Very unique spot and experience. This place offers two things: mini open faced sammiches and ice cold beer. Both of which hit the spot. You walk through a chipotle style line and pick out all the grub you want. Then you can buy beers when you make it to the cashier. It can be overwhelming to a tourist like me, but you quickly assimilate. Very quaint and busy spot, so be prepared to join some random people at whatever table has room. But this is commonplace in Europe. Solid and reasonable prices, def stop by when you're in Vienna! read more

Oh gosh I thought this place was weee-eird. :D But I'm all aboard the 4-star train. You gotta go here and get the little sandwiches from the crammed little shop with people crowding around like these are sandwiches of the gods. I don't get it but they made me smile. I just don't know why they are so popular! They didn't strike me as fantastically delicious! Nor did I find Vienna expensive so that I was in need of a cheap little option. It was fun! I like egg. This place was a pit stop after all the touristy things we did in the city. 100 year old sandwich place? It's a must-go! We were a group of hungry tourists with big appetites so we got to try almost all of the sandwiches, (maybe this wasn't the place for us at that time, now that I think about it haha). A very interesting place to visit for tourists. The original Trześniewski was a chef from Poland who invented this very small (2 bites?), cute and elegant open sandwich with a huge variety of meat, fish and other goodies. And the little sandwiches are supposed to go along with equally small glasses of beer. They call these "unspeakably good sandwiches", because the founder's name is so difficult to say in Germany or perhaps in English too. read more

Cool nook, Rick Steves' recomendation. Next to the high-end Graben Strasse, it was great to find an affordable snack and had a locals' validation to it... The open top sandwiches were ok in my opinion and the small beer is more like shot, but learning about the history and finding a unique place like this is what traveling is all about! read more

great place to grab a quick, affordable lunch while walking around the innenstadt! i had four with a mini bottle of prosecco for €10 - can't beat the price! fyi some of the canapés were better than others so take a minute or two to study the menu bc the line moves fast. the egg, tuna and bacon were all great. read more

It was ok. Considering that a lot of guide books and Tripadvisor heap high praise for this place, I think they are a overhyped. The food is basically a bunch of small open face sandwiches. While they may be fun for a quick picture to share with others, I wouldn't say the food tasted good. Cold sandwiches where the bread was soggy and the topping was also cold and bland. I guess my American taste buds just couldn't grasp why the sandwiches are so popular there. Very small place with limited seating. Get there early, or you will need to take it to some benches on Graben street to eat. The staff seemed to speak a little English. They do take credit cards, which is nice. I wouldn't go out of your way, which I did, to find this place. read more

Sometimes I stop by here if I need something really, really tiny to eat... something to just put me through for an hour until i get a proper meal. I often think there should be more offer for such tiny bites on the go in Vienna. But there isn't, and I rarely need the whole sandwich from the bakery. So I have one of these, or two at most. They are gone before you can grasp what you have just paid for the cute little thing. Cute, I would say only when you see them all lying there next to each other. When you pick out one, you realize that the Aufstrich is almost below average, and even the bread can taste of much more happiness in Vienna. So, this fame is really not well grounded. The shop in the 1st Bezirk looks just lovely, no doubt, but the product is unfortunately the same as in all others, and I haven`t got to meet a staff member with a good attitude yet. read more

Great place just steps from St. Stephen's. Small delicious sandwichs all on black bread. From egg spread with truffle to herring with onion. Well over twenty choices. Limited seating, mostly take away. Order a big selection and go people watch. They open at 830 and it was my breakfast twice. The horseradish one is another favorite. I hardly can say that I have eaten ONE single bread there I would like. The prices are really high and the tast is disgusting. I am really sorry, but I cant understand why people still go there - the basic concept with small bread with a "pfiff oder sekt" is pretty cool, but i definitely know places where the quality of the bread and its Aufstrich is far better. read more

We stopped in when it was super busy. Quick glance at the english menu, then you get in line and blindly order delicious little open sandwiches via pointing at them to the kind woman with the spatula. Just order, eat it. Yummy sandwiches! Perfect for a light, inexpensive lunch - or even an afternoon snack. Seating is limited and thus a challenge around lunchtime, but they have a quick turnover for Europe. Fast service. Very inexpensive (1.2 Euro per small open faced sandwich -- about three pieces is is equivalent to on piece of bread from a full sized loaf). But the food is only okay, not great. This place is really nice - but over hyped. You come into a grayish neat styled place, and see people waiting in line for tiny overpriced sandwiches. This is a bit absurd. These sandwiches can be made at home easily, and you would also have a larger variety. It is expensive here if you come in hungry. Each sandwich costs 1 EURO, and you need about 6 to fill yourself. There is a large variety of sandwiches, I enjoyed the mushroom most. I didn't like the tomato - it was too sour, and the paprika was too spicy and mushy. There are a few place to sit, and stand up tables to eat while standing up. Tourists traveling without children should want to experience this place. read more

One of my fondest memories of Wien and a favorite haunt. How can I forget coming here and picking out several canape sandwiches and washing them down with a couple of Pfifs (1 deciliter flutes of draft beer). What a selection; as you come into the 100 year old restaurant, with stand up tables in the main display room, you see a seemingly endless variety. The choice only ends when your belly is full. You point out your selections, the server hands them to you on a plate, you take your beer from the barman and walk over to one of the stand ups and spend the next minutes in heaven. Although everyone has trouble pronouncing the name of this chain restaurant it is worth a visit. They serve all kinds of spreads, spicy or not, vegetarian or with meat or fish. The idea is to select three or four different types of spreads and you get about an inch by 2 inch big pieces of bread. All combinations allowed. Maybe not cheap but always fresh! read more

I came here on a visit to Vienna and thought it was absolutely great! The atmosphere is very unique and the place was packed with locals. While I came for the local atmosphere, the food was also fantastic! My friend and I went up to the counter for seconds because the sandwiches were so good and there were so many that we wanted to try. Found our way here based on Rick Steves' recommendation - glad we did! This place is unique, for sure. The "restaurant" is tiny; the "cafeteria line" is miniature as well, and about chest-height for me. The menu is definitely restrained - little more than some desserts we never saw, and the wide, nearly overwhelming variety of tiny, open-faced sandwiches! My husband and I chose three each, and had that similarly tiny, too-cute 0.2 liter (6.76 ounces) "Piff" of beer, and that was really enough for a light lunch - and could hardly keep from laughing about what we were eating; it seemed like food for a doll. Plus, we were lucky - found an open table and two chairsby the window so no need to juggle. And our luck continued even after we left Trzesniewski: we turned right out of the restaurant and onto the wider street, Graben, where, on the opposite side, off to the right, there was a window-front gelato store lined with customers. Given the petite lunch we'd just enjoyed, we felt justified to enjoy an indulgent (three scoop!) dessert. read more
