Coming to this bakery was just so random. We were just walking around the area looking through store windows. This Spanish bakery just caught my eye and all I saw were bright colored cakes, some were made with Jello and fruit. I definitely had to go in to check this place out. There were cases lined against the wall loaded with fresh looking pastries. This place was very clean and bright. We ended up getting a couple of pastries and it was good. This was our first stop in a Queens food tour that I signed up for with my university. The Chumparrado was decent to drink on the very cold morning that we went but the breakfast pastry (the concha) that we also sampled as a group wasn't anything amazing. The drink felt a little diluted/watery and overall, wasn't sure if this was as strong of a start as the food tour could've been. The service is pretty polite though, and it seems like they have a wide array of offerings for those that are looking to celebrate quinceñeras or other birthdays. might not come again but still worth checking out at least once if you are in the area since if nothing looks good, there are plenty of street vendors sitting even just right outside of the store plaza. read more

After a delicious dinner in the area we took a walk around the neighbourhood and maybe find dessert. Tulcingo caught our eyes with it's colorful outside. There is a lot of eye candy (& cakes) to look at and to drool over. We brought a bag of samples to take home. The pastries were good but a little dry and too much breading. The place is clean and the service was friendly. There is no place to site inside this large place. It would have been nice to site and enjoy the pastries with coffee. Just grab a metal pan and tongs. Walk around the rakes of bread and pastries. Some people were just piling up the stuff! The items were good to OK. Love. Tulcingo Bakery is extremely user-friendly -- just take a tray and tongs and choose what you want from the cases. The piece de resistance is the chicarron at $10/pound. They are fatty, crispy and incredibly delicious. It is truly frightening how quickly we can go through a huge bag of chicarron! The pastries are fresh and are replenished throughout the day. There are SO many choices, it's hard to make a decision. The prices are about $1 per pastry. Also, they have cabeza de chivo on weekends! Three Kings Day is very special holiday in our household and we traveled all the way to Queens from Long Island because I heard this was the best Mexican Bakery. When we got there it had the impression of a happening spot. We bought a Rosca De Reyes (three kings day bread). This is a staple for this holiday feast. When we got home and opened the package the bread was super dry, hard and tasted like it was baked last year and they was selling us the surplus. Boy this secret hidden bakery gem just gets better and better! I was in the area for work and made the short diversion to Tulcingo Bakery. This visit I noticed some different pastries so I grabbed my tongs and tray carefully chose only four items this time, and let me tell you it was hard to resist grabbing more of varied delicious looking breads/pastries. Kudos to the baker whose deft hand really shows as most of these pastries are shockingly light despite being pretty large and very daunting looking. - The chocolate dipped elephant ear was a deliciously flaky bite with a slight sugar glaze on it that was awesome. - The Banderilla was a delicate pastry shell comprised of multiple layers of phyllo-like sheets. It was excellently flaky and had a light sugary glaze on the top shell really made it just right in terms of sweetness. - The savory bun was quite the surprise as, contrary to what I mentioned above, this was the heavy hitter of the group. Dense and savory, I could best compare this bun to an equivalent sized piece of Irish soda bread. Very tasty, and a smear of butter (no margarine please) will make you feeling happy! - Cream filled horn was very flaky and light too with a fairly rich and slightly sweet cream filling. Not bad at all. You cannot go wrong in terms of value at Tulcingo as each pastry is only $1.00, Your biggest problem will probably be curbing yourself and having the self control to not buy one of everything! read more

I was looking all over the long island/queens area for a place that sold churros. I finally found this place and I was able to order ahead. Each churro is $1. The churros were so good and they were fresh. It is in a very busy neighborhood right next to the seven train but they were fast. Only downside was the bakery need to be updated. It seemed a little outdated. However I highly recommend their churros. read more

Place doesn't close at 2 am. I went there late night hoping to catch some pastries for someone I am visiting tomorrow morning. I don't mind the place being closed but the people inside not acknowledging me when I was knocking on the window is pretty messed up. They saw me and made eye contact but didn't care. I really liked how clean this Mexican bakery is. The bakery takes up the entire corner on both sides of the street. It's huge! The cases holding the pastries or as they call it, pasteles, were huge. There was 3 gigantic cases full of pastries that I had no way to identify what pastry is what. There were no labels. I guess you are supposed to experiment which is okay because 7 pastries were just $9.25. They are all really colorful. In the back they had racks and racks of bread also. The racks were super tall. You just pull out the racks and help yourself to a bun or bread. Just get an aluminum tray with tongs first. The churro is supposed to be deep fried, fyi. I see that mexican sugar bread has a ton of sugar rolled onto it sorta like a churro. It's what they like. I can imagine having a tea or black coffee with it. The pastries are only okay in taste. I like how they look more than the taste. All the pastries are very "bready" is how I would describe it. It was just fun looking at all the different pastries and breads. read more

this is the first time i've visited a mexican bakery and they have huge selections. to start, grab a metal tray and tong and go pick your goodies. i got a churro, a flaky pastry with jam, and a banana nut muffin. they all tasted ok, not too sweet, so that's a plus! the prices were fair too, less than $4 for three items. other than pastries, they also sell some mexican groceries, cheese, eggs, etc. i found it kinda interesting actually. read more

As you walk in, you are immediately met with wonderfully fragrant Mexican breads and pastries. Have you ever had goat? The kind that falls of the bone, melts in your mouth and leaves your palate with a pleasant hint of oregano and spice? If you haven't or were wondering when you'd finally find good barbacoa in NYC, then you must absolutely come to Tulcingo. Tulcingo's barbacoa is served on Saturdays and Sundays, so plan your trip accordingly. Order one each of salsa verde and salsa roja to drizzle over the barbacoa. The salsas are very spicy and tasty, specially the salsa verde which comes with little chunks of avocado and freshly chopped cilantro. I recommend you walk a couple of blocks to buy tortillas from Tortilleria Nixtamal (www.tortillerianixtamal) to make tacos at home for a wonderful weekend treat. If it is winter, try champurrado (Mexican hot chocolate with corn dough); theirs is my favorite, a little tangy, low in sugar and milk and high on chocolate. I'm unable to resist buying myself a cup when I pass by. I do not give Tulcingo 5 stars because the quality of their bread is not consistent (they seem to lose a baker each week!) However, I do recommend their cuernitos (Mexican croissant) and chocolate pound cake. read more

I can't say I'm a fan of Mexican pastries. I find the breads too dry, almost hard and despite the numerous variations in appearance, they mostly taste the same. But if you love this type of bread, make haste to Tulcingo. Cases and cases holding all different assortments of doughnuts, pastries and breads greet you, some filled with guava, some filled with cheese, some just plain and slightly sweet. The assortment is truly astonishing, and frightening for the gluten intolerant. And lest you think the pastries are stale, fret not. On a late Saturday afternoon, the place was hustle and bustle, with customers carrying trays, on the average each sporting 8-12 breads on each tray. I wanted to follow them home to see if all they were feeding hungry alligators with all that bread. The drill is, you take a tray, grab tongs and go for it. These customers were going all out for it. And just in case Tulcingo runs out of bread, which I am sure never happens, there were racks of just baked bread off to the back. And if you wanted fried pork rinds, there was a whole display case devoted just to the stuff, with the handy tongs again. And in case you didn't grab enough carbs, the front of the store has counters filled with whole cakes and tarts. I was almost embarrassed to get only two pieces, the standard guava filled puff pastry and bread. I can't say I would make a special trip to come back for either, but if I were in the nabe, I would stop in just to oogle the varieties. read more

I always have my birthday cakes done here with a custom feature and they always come through. I mostly have my cakes with photo images of the highlights of my year and they always get me what I want. And their bread is to die for. Only the ignorant people will consider their pastries dry. They are not locals and being a local my self they have the most delicious pastries and they even put them out fresh from the oven around mid day. I highly recommend this spot and hope you have a wonderful experience but now some of the employees left and now they have these ignorant people working over there read more
