Went to the takeout window, instead of the actual restaurant. Before you order, they will tell you how long it will take to get your for. When I got there, it was going to take 30 minutes. There was about 5 people in front of me so not sure why it was that long. I decided to order anyways. Got some haddock fish and chips from Troll's. The fish was moist but the outside wasn't as crispy as I like it and the fries were soft. Next time I will go into the restaurant and see how that is. read more

My friends and I were visiting Horseshoe Bay on Victoria Day, and we were told we had to check out Troll's for food. We had a fairly large group, and they normally don't take reservations, but there wasn't a long wait at all, and our host was very engaging in keeping us updated on how things were. We made it there in time for happy hour, so a few of us ordered alcoholic beverages. I didn't have any, but was told the selection they had on tap was pretty good. I ended up ordering a ginger beer, which wasn't on the menu, but our server talked to the bartender and was able to get me a glass, so that was great. The majority of our group were vegetarian / vegan, so many of us ended up ordering the Troll's Vegetarian Burger, and the Portobello Mushroom Burger. Both burgers were found to be delicious, although it should be noted, the vegetarian patty crumbled quite easily. The burgers came with fries on the side, or yam fries at an additional price. Personally, I preferred the yam fries. The portions to the food were fairly large and we were all quite full by the end of it. All in all, good experience and I'd definitely come back again. read more

I was driving my friend to the ferry and we missed the 1:15 ferry by 10 minutes and had some time to kill. We decided to check out this place since the patio was bustling with people and we hadn't had lunch yet. I loved our server! She was so friendly, warm, and beautiful. Although she forgot our substitution of Caesar salad instead of fries, maybe she could tell we secretly craved more carbs. We had a salad, clam chowder, calamari, and shrimp sandwich between two people. The Manhattan style clam chowder was really not to my liking but my friend thought it was average. The other food here was good. Calamari I would definitely order again and my preggy friend said the salad hit the right spot! I thought the shrimp sandwich was refreshing and really liked the cocktail sauce it came with. The patio area was nice, clean, and I was able to tie my puppy on the other side. There was a heat lamp on which felt really nice because it was chilly and our summer is never coming read more

Local west van resident and wanted what I thought would be classic diner comfort food from long established restaurant. Pure garbage quality, ordered fish and chips and a clubhouse sandwich, pretty basic stuff but overcooked, bland and all bread, little protein in both meals. Overpriced and filthy. Tourist trap, go to Olive and Anchor next door. read more

Setting: The setting is great, has a beautiful view. And the restaurant is pretty large, great for groups. Service/ food. - We asked what the soup special was (we didnt have the menu at this time) and it was clam chowder, once it came in it had bacon in, (I am a veggie and normally when I get this soup in richmond it doesn't have bacon) and once we got our soup I asked the server she said yes there is, I told her I couldn't eat it, (we got an entree size, but looked at my friend and said "but your good with it right?" but didn't apologize or really care and walked off. It wasn't until after my friend has asked if it possible to get it without bacon, she said no. She said she would ask the manager if she could get it taken off and did end up asking her manager to get it taken of the bill which they did. But it was a bit unpleasant since I had lost my appetite. My friend did enjoy his cod burger tho! Tip to you. Read the fine print read more

Great menu. Enjoyed the ability to upgrade to 1/2 yam fries and 1/2 Caesar salad. Halibut was warm and flaky. Good location in Horseshoe Bay! read more

Pros: The location and views can't be beat. If you can snag an outdoor table, you're golden. Cons: They stop serving brunch at 10:30am on Sunday. Like, wtf?! Don't they know people live for brunch on the weekends? It's hard to believe people want to eat fish & chips or chowder at 10:30am. Anyway, service was friendly and we ended up relaxing at our patio table for a bit. Since it was still early, our only breakfast option was the bacon and eggs, since it's served all day. Eggs were cooked well and bacon was crispy, but overall, it was a boring disappointing breakfast. We saw a few of our neighbors feasting on omelettes and eggs benny, but we wouldn't know what that's like.... read more

As a child some 50 years ago, a big treat for the family would be to drive to Horseshoe Bay and order their always excellent Fish and Chips. Decades later my family and I found ourselves in Horseshoe Bay and I isuggested we go to Troll's for their legendary Fish and Chips. Though it was a busy summer Sunday we were seated fairly quickly but with the caveat that we would likely have to wait 30 - 40 minutes for our main courses. Three of us ordered the 2 piece Cod and Chips meal at about $23. Less than ten minutes later the food was delivered to our table. What happened to the 30 minute wait? On the positive side the servings were big (as they should be given the price), the cod was fresh tasting, the coleslaw was fine, the fries were good and... unfortunately everything else was pretty much downhill. The batter was not at all crisp - in fact it was soggy. It was obvious the pieces of fish had been pre-cooked (possibly hours before) and then reheated in the microwave just prior to serving. Guys, what happened to the 30 - 40 minute wait for our food? We were happy to wait that long if excellent, perfectly fried fish was the result. And not to nitpick but the tartar sauce was terrible. Did you run out of your homemade tartar sauce and send a kitchen hand down to the local super market to buy the cheapest, nastiest brand of bottled sauce on the shelf. Yuck. It was cloyingly - almost sickeningly - sweet with a chemical after taste, surely this wasn't the tartar sauce I remember from 50 years before? All of us ignored the tartar sauce after one taste. I'll still go back to Trolls the next time I find myself in Horseshoe Bay, but I'll demand freshly fired fish and will tell the server to leave the tartar sauce in the kitchen. read more

We stopped by for breakfast on Saturday morning. We chose a table outside in the patio overlooking the amazing Horseshoe Bay view. There's a heater on the ceiling and it got a little toasty at times. The two of us shared the fisherman's breakfast which included French toasts, and we added a side order of vanilla yogurt. There was so much food that we couldn't finish everything. The service was good, but the food took a while to come out. We could see that a lot of people who were eating twere going to take the ferry later on. read more

We had a good experience here. We left Seattle early in the morning and drove through Vancouver on our way to Whistler. We were looking for a place for lunch and realized Horseshoe Bay might be it for a while. So we pulled off the highway and found this place. I ordered a chicken wrap and the option for half fries/half caesar salad. It was great! My hubby liked his fish and chips too - the piece of fish was huge! Service was friendly and prompt! read more

Fantastic Manhattan clam chowder! They're generous with clams and vegetables. I would say the chowder could be thinned down so it's more soupy and less like a sauce, but I can't complain about the taste! I appreciate abundant window seating, as well! read more

We thought this was a great place to stop have a nice meal to enjoy since it was pouring outside and the menu looked pretty good. It had a cozy ambience but service and food was pretty frustrating. We didnt get our drinks (just soft drinks) for about 15 minutes. Then it took 45 minutes to bring a caesar salad out that I wanted to start with. The rest of our food was brought out at the same time (crab dip on the appetizer menu and fish tacos) at the same time. Took another 15 min of sitting there after we finished eating to find our server and ask for the bill. Food was barely warm when we got it and we ended up just filling up on the nacho chips. Will not be returning. read more

Couldn't figure out why this place is called "Troll's." Obviously not because they troll for your fish meal. According to our server, all the fish is frozen. And also not because you are served by diminutive beings with pointy hats. Annnnnyway, this spot is more like a family restaurant that serves beer. Conveniently located next to the ferry, we tried out their fish and chips. The traditional cod & chips was just okay. Not flaky in the least, the cod seemed kind of mushy. I had the haddock which was much better. Sleeves of beer were $6.50, which seemed kind of high to me, considering the setting and all, but perhaps that is the price of beer in family restaurants? The place seems very popular with the locals and fairly busy for midweek. Lots of TVs abound showing both ice hockey and football. However, I didn't appreciate an interior view of the ladies restroom from my booth seat. Next time we take the ferry out, we'll try a different option! read more

Standby spot to grab a bite at the ferry. The Trolls wrap was super yummy and very fresh. DH stated that the two piece fish and chips was :"Too much, but one piece would have been too little." Outstanding fries, great people watching (*it helped that on this particular day, the North Shore Fire Department was playing with their hoses across the way in the park.) *I'm going to leave this statement as is for the ladies (and some gents!) read more

I came here as a visitor/tourist and was not let down. Sensational view, and it was busy while we were there but we didn't have to wait long for food at all. Actually, they said the wait would be about 45 mins but it came in less than 10 mins to our surprise. I LOVED the halibut that I got. One piece was more than enough and the batter was awesome. There was a flavour to it, I hadn't had fish & chips like that before. The chips were the weak link here, but even they weren't that bad. The tastiness of the fish more than made up for the crappy-ish fries. Again, I wish that I lived on the west coast so that I could come back for more. I'll just have to live off the memories! read more

Awesome halibut and chips! Coffee not so good, but drink the beer instead (widowmaker) which was also awesome! Will definitely come back!

A good spot to people watch and pass the time. We stopped by here while waiting for our ferry. We were quite early so took our time choosing a spot. Boyfriend wanted something classic and fish based so we stopped at Troll's. The host took a few moments to get to us, I think we must have arrived just post lunch rush, but we were seated promptly enough. We perused the menu for a couple of minutes and decided to share the salmon and chips and the red chowder. The food arrived pretty fast and was a very large portion! I was glad I'd only ordered the one piece fish! Boyfriend's chowder was in a giant bowl filled with various seafood - I found some bites tasted fresher than others but overall it was quite good. The salmon in my salmon and chips was well cooked and the batter was fresh, crisp, and not too greasy. The chips were fries - they were fine, crispy and freshly cooked but they sure weren't chips... the quest continues!! We enjoyed our brief downtime at Troll's, it's great for a quick stop in if you're hungry for some decent food and want friendly service to go along with it. read more

Trolls used to be our family favourite restaurant for fish and chips and special occasions However today found the old ambience lacking The decor is dated, still same as we used 20 years ago Service was good but I had to send my breakfast back as at first mouthful the bacon was cold Brought me back supposed fresh plate , bacon /scrambled eggs and tomato still all cold Toast was fine I didn't have the heart to return it again There were only 2 other tables occupied at this time so kitchen was not busy But was tempted to share input with management who were seated just inside the door The Troll magic is slipping This restaurant still has huge potential with location and all the new development close by read more

Was excited to try this long term establishment, but likely won't return. Family and I ordered halibut and chips. Fish was fair, but fries were undercooked. Kids portion was same size as adults for half the price (so either kids get a bonus or adults pay too much). Kids received a fillable kids menu, but they don't hand out crayons or anything to write/colour with. Staff were kind. Overall, not bad, but definitely not great. read more

Yummy burger, good service, no complaints! The fries are really good. Hand cut and fried to perfect crispness.

Going to Troll's and loving it requires discernment and perhaps repeat business. The truth is that this is more of a pub or family restaurant and the meal isn't perfect every time. That is what holds me back from giving it a 5 even though we love it and gladly uphold a family tradition of eating here (that stretches back decades). However, the ratio is a positive one. We come to Troll's often, and 90% of the time the fish is great and the fries are crisp. The server's are friendly (though sometimes understandably busy when it is packed). I have enjoyed soups, wraps and pasta here also. The view is fantastic from almost any seat in the house and it is a great drive for out-of-town guests. That being said, occasionally we have a pc. of fish that isn't as high of quality as previously. The kitchen has never had a problem replacing an order for us if anyone in our party was unhappy (graciously of course). I haven't found this improves the matter so I am wondering if some days the 'catch' is better than others and if it also somewhat depends on the type of fish you order. Overall we adore Trolls, and you are likely to see us dining inside or on the patio people watching and about to walk our meal off by the sea. Tip: Park behind the restaurant and walk through the back door to the front or just keep circling the street, a parking spot WILL open eventually. read more

Was there just before noon today for lunch. Service was friendly, food mediocre. Overheard 2 servers discussing the fact that so many tables were dirty and what was going on, that early in the day it should have been spotless, it was not. Had I walked into the washroom before eating and not after I would probably have walked out. They were filthy, will not be returning - this place is not what it used to be. read more

This is a burger/ fish'n'chips place. The food was good. Their decaf coffee tasted like coffee. Service was prompt. Washrooms were clean. DRY... that's the only word to describe their food here. Sandwich, roast beef dip, wing, salad...all very mediocre and "Very Dry." Salad is dried out, tugged in spring salad from grocery box placed in the fridge since this morning, or even worse - last night. Food in general just dry. Artichoke & crab dip has barely any artichokes or any visible crab meat or fiber; it's just an entire jar of lard :( Fried fish & oysters r okay..sometimes over burnt - I would rate it a mediocre 3, not horrible, not spectacular; I would have made better fried food at home if I dont might touching the grease. The only thing I might have enjoyed a bit was the yam fries. For the money value, I would have gone to the nearby restaurants - a little bit pricier, but at least it's a real restaurant. Ps. No clue how would anyone rate this place a 4 or 5. If they did, it's totally just based on atmosphere. We stopped here for lunch while waiting for our ferry. This place was packed, and luckily the wait was only 15 minutes for us. However, while we were being seated, the hostess (rather curtly) announced that our food order would be at least 45 minutes from the time of ordering. We ordered the cod and chips, and my little one had the mac n cheese which was declared by her to be the 'worst mac n cheese she ever had'. I tasted it and would agree with this statement. Our food arrived - as promised, 45 minutes later, and it was actually pretty good. Do NOT go here. I ordered their Seafood Chowder which was watery, flavourless and had some canned clams and frozen carrots in it. Then I had their Tempura Prawns. While I gave the PLACE five stars, this is NOT a five star restaurant. It has some amazing qualities that put it well above other restaurants, but by virtue of being the main tourist stop in Horseshoe Bay, it is virtually always busy, full, packed, crazy! It is a great locals spot - but the volume lends more to a diner kind of atmosphere. The views are insane! Ferry one way, ocean, marina, mountains looming over top on the other side - lots of kids, families inside. Two of us had the fish and chips - said they were great. I had the fish stew - and was blown away - for $15 it was a huge bowl, probably over half full with fish, shrimp, prawns hanging on the edge - when I say half full, i mean that if they drained all of the liquid from the bowl, it would still be packed with seafood! Great! That's five stars right there! Everyone was envious! I haven't been here at night, but can see lots of drawings of locals having wine and beer, so imagine that it becomes much less touristy, more local bar hangout at night. If you're going to be in Horseshoe Bay, this is the place to go! read more

Not a bad place for fish and chips but probably the worst breakfast I've had almost anywhere. After missing a morning ferry I've gone in a few times for breakfast, but I've made that mistake for the last time. I've had omelettes that are over cooked on the outside, while undercooked on the inside. They have home fries that everyone at our table left uneaten and somewhat edible toast. It's a great location and the staff is usually friendly and helpful, but they are in desperate need of a complete breakfast overall before I'll be back there before lunch. read more
