This is a must try place even with 3 stars. I would give it five if it were only for the history, decor, and concept. But the food is only okay, even if the experience is great, and very Viennese This is essentially a sandwich shop, begun by a Polish cook in 1901. It is elegant in a late 19th century way... with marble top tables and high ceilings. However most people stand to eat their lunch here... so it is more of a snack shop or a local experience to have rather than being counted as one of your real meals while in the city. The offerings are limited but fun. There is a refrigerated glass in which lay about 17 types of sandwich, all open faced, all on about a third of a slice or bread, and all based on a tasty although salty egg salad. Everything else lays on top of this, and there are lots of toppings to choose from. My favorites are the liver, the Swedish herring, the mushroom, marinated cucumber. And one does not fill you up so expect to get at least four if not eight, so you can try all the types you want. Think of it as a late 19th century Hapsburg Empire version of White Castle sliders. They offer a small narrow glass of beer with your lunch, but like the slider/sandwiches, you may want about six. Beware of the crab egg sandwich... its fishy. And unless you know and love Mat)es Herring, beware of that too because it is extra salty (as is most food in Vienna). Sandwiches will set you back about $2.40 each. But the best thing is... when you are done, you walk out full (albeit a little puffy from the salt), and you are in the center of Vienna, only yards from Stephansplatz, and Stephansdom. Trzesniewski is a casual counter-service shop that offers a wide range of open-faced sandwiches that each contain varieties of cold mayo-based "salads" (typically egg salads) along with other toppings (onion, varieties of fish, or more egg). We picked out a small selection, and my favorites were definitely the fish toppings, which were nicely salty and the perfect complement to the egg salads, which were cooling and slightly sour from the chopped pickles. The brown bread on which the sandwiches are built was nice and chewy, forming a perfect foundation for the creamy spreads. Really cool open faced fast food sandwich joint. When my wife and I went it was really packed. This isn't a big place, there are a few tables in the back and tall tables outside you can stand and eat. Though it was packed the line moved fast. There is an English menu at the beginning of the line but it's pretty difficult to use because you can't carry it with you. When it got to our turn, I literally just pointed and held up the number I wanted on my fingers and then nodded. The lady kinda spoke English, but pointing and nodding worked perfectly fine. I actually don't know what I ordered haha. The line was moving so fast that I kinda impulse chose random items. I ended up with 7 small sandwiches, that cost a total of 8.40€! I would recommend at least getting 4 sandwiches for each person. I could have eaten a few more since I was splitting with my wife. It was a really cool place! I would definitely recommend it. They take credit cards, but I think they prefer cash because it's quicker. I kinda hold up the line when I used my card. read more

What a fun place this is. They have many many varieties of small open faced sandwiches. Also beer comes anywhere from a wee tiny beer to hearty mug. My husband was amused by the tiny beer I ordered him not realizing what size I had ordered. Oops. Our sandwiches were great in particular the liver sandwiches which is a house specialty. This was recommended to us by a friend who lived nearby when he was a child in Vienna and he spent his pocket money here when he was a boy in the 1930s. How could someone skip something that was part of such a nostalgic story? We got our sandwiches to carry out so they put them in a cute box tied with a string. The sandwiches were good though I think it would take several trips to sample them all and decide which is best. We got 6 sandwiches for 2 people but added other things to our meal. It is also right in the center of the city and very easy to get to. I found the facade to be very uninviting as the glass exterior doesn't allow you to look in. However, once you get through the door, the broad array of finger sandwiches on display is a sharp contrast. We ordered eight finger sandwiches with a variety of spreads including mushroom, egg, carrot, poultry liver (our favourite) and other (literally) colourful and tasty choices. To give a sense of size, I think it would take about three finger sandwiches to equal one slice of bread. I was a little surprised when a group of six guys came in for small beers. I think it's safe to say that this place definitively serves "Little Girl Food", but it was something my wife wanted to check out and as the saying goes: "Happy wife, happy life". This is a really fun place away from a lot of the havoc of the surrounding streets! When you walk in, you are faced with a choice of over ten (I would say?) different varieties of open faced finger sandwiches for EUR 1,30 each. I got three for myself, which was a perfect portion for a small lunch! I got one with chicken pate and beets, one with egg salad mixed with pickles, and tried another with red peppers and mushed peas. They were all adorable looking and good tasting. Not a ton of seasoning on any of them but the red pepper one was my favorite because it had a nice spice to it! In the restaurant there were a few tables to sit at, and also a few tables that were standing height. Trzesniewski also has wifi! read more

What a funny place, what a funny idea. Its basically an egg salad sandwich in about 30 different weird and wacky flavors. The ladies serving are decked out in these out dated yellow outfits, its a dark room, with rows and rows of open sandwiches gleaming in the gloom. The sandwiches are tasty. I like the more conventional flavors. But what I really like is how original and wonderful this place is! I always visit when I am in Vienna. read more

This little sandwich shop is conveniently hidden from the busy Vienna streets. Trzesniewski has been in Vienna since 1902 and the quaint​ atmosphere definitely​ shows the long history of this establishment. There is usually a long queue at the counter and the Viennese do not like indecisive people so better check the menu before you go there. All the little open-faced sandwiches are delicious however my favorites were the bacon and egg; and sardines. Lots of veggie options as well. Stopped by here during a 2 day stay in Vienna. It was located right by the main downtown district of Vienna, so really convenient for any tourists! Went with two friends and we shared 6 of these photogenic sandwiches together as sort of a pre dinner snack. In terms of taste, there were nearly 20 different flavors and combinations. My friends and I differed on which ones were the best, but the good thing about this place was the incredible array of flavors, so you can try a lot of different types. The prices were also really cheap, at least from an American tourist point of view - we paid only a couple of euros each. Be warned, however, there's not much room to eat. read more

The line through the place moves past the case and you point to what you want. Best to be ready with your selections so you don't hold up the line. If you can find this place, it's VERY good. I loved coming here, because it was memorable, unique, and high quality. These make a great snack, or if you're willing to essentially build your own medley of sandwiches, you can make a meal of it. It might be a little nerve wracking to order because there's no menu and you stand in a line and can't really see what's available until you're being served. I don't remember there being any signage. Most people in the shop seemed to be locals who didn't need to ask what all the sandwiches were. We did ask and the servers were very friendly and patient. There's tables to stand around and eat at, the turnover is very quick. I would definitely recommend this as a stop. Came here twice and wish I could eat here again! read more

Buffet Trzesniewski is an institution, known for absolutely delicious open-faced mini-sandwiches, Brötchenin, in an elegant decor. My favorites are chicken liver (Geflügelleber) tuna with eggs (Thunfisch mit Ei), and the very best - cucumber with egg (Gurken mit Ei). The cucumber is marinated in vinegar. Service is efficient and polite enough. Get your sandwiches, tap water, or beer, and stand at the marble counters with locals. Great place to meet people and to chat. Toilet is downstairs and super-clean, but it's a cabinet of cigarette smoke. I mean, full of smoke. The restaurant is smoke-free. Four sandwiches (1.10 each) had me full, but I saw guys munching up 8 or 9 of these! Polish cook Franciszek Trześniewski opened this restaurant-bar in 1902. How exciting to discover Yelp Austria. I have some great memories are from my time living in the beautiful city of Vienna and the great sights, events and tastes I enjoyed here. Trzesniewski is one of them, a sandwich stop in the Inner City, or 1st District, established over 100 years ago. A fantastic assortment of canape type open faced sandwiches (broetchen, as they call them, little breads) greet your overwhelmed eyes - so hard to decide. But they are small, 5 being the minimum to feel full, so choose away from the 20 + assortment in front of you. (great pix by Yelpers give you the idea) Order a "pfiff" of bier (a tall very narrow flute shaped glass holding only 1.5 deciliter of beer - size and style created here!) and go to one of the many standing tables and feast. Simply a must do can't miss it experience in Vienna. I see on their website they have expanded to other locations - good for them - but if I were you I'd go here. It's located in the epicentre of one of the great European cities, so when you walk out the door, you have the city at your feet; literally. read more

Sooner or later, I was bound to write a review on the famous sandwich establishment Trzesniewski in Vienna. Though I rarely go myself, when I'm showing people around Vienna they often want to stop here for a bite to eat as they have read about it on the internet or in a guidebook. I have no problem, with that and always choose the original Trzesniewski in the Dorotheergasse in the inner city as it has the most atmosphere. Part of the fun is teaching people how to properly pronounce the Polish name. The open-faced sandwiches (Brötchen) are good enough but in my opinion not spectacular. My favorite is the crab and egg sandwich followed by the matjes and gervais sandwiches with onions. The costs can add up because the size is small so you might need several to make a lunch. They are actually better for a midday snack. But I do love the Pfiff (0.2 litre) of beer you can order at Trzesniewski. It's the perfect size for a noontime libation! ..... And don't forget - they sell Schwedenbomben here which make for a tasty dessert..... read more

This is truly the deliciousest. I love little finger foods, and this *kinda* makes me feel like I'm at a cocktail party. One where the host loves egg and smoked fish. So you walk in, push back the heavy curtain (it's February; it's a good measure for warmth) and there's a bar with a glass case and all of these perfect tiny sandwiches laid out. All on the same dark, dense bread, these are sandwiches with mixtures of herring, onion, paprika, egg, and something pickle-y (helpful, I know). Each is 1.20 Euro. Apparently there's a list in English of what they all are (their website is currently down), but I just asked "English?" and a guy was summoned from the back and I said "3 please - your recommendations!". So I'm not really sure what I got. Eggy fishy WIN, is what. Easy peezy, right off the square and central shopping so pop in there, give things a taste, and be on your way again. Due to location one could assume it would be touristy, but by the German speaking fur coats my bet is: tons of Austrians think this place is tops, too. There is something quintessentially Viennese about this place, from the tall tables where you stand, sometimes sharing with a fellow snacker, to the view out the windows of the building across the narrow street, to the head-bonking, spiral stairway that leads to the toilet. Thank you fellow Yelpers, for putting this little shop on the map! The restaurant is located in a small side street, and there is no way I would have stumbled upon it without Yelp. Topless sandwiches are interesting. They reminds me somewhat of the montaditos (Catalan tapas) in Spain, in terms of the topless design and the variety of favors put onto the bread. But where as montaditos use solid ingredients, here everything is whipped into a cream before being placed onto the bread. At ~1 euro per mini sandwich, this restaurant is one of the best deals around. read more

I really have never understood what people like about this crowded, stressful, little stand-up lunch place. Over the years I have been here many times because others wanted to come here. Unfortunately, I had to eat here recently yet again when friends insisted this was where we were going. What is so attractive about different types of mush on top of whole wheat bread? Attention vegetarians! We had several options here as vegetarians. (However, vegans would not have any options!) PERFECT afternoon snack and respite from walking around. It is small and local. They don't speak English, but if you ask if they do in German then they will point to a menu in English on the counter. It wasn't crowded when we went in (4pm on a Saturday) so I guess the crowds ebb and flow. They only serve 1 type of beer - a tasty Pilsner (not anything like American Pilsner!). The beer listed on the menu is only sizes - small (1/8 liter), medium (.3L) or large (.5L) You pay for your sandwiches and beer at the register and then they give you tokens for the beer, which you just walk to the other end of the counter (where the taps are) and give to the bartender. read more

There's something extremely eclectic about this place. The sandwiches don't look like much, and they're all bite sized, but once you get a plate of them to share, they're incredible. Delicious little pieces of nice and hefty wholewheat bread, spread with some very nice choices of toppings. I tried the Gurke-Ei (pickle and egg) and the cream and onion one and was pleasantly surprised. For those who have tried the original Flammkuchen, this cream one tastes a lot like it, only cold. I was taken there by a family who knows Vienna well and the place was very subtle and unassuming at first. Couldn't have guessed what it was without seeing the inside and trying it. More standing than sitting places but it's worth a stop. 1,2€ per piece is not ideal, but you could have a fast food burger for 2,2€ and not this traditional experience, which is priceless. Inventive alternative to a snack bar or a fast food chain! P.S. The glasses are incredible cute and tiny to match the buffet products. read more

I don't understand all the hype about this place! They sell little open-faced sandwiches for €1.30 each, and I had 5 of them, but easily could have eaten 3-4 more. Very cramped ship, with really only standing room to eat. Not good for groups! I recommend the sandwiches with fish toppings, which are nice and savory. The vege or egg based sandwiches were very mild and unremarkable. This place is probably highly rated only because the cute little sandwiches are Instagram friendly. read more

Topless sandwiches...have to love that. What an experience here! Came during lunch rush hour and had to point to the sandwiches even though I did not know what I was getting. After a long morning of walking around Vienna, I turned down a smaller alley and found this little shop. The sandwiches are all pre-made and behind a glass display much like a cake shop. The key here is cheap sandwiches at €1.2 per open faced sandwich. There are lots of varieties of topping combinations and flavors. The cheaper price means you can try many different sandwiches for only a few euros. I bought four sandwiches for less than €5 and I was relatively satisfied. If I wanted to be very full, I could have easily ordered a few more sandwiches. The restaurant itself does not have a lot of seating and more than a few people stood around small tables right outside the store. read more
