Another classic coffee shop in Vienna. I sat just feet from where Freud used to sit. Imagine that! This place is more formal than a lot of other places. Still, I had the classic Vienna coffee with a Wiener Apfelstrudel. We then proceeded insude to have a light dinner, the wait was minimal. They took our coats and seated us. The waiter took our orders. We had beef soups, and beef goulash. The food was good not outstanding. We were so full we could not have any additional dessert. Once our order was taken we never saw the waiter again. I appreciate that it was easy to get reservations (although in the end we didn't use them since opted to sit outside) and this was the perfect spot to start our vacation in Vienna. We had both dinner and dessert as well as coffee. The schnitzel was impeccable--well seasoned, moist meat, and not oily nothing like the subpar versions I have had at home. Our youngest had a bread dumpling with mushrooms--this was rich but delicious as well. For dessert, we had the Landtmann original and apple strudel. Both cake slices were moist and flavorful.... hands down both desserts were the best we sampled while in Austria (and narrowly edged out Demel for us). The decaf coffee was fantastic as well.... although we were so impressed by the food we were equally grateful for the exemplary service--prompt and friendly. For a cafe that presents itself as high-end, with premium prices, elegant decor, and formally dressed staff, the level of service was surprisingly poor. We ordered coffee and cake. The coffee arrived, but the cake didn't. After waiting, I could actually see our cake sitting at the counter ready to be served, while our coffee was getting cold. What made it worse was that I repeatedly tried to get the staff's attention, but nobody responded. Earlier, staff had come to our table several times asking whether we were ready to order, yet when we actually needed service and tried to signal them, we were essentially ignored. Eventually, I had to get up and approach the manager myself just to ask what had happened to our cake. The young waiter finally said, "I'm sorry, I forgot," but his tone came across as rude and irritated rather than genuinely apologetic. When I expressed my dissatisfaction, his repeated "sorry" felt more like "I already said sorry, what else do you want?" than an attempt to acknowledge or correct the poor service. What disappointed me most was the manager's response--or lack of one. The manager was aware of the situation but didn't come over to apologize, offer to replace the coffee that had been getting cold, or make even a small gesture to address the bad experience. Instead, the attitude from a distance seemed unfriendly and dissatisfied with us for raising the issue. Mistakes happen. Forgetting a cake by itself wouldn't have prompted me to leave such a negative review. What matters is how a business responds when a mistake is brought to its attention. In a place positioning itself as an upscale cafe and charging accordingly, I expected considerably better customer service and a more professional response. Another famous Cafe, the hubby and I got to try this during our trip to Vienna. This is a cafe where famous people have visited so it is quite popular as it is located near city hall. We had to wait in line for around 30ish minutes before we were seated. The ambiance here takes you back in time and service here was very good. As we were visiting in the afternoon, we got a latte as well as the famous apple strudel in vanilla sauce. The strudel was good and the vanilla sauce is definitely sweet, but the dessert did not taste as fresh as I feel it should have been. My five star is based on the Apple strudel. Each time we dropped by there was a short line out the door. However, there is was a pan of Apple strudel outside under a warming lamp so we sat outside in the freezing cold and had strudel. It was flakey, perfect, and the vanilla sauce was excellent and plentiful. I'm not sure there is a better strudel. I highly recommend it! Cafe Landtmann is a Viennese coffee house established in 1873. It is located across the street from Rathausplatz. When I arrived at lunch time they were completely packed for outdoor seating and had a small line of people for sitting outdoors. Fortunately they had plenty of seating indoors. The inside of this place is fancy and the service was excellent as well. The lunch menu had very few items that looked appealing and so I settled on a salad with chicken. Salad with Chicken (23 euros) - The salad consisted of a layer of potatoes topped with some greens and 3 pieces of chicken tenders lightly battered. It wasn't exactly the healthy option I was seeking, nor did I see any healthy options on the menu. Taste wise everything was ok. The menu was extremely limited in items for lunch. Water (7.50 euros for a 1 liter bottle) - This costs less than 1 euro at the grocery store. I don't know how they can justify this pricing. Overall the food was just ok. The décor and service were great. I made a huge mistake by not reading my YELP buddy Sam B.'s review as her experience wasn't that great either here. I know better next time. :P read more

Lucky lucky. Was dying after no lunch and fighting through the hordes at the Egyptian exhibit in the museum of Fine Arts. No zombies, just too many humans. Since Cafe Landtmann supplies other cafes with treats, I thought better check it out here. The waiter was speedy and had my melange ( flat white), water, Sacher torte and take-away Mozart torte all ready. The sacher torte was completely different that I had imagined it!. Maybe it's Vienna style???. The ones I usually have from Japanese-french patissiers and even in Budapest were dense, with darker chocolate layers and ganache and just the tantalising hint of the marmalade like layer. This torte was delicious but drier, fluffier, with milk chocolate and a slightly thicker marmalade like layering. I liked it but my dream was incongruent with the reality. Sadly, no time to checkout out cafe Sacher ( l'original) to compare. It's great service, great ambience, good coffee, cheap ( 2 desserts and a coffee only 20 euros). Wienerschnitzel with parsley potato was quite good, the salad was overdressed. Beef soup was too salty. The sausage platter was delicious. I would not order the ordinary salmon plate again. When visiting Vienna, there were a few things I was told I had to do, including going to the opera and going to an actual coffeehouse (picture a brunch or hotel restaurant, and not your typical local Starbucks coffee shop). Cafe Landtmann is one such famous coffeehouse in Vienna. Located on The Ring, Cafe Landtmann is a beautiful and spacious "coffeehouse." I sat inside and ordered the cheese strudel with vanilla sauce (7.20E) and a chai tea latte (5.90E). I was debating between one of the many cake slice options and the strudel, but opted for the strudel since it seems to be a Vienna specialty, as I've seen it being sold everywhere throughout the city. My total was 13.10 Euros plus tip. The chai tea latte was definitely not worth the high price tag of 5.90 euros, or about $6.50, as I've definitely had better ones stateside. Even the Starbucks version is better than the chai latte I had here. The cheese strudel was ok and I'm glad I finally tried it to see for myself what all the hype is about, but I would not want to get it again. Service was great though. read more

After checking our coats we were seated at a cozy booth for 2. The waiters in black suits and ties were attentive to our needs and wants. My wife got the Weiner Melange to drink and I ordered the Ottakringer. Both were very good. I had the Weiner schnitzel with the potato salad. This was one of the best schnitzel I have ever had. The portion was large covering the entire plate and was served with a cranberry compote. The potato salad was tasty as well. My wife had the sweet potato gnocchi which was served with a ragu. This was flavorful and the sauce was fresh. For dessert we had the Kaiserschmarrn. This came with an apple and a berry compote. This was delightful and a perfect end to our meal. I would highly recommend eating here for either a full meal or dessert. You won't be disappointed. read more

One of the best cafes in Vienna! They have a coat check-in right when you enter the establishment which is great for checking in your heavy winter coat. I'm glad we were able to walk in and get a table for two right away. We ordered the beef goulash, wiener schnitzel, a Viennese coffee, chamomile tea, and a chocolate mousse torte for dessert. Everything from the food to the service was spectacular and our server was very friendly. Also, it's walking distance to one one of the many christmas markets in Vienna, if you happen to be visiting during late November or the December months. A historic Viennese cafe should be on everyone's to-do list when in Vienna. Cafe Landtmann was charming yet refined and I felt as though I was transported back into time. Not often do you still see such elegantly dressed staff and wooden detailing in a restaurant. We came here for breakfast and were pleasantly surprised by the ambiance and menu. I almost never order scrambled eggs because they often come out dry or too scrambled, but this was a rare exception. I was delighted to see eggs that looked (and tasted) close to perfection. They were bright yellow, slightly runny and came with a side of chives. I devoured every bite. My boyfriend and I split a Viennese croissant and topped it with apricot jam, which turned out to be the perfect combination. I washed it all down with a cappuccino: standard, but still hit the spot. Though the restaurant was busy, you could tell the staff cared more about the experiences of the guests than turning tables. We didn't feel rushed and were able to soak up all of the history and moments together. I loved this place and it left a lasting impression on me. read more

The apple strudel is supposed to be the best. First, I am not a fan of raisins, but they were fairly cooked down so they were a non issue. We got ours with the vanilla cream sauce. For sweets we got the petits four which are three small originals, all we're not good - only one bite of each. The waiters are all in tuxedos. Food was solid. Not quite 5 stars but pretty good 4.5. The ambiance and experience push it up to a 5. Came here on my last morning in Vienna, as this cafe had been recommended to me by a few friends who had been in the city. It was extremely hot outside, but they had light misters going so it was a perfect setting. I came in unsure what to get, and the waiter was SO helpful. I told him it was my last day in Vienna, and he told me the apple strudel was their specialty, and he was not lying. That was the best strudel ive had in my entire life. I also got a vienesse coffee with it. Great decision. The waiter told me that if I should also try these bacon wrapped sauasages that they have, as it is his favorite thing on the menu.
