I visited this place several times and always ended up exploring a bit more of the space. There's a cake and sweet shop downstairs, a bar on the first floor and a café on the second floor. The bar is nice if you wanna enjoy a coffee and one of their delicious and decadent home made cakes. But I recommend going up to the café. Here you will enjoy the opulent interior, the elegant atmosphere of the imperial times, the soft piano music and attentive service. You can also have some of the traditional meals they serve here. And they also offer a lunch special. We enjoyed the cakes and the overall atmosphere. The place is not cheap but I wouldn't consider it expensive either. I like that the lunch menu includes not only meaty options but also vegetarian.

Famous cafe with large crowds and a lavish interior. They have soy milk and a vegan chocolate torte for dairy free/vegan options. I had a soy chai latte and tried the vegan cake. Both were okay, cake was very sweet and dense. Chai tea was pretty weak. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the experience of eating in this beautiful cafe!

My daughter and I came to Vienna to eat pastry, among other things. The beautiful window display at Gerstner caught our eye on our way to St. Stephen's. So of course we dropped in on our way back . First we examined the display case if delectable treats. I chose a raspberry slice and Sarah wanted Dobostorte. We nabbed a table, ordered our cakes and a pot of Darjeeling for me, a cappuccino for Sarah. Heaven! And not too expensive (about 11 euros for all). Would definitely go back, but there are other cafes to try!

Coziest environment of Vienna! We came back again! Desserts and drinks were average but environment was great. Also great location. One thing is that it looks like a candy shop rather than a coffee shop. You enter and the ascend the stairs to a living room like lounge with a non-functioning piano, and lamp lights everywhere, little couches and antique-type tables. Very comfortable to hang out. They also serve sparkling wine.

Gerstner is a long-standing bakery with a few locations (including at the former summer palace). They had a shop relatively near our hotel, so we stopped in early during the trip. If you are facing the State Opera House, Gerstner's is on the right across the street. Note that there is also some as or more famous outlet for cakes behind the Opera House also, but they appeared to have a line when we walked by. At Gerstner's you enter at street level where they have a dessert counter with displays. You can get a slice to go here. However, if you want more of the full experience, you can go upstairs (they have an elevator as well). A wide curving staircase gets you to the rather small 2nd level (the first floor, in local parlance). There are some tables here, but it has the air of a bookstore coffee shop. We opted to continue up to the next floor. Here, there is a dark hallway where you approach the host stand. There was one couple ahead of us and they got seated quickly. I think they had a bar as well as dining, so they ask which you want. We just wanted dessert, so they walked us past the bar. This floor has high ceilings and palace-like decoration. The vibe is definitely 'special' but they don't charge extortionate rates for it, which was nice. We were shown to a small table in the main dining room. I think you could see part of the Opera House out of the open windows. Two of us got coffees and we all split a Sachertorte. We enjoyed it, but everyone agreed that it was a bit dry. Maybe the Viennese don't go for moist cakes. They do have other items on the menu and I think you can get a regular meal here (schnitzel, salads, etc.). However, we visited around 2:30 p.m. on a weekday, so we just wanted the cake. The bill was reasonable, and we all agreed that this was a worthwhile experience.
