I came to happy hour at Trattoria Appia in Providence which runs from 3 to 5 PM, and they have 50% off select menu items. They also have $8 martinis on Fridays. We sat at the bar the bartender had good service but was a little slow with following up We started with calamari, rosemary fries, and a Caesar salad. And then they made us a special cherry lemon drop that was honestly SO good. The drinks were definitely the star of the show 10 out of 10! The rosemary fries were an 8 out of 10, the calamari was a 7 out of 10, but the Caesar salad was only a 4 out of 10 for me needed more dressing. Super underwhelming. I ordered the $38 frutti di mare and felt completely cheated by what I received. The entire dish had only one shrimp, no clams at all, and mostly calamari with chunks of salmon--which did not flow with the dish or taste like it belonged in a traditional frutti di mare. Went to Federal Hill in Providence today for a late lunch/early dinner to Trattoria Appia. This restaurant did not disappoint. We were greeted at the door by our waiter who was incredible and highly attentive. He offered suggestions and answered all of my questions. I have a nut allergy and asked if the basil pesto on the egg plant parmigiana had nuts and he initially said no and then said "but let me confirm that with the kitchen" and he immediately went to ask the chef. He was right and said I made a good choice for dinner. My friends also ordered what they wanted, an appetizer and some drinks. They were also happy with their choices. All of the pasta and dishes are homemade with locally sourced food items. The appetizer was delicious, my egg plant with arugula salad was fresh and extremely flavorful and the best part, every item on the menu from 3 PM to 5 PM is half price and martinis are $8.00. On Wednesday they have 1/2 price bottles of wine. The atmosphere in the restaurant gave a very nice trattoria vibe and was perfect for talking, catching up and enjoying the food and wine. After dinner we all decided to order a dessert which I don't normally order but I was glad I did. I'm a big affogato fan and this was one, was perfect and not overindulgent. The absolute perfect size. I am definitely returning to this restaurant. The only down fall is that the parking in Federal Hill can be a little tricky. We attended a rehearsal dinner a few days ago. The wait staff focused on reordering drinks from the bar. No food orders were taken from a choice fixed menu, so it should have run like clock work...not even an appetizer or even bread was placed on the table for 1 1/2 hours, even after the hosts repeatedly asked the manager to take food orders. What a delightful dinner. The restaurant is beautifully done, the lighting and art work on the walls make for an aesthetically pleasant dining experience. For starters we had the crispy calamari which was perfectly cooked. Lots of flavor. For our entree I had the Bistecca Griglia and my girlfriend had the gnocchi al Forno. Both entrees were absolutely delicious. Cooked perfectly and p packed with flavor. To end the night we shared a tiramisu which was probably one of the best tiramisu I have had. I've eaten at Trattoria Appia several times, it's always been a great place to eat...until today. We arrived a bit early, 3:30 on Valentine's Day after coming from a Providence game. The only reason I add that is that the Atwells Ave restaurants know that when the game lets out of the Amp, then the crowds are on their way. We decided on the prix fixe menu - a strawberry arugula salad, a pasta and scallops appetizer, a mushroom crusted steak or stuffed lobster and a dessert choice of pistachio affogato or chocolate mousse. Our waiter had no idea what was on the menu. Like....none. It was a prix fixe menu, there were only four items on it. My wife ordered a limoncello spritz - it was a menu option. An Aperol spritz was brought instead - the wrong drink - but fine, she drank it no biggie. The salad was very sweet - the goat cheese was excellent. The appetizer was absolutely tremendous. Fresh pasta with a sage brown butter sauce. We ordered the steak - it was designed to split. We ordered it medium rare. It came to us very well done - well overcooked. The edge pieces that we started with were acceptably rare, so we ate them, then realized how overcooked the rest was. We told the waiter, he didn't seem to care much, said he was sorry. My wife ordered the pistachio affogado for dessert. They "fogadd" about the affogado (espresso pour on top) it showed up bare. All in all a poor experience, and expensive. read more

The restaurant looks really nice, it has a nice bar area and those tables close to the street are really great view, but the service was very slow. Appetizers are all small and cold, we were sitting there for over an hour and the pasta we ordered was still not on the table. I don't know what's wrong but there were only a few cook in the restaurant and serving a few groups of people. I had the handmade black ribbon pasta and when I finally got it, part of the pasta was hot and part of them was already cold. I did not think that's a big deal at the beginning, but the pickled sauce was just warm and really strong. It got me to the bathroom immediately and kept sending me to the bathroom until 3 am. I was excited to try the newly improved Trattoria Appia, formerly Tarttoria Zooma, and my experience was delightful. I must commend D. for the excellent service. Overall, the food was average. We ordered crispy calamari, but it was quite bland, needing more seasoning and was a bit oily. The roasted beet with burrata was good but also lacked seasoning. My sister enjoyed her Caesar salad. For the main course, I chose the Fungi al Garganelli, which was supposed to include mushrooms, but they were unavailable, which was disappointing. I then ordered the Sacchetti, pasta shaped like a small purse or tortellini, but it lacked flavor and lobster. Conversely, the half chicken leg was delicious. Horrible service received during 2024 Christmas Eve dinner. We ordered the Dinner Special 'Feast of Seven Fishes' which has 3 Courses (1st Course of appetizer, soup; 2nd Course; and lastly Main Course). The 1st Course was served in a timely manner. Sadly, the calamari was way TOO SALTY and dried up. The lobster bisque was served on a curved plate and only a had a only 2-3 spoonfuls of the actual bisque. Then it just became downhill. We were made to wait 40 minutes for the 2nd Course to arrive on our table. It was an arugala salad and 4 SMALL pieces of scallops! It does not take long to make a salad and sear scallops! My partner was an executive chef for many years in NYC and Northern NJ and this was just absolutely an unacceptable wait time. The 3rd Course was spaghetti with mussels, clams and salmon. Fortunately enough it made its way to our table. We didn't think we could wait for it after the delay of the 2nd Course. The really annoying part of this experience is that our server never checked on table until the end to give us a check. He was too busy with his coworker at the bar taking selfies of themselves to post on social media. Mind you he kept passing by looking over -- knowing that it's been 40 minutes -- and our 2nd course hadn't been served. He was literally also avoiding patrons still not having received their orders for some reason. By simply checking in and letting us know that the kitchen staff was backed up would've been an assurance of the delay. I'm pretty sure we're not the only ones who will be posting negative reviews on their Christmas Eve service. We were looking forward to visiting this place when we made the 7:00 pm reservation. But the service just destroyed it. So BOO to the "new" conversion to Trattoria Appia. My advice that if you stumble on this restaurant -- only order pizza. Food and drinks orders took a while to come out but the food was good once it did arrive, especially the calamari, baked salmon, and thin crust cheese pizza. As we walked into the restaurant we saw a lady making their famous homemade pastat (black ribbon this time, made with squid ink). The dining room was ample and full of artwork on every wall. We had the spaghettini con Polpette.... a declicious dish with pasta cooked perfectly al dente topped with their famous meatballs, house marinara, hand-dipped ricotta. Well, went on Christmas Eve it was busy but the service was slow, the bus person was more attentive than the server. The Lobster Bisque was cold the Calamari was over salted and lukewarm. The 2rd course is still yet to arrive and it has been 45 minutes since our Bisque and Calamari was served. When our waiter finally came over he informed us that the already limited menu was out of almost all the entree options (at 7:30!!) Only pasta and gnocchi options left. My husband and stopped in this weekend for the first time. I wish I had taken a picture of my dish! I ordered the "Sunday dinner" which is a Sunday special. It was a Saturday night and we did not have reservations so expected a wait but were seated promptly. I ordered a red sangria and was utterly disappointed. The ice was protruding over the rim and it was more juice than wine. See pic for 2 sips taken. It was gone in about 6. I wasn't going to say anything but my husband mentioned it to the server. She stated she had been working there for 3 years and they fill to the brim with ice every time. She could make me another but it would be exactly the same. I obviously declined. There was a couple seated nearby that had one and clearly it was not. My husband nodded toward her and she stated they were here long before us and it definitely was (they were seated about 5 min prior to us because we saw them walk in) so it wasn't that the ice melted but whatever. I'm just saying you can go to Capital Grille and pay $15 for a sangria in a larger glass with normal amount of ice, $12 at Il Fornello (pitcher for $38), $12 at Tavolo. Pretty much anywhere else in the hill will give you a full glass of sangria with normal amount of ice for the same or less. So perhaps skip the drinks and go to Venda (or anywhere else) before or after for a few. I ordered the lasagna with a meatball, and my husband ordered the chicken parm with gnocchi. Our food arrived before our silverware. The server promptly brought some over. I'm Italian and consider myself a good cook, we dine out a lot at Italian restaurants. I like to try them all but have my favorites. I can honestly say the lasagna was the best I've ever had. The pasta is made in house. It's wonderful and came out very hot. The meatball was also very good. Unfortunately the chicken parm came out room temp so my husband sent it back. He said the gnocchis were amazing. The chicken came back warmer but unfortunately was dry, tough, and overall just not enjoyable. Our server offered another dish and he opted for the lasagna which he also enjoyed. She seemed visibly annoyed and we noticed her muttering to a coworker. Perhaps it was about something else though. We were very full so skipped dessert. Typically I visit pastiche for dessert anyway. So typically drinking while on shift is frowned upon in most professions. I'm a nurse and have never worked I'm the restaurant industry so perhaps it is acceptable. We did notice our server and the owner drinking at the bar during our meal. I just thought it was odd as I've never witnessed this before in any upscale establishments. It wouldn't stop me from returning though. Food prices are reasonable. $10-14 for a drink is average. If my drink was not all ice I'd say it's fine. Perhaps a martini would be a better option if you actually want to enjoy a drink. The price of meals ranges from $18 to around $50. My lasagna was $26 I think and worth every penny. Expect to pay $3 for medium meatball which is also fair. Our check was about $75. We had a gift certificate for $40 that was given to me. It made the waste of $14 for the drink a little less sad. Overall food is good (except the chicken parm- for a good one visit Il Fornello in N. Providence). Drinks meh...Service good but not warm friendly good. Parking is shit. My husband ordered a chicken dish with prosciutto and we were surprised to receive a breaded chicken parm. Were yesterday's dishes bad ?
