Honey Walnut Prawns, house specialty, excellent!
    Jennifer O.

The restaurant is all dressed up for Chinese New Year. I'm sure they're going to have families and generations celebrating all weekend and next week. Lucky to just miss the crowds, I enjoyed Uncle Wing Restaurant's excellent Honey Walnut Prawns ($12.99), crunchy fresh shrimp pan fried and tossed in a decadent creamy sauce with candied walnuts. A Yelper recommended it highly and she was spot on. I knew better than to order two fried items but I couldn't resist their Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings ($9.99) So I got them. The wings were sensational. I saved a couple for my son. Service was a bit slow but I arrived at an off hour. They graciously let me linger until a half hour before they closed for lunch; I was biding time until I could pick up my son. I'd go again to try their black pepper beef and delicious looking fish dishes. Happy Lunar New Year!

They have great service and authentic Chinese food. The fried egg rolls were super delicious and big. Very filling for an appetizer. I also really enjoyed the shrimp, pork, chicken combo with fried rice. I tend to like spice, so I asked them to make it spicy and they were happy to do so.

As you can see from my photos, the menu has been totally revised and options narrowed. I arrived quite early and there was nobody else in the dining room. I was greeted promptly and courteously. The decor was a little dated. The chairs have slipcovers like your old aunt Mildred might have used, but it just reminded me of some old places in Chinatown that have been there forever. Speaking of which, the drastic change in the menu from what I had seen online before I went, plus the food not matching some past stellar reviews had me wondering if perhaps the place had changed hands. It didn't seem to be quite the same restaurant described on the Yelp page that guided me here. My initial selection was the Szechuan beef, but I was told that this would be deep fried like the meat in sweet and sour pork or General Tso's chicken. That didn't sound like any Szechuan beef I've ever had before, so I changed my order and got the black pepper beef instead. This dish was tasty, the beef was tender, and the portion was adequate, but the one flavor I didn't notice was that of black pepper. I ordered a "small" hot and sour soup and received a bowl that might have served four. They show three sizes of soups on the menu. After I remarked on the "small" size being still rather large, I was told that I could have asked for a "cup," but this option was not indicated on the menu, nor did the server suggest it when I ordered. I did like the soup. The location was convenient, the service friendly, and the price reasonable. The food was good, but I wouldn't have gone out of my way for it if I had seen the new menu before I went. I don't think I will be back.

The service is really nice the woman is very thoughtful and very caring and I really love the egg rolls especially for the price I keep coming back

The egg rolls are big and crispy!

Phenomenal food! The freshest, crispiest, and most flavorful chinese cuisine I've ever had. Friendly staff, intimate, cozy dining area. Must try the salt and pepper wings!!! Always love this place.

We got the general chicken and garlic chicken. Super amazing!! Would definitely recommend.

The singular perfection that is General Chicken at Uncle Wings in San Rafael

Here's a tip for all San Rafaelites in these inflationary times. Drop everything and hit this unassuming, charming Cantonese favorite for dinner. (OK, maybe check first to see if they've fixed their broken AC !) But do not sleep on their current (and must be popular) dinner special, something they call their "personal dinner". Choose any of their entrees, they add a perfect egg roll, some warm and satisfying wonton soup and a lovely dome of steamed rice for just $5.49 above the entree price. Still a pretty fair deal when you consider that their other menu simply has entrees and dishes at full price. So guess who serves the very best General Tso's Chicken? These guys do. No overcooked boulders of fried, over sauced boulders that are essentially coating, no cloying thick, molassesy gloppy sauce that's overly salty. Nothing could be more different, and yet be so elegant. Instead they served up a marvelous plate of golden, lightly fried but still crispy chicken with a glazey dousing of a light, oniony sauce that enrobed the pieces of chicken and kept everything moist and super delicious. More Chinese spots could learn a lot from this preparation. I finished the whole $11.99 entree. San Rafael, you've got a winner here, and convenient parking across the street. Service could not have been kinder.

Beef chow fun and pot stickers, DELICIOUS! Yes that dragon truly resides on my counter. He isn't there just for the pic lol

I also had lemon chicken and beef and broccoli. I expected the lemon chicken to be similar to sweet and sour chicken/pork or orange chicken where the batter/outside is fried and crispy and the chicken/pork in the center is seasoned and tender. The batter/outside was for lack of a better word "soggy" but the saucy was lemon forward with a slight tang. I'll rate it a 5/10. The beef and broccoli had a strong ginger flavor that I was a fan of, so I would rate it a 2/10. The service was fast and attentive and the restaurant itself is average not fancy and not rundown. I've already visited again and my opinion has not changed.

We also ordered the spicy garlic eggplant which was a huge portion and melted in our mouths. The sauce is the traditional sweet, tangy and spicy which they got in pretty good balance with the piping hot eggplant. It's great to know about this place. The menu is huge so much to keep coming back for. And our server (from Goa surprisingly) was super sweet and friendly. I would only recommend them changing two white lightbulbs that were out of theme with all the others of a softer warm tone. On 12/24/25, we couldn't get through their regular phone number quite a few times due to a busy signal. We then placed a Door Dash order at 4:50pm. After the app updating the delivery time several times, the order was suddenly "cancelled by the restaurant." We were really looking forward to our dinner for two hours, so you can imagine our disappointment and scrambling for alternatives on Christmas Eve. We did receive a refund for the exact amount that was charged to the credit card. We had decided to try the restaurant again on 12/31/25. Again, we couldn't get through. So I went in person to place the order to ask why the restaurant cancelled our 12/24/25 order. I've never heard of a confirmed order being cancelled before. They said they "cancel Door Dash orders at 6:30pm. A lot of people were disappointed, too." I said but we had placed our order at 4:50pm. I couldn't understand his reasoning. We decided to never use them again. Despite our terrible inconvenience and decision to never dine here again, we decided to place an order today 12/31/25 at 4:19pm for pick-up in person, so I could ask in person what happened on 12/24/25. They said today's order would take 25-30 minutes. It was ready at 4:37pm. That was redeemable, but we still don't understand what happened on 12/24:25 and don't feel confident that it will never happen again. So I imagine the lesson learned is beware of placing Door Dash orders at this restaurant! See photos for proof of our experience.
