Cute chain selling small 1.20 euro open face sandwiches! There were so many different flavors but I got the egg on egg, as recommended by the worker there. Love the concept but mine was a little bland.

Buffet Trzesniewski has been serving its little open faced sandwiches in Vienna since 1904. 18 of the 25 varieties are unchanged since the restaurant opened in 1904. That's what you're walking into when you visit Trzesniewski for a meal - living (and tasty) history. I visited a few weeks ago when a friend and I were visiting Vienna for a few days. You walk in and walk down the line, pointing out the sandwiches you'd like. It's as simple and as fast as that. If you like a quick, affordable, and tasty lunch during a day of touristing, Trzesniewski might be the perfect spot for lunch (especially as it's so central to the areas of Vienna where tourists are likely to spend their time). I chose four: tomato (vegan), herring with onions, tuna with egg, and another I can't remember! They were all delicious - simple, traditional, and no frills - but delicious. And we were in and out of our lunch in less than 15 minutes. A great meal on a day when you want to save every minute of the day to explore Vienna. Between how delicious it was and the history of the Trzesniewski, I couldn't have enjoyed our lunch more.

This was an awesome place to get a snack or a quick meal. They could not have made it easier for the customers. They had postcards with all the different toppings for their open-face sandwiches, including allergens information. Each little open-faced sandwich was €1.80; it didn't matter which one you chose. My favorites were the truffle egg and ham, peas and carrots, crab, and beef with horseradish and cucumber. There were a few small tables, but a good number of people just stood around with their plates. The best part was taking home the postcard as a souvenir and reminder of all the deliciousness here.

This spot is a gem--packed with locals and a perfect way to dive into authentic Austrian food culture. My partner and I stopped by for a light lunch while exploring, and it delivered. We tried: (in order of preference) Black Truffle, Egg, and Ham - Rich and savory, with the truffle adding a nice twist. Onion-Pickled Herring - Tangy and bold, a standout for fish lovers. Smoked Salmon with Cream Cheese and Horseradish - Creamy and zesty, a classic done well. Beef with Horseradish and Pickles - Hearty and flavorful, with a good crunch from the pickles. Tip: The bread is cold and untoasted--firm but pairs great with the interesting, flavorful toppings. It's a unique, light lunch option while strolling around! This place feels like a local favorite and a solid pick for tourists. The unique flavors made it an overall great experience--I'd stop by again.

Best place to enjoy a bite while in Vienna, Austria. Service was amazing- Ambiance of Trzesniewski was calm- but it can get very business at lunch, it's a very small place- there's only counter service! My favorite place for a quick bite!

First meal in Austria. Very special sandwich. A lot of options to choose from. Ones I had were on the salty side.

Just couldn't imagine liking this place, however these little finger sandwiches are great. We arrived and there was a small line out the door. There were a few Stand up tables outside and they were all occupied. Inside there was seating for about 12 to 14 people. I stood in line while my spouse sat at a small table for two. The line moves swiftly. Most of the orders are for take out. The ladies playing your little sandwiches are quite efficient and friendly. We pick out three types: Pfefferoni Scharf (hot green peppers); Pikantes Ei (egg with horseradish); and Wilder Papkika Suss-Scharf (Peppadew Sweet and Hot). WOW, what tastes. They were wonderful, tasty and perfect. The displays of little sandwiches was mesmerizing. Highly recommend. The wait is worth it. One of the least expensive lunches in Europe and very, very good. Each little sandwich is $1.7 EUR.

We came here for a quick snack. They have the cutest sized beers available. Tiny and is literally the size of your hand. We also ordered 4 of the sandwiches. The ones with egg were really nice. The other ones were all mysteries as we weren't sure what we were ordering. This is a great cheap and fast snack. The people leave really fast so you are bound to find a spot.

    Open face sandwiches

Unique little lunch place, walking distance from St Stephen's Cathedral. Large variety of open face sandwiches with options ranging from herring to lentils and beets. The crab paste and smoked salmon were our favorites. There are cards with pictures of the sandwiches and descriptions in German and English which made ordering easier. Sandwiches are priced individually at 1.80 each or in sets of 5 and 10. Place gets really crowded as they don't have too many tables inside. Recommend it to anyone looking to try something new on a trip!

Heard so much about Buffet Trzesniewski and, having missed it on my previous visits to Vienna, I absolutely had to stop by this time around. What a treat. The little open sandwiches on rye bread were finger-lickingly delicious. This place is perfect for a quick bite in between sight-seeing. The menu (in an ingenious postcard format) has many options both for carnivores and pescatarians/vegetarians. If you feel adventurous, take your plates to one of the small tables inside and get the full experience, enjoy your meal elbow to elbow with other guests. Otherwise - weather permitting - you can opt for the high top tables outside and this way avoid the crowds that fill the space around the lunch hour. Either way, it is worth a stop.

    Buffet Trzesniewski Dorotheergasse 3/17/22

Continuing a tradition begun in Poland it is from Buffet Trzesniewski that the Viennese have sought Sandwiches since 1902, the location on Dorotheergasse open daily from mid-morning to dinner with over two-dozen toppings offered on small rectangles of Rye Bread. Created by Franciszek Trzesniewski of Kraków, his goal of quality and convenience carried on today, it is once inside the iconic space that decisions abound, a "Pfiff" of Beer ordered by most to accompany two bites of Carrot with Cream Cheese or Pureed Mushrooms depending on one's tastes. €1.50 each, often-times with Eggs and stripes of Liver or Fish, Beets come liberally tinged with Horseradish while Cucumbers are mixed with pickling spices that are poignant but not to be confused with Relish.

I took a page out of the Rick Steves playbook and tried Trzesniewki. The helpful. Printed menu cards made it easy to tell the sttendant which I wanted. I tried the lentil with beetroot (Yun!) red pepper and cream cheese and the smoked salmon with cream cheese and horseradish! (Loved!!!). The dark dense bread they are served on was really good! As luck would have it, I was at the Vienna train station all day the next day and got to go again! Next time one of the cucumber/carrot varietals!

Egg with egg, hot peppers, carrot, and smoked salmon

Tiny place with a few places to sit and stand. It was very busy with a line out the door, but the line moved quick. Little sandwiches were fantastic.

We only tried their breakfast, but the prepared goods looked delicious as well. They don't have English menus, but much of the staff speaks English so there are no problems there. I had the Landstrasser and the boyfriend had the Prince Harry's Favorite. Landstrasser: this came with a variety of things: different breads, one of them was a lavender rye bread really delicious apricot jam honey butter soft boiled egg rye "soldiers" to dip in the egg cottage cheese with the most delicious olive oil and pesto carrot/radish/cucumbers to dip in the cottage cheese homemade potato chips Prince Harry: A mini pastrami sandwich on a kaiser roll steak tartare a savory french toast with green beans marinated tomatoes EVERYTHING WAS GREAT. My favorite was the apricot jam spread on anything, but truly all the ingredients were spectacular and prepared with great care. The boyfriend kept raving about the pastrami for hours after our meal. And it was incredible. I've never tasted anything quite like it in a really good way. The meat was nicely spiced and had a very smoky taste. We're only in Vienna for a few days, but I think we'll stop for another visit! EDIT: We definitely did stop in for another visit and it was equally delicious as the first. I tried a green smoothie this time, which was fantastic. Also, the croque madame sandwich. The croissant was perfection and it was really filling, but not overly heavy. A perfect meal in Vienna!
