I received terrible customer service from one of the workers who identified himself as "Jordan" because he projects hostile and aggressive negativity towards Black people. His arrogant and rude behavior indicates the store owners treat Black people disrespectfully in general, refuse service to Black customers as a policy, and don't care who knows it. He never missed a moment to insult or otherwise make demeaning and disparaging remarks. When I changed my decision about my online purchase and demanded a refund, he quickly sneered "The purchase didn't go through anyway." In other words "Jordan" insulted me by implying that my credit card didn't work and I had no money. Such mean spirited remarks reveal genuine contempt for Black people. In fact, the managing staff Tweedy and Pop later forwarded my personal information contained in their customer service database to the Seattle Police Department in order to file a no trespassing order against me. The managing staff also forwarded the same prejudicial information to nearby Wallingford businesses because this is how whites treat Blacks in Seattle. I will exercise my legal rights against this and any other business that uses my personal information, including video and audio files, in order to legally harass or otherwise intimidate me because of my ethnicity. read more

I've been there multiple times and they are consistently friendly and helpful. The store, despite being physically quite small, has a great selection of various items needed for DIY projects including fasteners, paints. I even saw an iFixit computer repair kit, bicycle repair parts and pieces of wood last time I was there. The prices are slightly higher than, say, Home Depot, but you're paying for the location/convenience (it's right in the middle of Wallingford) and the staff. Once, I came in trying to find tools for a bike repair, and they steered me towards the tools that ended up being cheaper and more effective for me in the long-term. If busy, it can be a bit hard navigating through the narrow aisles, but they are part of the Ace Hardware network so you can order online for pickup. There is parking nearby. read more

They don't do them at the Wallingford store but referred me to another T&P store, even letting me know which employee to ask for. It was done perfectly. The customer service at this hardware store is simply outstanding. I am constantly amazed at how helpful the manager and all employees are at this store. I recently had to remove and open a lockbox and not only did the manager provide outstanding advice but he assisted with the work. This is the way a community hardware store should operate, not just sell products but help people solve their problems with their products. Prices for their products are reasonable and good value as well - it is just a much better place to shop than a big box store. read more

Last time I went in for a staple gun and took the time to be sure I knew how to load it and find the release buttons before I brought it home. I've shopped at this hardware store a few times now. Their stock supply is adequate, but their prices are very high. I understand they have to compete with Home Depot & Lowes. But the reason I will never shop there again is THEY HAVE THE WORST customer service I've ever experienced. I've worked in customer service for 22 years now. You don't get a welcome greeting. When I've asked for help, they act as if you're bothering them. There's always young guys, and one older manager who is must hate his job. Really condescending to their customers. Other people have complained that their customer service there is also terrible. My advice, go somewhere else. Makes me miss Stoneway Hardware. At least they were nice to their customers. read more

Over time I would go out of my way to visit this local hardware store. Always a good experience with hired staff. Today I experienced the co owner. When asking for help he snapped at me, and when asking him if I somehow offended him, the response was to belittle me And in front of another customer. I have never thrown a fit in a store before, but Tweedy and Popp was the first! They sold me the wrong can of paint - apparently there are two different brands, though no one asked me which one I needed - and then when I came back with the paint they charged me for the second can! I guess it's not the store's fault when they forget to ask you a key question about your paint, screw up your paint job, and make you have to get another can. I was livid, and argued with the manager for several minutes before paying for my second can and storming out of there. Tweedy and Popp, never again! read more

I was surprised to read some of the negative reviews here. I went here to get some moss-killer for my yard. I had some questions, and I had to wait for quite a while, but only because the older gentleman who was helping the young woman in front of me was giving her a very thorough explanation of what to do about her blackberry infestation. The service I received was comparable, if more concise. I guess I can see how some might, if they were rather sensitive, describe the service as "rude." I would call it "amusingly gruff," and actually found it kind of pleasant. It's one thing if they ignore you or something, but these are just no-nonsense old guys with a lot of questions to answer. The place is kind of fun to browse in, in a chaotic, Archie-McPhee's-meets-Home-Depot sort of way. Haven't visited the new location yet, but I was relieved when I found out they'd moved instead of going out of business. This place personifies "mom-and-pop" to me. read more

Very tight store and safety would significantly improve with one way isles. Customers passing one another within 1-2 feet although all in the store were wearing masks. Short version: the Wallingford location is a convenient neighborhood hardware store, but the prices, selection, and quality of some of the goods isn't as good as you will find at larger home centers. Even Stoneway Hardware & Supply (another Ace hardware) around the corner generally does better. Selection. If you need an extension cord or some batteries, you're probably going to do fine. If you are going in looking for either something very specific and a little out of the ordinary ("I need four tubes of black polyurethane caulk and a 3-foot squeegee") you may get lucky and you may not. If you need something really out of the ordinary ("I need 500' of 0.95" line trimmer line for a Husqvarna") you won't find it. That said, I'll keep going back here because only Ace makes a particular cleaner that I use. Price. Expect to pay anywhere from the same price as Home Depot to 30% more than Home Depot, depending. The fact that they're about to match HD on some things is actually great. But generally, you're looking at paying a premium. Service. I wouldn't go here because of the service. The folks here vary in terms of both knowledge and customer-friendliness. Sometimes the service is pleasant and helpful. Sometimes it's absent. Sometimes it's a bit rude. read more

This place gets 5 stars for customer service hands down. In the saga of "old house, oh #$%! what have we gotten ourselves into?" we've been making frequent stops to Tweedy & Popp. Let me reiterate that our level of expertise is close to 0 when it comes to diy home fixes. Yet in the past year, we managed to fix some plumbing issues, changed a very leaky faucet that wasn't your standard fixture, did some serious gardening, all with the help of folks at Tweedy & Popp. They have 2-3 older folks that are very knowledgeable and super friendly and a young fellow that is less experienced but just as eager to help. Chuck has been amazingly helpful in showing us from what pipe wrench to get to what packing string is and eventually how to use silicone tape on pipe end so the new faucet goes in smoothly. I am still not sure if what I explained above makes sense to anyone but myself but we got the work done. I will always stop by their store first and if and only if I can't find it there I'll go to the trouble of going to big stores like Home Depot. ~~~~~~ I just read other reviews and I get a very strong vibe that they cleaned up their act significantly since the 1-2 start reviews from 2008-2009. I usually try to avoid T&P's, as the service in it's old location across the street was usually bad. However, as I live in the neighborhood, I've been here a few times since they moved and felt that the service had gotten better. Until today. I found the one item I needed and brought it to the counter. The kid behind the counter looked like he would rather be anywhere else in the world. He took my item and mumbled something. After a few moments I realized he said "Want a bag?". I said no, and he ran my card and just stared at the floor, with his hair hanging down so I couldn't see his face. When my receipt came out he tossed it on the counter at me an then tossed the pen, too. The pen was one of those with a heavy bolt on the end. I shook my head at the rude service and signed. The receipt has printed on it 'Thank you", but that was more than I got from the loser behind the counter. It's amazing that in this economy, this guy has a job. My guess is that he is related to the owner. Who, if he is an older guy with white hair, was standing there the whole time. My recommendation...only shop here if you absolutely need to. Otherwise, drive a bit further and shop at a different place that values your business. read more

The older guy at the counter usually has his mask below his chin. To properly use a mask it should cover your nose and mouth. I've noticed this on two different occasions. I come in every few years looking for mini Benjamin Moore paint samples, always forgetting they stopped making them. The guy who works here most of the time is always really unpleasant about it, like he's offended I would have wanted to buy them. And today when I asked if he could ring up my custom-mixed $10 big "samples" while someone made them he refused and haughtily said I would "only get one of us at a time." I'll go elsewhere when I buy the full cans I need to paint walls, windows and trim in a 3400 sq ft building. read more

I can see why folks don't like the place. If you know exactly what you're looking for, they're just fine. Very decent selection, super conveniently located (a block from my apartment). I definitely get the feeling I'm interrupting their busy day of standing behind the counter. Sometimes. I have lived in Wallingford for the past eight years and really believe in supporting the local businesses. So when I decided to visit Tweedy and Popp I thought I would try to support them by purchasing my Christmas gifts at this store. Unfortunately, this turned into a horrifying experience. I purchased an item and unfortunately it was defective. I went to the store to return it and they said that they didn't accept returns. There were no signs or notices on my receipt to say this. I asked to talk to the manager and he bluntly stated it was corporate policy. The manager was extremely rude, hostile and indifferent to the situation. He said he was the manager for all four Ace Hardware stores. I pity their customers and their staff. Unfortunately, I won't be returning to this hardware store anymore. I am very sad that our local hardware store can't survive in this market. But I understand why they can't after my bad experience. read more

I usually like supporting local businesses. After my sole visit here, I must advocate, skipping them and just head down to a larger hardware store. Your service might not be as attentive of service but your prices will be definitely lower. You will also get in and out without dealing with the mediocre staff. read more

The only bad thing I've experienced about it is when I wanted to call to see if they had a certain item before driving over there - I called at least 5 times with no answer and no answering machine. It was quite frustrating - but when I did end up driving over there they had what I was looking for, so I survived. Between T&P and Stoneway Hardware, I haven't found a reason to go to a bigger hardware store yet - and the prices seem about the same anyhow. read more

I've shopped here a few times when I'm in a pinch and have been generally indifferent (the older gentleman can be a little gruff, as other reviews have said, but I've never had a problem with him) until this last weekend. The prices at T&P are a little higher, but the convenience more than makes up for it for me, as was the case this weekend; I was on my way to a bike race and I'd lost a bolt to my bike rack and was in a super rush. I worked with a guy behind the counter with longer black hair about my predicament and that I was in a huge rush and he came back and helped me try to find a bolt that would work. Eventually we found something that would do the job for the time being, and I bought it for like $.26, took it out to the car, and tried to install it. Too short. I raced back in to get a longer one, and the guy, knowing I was in a panic, just swapped it out and told me not to worry about the price difference and to get going. I mean, it was only like $.07, but the fact that he helped me out really made me appreciate the place--Home Depot wouldn't do that. They won me over as a fan, AND I made my race! read more

Love this place. If there is anything I can get here rather than get at Lowes or Home Depot, I will come here instead. The gentleman that helped me seemed like the owner. I don't remember his name but I do remember that he was a grandpa and instantly sympathized over my very curious 3 year old. I understand what another poster said about some employees being so apathetic. "Grandpa" seemed very eager to help me and went out of his way to try and problem solve. His employee however, looked not amused, kinda grumpy and I probably woudn't have even asked him for help. So glad Gramps helped us out. Because of that, I'll be back. They have everything. Not just that, Gramps seemed to know WAY WAY WAY more than any Fred Meyer employee working in the tools department. He also treated me with respect and patience which I can't say for Home Depot employees. And of course.....it's right next to Trophy Cupcakes. It's a neighborhood hardware store, so my assumption was "small but good staff." Turns out this was correct. We stopped in looking for a sink adapter part, asked where it was, got directed right where we needed to go and when we were sitting there trying to figure out which thing to get, another one one of the employees - Chuck - stopped in, looked at what we had, and immediately solved our problem. Turns out we were looking for an adapter we didn't need, and he showed us the solution instantly. Then we bought some lightbulbs, because we needed those. But I was really impressed with his ability to instantly recognize what we were doing wrong and fix our sink to dishwasher adapter problem! (apparently they stuff several o-rings in the adapter under the assumption you will pull them all out and only use the one you need. Who knew? Not us, and not the manual for our dishwasher.) read more
