Tratto is the restaurant in the Marker Hotel on Geary Street at Taylor. Note that the restaurant's direct entrance from Geary has steps. They do have a lift, but it's easiest to go further up Geary from the corner and enter via the hotel lobby. The third archway is step-free. The restaurant is to your left as you enter the lobby. "Family-style rustic Italian fare" is how they describe themselves. It's a bit pricey, but I think you do get what you pay for. On one recent visit I had the Pappardelle, and on another occasion the Lasagna. Both are served with Bolognese sauce, which is [chef's kiss] primo! The pappardelle was perfectlly al dente. The lasagna wasn't the the usual rectangle: it was spiral wrapped and stood on one end. Visually interesting, and it was excellent. I had the Caesar salad on one visit. It had a problem I seldom face myself: it was overdressed. Their dressing is good, and I'd probably get it again, but I might ask them to go light on the dressing. It had a topping of toasted breadcrumbs instead of croutons, which I liked. And of course anchovies. I love anchovies on a Caesar. Ambiance is casual. Service is friendly and attentive. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in the neighborhood. read more

I recently dined at Tratto and unfortunately had a disappointing experience. I had previously enjoyed their amazing pizza, so I was eager to return. However, upon arrival, I discovered that ownership had changed, which also resulted in a new menu that didn't include my favorite dish. With my heart set on pizza, I decided to order a salad instead, which, I must say, was quite good. Unfortunately, the service was less than stellar. The waitress was rude and overly insistent about what we should order, despite my clearly expressing that we were not interested in anything on the menu. While I appreciated the quality of the salad, the overall atmosphere was marred by the pushy service. We could've easily just left after sitting down and looking at the menu but decided to enjoy a salad and be on our way, so to be met with such pushy service of saying "why don't you order lasagna with the salad?" I've never been to a restaurant where my choice of what we order/lack of what I ordered was met with such rude tone. I will never come back to this place just based on this experience. We just stayed at the hotel this restaurant is connected to, after a long day of travel we ordered room service. We got the pesto gnocchi and garlic bread plate. The food had no taste except for salt. It was a major disappointment especially when we ordered $40 worth of food and due to fees and automatic gratuity had to pay $74. Not to mention why charge a room service fee if they just bring the food in take out containers?? If I am paying for those fees with automatic gratuity I expect plates and silverware. I am a big foodie and I dont mind paying high prices if the food is worth it (for example we went to STK and had a wonderful time with delicious meals), this is NOT one of those places. We tried calling the restaurant 5 times and no one ever answered. When we went downstairs to ask for our receipt the workers kept ignoring us and it took three waiters to get it to us. I am always on the lookout for a good place near ACT or the Curran. My old go tos shuttered during the pandemic and I have been slow to adjust. Tratto had been on my list for a while and I finally bit the bullet. Not sorry. My friend and I split several of the veggie dishes. The focaccia and olives came out piping hot. The olives were nicely seasoned and the bread had that spongy goodness I love. The arancini were exactly what I expected. Yum! We split a salad, the estiva. It had grilled peaches, tomatoes, arugula, and burrata. Good flavors and textures, also yum. For our main, we had the risotto. It featured beets and goat cheese. It was purple! Yoes, beets are typically purple, but for some reason, the vibrant color was a bit shocking. As you would expect, it was a very earthy dish. I almost wished it had a hit of acid to brighten it up, but it hit all the right notes in terms of comfort. Service was good. My friend wasn't crazy about her cocktail, but my Mexican Sprite was just fine. My biggest quibble is the street entrance. It requires you to walk up some stairs. I hate stairs these days. I imagine the entrance is more accessible. BTW, a 20% gratuity is automatically added to the bill. Makes splitting things much easier. I would definitely eat here again. Recommended. read more

While I'd like to give Tratto more stars on the strength of the dining room and friendly service, the price point simply eclipses those aspects. The savory fixings of the Kale Salad made it a perfectly pleasant meal, but the price tag approaching $20 for greens and cheese is a non starter. For two of us, the bill exceeded $60 with only one main. Note that they include gratuity on the bill, which is a fine practice in theory, but given the rarity of doing so for such a small party, feels underhanded. Although the kale was tasty, the menu suffers from not offering any heftier vegetarian additions. Moreover, there aren't any side dishes to complement a salad, so I was stuck with either a $40 tab for one meal or a still-empty stomach. It's hard to go wrong with lemon, garlic and parmesan, so at least Tratto didn't err in the salad prep, but given the context, it was underwhelming. That said, the space is beautifully appointed with the large scale Amos Goldbaum murals of San Francisco. Perhaps if one is attending a nearby show, Tratto cwuld be a solid option, but otherwise, it's not a near-term repeater. read more

Originally, I was planning on visiting the redwood room at the Clift hotel and it was unfortunately closed for the evening. So with a bit of a pout, I turned around and headed towards the red lettering for Tratto on the other side of the street. It was a clear sign from the universe, that was my new destination. Stepped in at the right time and with a few minutes to spare for happy hour. Sat right down at the bar and started perusing the menu a bit. The way I would describe this place is absolutely cozy. Warm and inviting lighting, friendly staff, and 3 stooges playing on the wall. Loved it. They had some Christmas decor up which added to this comfy vibe. For food, I started with a limoncello spritz and Arancini balls from the happy hour and what a beautiful little start. Arancini was beautifully crispy with just the right amount of marinara and parmesan to top it off. The limoncello was delightful and refreshing. Totally a drink, i'd like to revisit in the summer. Super yum. I was still a little hungry and opted for the Kale Salad. OH MY GOODNESS. This was definitely one of the best kale salads I had in a while. my eyes were definitely rolling in the back of my head for this one. Picture this: Perfectly massaged kale, with fresh parmesan, crispy quinoa, and the most amazing vinaigrette. I could eat this every night if I could. Something so comforting about a simple salad. I paired this with a beefy red wine. So good. I finished my meal off with a healthy glass of port. Which was great! What made the meal even better was the convo I had with Vidal! Such a great bartender and gave me a few recs of other places to go in the city. I'm a huge lover of great customer service and Vidal hit it out of the park! Before heading into a full day of conference courses, I made my way from my hotel to Tratto for breakfast. I'm more or less stumbled upon it when I was out getting a coffee, and when I saw that they had pancakes on the menu, I decided to give them a try. I had been craving pancakes for several days at that point, and they just seemed to be calling to me. The place was fairly empty, but my server was extremely kind and attentive. I placed my order for a stack of pancakes and eagerly awaited their arrival. The pancakes came out fresh and fluffy. They were traditional pancakes with a lemon butter and served with fresh strawberries and a side of warm maple syrup. The pancakes were quite tasty, nothing spectacular or out of this world. But I was quite surprised that they cost $25 given the portion/their size. Don't get me wrong, they were tasty pancakes and they definitely satisfied my craving but for $25 I would have hoped for larger pancakes or perhaps a more complete meal with a side of eggs and a protein. All in all, if you find yourself in the area and have a craving for pancakes like I did, give Tratto a shot. read more

I went to Tratto for dinner on a cold Sunday night before ice skating, and it was the perfect cozy meal to warm us up. We ordered the fritto misto with calamari, rock cod and shrimps, lasagna, tagliatelle con polpette (meatballs), and the controfiletto (top sirloin steak). What ticked me off the most was I did see on the menu that gradiuty was included, but my table had only 3 people in it, 20% gratuity included I felt was absurd for 3 people, on yelp it is labeled as $$ signs, but the total today the price was almost as much as a nice dinner for a family of five, there was just so much extra charge for no reason. 33$ for tip, added sf mandate charges, it was just absurd. My son and I had a dinner date here before catching a show. It was a lovely dinner... we were 45 minutes late for our reservation due to horrible traffic getting over the bridge. They were super accommodating and understanding. We were in a bit of a hurry due to being late, but all the food came out quickly so it wasn't an issue. We had the fritto misto, cesare salad, and pappardelle. Everything was yummy, my son really enjoyed the fritto misto and pappardelle. I thought the cesare salad was really good, great flavor and nicely dressed. It was the perfect environment to have dinner with my son, who was quite pleasant that evening for a 14 year old, lol. Various groups dining here, there were people on dates, groups of friends, and families dining here. Wonderful and relaxing atmosphere with nice waitstaff. We went here after seeing a play down the street at the Curran. It was convenient for an after matinee dinner. The menu had a variety of dishes so everyone was able to find something they liked. Everything was delicious. The service was great. My only complaint was that the doors were open on a windy day, so it was chilly inside. The candles on the table were in glass holders, so they didn't go out with the wind. Unfortunately, the service was consistently disappointing. We stayed at The Marker Hotel, which encourages guests to visit this restaurant by providing drink vouchers and complimentary coffee. On 10/12, we stopped in to redeem our wine vouchers and were considering ordering food as well. The bartender (older male) informed us that the vouchers were only valid during a specific time frame and immediately walked away without checking back in or offering any further service. We ended up leaving. We returned on 10/13, hoping the first experience was a one-off. This time, a female bartender was working. We waited about 15 minutes before she acknowledged us--no greeting, no "I'll be right with you," nothing. Although there were multiple staff members working, no one approached us. While we were the only guests at the bar without drinks, she checked in with every other group and walked away from us multiple times before finally taking our order, again without any sense of urgency. Two visits with two different bartenders resulted in the same lack of attention, which was disappointing. The second star is solely for a positive experience on 12/11, when a young male staff member served us coffee. He was kind, prompt, and attentive, and he checked in on us during our visit. My friend and I came here for fashion week here in San Francisco and this was conveniently attached to the Marker Hotel. For the value of the food, it is fantastic. I had the pizza with tomatoes, basil, and cheese. It was thin crusted and not salty. The taste was just right. The service could be better. When I was at the table, the fork was not clean. I requested for a new one twice that got me a new fork. It was hard to request service from one of the servers who didn't look at our direction. We discovered this restaurant years ago by accident before a Curran Theater show and made it our regular pre-theater spot. Sadly, after our most recent visit, I doubt we will be coming back. We had a 6:00 pm reservation, the restaurant was barely half full, and I stood at the host desk completely ignored. The bartender and at least two servers walked past without making eye contact or saying a word--not even a "someone will be right with you." I even saw one server tell another to go check on me, and his response was, "that's not my job." Totally unacceptable. By the time the host finally appeared, seated guests were watching me stand there awkwardly, clearly uncomfortable with what they were seeing. The poor service didn't stop there. I ordered a glass of wine while waiting for my guest. The server dropped it off and then vanished. He never once came back to check on me, and when my guest arrived, we had to flag him down just to place our order. As for the food: the Pappardelle with Three Meat Bolognese and the Tagliatelle con Polpette were bland, uninspired, and tasted basically the same--despite being described as two different dishes. For a restaurant that prides itself on homemade pasta, it was a huge letdown. What used to feel like a gem has now slipped into careless service and mediocre food. Kale insalata was the best bite we had - kale, oil, salt, cheese, probably because it actually had salt, and good quality cheese. The gnocchi and meatballs dishes were both bland. Our server Alex M... not sure if it's because we were a mixed race couple (the rest of the place was white and the small tables next to us seemed to get service) 1. Alex M knew nothing about the wine bottles on the menu, and I was trying to compare two barberas and two montepulciano, and with fake confidence told me silly things I already knew like "that one is a bold italian wine" LOL thanks. 2. Alex M never ever ever checked on us the entire meal despite passing us many times. I had to stop him just to get salt and pepper for the bland food, and he was annoyed we needed anything. Sigh. We were seeing a show so asked for our bill which she brought back promptly! Upon bringing our bill, she was the ONLY one kind enough to tell us that there is an 20% automatic gratuity added. So here is the reason I would have liked to give Tratto 2 stars: I have been to Tratto at least 3 other times and NEVER been told about the 20% automatic gratuity. **I do realize I should have examined the bill better and I rarely take a copy home, but every other time Ive been here no one has told me about it and I ended up tipping more. I recall looking at my credit card charges later thinking Id been over charged or forgot that I ordered something more but NOPE other Tratto waiters are just dishonest! And Tratto itself should be ashamed of adding 20% gratuity and not making it policy to tell people upfront especially since the service has historically been so crappy, why should I automatically pay 20%. This to me makes your wait staff and bartenders lazy, sloppy and careless since they are getting their 20% regardless. Its like they don't have to work for it so they don't care about offering good service. Maria changed that for me on this visit so THANK YOU MARIA! Tratto itself, I won't be back! Margherita pizza- perfectly what it's supposed to be Polenta fries- I crave these daily since we went. These are absolutely heavenly. Texture, flavor, temperature, perfection. Chicken thighs/ probably my least favorite thing we got, well cooked chicken that just tasted like lemon pretty much. Fine but overshadowed by the polenta. This was my first visit to Tratto, and it served one of the best Italian meals I've had in years. I started off with the Gem Lettuce Caesar Salad. My dinner companion and I asked to share the salad, and the kitchen served it on two plates so we did not have to divide the salad ourselves. This was a nice touch and showed a level of care that set the tone for the entire meal. Although most Caesar salads are served with Romain lettuce, the gem lettuce was a refreshing change. The Caesar dressing was homemade with diced anchovies, fresh olive oil, and garlic. The salad was perfectly seasoned-- even one grain of salt more might have been too much, but the chef has a confident pallet, knows how to balance flavors, and cooks with umami cravebility that takes dishes to the limit. I ordered the spaghetti with meatballs, which I know is often viewed as a child's dish, but I was curious about the meatballs, and so I took a chance to order this cliche Italian American dish. The pasta, marinara, and pork and beef meatballs were handmade and were possibly the best I've ever had. The pasta was cooked al dente, and the red sauce was extraordinary. I tasted a perfect blend of roasted garlic, fresh herbs, and puréed homemade sun ripened tomatoes. The meatballs were a delicious combination of Italian fennel sausage and beef. The pasta and meatballs were again perfectly seasoned and had a craveability that I have not experienced in a long time. I ordered a side of broccolini, which was so delicious that I ordered a second serving. They were grilled and had a coating of garlic breadcrumbs. For dessert, I had the Italian donuts that were served with a delicious duo of homemade chocolate and bourbon caramel sauces. The decor is modern and stylish. Everything I ate at the restaurant was extraordinary. I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant. read more

We are visiting from San Diego and found Tratto since it was close to our hotel. We are both foodies. The ambience is great, old style San Francisco and the food is amazing. We happened to be here during Restaurant Week and we had their tasting menu. The warm olives and focaccia were fabulous. The steak tartare was wonderful, the cacio y Pepe ravioli was fantastic, the steak entree was done perfectly and the dessert was truly remarkable. The service was impeccable as well. Came here to use happy hour tickets given from a stay years ago. The first one I used with an appetizer, then a second beer, a few weeks ago. It was fine, except when the bill came in was overcharged for the beer I ordered later. I dismissed it as they were busy, but was annoyed by the overcharge and inability to use both tickets I had at the same time. When I came back a few weeks later, they outright denied my ticket saying it was a fake photocopy, except if someone faked it, it came from the hotel themselves literally years ago. Perhaps at a time when they were out of the glossy finished ones, perhaps before they even had those altogether. Thought I'd finally get the comp drinks this place gave me, only to find out they don't honor them anymore. definitely won't be recommending this place to friends and visitors again. read more

pizza is a bit too doughy for my taste while I generally prefer a little more crispier/crunchier bite. made reservation 2 hours in advance and it was hassle free, the restaurant did looked very full. presentation is great, nice modern interior/atmosphere. definitely a place that is pushing for their wine but the over all vibe is also good for family. gnocchi has good flavor but slightly on the soggy side of the al dente scale. salad was light and just the right amount of flavor. attractive staff! read more

Was staying in the hotel and went in to have a nightcap. The bartender was a total jackass, very rude condescending, and it was almost like he didn't wanna help me so I left without purchasing anything and went somewhere that would be a little bit more polite, and courteous to their consumers. My recommendation avoid this place like the plague. Their food looked good, but I wouldn't eat here because the staff is rude and unprofessional. read more

I've been twice, and everything we ordered was quite good both times. It's a little pricey, but reasonable for San Francisco. Nice setting as well. I'm not sure why it's been so empty both times I went. I'll definitely be trying Tratto again in the future. read more
