Came here because the gf and I had heard and read sooooooo many good things about this place. We were about to find out otherwise. Apparently this is the hot spot in town and everyone comes here, including multiple generations of the same family. Service was pretty quick and friendly, but that's where the good ends. The place smelled disgusting because the tables where you sit have absorbed the vinegar and malt vinegar over the years and now leach it back into the air. You don't notice it until your food comes and halfway through your meal you lose your appetite. Overrated, overhyped, and overwhelming (the smell that is). read more

Oh my. Our friends raved about the Fish and Chips. Unfortunately I can't eat them in the way they're meant to be eaten. I have to have it Batter-less. Okay, I made a poor choice. When it arrived that poor skinned naked Cod fish looked like an unbleached leftover sock stuck in the washer. Let's talk about the fries because I'm on a Fries kick. They were O.K. The Fish..... I don't know, because it was tasteless. The smell in there reminded me of the Mess Hall from Camp. Let's just say it's an unpleasant memory. I wanted to share some of my pop with my buddy, so I grabbed a mug from a preset table, and it had a ring of Coffee in it. Ew. I also had to wipe my knife on my napkin before using it. I would call this a "Denny's" or "Swiss Chalet" of Fish and Chips, but I think that would put those places down. Our friend's enjoyed their meal and they like the place, and we like them so ... oh well. I wouldn't likely go back to Troll's though. read more

I hesitated before deciding to give Troll's the full five stars. For a long time, Troll's was THE place to go for fish and chips in the Lower Mainland. A few years ago, they decided to try franchising the name, but the quality control just wasn't up to snuff, and the franchises flopped. I think they're all safely gone by now. Today, you can get fish and chips at Troll's which makes you understand why God invented fish and potatoes, and you can get fish and chips which would be on a par with what you'd get at any place that uses fresh fish, rather than reheating frozen fish sticks. I have no way of predicting what the quality is going to be like on any given day. I've found it to be wonderful more frequently than not, but I do feel compelled to warn you that it can be inconsistent. One tip: once, when I ordered cod, they brought me salmon by mistake. I had already taken a bite before I realised that the fish was pink rather than white, but then I decided not to bother complaining. I had always had salmon fried, baked, or barbecued (or in sushi) before, and had never even considered it in fish and chips, but it works marvellously that way. read more

Awesome place to go if you're looking for a bite to eat while waiting for your ferry! Super friendly staff and managers. Some people don't like it but I honestly appreciate them hiring younger staff , it's definitely important for the youth in our community to be given a good place to work and I'm sure it would be an awesome first job! Great fish and chips and amazing takeout system! read more

Cozy ambience with outdoor seating. The outdoor seating is perfect for those who love to people watch because it's right across the park and ferry stop. They have the heat lamps turned on during the colder weather. The food itself was memorable. The fish&chips was slightly under seasoned but I think my american palette just preferred heavier seasoning. The plate comes with two large pieces of fish - great for someone who has a average appetite and is hungry. The calamari was better than the fish&chips. The batter was perfectly fried and crispy though it lacked some flavor. The service wasn't exactly attentive but our water and coffee filled when asked. read more

I will not be going back. The only thing this place has going for it is the beautiful view. Does not have great food to match the view. I do not exaggerate when I say their fish & chips are the worst I have ever had. Additionally, for the bad food you get it is overpriced and the service needs work. The place was less than half full when we walked in to the hostess desk & found my group waiting to be seated for at least 5 mins while 5 employees walked by us (more than once) until finally 1 acknowledged us. Wish we had walked out because the food is not worth the wait. I recommend going to C-Lovers across the street if you're looking for great sea food & great service. read more

Probably should have gotten the fish and chips but didn't feel like a greasy meal. Got the " troll wrap " claiming Crispy chicken and avocado and tomato and lettuce. It was pretty miserable. The chicken was not at all crispy, almost soggy and the avocado was a nasty green sauce. I would not even call it guacamole. Flavor was not pleasant. To make matters worse my glass of water had a funky dishwasher smell to it. Fries were good though. I remember this place being pretty good a while ago. read more

Sub-mediocre breakfast experience. I came to eat here Canada Day, for breakfast, with family from the island. It was busy, yes- but there were still empty tables. To start off, we were seated at the wrong table by waitstaff- when the other half of our party arrived off the ferry, they were seated at another table. When we called our relatives over, a waiter told us the table we were at was too small for a party of seven and we would be moved. Okay. Some of us had ordered drinks before we were moved, I was not impressed when the waitress seriously admonished me for not carrying my own drink across the restaurant. Alright, fair enough- I probably could have done that, although we were all carrying gifts and large bags. When we ordered, my wife and I made the same request- omelettes, no hash browns, could we sub a salad, and was that okay? The waitress (same one who told me to move my own drink) was again unpleasant, and said, "I guess I have to try now, don't I." All our orders were taken, and the waitress then left half the menus uncollected on the table for another twenty minutes. We recieved our food 54 minutes after we ordered. One of our party asked for a water refill and was ignored. I ended up giving her my water. My omelette came with hash browns despite my request for them to be subbed out. The omelette itself was terrible. The simplest filling, mushroom and cheese, and the filling was both grainy and watery, completely flavourless. At least my eggs were cooked (somewhat) to order. After we had finished our meal, we had to wait, yet again, for our bill. And by that I mean we waited so long we decided to stand up and chase down our waitress to pay. I'm of the belief that people only eat here because there is literally nothing else at Horseshoe Bay. Both the food and service experiences were awful, I will never eat here again. Overpriced Triple O's on the ferry is a better bet than Troll's. read more

Even if you're not catching a ferry, fish and chips at Trolls is as good a reason as any to venture out to Horseshoe Bay. The restaurant has been owned by the Troll family for years and years, and the beer-battered cod and halibut and hand-cut fries were as good as I remembered them. My companions and I shared an apple crisp for dessert. It came in a big bowl and was piping hot - almost too hot. The apples were practically liquid and laced with cinnamon and sugar, and got really good once the vanilla ice cream had melted in. Just a really pleasant spot for lunch with a view of the pretty bay if you're facing the right direction. read more

Would I come back? - Yes. You come not for the food, but for the location and back drop. This is also the only place in the small village of Horseshoe Bay that offers a breakfast like this, at a descent price. I would like to return to see the sun set into the water and try their well known fish and chips. Would I recommend it? - No, there really isn't much that sets this place apart, besides its lengthy and rich history. If you are in the area, absolutely stop in to try. But if you are in a rush, fast food places like "Subway" and "Fresh Slice" are available for cheaper. And I do not recommend driving all the way just for this place, do it for the scenery and nature. Don't deny your craving for refreshing air and quiet sights at Horse Shoe Bay. read more

Go for the chips, not for the fish. During a trip to the island at the beginning of June, I stopped by Troll's takeaway window for a mid-afternoon lunch. After I ordered and paid, I stood a distance away so that more customers could order and pickup food. I watched a number of customers order just chips and receive their order immediately. Fast forward to fifteen minutes after I ordered. I checked in with the cashier to make sure I hadn't missed my order being called. She rudely informed me that food takes a while to cook; also that the fish was cooked but another more chips were cooking. (So, does that mean that ONE of those FIVE orders of only chips could have been for me? Apparently.) Twenty minutes after I ordered, I finally received my order. The chips were hot. The fish was not. My breaded and fried fish had obviously been standing for a while. Yuck. read more

Came here from an accidental bus ride to Horseshoe Bay. Me and my aunt were starving and so we arrived at Troll's. The best part about this place is that if you want to order take out, there is a booth right beside the restaurant so the food goes out faster. But only some menu items are available for take out. I ordered the Cod and Chips, while my aunt ordered Halibut and Chips. Food took about 15 minutes, a good wait time since many people were at the take out stand. The fish was cooked perfectly and the fries were nicely golden brown. Only thing about the fish is the batter on the outside was a little burnt. Overall great taste and good service! read more

We arrived with lots of time to catch the ferry, and the only tables occupied were the booths along the window. After waiting almost an hour, and watching others get their food out of turn, I asked a server about our food. Her tone was dismissive, and she didn't even bother to check the order that I could see sitting under the warmer, from my table. After another 5 -10 minutes yes, another server brought us the order that had now been sitting even longer. Our consolation for the poor service ... wait for it ... $3.50 off the bill. Never again read more

I had thought all Troll's Restaurants were gone until remembering about this one nestled down near the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal. Inside it is not very fancy but that is just fine as it had a nice atmosphere. My food was decent, if not slimmed portioned for the price. Ultimately I have no really bad things to say about eating at Trolls but then I have nothing all that great to say about them either. At the end of the day it was OK but nothing special. read more

I grew up going to Troll's every time my family was heading up to Whistler to ski. Might be Pavolian, but everytime I set foot in Troll's I am happy and hungry. The fish and chips are what I always get. Not as good as Dave's Fish and Chips in Steveston, but not many places are even close. Portions here are very generous. I can usually scoff down 2 pieces with fries no problems, but not here. One piece will suffice, so great value for very good fish and chips. You have to love Horseshoe Bay too. read more

Service is great, atmosphere is nice as well. However the menu is very misleading on a couple of items. I ordered the Clubhouse sandwich. The menu read "Roasted fresh turkey" but I received thinly sliced processed turkey and very little of it. Today I came back to give my childhood restaurant another chance. I asked our server about the club and told him that I received deli meat and pointed out the description in the menu. The server apologised and said its still deli meat. I suggested that they edit the menu. Our server told us that he would bring it to their attention but that he doubted they would change anything. read more

I had an incredible lunch experience! The fish 'n chips were delicious, and I was unexpectedly impressed by the simple but very tasty coleslaw! Service was very friendly and fast. I would highly recommend Troll's if you're in the area! read more

I have to say the fish and chips was out of this world. I also ordered a side of prawns. The French fries were a bit over cooked but the fish and the prawns made up for it. The service was awesome. Our server was friendly. I highly recommend this place for the Fish! read more

I came here on recommendation for their fish and chips. Good amount of chips and the fish was nice and fluffy. There was a crowd and it was busy, however, there was very little wait for us. The customer service was super friendly and nice and the prices were fair market value. It does get noisy so conversation may be a struggle. read more

Breakfast was trash. Waited forever to be served over cooked eggs. That were cold. Literally standing in line at the ferry cafe to have a breakfast redo. read more

Ordered their Troll's clubhouse sandwich and a bacon and eggs brekkie. Took them quite a bit longer than expected to bring them out, and the place was only a little more than half full inside. Guess they're busy making other people's fish and chips. Anyway, the sandwich was excellent with loads of bacon and turkey, and the included fries were salted just right. The bacon and eggs brekky were, well, bacon and eggs, with some over-seasoned hash. We were actually a bit disappointed with their breakfast selection as there were only like three items to choose from with no weekend brunch offerings whatsoever. read more

We got top notch service when it was very busy! We ordered a wrap and forgot to ask for gluten free and when it arrived we realized our mistake and they quickly brought a new one at no cost!! They were very nice and our meals were good too read more

Bleh! Got a couple of cheeseburgers from the takeout window, the buns looked pretty ( I don't eat bread) but the insides were awful! I wasn't expecting a jimmy dean mini breakfast sausage on the inside. Greasy, spongey, weirdness. Pretty sure their was NOT a 100% all beef patty. Pretty bun, pile O mayo lettuce tomato and the grodiest patty I've encountered in years, that came from an establishment. The ferry burgers are way better, and they are not great. Disappointment and dissatisfaction once again in the ferry line up. Bleh. $8 a burger and not even any fries. Horseshoe Bay should get a fast food joint. read more

On a semi cloudy day to catch up with some old friends, we decided to make a trip to one of my favorite bays. The view from this place is absolutely beautiful and I like the fact that you can just walk in and grab the best seat on the patio without the hassle of having to line up unlike other downtown locations. Our server was very friendly, gave us the best seat in the house and came back to check on us everytime it was necessary. We each ordered a glass of Merlot/Cab which was just ok so the wine list is not that impressive. I ordered a one piece Halibut fish and chips which was cooked to perfection. I'd say it was enough food to fill me up without the need for an appetizer. Amazing view, friendly crowd delicious and fresh fish all ingredients of a perfect summer night spent on one of the most picturesque patios in town! read more

Been coming here since I was a kid. My favourite used to be their giant bowl of red clam chowder. It was loaded and definitely a meal on its own. Second favourite was the monster burger but now we usually go for the fish and chips. Like most things it was better when I was young but this place is still worth a stop on a nice summer day If the restaurant is busy just grab your food to go and head across the street to the park. Be aware of the seagulls as they will snatch anything you don't keep an eye on. read more

Stopped in to eat as they had veggie options on the menu. That was the only requirement. Decor looks like a Denny's or a Perkins. Service was good. Friendly, speedy, no complaints there. I had the most mehy stir fry. Broccoli, baby carrots and beans. That was it. No protein available for those of us that don't eat animals. Greasy sauce over "asian style noodles". For $13. Nope. I won't be back. For those of you who eat seafood, my pal was pleased with his fish and chips. read more

Great atmosphere, super friendly staff and decent food for the price. My only criticism is that the fries looked like it has been sitting in the warmer for a while. Other than that, I recommend this lovely neighborhood diner to anyone visiting Horseshoe Bay village. read more

First time eating here We waited patiently for a table. Service was good. We were told it is an hour wait to get some food so we ordered a couple of appetizers to share. The server came back and told us that she talked to the manager and we should not get appetizers because it will hold up the kitchen. Seriously?? They literally down sold us so we cancelled the order at the managers request. Very very disappointed in the halibut and chips. All grease. You could see the grease. Fries were cold and hard. There were a lot of staff but they just couldn't function. It is literally a greasy fish joint that can't keep up. Half the restaurant was empty by the time we sat down. People say 15 minutes after us were fed first. Very disappointing and we went there because we had out of town guest. read more

Stopped here on our way home from Whistler. First thing I noticed was how disgusting the floor was under all of the tables... looks like a bunch of young kids that work there so I feel like the cleanliness is overlooked a bit. Food was a little overpriced, tasted decent though. Our server, a curly haired lady (sorry didn't catch her name but our bill said server #00629), barely said anything to us but it wasn't completely awful service. When we were paying our bill, we planned to pay on card and tip in cash... server prints our receipt and asks "did you mean to tip $0?" I couldn't believe it, how rude! Yes we did mean to but we weren't going to screw you out of a tip.. learn some manners. Don't know if we will be back. read more

Always nice and friendly but must say with the last few visits with out of town visitors, Troll's has let us down. I would say the food prep has dropped in my expectation and the service has been poor. Maybe they are just too busy to handle the numbers. Stopped in for lunch while waiting for the ferry. We had the fish and chips. They were tasty and a decent size portion but didn't break the bank. Halibut is the most expensive (common anywhere you go) but we had haddock and it was very good. We've eaten breakfast here as well which was also good. The staff is friendly and welcoming. Linda was particularly pleasant when we visited. Worthwhile to stop in if you are in the Horseshoe Bay Area and looking for breakfast or lunch. read more

The fish and chips are good. On both the haddock and the halibut, the batter was a good thickness, golden brown, and the fish inside moist. The portions are large. The chowder is not worth your time. It's bland, over-thickened and floury, almost the consistency of thin mashed potatoes. The "Manhattan-style" chowder is just the white chowder plus a little tomato juice, which makes it less bland, but it's not a proper tomato-based chowder. If you wince at the high prices, remember that what you're mainly paying for is the convenience of having a warm, dry place within walking distance of the ferry, where you can sit and receive fast service. We'll be back for more fish and chips the next time we have a long wait. read more
