It reminds me of the now closed Beans and Barley in the early 80s--before the fire. There is also a variety of fresh produce and sometimes bakery for those in need. This is truly such a beautiful, intentionally created co-op in Milwaukee. Christie does everything they can to give back to the community and this space speaks volumes of its impact on the surrounding community!! They just recently introduced this community fridge, basically if you need and they have it, come get it!! This is in addition to the free offerings they had on their black wired shelf AND their white little cabinet of free toiletries. Need to refresh your closet? They also have a closet of free clothes for all ages, genders and sizes! You can also find some products from local vendors around Milwaukee sold there! Be extra sure to check out the products from We Have Always Been Related collective (@whabr_kin on ig) that sell their medicines there too from Elderberry cordial, to bath salts to herbal mixes! While limited hours, it makes the trips extra worth it because the food is the cherry on top! Amazing vegan options that are cooked and crafted by amazing community members invested in this co-op's amazing mission! Best part? It is a pay-what-you-can, aka you decide what you want to give!! I saw a review complaining about the price for the size--again YOU decide what you pay and also this is a locally owned and ran establishment, not a chain restaurant with obscene portion sizes! They operate off of donations and grants only! These are the spaces that we need more of, especially when they are centered on listening and serving the surrounding communities. read more

Friendly staff and amazing tasty food. I had a cold and even then I was still able to smell and taste the flavor! I can't imagine how much delectable it would be if I wasn't sick! Pay as you can afford place, I think this is the first place of its kind I've ever been to; it's neat to come here and realize this place would thrive on trust that people would pay however they see fit. The food is worth every whatever you can afford penny! Cozy and quaint places this place is clean and has cute interiors decorations. The chef was very warm and friendly too! read more

#vegan Overall great placed, few reasons for a mixed review. I love the concept -pay what you want. Plus it is vegan, woo! I have had a few things Ive enjoyed, few I havent ... they did a breaded fried veggie dish - SO GOOD!!! I'd say to order ahead because sometimes there can be await. Again overall good food. Great people. The first time I went I got a burger, drink and a dessert so I paid a good amount. Unfortunately the size of the items was very tiny so I felt a little jipped. I know I will have probably helped to pay for another persons meal but I just feel anxious now because I want to be fair but also not pay 10$ for an item the size of my thumb. So it is a little tricky. It is close to work so I will continue to try new items. Also... check their open schedule! read more

OMG. I just love it here. Love. Tricklebee is a pay what you can cafe. There is soulful, soft music playing. Fresh, lively plants throughout. Window curtains. A Black Lives Matter sign on the wall. Also, I'm coming back to purchase holiday gifts. They have bags of coffee, fresh, local honey, handmade jewelry, locally made cookbooks and wonderfully astute children's books. Everytime that I eat here I " yumm" out loud before I realize that I'm doing it. The menu is unique every day and the menu utilizes local produce and organic products. Have you ever wanted to tip the chef? I did today at Tricklebee. The entire cafe is vegetarian and there are many vegan options There is hot coffee and hot tea to drink. This weekend, I had tea from Alice's Garden. It was so good and so comforting. Have you been to Alice's Garden? It's one of my favorite places. read more

This is the spot! Menu changes daily! Fresh ingredients! Awesome owners!! As you walk up to the door, you will see the chalk board menu of today's menu on the sidewalk, usually consisting of a main dish, soup, salad, multiple desserts, unique Juice, coffee, and water. Now you commit to walk in the door. Inside you will see seven or eight tables, continue to the back of the room where you will place your order. The owner will be waiting for you with a smile and information about their lovely space. The menu is completely customizable. Half portions, double portions, however you want it. And as far as payment goes, it is whatever you can. Drop some money in the jar, or use your Credit card. Pay zero, pay it forward for the next person, or whatever you want. No one is judging you here. After you place your order, find your spot. The food will start arriving at your table almost immediately. The drinks and salad come first,then the main, followed by the desert. After you are finished, there are bus tubs and compost bins located by the back desk where you placed your order. What a delightful place! This cafe deserves far more recognition for their great concept, great service, and great food. Most notable: this is a "pay what you can" cafe. There is a sign that explains the cost range for their food (something like $4 - $7) but ultimately you decide how much you can pay - and yes, they do take debit/credit cards. Because of this, you can also ask for specific serving sizes, which helps them to control food waste (or, alternatively, helps you fill your belly!). The menu changes daily - I went for lunch and found between 3-5 options, with a vegan/vegetarian base and option to add meat (which I did... lamb meatballs in my moroccan stew). There are also a few dessert offerings and a nice flow of coffee or tea. Tricklebee is cozy - the staff bring you a fork and cloth napkin, check in to make sure everything is good, and are more than willing to explain their concept. There are a half dozen seating options; it feels like a place you could stop in for a quick lunch or meet a friend (and their kiddos...there is a toy kitchen here, guys) and spend the afternoon. I hope more folks learn about this cafe and start bringing their friends. We need more local businesses in this part of town, especially with such a great community focus. read more

Tricklebee serves amazing food in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The tahini brownies were the best thing I've ever tasted! The portion sizes are small so don't be afraid to try more than one thing off the menu if you're having trouble deciding. And the food is that rare intersection of healthy and delicious. The best thing is knowing that your donation (it's pricing model is pay-what-you-can) helps them serve the community.
