I needed to find a quiet and elegant place close to my work for a business dinner. I realized that I hadn't eaten at this place since it was called Chimera (or something like that) more than a decade ago. I was very happy with the atmosphere and volume level of the music + ambient noise. The food was excellent, if predictably expensive. The only slight disappointment was the bourbon cocktail I ordered which was just "OK", despite the fact that they call themselves a "whiskey bar". Just having expensive bottles of whiskey available is not the same as being a "whiskey bar" that tries to do something interesting with it. Bottom line is that this place is perfect for a fancy date night or business dinner, but nothing more casual than that. read more

The restaurant is kinda the same as most; dimly lit and random chairs for spice. The food came out fairly quick. The Caesar was very good and one of the highlights of the night. The crunchy textures mixed with the dressing were very nice. I didn't really enjoy the parm fries as much and most people because it just tasted too much like truffle oil. There were so how very oily but sauce less. The steak lacked loss of flavor lost of things looked nice but need salt and other seasoning. The crispy capellini was very flavorful but I feel like it doesn't work because most of the noodles stay hard where some of the others are soft. Twenty Eight is located at the Google Center on Jamboree. You can self-park in the parking structure (enter from Fairchild Road) and get your ticket validated when you enter the restaurant. We made reservations online and had to put in a deposit that was reduced from the final bill. BRUSSELS SPROUTS ($14) - the brussels sprouts were very well charred which added to its flavor. They were slightly sweet and salty from the salame. It's a good dish if you need some veggies. 4/5 MACARONI & CHEESE ($12) - they used gemelli for their pasta shape and I wasn't the biggest fan of it but the dish was still good and cheesy. I really liked the melted cheese on top and I especially liked the crab meat add-on! 4.5/5 PAPPARDELLE ($28) - the pasta was fresh and I liked the meat in it. There wasn't a lot of sauce and I would've liked more but it was still a flavorful dish. 4.5/5 ANGUS FILET MIGNON ($92) - they had two size options: 8oz for $52 and 16oz for $92. The meat was nicely charred on the outside and so tender on the inside. On its own it could've used more salt or other seasoning but I liked dipping it into its own juices on the plate. This was my favorite dish! 5/5 CENTRAL PARK ($24) - this was a smoked drink but the rosemary smelled and tasted a little too burnt. It was a stiff drink and I liked it but the rosemary was a little off-putting. 3/5 THE REBEL ($18) - this drink was very light and easy to drink. The sugar rim made it sweeter and on top of that the drink had a good presentation. 4.5/5 AN EARLY FLIGHT ($17) - they didn't have the earl grey-infused cognac so I just opted for normal cognac. I don't know how big of an effect that had on the balance of the drink but it was too floral-y from the creme de violette. I can't imagine it would change it that much or else they wouldn't offer it but it just wasn't pleasant to drink. 2/5 I wasn't a fan of the cocktails but the food was delicious! In my opinion, it's a raised scallion pancake and will compliment any other plate in the menu. The linguine with shrimp and crab was a good size portion and can be shared. This place is a hidden gem! Considering that you'd probably only find it if you're actually searching for a restaurant on Yelp because the sign for the restaurant is very small. Located in the same plaza as the Google building, it can be somewhat a challenge to find the first time. Keep going straight and you'll see the cute little restaurant. My girlfriend and I went on Halloween night to find the restaurant close to empty, but that was perfect for us to have a nice, private dinner in the available outdoor seating. The restaurant was dimly lit inside, and outside too. Perfect for a date night. We ordered the following: American Wagyu Hanger, Angus Filet Mignon, Caesar Salad, Central Park, Truffled Parmesan Fries, Herbed Baby Potato, Garlic Fried Rice, and the Black Sesame Bread Pudding. How was the food? - American Wagyu Hanger: This was my steak order, I got it medium rare. The meat was tender, juicy, and tasty. A darn good cut of meat. I had gotten it with garlic butter, which was very subtle. - Angus Filet Mignon: This was my girlfriend's steak. She got it medium rare as well. It was also juicy and tasted good. (not pictured) - Caesar Salad: Delicious. A pile of crunchy lettuce and some anchovies covered in cheese. The dressing hits the spot. - Central Park: I love whisky and this cocktail was smooth, despite it being smoked. It wasn't overwhelming. - Truffled Parmesan Fries: These were heaven sent. I loved them. Thinly cut, crispy, and covered in parmesan cheese. What more could I ask for? - Herbed Baby Potato: These were pretty good. Salty and crispy. Not as starchy as you think they'd be. - Garlic Fried Rice: So good. This pairs well with steak. The garlic is not overwhelming. - Black Sesame Bread Pudding: A dessert that's hard to not finish. It's good, and you'll want to eat it all. Service was good. The dishes came out intermittenly, which we liked. Our waters were refilled without question. Parking is validated so don't forget to ask. A hidden gem for sure! My boyfriend surprised me with a visit to this place on our anniversary and I was impressed with how lovely it was! It's around some office buildings and parking was confusing at first, but thankfully when we called to let them know we'd be a few minutes late, we were told they had valet that night. That made things much easier lol. It is $5, which was really good considering it's Irvine! Inside felt upscale and noise level was pretty good! Our server was Hayley and she was fantastic. She gave us excellent starter recommendations and checked in on us frequently. Our waters were also filled frequently during the course of dinner without us ever asking! Once they see anything less than a full cup of water, they were quick to fill it back up which was much appreciated. Our food came out at great timing as well. We placed our starters first, which came out in great time before we placed our entree orders. The food here was amazing!! I'm still thinking about it now. Griddled Scallion Pao: recommended by Hayley and did not disappoint at all. The inside was soo fluffy and soft and the exterior was crispy and buttery! It felt like super soft garlic bread. Definitely recommend! Spicy Salmon Crudo: I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was not spicy at all (great for me bc I cannot handle spice very well). The salmon melted in my mouth and was bursting with citrusy flavor. It came with small tortilla chips that paired well with it. I also could not get enough of this! Linguine: I'm a pasta girly and this one stood out to me the most. They were generous with the crab and shrimp and they were both so good. You can definitely taste the seafood flavor in the sauce, which definitely elevated the dish! Shrimp was cooked perfectly and was probably my favorite part of this dish hahah my bf also enjoyed it as well. American Wagyu Hangar: my bf ordered this for himself, medium rare and it was so juicy and tender! I tried a piece and was surprised with how tender it was. Potato Purée: bf ordered this to go with his order since his order didn't come with any sides and it was basically just soft mashed potatoes. It was just alright for me! The rebel: Hayley had informed us that wild berries were switched for strawberries for this so I had to try it! The lychee flavor was very prominent and I loved it. We were bummed to find out that the tiramisu is no longer being offered here. It sucks since I was excited to try it when I saw the menu online, but that's okay! We were pretty stuffed by the end of dinner anyway. I think everything was pretty good portions. Overall, we had a great time and will definitely return. Boy do we love us some steak! And it doesn't get better than a big juicy tomahawk cooked to a perfect medium rare! At @twentyeightoc we enjoyed a date night of scrumptious dish after dish starting with the endive mushroom salad, working our way to the wood fire cooked tomahawk and ending with a warm chocolate cake a la mode. The garlic and sauce to compliment the steak is to die for. 3. Linguine- this pasta was ok. While we were devouring the steak, we dig into the pasta a tad later and it was still hot! You could still see the steam while mixing the pasta. I felt like the pasta was the slight saltier and sour side but it was still good. 4. The last time I came to try this place spontaneously, they had the place closed off for a private event. So this time, I came with reservations for a Saturday night. We were seated right on time and it didn't take us long to order because the menu is short and simple. Which is perfect. The salad we ordered was nice and crunchy. The dressing was a bit too light for me in flavor. Despite the salad being dressed more than I prefer, the salad dressing didn't bring too much to the table. But I still enjoyed it overall for how fresh it was. The filet steak I got was perfectly cooked and tasted to its core like meat. In other words it had a very meaty and smoky flavor. Hard to explain but the beauty of it was its simplicity-- it wasn't particularly flavored as a Mastros steak might be, but it was unique and good. The truffle parm fries were my favorite part. Shoestring fries with plenty of truffle salt in every bite. Loved it. The drinks were also fantastic. I stuck to the around the world cocktail (which is a version of a negroni) and enjoyed it a lot. The one caveat is they are a bit stingy with the pour, especially because the ice cube takes up most of the drink. For that price, I prefer the cocktails at porch and swing. read more

Food: Everything here was amazing but the heritage pork shoulder (3/5) the reason for this might because the pork didn't taste well and it didn't go with the buns. I believe they were going for a Chinese pork bun but it went wrong. The Japanese A5 wagyu (4/5) because they serve too much fat rather than the meat itself. Our first time here for my husband's bday and all in all we did enjoy the experience. Service was great! They were attentive but not too attentive. Valet is 6 dollars not too bad. The food/drinks- We got the American wagyu Zabuton, bone merrow, crab and shrimp linguine, sea salt cast iron bread, truffle fries, the whiskey flight with various whiskeys, the rebel cocktail, sesame bread pudding and the bday dessert with lavender ice cream and strawberry cake. They ran out of the scallion bao so we couldn't try it. The steak we got medium rare and it was slightly overcooked and not super tender I would say I won't miss that dish. Pasta had a healthy amount of crab and shrimp and was good. The fries, steak, bread were SUPER salty. Overall the pasta was the best. Bone marrow had bread crumbs/panko in it and it was soggy, it was by far the worst of what we ordered. The homemade lavender ice cream was SO good! I would say that was my favorite item there. Wish they had that in the main menu I would order that again. All in all we may go back to try other items but can't say for sure I would crave anything in particular. Sesame bread pudding was good but way too sweet. They have a similar black sesame mochi cake at izakaya osen but the one at izakaya was better. Whiskey flight was fun and my cocktail-vodka, lychee, moscato etc was good. The corking fee here is 30 dollars though. Ambiance was fine. Dimly lit but could still see inside. I feel like good warm service is easy to accomplish and yet seems missing at a lot of places lately. Food choices here are good. We usually get one of the steaks with a salad and a side. We grabbed dinner here for our anniversary the other night and it was delicious! The restaurant itself is small and intimate. The service was really great. Everyone was so nice and helpful. We ordered the whiskey flight as they have a really great and unique selection. We opted for the scallops crudo and endive salad to start. Neither my boyfriend and I really like scallops usually, but these were so good and so beautifully presented. The endive salad was also very tasty and refreshing. I really liked the chicken, but my boyfriend wasn't a fan. And we both demolished the fries. They were so so good. They gave us this perfect little dessert to end our meal too. I went here recently for a holiday party, so this review comes with the caveat that this was not normal circumstances. The location is a bit tricky to find, hidden inside a building in an office complex at the Newport Beach/Irvine border. Your first entry is at the whisky bar, which also has an outdoor patio. The audio in here was terrible-of course, it was packed with people, but shouting level was nearly needed to have a conversation. Hard surfaces all around make it poor for a romantic spot. Once you go around the wall of the bar, you are in the dining area. Everything was beautifully decorated, but I am really curious how they turn this place back into a restaurant. It was a few large rooms which can be separated by sliding floor to ceiling glass doors. It was just a giant room with a lot of round tables set up. Again, audio was very poor in this place and I can't imagine it's a place to have a romantic dinner. If there is one thing that seriously needs improving to up the ambiance, I would spend money on the audio experience. I had the chilean sea bass for my main course. The starter salad was very good, with fresh mixed greens and berries. The sea bass was a very small portion, with a very strange sweet sauce. I understand how challenging it is to serve nearly 200 people, so I can forgive that mine was not hot but lukewarm. I noticed the steaks served to other guests were very rare. Again, i understand what a challenge this can be. Finally, dessert was something like a floating island-very ethereal and light and not at all filling, which was nice-it was not too much food, but I would have liked a little more substance all around. Service was generally good and attentive. Given my experience here, it's hard to say I would want to visit it as a normal restaurant. The restaurant was able to accommodate a last minute reservation as well as seat us at a high table per my request. Twenty Eight was a hip and trendy restaurant that was located in a business area. My coworker noted the impressive display of whiskeys on their shelves. Another plus was that they validated parking. I ordered a couple of cocktails including the "Double Fortune" and "Enter the Herby Six Flavors." The Double Fortune was quite unique. I'm a huge fan of creamy egg white drinks, but the flavors of the sesame oil, whisky, and citrus did not meld well, in my opinion. Is Enter the Herby Six Flavors a Wu Tang reference? Made me think of Enter the 36 Chambers, so if it is a Wu reference I find that awfully clever! Now this drink was fire. It was a refreshing gin drink with chia seeds, basil, and grapefruit. We managed to get a few rounds of cocktails and a couple of appetizers ordered. Due to a large party, however, it took forever to get our drinks. The saving grace was our waitress, Madison, who was very attentive and transparent. We would've stuck around for their appealing dinner menu, but our experience of the wait was not worth enduring further. read more

My main was the sea bass in a lemon butter jus and it was rich and tender, perfectly cooked. The roasted potatoes on the side were fantastic as well. The drink selection was small with only a few reds and white wines available, but the servers were very attentive to the glasses that needed refilling. It felt cold and odd, like eating in an open office or business room. Food overall was delicious. We had short ribs and salmon for entrees and grilled octopus with a tomato sauce as appetizer. Everything was flavorful and quality was good. Cocktail drinks were good too. Unfortunately, portions were small with not much additional sides on the plate.
