Excellent little bakery right in the middle of Vienna's 1st district. I am a big fan of their pastries, which are top notch. I would especially recommend Mohn and Nusskipferl (pastry stuffed with poppy seeds or walnut) are sweet, soft and melt in your mouth. Overall, likely the best pastries in the city and beyond. As far as their bread is concerned, if you like rye breads, it is top quality. I prefer the buns over their breads - rolls, crescents, etc. The only breads that I wouldn't recommend are the ones with non-Austrian names - particularly baguettes and ciabattas. I am on a mission to find a half-way decent baguette in Vienna and I still am unsuccessful. Joseph Brot is no exception, baguettes and ciabattas are that in name only and same goes for croissants. The point is - stick to what Austrians do well - Austrian pastries, rolls and rye breads.

We waited in the takeout line for about 15 minutes and ate the best Kaiserschmarrn ever! Something I didn't even know existed until visiting Vienna. Highly recommend checking out this spot!

We were directed to go upstairs and found an open seat in no time at all. Just passing by all the display cases filled with desserts and pastries triggered the cravings. We did a quick menu perusal but really knew that we wanted to try the kaiserschmarrn which was a traditional Austrian dessert made up torn up pancakes, served with a plum compote and dusted with powdered sugar. It was light, had a nice caramelized flavor from browning in the pan and little pops of more sweetness from the raisins. It was so delicious that we came back the next day for more but shortcut the line and got it to go from the takeaway window. Same kaiserschmarrn but around 3 Euros cheaper for a larger serving. After eating we wanted around the restaurant and towards the back you can see just how the cooks juggled making many pans of Kaiserschmarrn at the same time. Yes it's a bit pricey but so tasty to try at least once.

Mostly a take-away operation across 70+ stores, the promise of fresh bakes and a lack of leavening agents part of the business since day one, it is upon entry that one will notice an abundance of options including several organic choices displayed across racks and cases. Low-priced compared to more artisan competitors, many Pastries available under €2, Ströck's Baguette is predicably less intricate than what one might find at Josef or Öfferl, the addition of Pork and Cheese making up some ground while an Almond Croissant was unfortunately build on Frangipane and immediately flaccid. Much improved in the Marmelcroissant with Apricot Jam, though Pastry layers are still poorly separated, look to the Birnen Tarte Bourdaloue for something classic and delicious as cooked Apples settle into a delicate base with Sugar and Nuts.

Also the women working at this location could have been nicer. Strock is huge chain yet they were scolding a tourist for taking pictures of the display case even though she had ordered already. This place is not an award winning independent bakery by any means.
