Historically the Royal Bavarian Court Supplier and Royal Court Confectioner KuK Hofzuckerbäcker L. Heiner dates back to roughly 1840 when Andreas Rabl took over a pre-existing Bakery, the eventual naming after grandson-in-law Ludwig Heiner occurring in 1883 and expansion since occurring into the sixth generation with six storefronts. Best known for its space on Kaerntner Strasse, home to several Cakes and Confections offered beginning at 08h30, guests are invited to dine-in or order take-out, Heiner's Topfentorte amongst the Café's most recognized creations thanks to delicate Quark Mousse between Sponge Layers and a bit of Gelatin. Happy to order Espresso with everything, the double-shot made from well-sourced Beans is best sipped black, additional Cakes include Hungary's Esterhazy, named after a former diplomat to Austria featuring Fondant, Apricot Jam and an Almond Meringue far better than that at Aida. Not about to omit Sacher Torte, in this case a cubed "Sacherwurfel" nearly the width of its Chocolate medallion, both taste and texture are similar to that of Café Sacher's original version though the shell on all sides expectedly tilts this rendition a bit further towards Cocoa. read more

This is a lovely cafe. Thoroughly recommend it. There's plenty of space to sit and the atmosphere is great. It feels very local. The staff are nice and the selection of cakes and other food is great. Recommend the house special of apricot dumplings! I went a few times before and would definitely return. read more

Just walk around the shopping street after long break suddenly my GF was turning into this store actually she was attracted by the fancy cakes which exhibits in show-window lol stepped to second floor finding one available seat just sited down ,friendly waiter smiling soak in classical atmosphere just just lack a little bit homologous music further this enjoyeable feeling in all , nice place even though many tourist s visited here ,as such it is worth sitting here and tasting ! read more

As you pass Ludwig Heiner from the outside of the buzzing Vienna's shopping vein that it lies on, it seems like one of the many local quite busy and cramped coffeehouses. Only when you walk up to the first floor will you then discover the gem that it is - there are multiple salons with plenty of space, comfortable couch seating (unlike at the ground floor with just a few tables) and pleasantly relaxed atmosphere. The cozy interiors with small antique touches really help finish the impression of having been transformed not just away from the main shopping buzz, but also perhaps a few decades back in time. If you are set on sitting down for a nice coffee and cake/savory snack (I haven't tried anything savory, but there seems to be a decent menu), there is no need to linger on the ground floor counter presumably used more for take-aways/quick bites - just walk right up, as there is a separate kitchen and sweets counter with exactly the same cakes (and then some wider selection) upstairs. The service is exactly how it should be: quick, polite, and pleasant to deal with. Their traditional Austrian dresses are a nice extra touch. As for my experience with food: we tried the traditional sacher cake, which was very good. I recommend going for the full-caloric bomb and having it with whipped cream, as the whipped cream prepared here was delicious and complimented the cake really well. The prices are quite reasonable for the city center (around 3.5 Euro for a cake and 5 for a pot of tea). As a tea lover I liked that you could order either just a cup, or an entire teapot of tea. Despite being quite full, this was not one of these unpleasant coffeehouses where the staff keeps waiting for you to leave your place the moment you finish eating or drinking. If I lived in Vienna, I could imagine using this as a little oasis of quiet in the center and coming here to sip away my tea above a book, or while watching the street below. Altogether, one of the most pleasant times I've had in Vienna, and thus a five-star find. read more

Holy moly. Stunning marzipan kartoffel pastry which was super-dense and blended chocolate and almond flavors as well as any I've had. Amazeballs mocha krapfen with different kinds of butter and coffee creams and a caramel glaze that was sweeter than sugar. And when your tongue gets too tired, there's a coffee which is rich like chocolate but not at all bitter. Just yum. read more

Went here based on the reviews from Tripadvisor and Yelp. Their sachertorte was less dry than at Oberlaa, more fruity than Hawelka, less dense than Cafe Central, and fresher than Cafe Sacher. It's got chocolate in it, but all you could taste was apricot so some people might be disappointed. Also got the apple strudel in vanilla sauce. It's not excessively sweet and overpowering, but added some moisture. Tasted refreshing! Husband had a white wine because it's the cheapest thing on the menu. I had the cappuccino with whipped cream. Their whipped cream is nice and thick, but not very sweet which seems to be how people in Vienna seem to roll. You can pay here by credit card, but the waitress will have you follow her downstairs to process it. I don't think they take the card and process it alone like in the States, just to show they're not stealing your card info perhaps? I'm not sure what's the proper way to do seating here. We went upstairs, grabbed the nearest table, and picked up the menus ourselves by the pastry bar. That was probably really rude etiquette, as I saw the waitress hand others their menu and quickly glance over at us (she didn't say anything so the people here are nice and not stuck up at all). read more

I was on a mission during my recent trip to Vienna to sample as many coffee shops/bake shops as I could. I can say that all the coffee was good, but this place was hands down the best bakery. It's located along the pedestrian only street connecting St. Stephans and the State Opera. The only drawback was no sidewalk tables. No problem! The ground floor entrance doesn't look like much, a small counter and a few tables. Head upstairs to the more roomy second floor seating area. I had an apricot pastry called a "Pruder". Sort of like a cinnamon role but not as sweet. It was so delicious that it has set the standard higher for any pastry I may have in the future. It was transcendingly wonderful, as only a pastry can be. I'm ready to come back, just for the Pruder. read more

I was keen to try Heiner since it didn't seem to be the rather traditionally stiff Viennese coffeehouse, and, of course, specializes in sweets, and cakes. Lo and behold! They offer exactly what I've been looking for: Dobostorte! It's decided, I should spend my last 10 euros at Heiner. The room upstairs is lovely, spacious but still cozy. The seats are padded velvet, and they must have been for a long long time, judging by the various shades of pastel they now sport. They compliment the flower wallpaper and the soft lighting. My expectations were gently crushed when the waitress brought a different cake! Dobostorte only available on Saturdays folks! I chose a Mohntorte, not knowing what it was (poppy!) and it was lovely. My melange was strong and hot enough, and served in the cutest tea service. Since I had some pennies left, I decided to try yet something else (to the vast suprise of the waitress) and ordered an Estherhazytorte. Don't be fooled into thinking it's a mille-feuilles spinoff, it's not, it's a thousand times sweeter. My guide book had warned me! The ambiance is a bit livelier than in other caffés I'd been in, so maybe not the best place to lounge, but for cake, a definite yes! read more

Unquestionably the very best tortes we have had in Vienna! Forego the overrated Sacher torte - and try any of the other offerings. I chose the Stephanie torte and promise that it is the best thing this side of heaven! My husband went savory and enjoyed a delicious soup with hearty brotchen (bread rolls). When you enter the shop, walk to the back and up the curving staircase and find a table. The ones near the front of the shop provide a perfect perch from which to people watch both those in the street and other patrons in the shop. We found this cafe to be filled with Viennese couples enjoying a Sunday afternoon coffee with friends. It is relaxed with excellent wait staff, good coffee and excellent pot of Assam tea. But the star of the show is certain the sweet delicacies. Not to be missed! read more

We didn't get the full experience here, as it was New Year's Day and our last night in Vienna, so as much as we would have liked to sit, we instead bought several pieces of pastry to take back to our room to eat after we packed. Also, the storefront was filled with happy, celebrating customers, so we were wedged in so tightly it was at times difficult to make out what was in the displays. We ordered an Esterhazy and a slice of apple strudel, only stopping our purchases there because we planned to visit another bakery on the way back to the hotel. Both were excellent, though the strudel had a bit too much spice -- maybe nutmeg, maybe cinnamon -- for my personal taste. But it was still quality. We definitely hope to return someday when we're not crushed for time. The display cases here were VERY tantalizing. read more

Where do I start? After seeing several of the reviews, without reading them in detail, I was looking forward to paying this place a visit. As we walked in, the cakes on display looked scrumptious, however as it was early on in the day I went for the Big Breakfast option. This was mediocre to say the least, a vast amount of food but was very bland. We had a little cake after which was amazing. In addition the service was exceptional. To conclude, definitely visit this place if you're after cake, avoid if you're after breakfast. read more

Climbing the stairs and stepping into the L.Heiner cafe is like finding a haven from the bustling Vienna city center. I was initially lured in by the mouth-watering cakes and pastries in the 1F window, and I was not disappointed when I got inside. The cakes and pastries are all absolutely amazing, and they have a great selection of sweets, snacks, and delicious coffees (there really are no wrong choices). The service is polite but fits the stereotype of the busy Viennese waiter/waitress; this suits me just fine because I prefer to place my order and then be left alone to enjoy it. The ambiance in Heiner manages to be traditionally classy yet casual at the same time. There are few better places to relax and have a cup of coffee--cafe Heiner is definitely a favorite. read more

This cafe should not be missed for anyone visiting Vienna. They have a huge selection of all kinds of chocolates, cakes, everything. My favorite cheesecake ever is found at Heiner. There are lots of tourists, but I feel that this cafe still holds a strong personality. read more
