I have been wanting to try this place and I finally got to! Let me tell you... it did not disappoint! I came here during lunch hours. Parking in the area can be a bit tricky but this place offers valet for $6 which makes everything easier. This place is so freaking cute! We sat outside and everything was so beautiful. The ambiance and decor is stunning especially since it was such a nice sunny day. Waitstaff here was super friendly and attentive with our group. We never saw empty glasses! To start off, our group ordered the suppli al telefono and the fritto misto. Both dishes were delicious! They had us fighting for the last pieces!! For my entree I ordered the margherita pizza. The ingredients on it tasted fresh and the crust was perfectly crispy without being tough. The pizza is also a decent size so I was definitely full afterwards. Based on food and service, I'd probably give this place 3 stars but a couple things pushed it into the 2-star range. The pros: the restaurant is very nice inside and well decorated. Tables are not too crowded and it's not too loud. Overall nice ambience. Service was also fast and our waiters were attentive. The meh: the food. We had the margherita pizza, chicken parm, and lamb ragu. The lamb ragu and chicken parm were good though not so amazing I'd be rushing back. The pizza was downright bad - some chain places have better crust than this. It's very rare I don't finish a pizza (and it was a small pizza at that) and I didn't finish this one. The cons: the valet is $6 which was annoying. In a town where most places are complimentary valet, it's a bit ridiculous they charge $6 for valet. But what I found REALLY outrageous is this place puts a "non-cash surcharge" on your check - basically they pass on their merchant credit card fees of 3.5% to the customer! I've never seen a restaurant do this and it's quite tacky for them to do, especially since the prices here aren't super cheap either. Maybe if they were some small mom and pop shop with super cheap food to begin with, I'd understand. But they are not. Overall, I probably will not be returning. The annoyances could be overlooked if the food was absolutely amazing - which it was not. There's much better Italian in town. read more

What an excellent Easter Brunch we had at Sofia! We sat in the patio which is fully covered, with exposed brick and lots of plants. They keep it very cool with fans and A/C. This time I asked for their variations on the old fashioned and went with the Midwest OF. On the specials menu I wanted something protein forward so I opted for the beef short rib and was not disappointed! Excellent flavor, with awesome colors with the carrots and mashed potatoes. MY significant other (can anyone come up with a better name for adults who are in a long term relationship but aren't married or engaged, PLEASE) and I went to dinner here because she had seen it and it was new and nearby, Nice Decor, small bar with limited seating but it was pretty busy with what looked like people just having drinks and apps. There was no wait for tables in the dining room. About 3/4 full on a week night about 7pm. The food was good, not great with small "Euro" portions and relatively expensive for what we received. Bread is not provided for no charge. An Italian restaurant that doesn't serve bread complimentary? Strangely offensive to some deep part of my Italian food loving soul. All sides are Ala Carte as well. Even the wine by the glass was too pricey for the varieties offered by the glass (pushing bottles of course). Our server did a good job but had too many tables and was very busy. I imagine it is still hard to fill positions. We had cappuccinos and shared a desert and again it was good and pricey. Gorgeous restaurant! We came here as part of a birthday group of ten on a Saturday and felt well taken care of! Service was great, they stayed on top of our needs and beverages were refilled/checked on quite frequently. The place is huge and has a covered outdoor section that is great during good weather. Absolutely loved the greenery decorating the entire place. As in with many other Italian restaurants, the lighting is dim which definitely made it harder to read the menu sometimes. The food was good though it did not blow me away unfortunately. I loved their pesto bucatini and the affogato was absolutely delicious! Prosciutto pizza was very good as well, the ricotta cheese gives it a tad sweeter taste but it complimented the dish quite well. We also got the shrimp dish and it tasted a bit too out of the sea for me. Pasta definitely tastes fresh and you can tell it was made in house. All in all a good experience for sure. This place is on the pricier side, and drinks are more or less 15-20 dollars a pop but they're strong and the ambiance is very romantic. read more

Very romantic/classy vibe (which my friend and I did not know before showing up in leggings--but it was fine LOL) at Trattoria Sofia. The food was delicious, especially the two pasta dishes we ordered. The Modena Cup cocktail was also great. My only complaints were that it was very expensive for the portions you get (although arguably worth it if you want to splurge on a fancy dinner) and the valet in front of the restaurant cost money, even though they didn't offer a non-valet option! My husband and I went to the Valentine's Day event here. WOW, they really did the place up. There was a gorgeous display of balloon and a light-up "love" (see photo). They were fully booked for Valentine's night and they were busy. Unfortunately this meant we had to wait. Despite having a reservation, we waited for about 30 minutes after our reservation time to be seated. They did however periodically bring around complimentary hors d'ouevres for everyone standing and waiting. For dinner we did their fixe prix menu. We had fried cheese balls for a the appetizer followed by cacio e pepe. Both of these were okay but nothing special. It seemed they had more interesting items on their regular menu. For the main course I had a flounder dish which was really good. I think this entree was a special offering because I don't see it on their regular menu. Birthday girl saw pics and wanted to try a few items. Ricotta Di Pecora - ricotta, honey, fried garlic, peperoncini Calabrese with toasted ciabatta. Cavalo Nero - Tuscan kale, smoked chili, garlic pecorino dressing, toasted parmesan breadcrumbs, Parmigiano Reggiano, basil, mint Fritto Misto - fried squid and shrimp, capers, peperoncini Calabrese, parsley, lemon, paparika and saffron aioli Bucatini Alla Pesto Siciliano - bucatini, Sicilian pesto, whipped ricotta, pecorino, toasted pistachio, mint, basil, lemon zest, peperoncini Casarecce Alla Norma - spicy tomato sauce, fried eggplant, peperoncini, ricotta salata and toasted breadcrumbs Everything was amazing. Sunday afternoon visit, arrived at 4:30 PM and the parking lot was empty, but signs said, "Valet Only", so they have no self-parking at the restaurant, if you don't want valets in your car, you must park on the street. Since my wife had knee surgery 4 days before I parked in the valet and just walked in. Horrible first impression. I'm so tired of these forced valet parking in space close to the restaurant while letting customers find parking on the street. Once we were seated things got much better. Service was vey good, our waiter was helpful and not intrusive. We order a bottle of wine to start, then selected the HRW menu. When we decided to select a different wine after the first bottle, they didn't have it in stock, which was disappointing, but survivable. Food was excellent! I had the roasted beets for the starter, Bucatini for the main and Olive Oil cake for dessert. I've had a lot of beet salads (I love beets) and I'd have to say this is one of the best I've had! The addition of apples to the mix was a new twist for me and it completed the cheese and beets very well. The Bucatini was very oily, in fact, over oily. Great flavors, but it was swimming in olive oil which took away from the overall taste and presentation. If you're planning to use a credit card, be ready for a 3-1/2% premium added to your bill. Prices on the menu are CASH PRICES, so don't be fooled. Another irritant, just include the fee in the menu prices so no one gets a surprise. read more

I recently returned to Trattoria Sofia to try their brunch offering during Houston Restaurant Weeks. Once again, we left a bit disappointed. The risotto croquettes were great as a first course, but my actual entree (margarita pizza) was pretty plain. Let it be known, the pizza was no DiGiorno, but it paled to some of the other pizza ovens in Houston. While there were no surprises on the bill like there were during my first visit, the visit was pretty upsell heavy. From a heavy pitch for the drinks to some steep add-ons (one of the add-ons for a $25 two-course brunch was $30!) to a bread course and a dessert course, Sofia went hard for my credit card. With so many new Italian restaurants in the Loop, I think it'll be a while before I give Trattoria Sofia a third try. read more

This place is 4.5 stars for me. But took away a star to reflect on some low notes- Their cacio a pepe was lackluster as well as their pesto pasta (tried my cousins and siters pastas). Unfortunately I've tried much better at other places. Another thing I didn't like was how at some point they dimmed the lighting by alot (it wasn't a slow gradual thing, it's was as if half the lights went out). None of us should've had to use our phones for lighting to be able to read the menus. The great- We had a party of 10, and they seated us before our reservation time (grateful for that, we arrived too early lol). We went on a saturday and it wasn't too busy when we arrived at 5:30. Our server was fantastic and I wish I could remember his name so I could specifically mention him. The Prosciutto pizza I got was fantastic. For one they did not skimp out on the Prosciutto, the entire pizza was a covered in it. We got a few desserts and loved all of them. I as well got one drink for myself (jasmine fizz which in the pics) and tried my cousins drink (spiced ginger buck). The ingredients for my drink were intriguing on paper, but didn't taste unique to me. It was tasty though and of course i finished it anyways. Ginger buck was better than the jasmine fizz. It was my sister's bday and they gave her a complimentary dessert which was really nice of them. Overall I would definitely return here! This place has a very romantic vibe with the lighting (I liked the lighting more when we arrived vs when they dimmed it) and ambiance, especially out in the terrace. I was completely surprised by the restaurant. I had been looking for a really good Italian spot that was authentic and after multiple tries I finally came to Trattoria Sofia. This was exactly what I wanted, the food was great and and the service was helpful and friendly while not being overbearing. FYI I believe this restaurant had valet parking. We started with the Poplo Arrosto (Woodfire-Roasted Octopus) which was confidently some of the best octopus I have had before, it was perfectly cooked, tasted fresh and wasn't overly chewy. The dish was complimented with a tomato based sauce, small vegetables, and a pesto sauce which all in all completed the dish. I think this is a must try. For entrees me and my date ended up getting the Bucatini Alla Pesto Siciliano and the Ragu D'Agnello pastas. Starting with the Bucatini, this was such a light and refreshing pasta with strong flavor. The pesto was so good and while there was no protein they provide you the option to add some. As for the Ragu D'Agnello, it is a lamb Ragu tomato based sauce, it had an amazing hearty flavor and lots of pieces of lamb in the dish. I can recommend both of these pastas! Finishing with dessert, we got the Cherry Gelato which was so flavorful and reminded me of Korean bing su (iykyk), it was really good and the server recommended we pair it with the Olive Oil Cake which we did! The flavors of the cake were not too strong or sweet which I like, and when paired with the gelato, it was perfect and added good texture! Service was great, they checked in often and gave recommendations for what is good and what goes well together! I came here for HRW The ambiance and decorations are lit, and the service is good. The ricotta was good with crispy bread with honey drizzled ricotta. It was like a party in my mouth, dude. The beet salad was also delicious, with refreshing fruits and beets tossed in balsamic. All the flavors mixed together perfectly. (only knock is that the salad was kind of small) For my main course, I had the bucatini pesto. It was something different, with a nutty flavor that I really enjoyed. The pistachio in it was a nice touch. I also really liked the thick noodles yum yum. I also tried the cacio e pepe, which was good but I enjoyed the bucatini more. The only thing that brought this place down a notch was the extra fees. They charged me an extra fee for paying with a credit card, which is ridiculous. Who uses cash these days, bro?! And on their restaurant week menu, there were extra charges for this and that, even dessert. I don't know how I feel about that. Overall, this is a great restaurant with amazing food and service. We made reservations here a few weeks prior for a family birthday dinner. We had about 9 people and upon entering the restaurant we were told our table outside was getting set up. First of all, it was literally over 90 degrees and half of our group was over 65 years old and definitely cannot tolerate that kind of heat. If they had told us that from the beginning when the reservation was first made we would have definitely cancelled it and gone elsewhere. Luckily, some of us are small and they managed to seat us at their booth that usually only fits like 6 people. But for those booking for larger reservations, make sure you double check because it is nearly impossible to even walk from my car to the restaurant in the weather we've been having. Once the seating fiasco was figured out everything went smoothly. We had an awesome waiter who was very quick to get things started and memorized every one of our orders and got it all correct! For appetizers we had the bread basket ($8), polpo arrosto: octopus ($28), fritto misto ($24). For the size of our group he recommended two of each appetizer since their portions are on the smaller side. We all loved the octopus and fritto misto, the octopus was super tender and flavorful and the fritto misto was fried perfectly. I would probably pass on the overpriced bread basket. We ordered a variety of their entrees: margherita and prosciutto pizza, cacio e pepe, bucatini alla pesto, pan fried shrimp ($38), roasted fish ($42), tuscan kale salad. Overall we were not very impressed by the entrees. The cacio e pepe was a little bland and flat. The bucatini was the better of the two. And the fish and shrimp were pricey for the amount they give you. The pizza crust was pretty good but the prosciutto pizza basically was just a bunch of prosciutto on top, which also made it very hard to eat as one bite took a whole piece of prosciutto off at once Overall, service was great and so were the appetizers. Wow. That's really all I can say about this place. My wife and I went for dinner on our 22nd anniversary, and the staff was extremely accommodating. We were sat almost immediately and given a handwritten card celebrating our anniversary from the staff. We were offered sparking water with an ice bucket next to the table to keep it cold. That was an excellent touch. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and personable. When I was torn between two wines, he offered me a tasting of each with as well as his personal recommendation, which I ended up going with. Our food was AMAZING. We had the bread basket that came with two types of bread - a standard Italian and an Olive Bread, which, with the OVOO, was so tasty. Then we moved on to the grilled octopus appetizer. Perfectly cooked, juicy, not rubbery in anyway. The sauce was delicious. For our entrees, my wife had the pesto with scollops, and I had the lamb shank. The pasta was cooked al dente, and the pesto was on point; the scallops cooked to perfection. The lamb shank was on a different level. The sauce/glaze was incredible. The meat was juicy, falling off the bone. The polenta, mixed with a little of the glaze was very satisfying. We weren't going to order dessert, because, honestly, we were so full from the amazing food, but the staff, again, were so generous in bringing us a little raspberry panna cotta as a gift on our anniversary. It was a perfect end to the meal. We will most definitely be coming back, and have already recommended it to friends. We happened to come during restaurant week so we took advantage of their 3 course deal they had going on. Everything we had was delicious! I definitely recommend the ricotta di pecora (whipped ricotta with honey and ciabatta appetizer) - it is heavenly. My husband had the margherita DOC (pizza appetizer) and it was enough to feed 2 people honestly! We both had pasta plates which I ended up taking half home. The desserts were also very delicious and moist! All the staff from the host, to the manager and our server were amazing and so attentive. They paid attention to our needs and the manager was making sure to go around checking on everyone! The only downside is parking but all parking in the heights is terrible. What we got: -Crostini di gamberi arrabiata: 2/5. Looked very promising and crispy, but it was super soggy. -Oysters: 1/5. I didn't like any of the sauces nor were the oysters anything special. -Prosciutto pizza: 4/5. One of the better items we got! I love the combination of sweet and savory so prosciutto and spicy honey is difficult to mess up. -Bucatini alla pesto siciliano: 1/5. Tasted like really soggy udon and had very little flavor. Some salt or seasoning please!!!! I am begging... -Ragu d'agnello: 1/5. The pasta was overcooked and very soggy. There was no texture in this dish as well. -Crispy potatoes: 3/5. A minute or so the hostess came and took over, the manager stated to the host we checked in and we are going to seat at table so and so and it should be ready in ten mins. Twenty mins passed and I decided to check in with the host. The host was so rude, stated the manager does not know what he is talking about, and my table was not ready. We wait an additional 15 minutes and decided we wanted to stay in the bar area. Once we were seated, we ordered beverages. The manager came back and asked us what happened, I mentioned the host said our table was not ready and we just decided we wanted to sit at the bar. I did not want to make it a big deal. Upon walking in, you'll see a water fountain and complimentary matchboxes. I decided to sit out on the terrace, which is air-conditioned. The indoor seating has trees situated in between booths, a bread table, and gorgeous mood lighting. There is light jazz music playing over the speakers that add to the calm and classy ambiance. The calamari was soft and zesty with lemon highlighting the creamy dipping sauce. The bread was soft and easy to dip in the garlic and tomato butter. The cacio e pepe had the perfect amount of black peppercorns and fresh parmesan cheese. The melted cheese made the pasta gooey and savory. The bucatini alla pesto siciliano had a dollop of cream cheese in the center which, when mixed in, created a creamy and flavorful carb-induced coma. Came here for Houston restaurant week '22 lunch menu which offered a pretty expansive selection and multiple add-on options for $25. I think the HRW menu definately offers good value here compared to normal prices and you will leave full. 4 stars for HRW experience, if I had to pay full price on these same menu items I would have to lower to 3. Lovely little Italian restaurant in the heights! Except parking was tricky and crowded if you don't valet... Anyways, i enjoyed all the food. Service was nice. Only thing i would complain about is that the restaurant was a little hot. Maybe it's because there's an open kitchen nearby and the patio door is constantly opening and closing for outdoor seating area... So, Lower the AC please! The pasta for the most part were all good. You could tell they hand make their pasta and quality is exceptional. Even the bread and dip/olive oil was delicious! They also serve steak. The new york strip special was perfectly cooked. A dinner delight! A green gala! The pesto bucatini was quite pleasing and the cocktails rocktailed my socktails off, particularly the modena cup and the sicilian. Some say Sicily is the Texas of Italy and their use of Mezcal inclines me to agree. Service was kind and ambiance was architecturally thrilling. read more

Beautiful Italian restaurant in houston!!! The interior is so classy vintage feel. The service was so nice and accommodating. Lots of seating. The food is sooo delicious! My favorite was the Polpo octopus. Wood fire toasted. Came with a good amount, very crispy and a hint of a cinnamon taste. Great for me because i'm a big fan of cinnamon. Wish it came with more potatoes. The bruschetta was very good and creamy. Very fresh minty taste too. We got the bucatini as the entree and it was soo good and flavorful. Agree with most of the reviews. I really wanted to like it. It was ok but we certainly weren't wowed. I get it's Italian lol but the menu is so carb heavy. At one point we were going to order pizza, pasta and a sandwich. The pizza was excellent but rather small. The calamari appetizer ($24) was also small and not impressive, especially the sauce. Service was meh. Hostess was surly. Waiter started out great but later disappeared. We were going to order more food but he was MIA and we were pouring our own wine the whole time. Lastly, it's just too expensive for what it is. Not sure about an Italian restaurant charging $8 for bread. Wine list was very limited. Patio is really lovely though. read more
