We went to the cafe/restaurant on the 2 nd floor . The ambiance is very nice but is very warm. There is no air flow . All the chandeliers and lights are in full blast. The Gersntner sausage and fish of the day are very flavorful and delicious. The Sisi cake and petit fours are pleasing to the eyes but are lacking. The petit fours have hard shells and the paper was stuck to the base. The cake are dry and not pleasing to the tongue . Really enjoyed the coffee. Service was just adequate. read more

Serxice was not client focused at all.. Although tables were available outside; and people were eating there, we were required to sit inside (maybe the waiter inside needed more tables?). I visited this place several times and always ended up exploring a bit more of the space. There's a cake and sweet shop downstairs, a bar on the first floor and a café on the second floor. The bar is nice if you wanna enjoy a coffee and one of their delicious and decadent home made cakes. But I recommend going up to the café. Here you will enjoy the opulent interior, the elegant atmosphere of the imperial times, the soft piano music and attentive service. You can also have some of the traditional meals they serve here. And they also offer a lunch special. We enjoyed the cakes and the overall atmosphere. The place is not cheap but I wouldn't consider it expensive either. I don't recommend this place at all. We went there hoping for a small meal before the opera at 7 pm. We were there around 5:50. We ordered a soup and a sandwich. We waited for more than 30 minutes and still no food. I finally had to get up, find our server, and ask politely if they could bring our plates since we have to go to the opera. The food arrived about 5 minutes later (so already 6:30). Instead of apologizing, the server told us dismissively, "Next time you should tell us you are going to the opera. Then I can tell the kitchen to hurry up." Excuse me? How long does it really take to ladle a bowl of soup and prep a very simple sandwich? I don't need to go to a cafe with mediocre food and a waiter with an attitude. There are plenty of good cafes in Vienna. read more

If I could give ZERO stars to Gerstner, I would. This used to be my FAVORITE cafe in Vienna, and they have the best cakes, BUT the service is HORRIBLE. Our waiter took 20 minutes to come and see us, we were nevertheless very nice and patient with him. When we were paying, he told us we should've bought coffees as well (we only took two cakes). I confronted him about the fact that it was not polite at all to say this to clients, and he litterally screamed at me telling me that 12 euros for 2 hours is bad for business, that we should have only been there for 45 minutes, that they wanted us to leave, RUDE RUDE RUDE. I have never been this dissapointed at a waiter in my life, this is not the Gerstner hospitality I love. Hopefully, you can spend your money at a TRUE viennese cafe that understands the viennese spirit of hospitality. read more

Oh my god! So good! we went their in the evening on our way to an Italian restaurant. As we were walking by, we saw their delicious selection of cakes, so we went to check it out. When we went in we saw a dinner menu. Sadly, the dinner ended at 6pm in the summer, and we were there at 7. Past 7, they only serve snacks and dessert. The server kindly gave us a recommendation and we headed down the stairs to exit. Half way down, we decided to eat some snacks from the restaurant and get some cake slices. The ambiance was SO COZY, the server was SO HELPFUL AND WELCOMING, and the food wasn't perfect, it was better than perfect. We ordered a cheese platter, which was amazing! They best part of the cheese platter was the amazingly flavorful, soft, and mouth-watering goat cheese. The bread was also very good quality. We also ordered some vegetarian sandwiches which came with a mayonnaise and ketchup type sauce. AND IT WAS PERFECT!!!! Then, we had the cakes. We ordered a pistachio petit 4, a Kimt cake ( which was like a chocolate cake with a rolled up almond icing), anod a cardinal cake. OH MY GOD!!! So amazing! The cakes were mouth-watering. Not too dry, not too moist. You can tell they disn't chemicals, even in the frostings. At the end, our server went completely above and beyond and gave us a free praline! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! read more

This was where we made our last purchase in Vienna, and I wish it could have been larger. It was New Year's Day and our last night in town, and we were stopping here and elsewhere to buy some snacks to eat in our room after we did our final packing. And speaking of packing, the shop was filled with celebrating customers, so many, in fact, that it was difficult to see what was in the display cases at times. We ordered, among other things, cherry strudel and some kind of chocolate hazelnut concoction I'm afraid I don't know the name of, plus a couple of slices of stollen. I very much enjoyed the strudel, though it was hard to tell whether that was because it was great strudel or because I just happen to be a sucker for cherry _anything_. But considering the quality of everything else we bought, I guess I have to say ... yeah, it was excellent strudel. But I was most impressed by the stollen, which put me in the holiday mood, and I regret not having bought more. We'd love to return someday when it's not a holiday and we can make more leisurely decisions. We felt quite rushed with the press of the crowd, and would welcome a chance to tour those display cases moire completely. Definitely worth a visit. Don't think you'll regret it! read more

It's a good thing I don't live near here. What a beautiful store. We finished our tour and the guide pointed us into this coffee CAKE shop. WOW! Everything was spiking span clean and all the cakes beautifully displayed behind glass. We had the sour cherry strudel with cream, apple strudel.....same and the HOUSE chocolate cake. The strudel was very good but the chocolate cake was so light and out of this world. Went down really nice with hot chocolate. And I was on a sugar high. I'd come in here everyday and sample their other cakes. For tourists there is a nice bathroom down the stairs and free if you are eating here. read more

My daughter and I came to Vienna to eat pastry, among other things. The beautiful window display at Gerstner caught our eye on our way to St. Stephen's. So of course we dropped in on our way back . First we examined the display case if delectable treats. I chose a raspberry slice and Sarah wanted Dobostorte. We nabbed a table, ordered our cakes and a pot of Darjeeling for me, a cappuccino for Sarah. Heaven! And not too expensive (about 11 euros for all). Coziest environment of Vienna! We came back again! Desserts and drinks were average but environment was great. Also great location. One thing is that it looks like a candy shop rather than a coffee shop. You enter and the ascend the stairs to a living room like lounge with a non-functioning piano, and lamp lights everywhere, little couches and antique-type tables. Very comfortable to hang out. Definitely the highlight of our culinary experience in Vienna. It was cold and snowy outside, and the restaurant had been recommended, so we pulled inside. The cafe is beautifully designed and elegantly decorated, with lavish furniture of European flair. We took the spiral staircase to the top floor, where we placed our coats and winter gear in the quaint coat room, and were immediately seated. The service was absolutely amazing, seeing as it takes a great deal of patience to deal with high school students, especially from America, but the waiters were incredibly cordial and attentive. The manager of the place made careful rounds of the cafe to assess service, giving us kind greetings and warm wishes. The coffee is served in beautiful cups, frothed to steamy perfection, and served with a small glass of water for a cool reprieve. We enjoyed the almond torte, which was light, fluffy, and with just a kiss of sweet. We also enjoyed the vegan chocolate torte, which was surprisingly rich and moist, a pleasant surprise given that it was the vegan option, and it is quite rare to have such a delicious treat made purely of vegan ingredients. The bartender was kind and inquisitive about our travels, and was gracefully attentive. We enjoyed our experience so much so that we purchased Gerstner coffee cups from the gift shop on the way out, which though somewhat pricey, were worth it for the deep royal blue and shimmering white design, beautifully embellished with a golden Gerstner logo. Even details such as the wrapping had such thought and care put in, as the cups were elegantly wrapped and gifted in white bags with satiny handles. The whole experience gives one a sense of elegance and grace, and for the quality of the food and service the slightly higher prices are definitely worth it, and even then they are still well within reason. The cafe's location is perfect-right in the heart of the shopping district. It is the perfect break from the snowy drifts and I 100% think that it will make your experience in Vienna well worth it. read more
