, and a tender burger. Cooked to perfection. I didn't expect the pretzel bun, so I was pleasantly surprised and very grateful. Still Smokin': delightful. Not the same type of fireworks in terms of flavor that the previous burger had, but a perfect comfort food flavor with the smoky cheese, mushrooms, and onions. This one was also slippery and I needed a napkin. Next time: I'm curious about one of the jackfruit sandwiches or the fake chicken. I've been a vegetarian for over 20 years, and this is one of the best vegan burgers I've ever had. Maybe THE best. Wow. The prices are higher than your average take out burger place, but in line with what you'd pay at a nicer restaurant, and entirely plant-based and SO GOOD, so totally worth it! This isn't just any burger! I love the variety on the menu along with the BYO option if you want to create your own masterpiece. The kids menu makes it easy to order dinner for the whole family. We tried a wide variety of options and everyone loved what they got, including my kids. Online ordering and pickup is super easy. The staff were so friendly and on top of the delicious food, the staff really made me want to visit again. I have to say, it took me one try to become a fan - it had been on my list of vegan restaurants to try for a few months... since it's in Cudahy, it's a little out of the way for me. I had the "Up in Smoke" with 'bacon' as well as waffle fries and not only was it tasty, it was very filling too! I recently went vegetarian, trying more and more vegan meals and have really ventured into "impossible burgers" or "plant-based burgers" but this makes me want to try more of them! I think the best time I go, I'll be trying the Superbad. I also heard (afterwards) that they have strawberry lemonade that you have to get. The only thing preventing me from the 5-stars is the confusion around the ordering process. We wanted to order online or call ahead but the line was busy and the website wasn't up. We crossed our fingers and hoped they were open until 8p as advertised on IG and Google Maps. They were. You just need to wait at the door until someone from their staff comes out to grab your order.
