I stopped at their stand at the Oakland lake Merritt farmers market and paid 6.50 for two small "crispy" salmon nuggets, that were not crispy at all, and they were ice cold! Come to find out the owner says they had been sitting out with no refrigeration for 30minutes...and refused to make more or accommodate me in any way. I even asked to exchange for one shrimp blossom ball (which were hot) . The lady even tried to fault me for not making sure the food was warm before I received it? We've been regulars and love the steamed dumplings and sticky rice so much that we even got frozen dumplings to enjoy at home in between the weekends. Olivia is always so welcoming and patient even when the line is so long. I had a really disappointing experience at Tru Gourmet (San Rafael). When I went to place my order, I asked if they accepted Venmo (since another one of their locations does). Instead of just answering the question, the person at the window curtly told me to "read the sign" and pointed to one that said "Place order here." I have been eating here as long as I can remember, and I've yet to have a better BBQ pork bun. The meat is high quality, which isn't always the case for SF dim sum resturants. Every week we load up on Dim Sum for our Sunday breakfast and our kids snacks for the week (they love sticky rice and jin doi!). Kids wanted xlb and this place was at the palo alto farmer's market so decided to try it out. Their food is not cheap and not even reasonably priced! Xlb was 2 for $6.50! Compared to other xlb restaurants, they're going for about $1.50 each. This place is more than 2x the cost! Suffice to say, I didn't even get to try it to see if they were even remotely worth it (but judging from the looks, they did not). I tried the crab & shrimp dumpling and it was ok. I came here to grab food at the farmers market because dim sum sounded delicious on a cold, drizzly day. I was expecting larger portions especially for the cost. When I opened my four items: two dumplings and two buns, I was slightly disappointed at how tiny things were . It was supposed to be lunch but it was easily a snack. Each dumpling easily fit as a tiny bite and each bun could be consumed in a larger bite. While it's nice that they have vegan and gluten-free options, I honestly can't justify these "gourmet" dumplings. Walking around the marin farmers market, there are so many food choices. This stall is the best food you could get at a farmers market hands down. There is always a line, so be prepared to wait. I waited about ~25 minutes, but once you get to the front, they quickly grab your dim sum for you. When I go, my favorites are the steamed bbq pork buns, the siu mai (pork & shrimp), and fun gor (chicken and mushroom). Vegans and vegetarians know how rare it is to find any friendly items at traditional dim sum joints. I myself have only found a couple of places in the last 9 years, none of them memorable. I purchase from this business at the Cal Ave. farmers market and they have a generous selection of vegan items. The items are very tiny, dollhouse size and very very expensive. It's worth it to me because it tastes good and they are providing a product that isn't easy to find. I love the shiitake rice in lotus leaf, the scallion pancake, and any of the dumplings. After waiting for 45 minutes we went to order and were told they were out of almost everything. It would have been nice if they let people waiting in line know but people behind us were also waiting without a clue how little was left.
