This place was so much fun! I've never been anywhere like it. On a side street, it was very busy at noon. People standing to eat, sharing tables.... We lucked out and got a tiny table of our own. This was an awesome place to get a snack or a quick meal. They could not have made it easier for the customers. They had postcards with all the different toppings for their open-face sandwiches, including allergens information. Each little open-faced sandwich was €1.80; it didn't matter which one you chose. Just couldn't imagine liking this place, however these little finger sandwiches are great. We arrived and there was a small line out the door. There were a few Stand up tables outside and they were all occupied. Inside there was seating for about 12 to 14 people. I stood in line while my spouse sat at a small table for two. The line moves swiftly. Most of the orders are for take out. The ladies playing your little sandwiches are quite efficient and friendly. We pick out three types: Pfefferoni Scharf (hot green peppers); Pikantes Ei (egg with horseradish); and Wilder Papkika Suss-Scharf (Peppadew Sweet and Hot). WOW, what tastes. They were wonderful, tasty and perfect. The displays of little sandwiches was mesmerizing. Highly recommend. The wait is worth it. One of the least expensive lunches in Europe and very, very good. I took a page out of the Rick Steves playbook and tried Trzesniewki. The helpful. Printed menu cards made it easy to tell the sttendant which I wanted. I tried the lentil with beetroot (Yun!) red pepper and cream cheese and the smoked salmon with cream cheese and horseradish! (Loved!!!). The dark dense bread they are served on was really good! The miniature sandwich phenomena is something I'd seen around town and this was my first interaction with it. First off, these sandwiches are tasty. I was impressed and usually I find sandwiches some of the most unimpressive food on the market. Not to say I don't like them, but they are basic and certainly not cutting edge eats. The fact these sandwiches are time and open faced means you can try a lot of different flavors and get a good meat/topping to bread ratio. I thought they were really good and even though I only had 4 total, they were more satisfying than expected. Don't be mistaken though, if you want a filling meal you'll need to order 6-10 of these bad boys. This stop is quick and great if you are walking around Stephansplatz and need a quick snack. Came here for a quick casual lunch as it was within walking distance from my hotel and was recommended by Rick Steves. It's not too hard to find with a huge sign on a side of a building. Outside, there are a few high tables which you can place your plate and eat while standing. Inside, you follow the line, point to what you want and pay at the end. If you're a tourist, please decide what you want beforehand. In general, Austrians, like Germans love efficiency and don't like people who can't make up their minds and hold up the line. I found that the employees there were very friendly though. My favorite finger sandwich has to be the 'speck mit ei' or bacon with eggs. I tried the herring with onions too but didn't like that as much. The cauliflower one with mustard was decent as well. (please don't nick them...) The place has been going strong for over a hundred years. The spreads are unusual and unique. Classics include bacon with egg or matjes pickled fish with onion.
