The ladies that run the shop are all volunteers and they are each so sweet and helpful! You can also make an offer when it comes to items which is nice too! I had a scheduled volunteer day and time and woke up on time to go and i texted POC to confirm and they told me that the other volunteer wouldn't be in (if i didnt confirm with a text i probably would have shown up without notice) and i reached out to schedule another day and received no word. I would say i am fairly patient and understanding person with rescues because they are so busy but i would recommend for this rescue to have a dedicated staff member to help volunteers and have a calendar put together and just be better organized. I unfortunately wont be volunteering here anymore. They are doing good work but im bummed because i did want to volunteer here but as a person that values organization it just didnt fit.

Rescuing animals is not for the faint of heart, and comes with a lot of dirt, heartache and possibility of illness. Fortunately, the people who run the group are willing to overlook all the obstacles and still help the poor creatures who desperately need them. I have helped them photograph dogs, worked adoption events, fostered dogs and am now fostering cats, and know that the good this organization does far outweighs any negatives. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone who wants to volunteer, but this type of work requires a lot of strength and determination to help those who need it most. The joy of helping saving a life is the best feeling in the world.

I was "recruited" into the group after I witnessed a weekend glamour shot day while I was walking dogs at the Baldwin Park Shelter. Volunteering with UHA fulfills a part of me that had been unfulfilled since I had my first pet fish. I am surrounded by people who love animals as much as me, who don't mind having extended discussions concerning potty training, dog behavior, cuteness levels, and types of poop. I feel important, I feel accomplished, I feel like I have people to turn to if I'm having trouble. UHA's main concern is the individual, whether it's the animal or the person. It isn't about numbers, it isn't about politics. It's about finding the best home for one animal, the best fit for the owner. I couldn't imagine a more amazing, selfless, and helpful set of people and animal rescuers. They've made a difference in countless animals' lives, countless owners' lives, and definitely, in my own life. If you're looking to adopt a new fur baby, or just need some help or information, UHA is your rescue!

While doing yard work in my front lawn, I discovered a baby Parrot resting in my neighbor's…read moredriveway. After 30-40 minutes, I noticed the parrot had not moved from the area even as I came within two to three feet from the bird. I was unable to verify if the bird was sick or injured. Fearing that if the baby parrot remained in this position, any local cats and/or coyotes might get to it, I placed it in a cage I had cleaned out and left unused for my two Yorkies. I contacted the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center for advice on what to do with it, as I am not able to keep a wild bird with my two dogs. I was on hold for approximately 4 minutes before speaking with a very pleasant, helpful, and friendly female employee. I explained the situation, and the Representative advised me that she would schedule a call with an animal care officer to pick up the bird. Twenty-five went by when, suddenly, a white Animal Control truck parked in front of my home. Wow! I was truly impressed by how quickly someone arrived to assist me. Officer Barajas introduced himself and approached the bird in the cage. Officer Barajas was extremely friendly and professional, and truly appeared to care about the baby parrot. After a brief examination of the bird, Officer Barajas gently removed the bird from the cage and examined it closely, and advised that the bird did not appear to be injured as it began flapping its wings and squawking. The bird did not attempt to fly away but instead perched on Officer Barajas' gloved hand. Officer Barajas placed the small bird in a small cage, and the situation was handled perfectly. This was a positive experience, and I DO believe that we did the right thing by having animal control handle it, as there is no doubt that if left to fend for itself, this baby parrot would not have survived much longer.

Which is even harder to do when Instagram algorithms keep showing you all the urgent dogs who are at risk for euthanasia. Well it finally worked because I finally decided to drive down to the shelter just to "look." It was so heartbreaking to see so many pets begging for affection and love. What made it even worse was only being able to save one. So how does one choose? Personally, I look for the ones who have been there the longest, the ones who have been returned, and the ones who haven't been networked. Basically the ones that are first to be euthanized. While the shelter provides me their assessment, I have found that it is not always accurate. Which is why doing a meet and greet in the play area is critical in making your own assessment of the dog. The meet and greet is key in planning for what kind of training and schedule the dog will need. I never assume that the dog will be perfect in every way as soon as I bring him or her home. Which is why I plan meticulously on how to successfully integrate this new family member into our lives. Being a veteran with PTSD helps me understand how difficult it is to go from chaos to being home safe again. Which is why patience is important to give the dog as much time as they need to decompress. Then I bring over the dog trainer to give me their behavioral assessment so we can get to work. So who's the lucky dog? None other than a dog I affectionately call Harry because when I first saw him he was behind bars and was underweight. It made me think of that scene from Harry Potter where Ron was telling his mom that Harry was being starved and had bars on his windows. Officially, we named him Dodger formerly known as Zeus! He was returned for not getting along with another dog. That may be true for that previous owner, but so far that has not been my experience. Especially because I did slow introductions and continue to separate as well as supervise any and all interactions. One thing to understand about the adoption process is that they are surrendered for numerous reasons. Owner died, having a baby, no time, bad behavior, homeless, can't afford them, etc. That's okay it happens. If you are new to adopting pets consider fostering first so you can be fully supported before making it official. Or even volunteer if you simply are not ready. Now that I'm an empty nester and after loosing my fur baby I was ready to open my heart to a dog who needed a home. I have all the time in the world to help him thrive and he truly is the best. If you have the space and need a companion, please consider fostering or adopting. So many wonderful animals are euthanized because there's no space. Take the drive down to the shelter and "look." I'm so glad I did. The thought of my dog being euthanized because he had zero interest breaks my heart. My mornings went from depressing starts to so much love from a dog affectionately staring at me from his dog bed. My lonely days are filled with laughter and joy from all the silly goofy antics. Teaching him how to trust again after what he has been through has been healing for the both of us. We make each other feel safe and I am incredibly thankful for him. We saved each other. Thank you to all the volunteers and staff who do their best. This job is certainly not easy, but I'm grateful for you all.

We filled out the paperwork and decided on a time she could do house check and paid the fees and we got to keep our puppy. Our puppy's name with the rescue was Whiskey and she's now called Bean.
