One thing my wife and daughter wanted to do in Vienna was to try the local cake, the Sachertorte. There are a few apparently famous venues for this (and a slew of other places too). Gerstner is a long-standing bakery with a few locations (including at the former summer palace). They had a shop relatively near our hotel, so we stopped in early during the trip. If you are facing the State Opera House, Gerstner's is on the right across the street. Note that there is also some as or more famous outlet for cakes behind the Opera House also, but they appeared to have a line when we walked by. At Gerstner's you enter at street level where they have a dessert counter with displays. You can get a slice to go here. However, if you want more of the full experience, you can go upstairs (they have an elevator as well). A wide curving staircase gets you to the rather small 2nd level (the first floor, in local parlance). There are some tables here, but it has the air of a bookstore coffee shop. We opted to continue up to the next floor. Here, there is a dark hallway where you approach the host stand. There was one couple ahead of us and they got seated quickly. I think they had a bar as well as dining, so they ask which you want. We just wanted dessert, so they walked us past the bar. This floor has high ceilings and palace-like decoration. The vibe is definitely 'special' but they don't charge extortionate rates for it, which was nice. We were shown to a small table in the main dining room. I think you could see part of the Opera House out of the open windows. Two of us got coffees and we all split a Sachertorte. We enjoyed it, but everyone agreed that it was a bit dry. Maybe the Viennese don't go for moist cakes. They do have other items on the menu and I think you can get a regular meal here (schnitzel, salads, etc.). However, we visited around 2:30 p.m. on a weekday, so we just wanted the cake. The bill was reasonable, and we all agreed that this was a worthwhile experience. read more

Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. Recommended by a local who we had as a tour guide. On the second floor of a 3 story business. Candy store on first floor. Café on third floor. Take stairs up from candy store entrance. Place was fairly empty in the evening. The second floor portion is more of a coffee house with deserts and some adult drinks to include champagne. No Port wine for desert though. A pretty nice variety of Austrian desserts. Pretty sure you can order food from regular ( non dessert) menu. Waiter was pleasant although a little slow despite the place being pretty empty. We waited so long that we were talking about leaving. Also had to get up and ask him for the check. Pretty amazing place being that i could not find anything close to it while sauntering city center. My hotel was near Cafe West End, which has similar je ne se qua. the plate specialty was pretty neat, had 'krill' these spicy vegetables that looked and textured like shredded mozzarella. this place is perfect for taking it slow vienna, make sure to make reservations for the third floor. I wish they had real courses when i was there at the time, but i was only offered bar snack options. the place was, hmmm , all of vienna is top class dress and business, and tourists, so it was a good space to think and all. that vegan cassis tarte was something else and very strawberry light good. cappuccino was also simple and elegant. service was excellent . go austria, it was the ideal cafe, but ive seen alot of others with way more ambiance. recommend read more

Never did try the food, the waiters ignored me, I waited for 49 minutes without my order or even water! It's 85 degrees! The "hostess" was rude and kept asking me where my table was. The group next to me complained about the food. No seating in the empty dining room so we all sat sweating in the heat. Would not recommend, lots of other much better cafes than this dump! read more

Eating dessert here was honestly one of my favorite moments during my few hour visit in Vienna. Located right across from the Opera House, this place screams charm and class, but with a reasonable price tag for the experience that you are getting. What I love most about this place is the aesthetic. Sorry but not sorry for all the pictures I took of this place as every corner of this place makes for the perfect backdrop with its charming paintings, frames and chandeliers.It seems fitting that we had just finished touring Schonbrunn Palace because it felt like I was dining in one of the imperial rooms straight from the palace itself since it was so majestic and beautiful. Keep in mind that the first floor (which reminds me of a vintage candy shop) is for desserts to take-away or to shop for gifts, while the second and third floor is reserved for dine-in. The food here is what you would expect of a place like this: each dessert/drink we ordered was beautifully prepared and was super scrumptuous. We ordered a chai latte, hot chocolate, hausetorte cake slice, and apple strudel---and would recommend every single one. Given that Vienna is known for apple strudel, I would especially go for the apple strudel as it achieved the perfect balance of a flaky outside and a moist and tender apple filling. The sauce you pour on top is sooo delicious. With just one bite, I immediately understood why people deem Vienna as THE place to get apple strudel. So glad I went here because it was a special treat for my few hours in Vienna. Definitely recommend this place if you're looking for authentic Viennese desserts and want to feel fancy :) read more

Such a beautiful cafe on the second floor. If you sit by the window, you can see the opera house right across the street. Prices are also very reasonable. We got a basil cream and tomato sandwich, shrimp sandwich and salmon sandwich (mini open faced sandwich that will fit in the palm of your hand), beef and vegetable noodle broth soup, and 3 pastries. We also got a melange (coffee with steamed milk) and 2 cappuccinos. The sandwiches were so refreshing and delicious- the basil one especially. Beef and noodle soup was light, which left room for the apple strudel, esterhazy torte, and poppy seed cake. Apple strudel wasn't very sweet but is loaded with apples in the middle. The pastry is flaky and light- the apple and sauce didn't soak through at all. Esterhazy torte had very even layers of sponge and cream but was a bit sweet for my taste. I could taste the brandy and rum, but it wasn't overpowering. The sides were hugged by sliced almonds which added a nice crunch. The poppy seed cake was chocolate flavored, not sweet, and had an interesting dense sponge- but it wasn't hard. The melange and cappuccinos tasted great. Not very hot but it's fine if you drink it right away. All in all, this was a great little cafe, great decor and service. I would come back if I'm ever in Vienna again. read more

Came here during my visit to Vienna. Popped in for a quick slice of linzertorte, which was amazing! Their service is faster than average, and we sat towards the back of the ground floor, away from the people milling around in the shop/cafe. I loved the texture of the hazelnut layer of the cake, which contrasted beautifully with the sticky jam upper layer. Definitely recommend! Found the third floor by accident. I was waiting in line to be seated for the second floor, but spotted some people taking the elevator. Decided to investigate and happened upon the GORGEOUS area found on the third floor. When you envision what Vienna looked like in the past, this is it. The rooms were ornate, and beautiful music was being played. We came here for brunch, and were seated immediately by a gentleman who said he had an extra table. This extra table came from people who were late to their reservation. So, make sure you arrive on time! Brunch was expensive, coming to 50 Euros per person. Was it worth it? Debatable. You start off brunch with an all you can eat starter buffet. The dishes served were amazing. Everything was cooked perfectly, proteins were paired with sauces and vegetables that you typically would not pair together. However, these pairings were great. After the starter buffet, you order a main course. You are able to order as many as you want. Just know, that the portion sizes for the main course are TINY. I ordered the risotto and it was about 4 spoonfuls worth of risotto. It was delicious, but small. Thus, make use of the unlimited main courses that you can order. You then have access to a cake display where you can get as many desserts as you desire. Overall, pretty good desserts. What makes this place have a 3 star rating is the service. If it weren't for the environment, I would definitely not return. First of all, no one stopped by our table to ask if we wanted anything to drink. No one cleared our plates away when we had finished, we had to put our plates on another table so we would have space for our dessert. When it came to paying the bill, we asked for it, and did not receive it after 15 minutes. We had to stand up from our table and chase down a waiter in order to pay. Waiters were basically non-existent and only seemed to focus on private events that were having in the room beside ours. Would come here for the experience of seeing the rooms, but service definitely needs to improve. read more

Oh my!!! This review is a few months late but this place was amazing for desserts!! We went late one night around 10 pm. Had coffee/drinks and a lot of dessert. Everything was so delicious and rich. The chocolate was like never tasted before. You have to try cakes and pastries in Vienna and if you want to do it in wonderful ambience with exceptional service then I would come here. Forewarning it is a bit on the price-r side compared to maybe some other places but I think it's absolutely worth it as they have everything you can think of. The menu is like 20 pages. read more

Our outing at the catered event at the Gerstner featured being in the upstairs dining area, within the milieu of buttressed ceilings and impressive crown moldings impressive with both the detail and obvious care of the entire establishment. Staff was not only attentive but also friendly, although this was a special event for a rather large party. The food was tasty, and included a pumpkin mousse, beef fillet, and wonderful selection of the many different types of desserts the restaurant is clearly renown. It's an impressive environment for sure, and the food lives up to expectations in taste and quality. Very opportune if one is in Vienna - at least come for the coffee and desserts. read more

The cutest shop right across from the Opera House! We got a table upstairs and ordered the locally famous sacher-torte (chocolate cake with apricot jam), apricot strudel, and some coffee (melange and cappuccino). The dessert here is some seriously good stuff. The torte is on the dense side and not overly sweet and the strudel is just the right mix of sweetness/tartness. We also tried the Schlumberger sparkling wine which was decent. The decor here is absolutely adorable. Service is on the slower side but I think that may just be the culture here (as Asian Americans we're accustomed to faster turnaround but maybe we're the ones who should slow down instead lol). This was the perfect spot to relax and unwind after our day-long sightseeing, and before the opera show. After we're done here it was a convenient 1 minute walk to the Opera House where we got our $4 Euro standing tkts to an awesome performance! Lastly if you spend enough you may get a receipt-like piece of paper with a rebate amount on it (I'm assuming it's proportional to how much was spent) that you can use towards dessert in the shop, as long as it's redeemed on the same day :) read more

As a beverage, I picked the Belvoir Lemonade (elderberry-rose flavor). -I had the elderberry-rose beverage in Megyer (a rural town in Hungary), so I was excited when I saw it. You can buy the drink at the storefront downstairs. Tasted just like the drink in Megyer. -The cake was rich and the chocolate part was moist. Not too sweet. Just right. This is one of our favorite places in Vienna! Perfect place to sit and have a drink or a coffee and a yummy desert! We ordered two spritzer type drinks made with prosecco and fruits and they were amazing. We got some of the ice cream and an apple strudel too which were also awesome! They also give you a little glass of water to start your meal (which, coming from the land of free water with your meal, that was very appreciated)! They have an affordable and delicious selection of desserts (3€ cupcakes, 4-5€ slices of cake and strudel), the best of which I think is the truffle torte. This was probably my favorite cafe in Vienna that I visited. It has this beautiful Parisian feel to it with the perfect light music playing in the background. It has a beautiful spiral staircase, velvet chairs, a wall of framed roses and champagne and beautiful cakes. I had the Gerstner Toast and it was amazing! The rosemary toast and tomatoes spread make the sandwich. The staff is friendly and attentive but not overbearing. I came here solo and felt totally comfortable. Highly reccomended! read more

Cakes were very good-not Paris quality, by very good nonetheless. we had the Hausetorte, "Spanish" tart and the fruit tart (forgot the exact name). What was the most impressive about this place was the decor - high ceiling on the top floor with giant-beautiful chandelier. Ceiling had paintings and was decorated like a palace museum. Had nice soft music playing in background in the evening. Definitely plan to come back here if I ever come back to Vienna. Loved this place- definitely get a seat on the 3rd floor if u want to be wowed. We later realized there is a whole second floor with a spiral staircase. The furniture is antique-like, and the vibe is a victorian library or living room. A cozy, semi-upscale dining area for desserts. It has three floors, with the first floor having a space where you can order ice cream and other desserts to-go. The decor was really cute, though partially over-the-top for my taste. I got the coffee shake, which was basically a shot of espresso on the bottom followed by a couple layers of vanilla ice cream, topped with some whipped cream and other goodies. Very delicious, though how simple it sounds. The ice cream was creamy, and the coffee was fragrant. I had a bite of my friend's Sachertorte, and the cake was very fluffy. I'd say that the food is on the more expensive side, though it is to be expected, being right in front of the opera house and in the city (and thus tourist) center. But, if you're looking for a place to relax after a long day of walking and travelling, I would highly recommend this place. read more
