We enjoyed a late lunch on Black Friday after a long morning of dress shopping. Surprisingly, there was a short wait, despite it being after 1pm and a mostly empty space. I guess they only had so many servers available. Our server was so friendly and warm, much needed after some hectic time at the mall. She explained the specials, got our prosecco ordered and to the table in an ice bucket. She chatted with us about our day's festivities and made further recommendations. I chose the Brussels sprouts salad and added a fried egg for protein. Others got the cod sandwich, the Cesar salad (with spring mix since it was the height of the Romaine Recall of 2018), and the salmon salad. Everything was delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed my Brussels sprouts - leafed and lightly dressed with just the right amount of tenderness. Bottom floor there are TVs for when there's big sports games going on and there is a whole wall of self poor alcohol. there are another two levels you can eat on, all very cute, as well as a rooftop area. It is a really cool place. Part of the old armory by Cobbs hill. Really big windows, high ceilings, really cool lights (you'll know what I mean if you go there). I went there during restaurant week, had the salmon and milanese chicken. It was really nicely presented and with good flavor (like the roasted lemon). However, I find their regular menu unexciting. Which is why I didn't check it out for a long time although I live so close by. I did quite enjoy it but I was ordering out of restaurant week special. Maybe their specials are more exciting. My friends and I went to TRATA (The Restaurant At The Armory) for a few big group dinners, and we tried a bunch of different plates. It has a big parking lot but can get pretty busy. We went on a weeknight at around 7pm and the lot was filled all the way to the back so I had to park pretty far away. In terms of drinks, I liked a lot of their cocktails, such as The Rising Sun, White Cosmo, For the win, Lavender Collins, and the Caribbean "milk punch." We tried a few of the sharing plates. Definitely get the Duck Quesadilla and the Artichoke Dip. The buns, wings, and buttermilk chicken fingers were pretty good too. We tried their Prime Cut Meatballs, which were just OK imo. For entrees, I tried some of the new dishes they'd just added. The wild boar bolognese sounded pretty good and exotic, but it was just OK, for $22. Same with the Roast Pork Loin, $18. read more

Been to TRATA a few times now, great place to go for happy hour. Great location, right at the Culver Road Armory, so there's lots of parking. As you walk in your greeted by a large square bar...surrounded by windows. From the bar you can look straight up the the third floor and the surrounding brick and wooden decor. The second floor has a lot of table seating and a cute little area to hangout on couches. The unisex bathrooms are located right here by the staircase, all sinks are located in each stall. Don't want to have to go all the way in a stall to wash my hands. But the place to go is the third floor, the home of the rooftop bar ans seating area. Smaller bar with a few seats there, but more options for seating at small round tables. This is the place to go on a beautiful night, light breeze and a decent view. Good beers on tab and even more bottle options. Iv'e had a few appetizers here, my favorite have been the lettuce wraps (such flavor and so much you have to share) duck quesadillas so good, a must try! You sort of have to know about TRATA if you are going to go there. Who goes to an armory to look for a good meal? We called up early on a Saturday evening, hoping against hope that we would be able to get a table without a reservation. They were a little hesitant but found us the perfect table on the second floor, a booth near the bar. This was our first "post Covid" visit to the restaurant. It has been a long time and we missed it. They moved the downstairs bar from the middle of the room to the front window. This gives a lot more room for dining tables and people watching. We ordered two plates from the small plate menu and two bowls of New England Clam Chowder. It was real comfort food. We had drinks and wine with dinner. Service was attentive. The bill was a little expensive but well worth it. read more

I've been to Trata so many times for lunch and dinner, and had been dying to try their breakfast. The menu is rather small, I would have loved to see an omelette option on there or more egg dishes. However the meal did not disappoint. The breakfast burrito was amazing. I've never had better home fries. The cappuccino was also good, just wish it was bigger. All in all, it met my high expectations as usual. Will definitely be back to try different aspects of the brunch, probably very soon! read more

I don't really know what to say that's not been said.. but I will try to give a different spin on things. I have now been here three times for cocktails, brunch and lunch. I find during the summer if you want an alfresco experience you go up stairs and get yourself a drink or a glass of wine. Brunch is interesting in as much as I love toast and butter and jam I still do not understand why places want you to pay for it? Was it good yes, it was local breads and biscuits and it was tasty. But it just seems to be some trend that's annoying. Sorry... their Mimosas are well put together and the Blood Mary's have a kick. We tried the lettuce cups they are enough for two to share and very flavorful and than we got the French Toast it was almost like desert. Granted a friend and I shared it but this was not an inexpensive brunch, with brunch drinks, coffee, and our shared plates I think it was over $30 a person. Not bad .. than where they sat the two of us was like in limbo and the lighting was bad? The tables for two people are so small.. I don't get it. Service was pretty good but sometimes it takes time to get things. Brunch I get it.. but lunch on a weekday? Another friend and I recently went and had lunch, we both got the same thing. Grilled Cheese with the tomato soup and homemade chips. Oddly enough it seemed to take forever to get this? I'm not one to normally order grilled cheese as it needs to be sent out ASAP it was all hot but the sandwich was a hot mess and the tomato soup/bisque well it almost seemed like a rustic , full of seeds tomato sauce. Always love the food. They change up their menu (I think seasonally?) so it doesn't get boring and they have options for vegetarian/ vegan. It's taken me a number of years to finally come here, and I really enjoyed my first experience. My dad wanted to take the family to a "goodbye/sending off" dinner for me as I move overseas. I had heard talk about their burgers being great. Here's a run down of the positives and negatives. POSITIVE 1 - great booths/larger tables for bigger parties. Definitely make reservations for prime evenings. 2 - service - everyone from the hostess to the servers was SO friendly. And they didn't hover. it was great. 3 - food - delicious. I would go with the brussles sprouts salad and the thai coconut curry shrimp. YUM!!! 4 - Atmosphere - the urban industrial look works. NEGATIVE only one - the sound. It is so loud, that it is hard to hear your tablemates. Trata has always been a fun restaurant to go to since they have a great atmosphere. They have a fabulous rooftop bar to enjoy during the summer and three floors of spacious seating indoors. Any size party can be accommodated. Trata recently went through a makeover during Covid and added a new self-serving tap wall with different beers, seltzers, and wines. I don't know any other restaurant in Rochester that has this! You can start a tab at the bar and then they give you a Trata credit card to swipe at each tap. It automatically connects to your tab at the bar. Super convenient! We enjoyed great meals at Trata last night, but the menu seems to be different every time we go, and I was a bit underwhelmed this time. The menu included your standard salads, burgers, and a few main entrées. The appetizers didn't stand out to me either. They usually have a very unique calamari app, which was no longer on the menu. We settled on nachos instead. Very good, but you can get those at any standard bar. I will return again in the winter in hopes that the menu changes over again. read more

Can I write "get the duck quesadilla" and that be it? Because I feel like that's all you really need to know. Ok fine, I'll add more... We sat on the rooftop, it's trendy and hip - I loved it. The inside looks really cool as well. The layout offers different areas so it looks like the perfect place to have a private event no matter the size. They have a great menu with a lot to choose from, our party of 4 shared the duck quesadilla and the spinach dip. Obviously I think the duck quesadilla is amazing, it's worth mentioning twice. The spinach dip is also very good but I wish it came with some more chips. I got the chicken milanese which was super tasty, everyone else got the burger which I heard was phenomenal. I have been here a few times. For dinner, i have had the kobe burger and the short ribs. The ribs have a rich gravy from the slow cooking of the beef and it was really good. One of the better short ribs i have had recently. The burger is good but i think i would have one of the other burgers if i went back. Kobe beef isnt legal in the US so this is just dry aged meat inside of the burger. i think you are paying more for the name in this case despite it not being real kobe beef (which should cost way more than this burger). I went for brunch. The meals are on the pricier side and smaller. The food is worth the price. Eggs Benedict were poached perfectly. Pork belly was average. Libras like me enjoy beautiful, impressive surroundings, everywhere we go. I'm just gonna come right out and say it: I would come back here just to revisit the second floor unisex bathrooms. Nay, bathsuites. It's like renting your dream apartment, with brick walls, flattering lighting, lofted ceilings, and...a water feature, for a few moments. I invite you to go to Trata just to wash your hands, those bathsuites are that pretty. I did eat here, too. We started off with the Fish Tacos, which come as three amigos, and which I would order again simply for the petite bottle of hot sauce that comes on the side. As vague as wild-gulf fish sounds, it was a meaty white fish, grilled and light, sitting under a bed of colorful micro-cilantro, peppedew ranch sauce and tangy mango salsa. It almost took me back to Cali where the fish tacos are fresh and flavorful in abundance. Trata pulled off a close cousin. I'll jump straight to dessert because I ordered the Grilled Chicken Pasta with orecchiette, and enjoyed its pesto, artichoke and asparagus tips flair, but took most of it home. I wanted to get to the Sticky Bun. The Trata Sticky Bun looks like a mountain of dough lined with cinnamon trails. You also encounter deliciously treacherous pecans along your fork's path to the Trata flag flying at the top. I could have used it slightly undercooked. It's a little more substantial than a cinnamon bun. However, cinnamon mountain is capped with a fresh mound of pecan praline ice cream and it is both sweet and refreshing. Trata is brick-and-gorgeous, the staff are incredibly attentive and the uplighting will bathe you in a glow that makes you look ten times better...even after you stuff yourself with their food and refreshments. WOW! Trata is amazing. This was my first time visiting Rochester and the company took me us out for dinner. I was not expecting it to be as good as it was! We all started at the bar and had some delicious drinks. I stuck with a classic mojito and couldn't be more pleased. A great ratio and not too much mint that you can't enjoy your drink. As for the food - it's a memory I'll never forget. We started with the duck quesadilla. I've never had duck before but this was a quesadilla we talked about the next day in a meeting, and dinner that night. The cranberry jelly gave it a unique taste that I wish I could have more of. As for my meal, I had the Wagyu burger on a pretzel bun. I was nervous because I'm not a huge fan of pretzels but the bun was perfect and not too salted. The meat was cooked perfectly and gave a lot of flavor. Lastly, I got a side of mac and cheese. The noodles had a fun shape but the taste was even better. One of those hip places that seems to have it all. From the ambiance to the menu that hits the spot every time. We went a few years ago and ate on the roof. Since we have dined here at least five times in 2014 I have averaged these visits to a 4 star rating. Overall we really enjoy the diverse and reasonably priced menu and the wide selection of beers. And we really like the architecture and the great atmosphere of TRATA (though it can be very loud when crowded). We have been here with big groups and just as a couple and the service is usually very good - though when busy we have sometimes found the kitchen can lag a bit. We can highly recommend the fish tacos, the tempura green beans, the short ribs and most of the burgers. Generally they cook the burgers to the correct done-ness though last night the medium rare was closer to medium well and dry. The side dishes including the mac & cheese and surprisingly the Brussels sprouts are quite good. In summer the deck is a great place for drinks. We hope TRATA keeps up the high standard they've set these first couple of years. read more

I haven't been to TRATA in a few years, and it was suggested as a place to go due to their BYOB no corkage fee on Mondays. Apparently that isn't a thing anymore (corkage fee is $15). The inside is still modern and cool, with a high tech hostess station, coat check, and large bar with gorgeous lighting. We were taken back to our booth, handed menus, and I was pretty taken aback at how the menu had changed. I feel like it is trying to meet people in the middle from their former culinary standouts; they offer a lot more sandwiches, burgers and fries, etc. They kept the fish tacos with mango salsa, and I was pleased with that in the past. I had the BALT sandwich with a side of fries, and my friends ordered sandwiches as well with brussel sprouts for an up-charge of $3. This was my first visit to TRATA. I ordered the salmon over roasted potatoes. There was a sauce on the salmon that was delicious. I found the potatoes to be perfectly cooked but slightly too much salt. My friend had the sea scallop. She loved it. We saw many orders of the sea scallops going to tables around us. We enjoyed the artichoke dip appetizer with TRATA's own handmade chips. So good. We could have eaten that for dinner with a spoon! It was a busy Friday night with a great crowd and the restaurant had a very contemporary look and feel. Our service was great. The waitress was wonderful. Well where do I start? The fries were good although not as lightly crispy and fluffy on the inside as I like. Could've stood for a couple more minutes frying but they were fine. The slaw was decent but they gave you a "sample". I wanted more of it but I think they went for presentation and wanted the fish to be the star. The fish. *cries*. It was soooooo salty!!!!! Like to the point my insides dried up and my lips were stinging. My friend said hers was the same. We told the waitress and she whisked it away and had it remade. Unfortunately the second attempt was just as salty and we couldn't finish it. Waitress apologized and manager did also. What was nice was they brought over a lively peach pie with ice cream for my party to share and took the fish off the bill. Came here for brunch on a Sunday morning with a party of 5. We didn't make a reservation but the place was so big and spacious that we were seated immediately. My entire table almost unanimously got the Eggs Benedict. It comes with crispy pork belly over two hearty biscuits. The eggs were poached a little too long for my liking -- the yolks were not as runny as I'd hoped they'd be. The pork belly was tasty but not crispy at all. The biscuits were good but a bit too heavy for me to finish. The only highlight of this dish was the lemon-sriracha hollandaise sauce. It added a nice zest to the dish that I've never tried before. My friends also ordered some of their special drinks but all were disappointing and too watered down. You couldn't taste the coffee in the Booze & Buzz, and the Trata Mimosa was mixed with watered down orange juice, not fresh as advertised. Even their coffee was not very good and I'm not a coffee connoisseur at all. Overall I enjoyed the atmosphere and service of this place, but there's definitely room for improvement when it comes to their food and drink. I'm not keen to come back again anytime soon. read more

Had dinner with a big group of friends here the other night. Everything was very good - food, drinks, service! I've been here a few times before and enjoyed my meals, but felt it was a little pricey, a little slow and a little bit loud. But on this night, celebrating a friend's upcoming wedding, we had a great experience. For the table we shared 4 appetizers - the artichoke-red pepper dip with chips (really delicious), the chicken skewers with shiitakes special app (great flavor and the shiitakes especially were awesome), the tempura green beans (deemed 'too healthy' by most of my friends, but I thought it was done well with a nice crispy coating over perfectly tender but still crunchy beans), and one other that must have been less than stellar because I cannot recall it at all! For dinner I went with the Grilled salmon dinner salad on the advice of a friend who had it recently. It was very good, but I question the use of apples and grapes, only because those fruits are not in season, but everything in the dish worked well flavor-wise, Others at the table had the steak dinner salad, one had a pasta dish that was really great, one had the steak special, and two had the Asian/Thai-inspired noodle dish. Only one person had enough to take away left overs! In addition, all of our drinks were great, and our server was on his game, checking in just as we needed stuff, but not hovering, and able to make suggestions when there were questions. At the end we finished with two orders of the skillet chocolate chip cookie, served with a side of vanilla ice cream. Each cookie was large, hot and gooey and easily fed 4 people who were already full from dinner! TRATA is a solid dinner spot, with a great atmosphere and efficient skilled servers and bartenders. I remember when Trata 1st opened up years ago I was super excited to try it it. My mom and I went for a lunch and both of us were disappointed with both of our meals. However since then I've been back twice now for drinks and I must say I do really like their bar area and cocktails. My friends and I came in on a Saturday night to grab drinks since none of us have ever been all that impressed with their food. Trata has extensive cocktail, beer, wine menus; therefore, I cannot express more how great it is for drinks. The bar area was crowded and lively with good vibes. My friend had been raving about their Lavender Collins so I decided to give it a try. It was super refreshing and tasty. Our bartender that night was incredibly friendly and chatted us all up. The bar area is huge so it's a nice place for a larger group of you get here early because it gets crowded early on the weekends. They also have an outdoor space on an upper deck which is a hot spot during the warmer months. I went upstairs and tried to sit at the bar and the bar was filled with so many drunk people, it would be impossible to sit there and have dinner. They have outside seating downstairs and she said, you can't sit there and get served. It was all around a terrible experience. I wouldn't recommend it and the 2 hostesses need proper training. Trata had always been kind of our second choice a lot when deciding where to go out to eat. You always pass by it and think "oh, this place looks good". So we decided to give it a try for one of our friend's birthday dinner. The inside is super nice and beautiful. It's really cozy. First there's the bar portion of the restaurant and then past it is the tables for the restaurant. For our meal a lot of us ordered their burgers and one person decided to go for the Shrimp curry ($19). I ordered the Brisket burger ($14 I think - which is supposed to be their super famous burger). We were started with bread that was really good. It's definitely a thick bread and the butter with it is great (especially with a tiny little salt on top). The waitress took our plates away after we finished the bread basket (sad cuz we were hoping for another delicious basket). Our food came fairly shortly. We didn't like how the burgers came in a metal tray(the one with a lot of holes in - see pics) that reminded you of school cafeterias. I get being hipster is cool, but so are real plates. So we kind of made a mess everywhere since there was nothing to catch the meat juice. The food itself was really good and tasty. The brussel sprouts and onion rings (sides that came with the burger) were really really good. It doesn't look like a lot of food but you are FULL after. The curry shrimp was also good, definitely impressed for a non- Asian restaurant (Shrimp with a curry sauce over rice noodles), but you should still go to an Asian restaurant if you want some real quality, quantity, and extra tasty curry noodles. Overall, everything was pretty good and they even gave a free dessert to our birthday girl! They did forget to give a soup to one of our friends who ordered it but they took it off the bill when we notified them. Definitely a tasty place but a little on the pricey side for what you're getting. Also, the bathrooms were nice but you could get a little claustrophobic if you don't like bathrooms where it's like you're completely shut into a mini closet with a toilet. read more

This place should serve drinks and only drinks, the food was such a disappointment. Throughout the summer I came here occasionally on Sunday mornings for champagne or mimosas and the ambiance was so neat. The big bar upon entering is hip, modern and the floor to ceiling glass windows allows for a cool view outside. It's definitely chic in here, slightly upscale and I highly suggest exploring the rest of the place if you find yourself at the bar. There are three floors and the second floor has a lounge area, which my friends and I have taken advantage of often. There are benches with little tables and it's a great place to chit chat without having to sit down at a table and order food. The bathrooms are some of the weirdest I've ever seen. The ones on the second floor are unisex, but each individual stall has their own sink. I still don't like that idea. Women go to the bathroom to fix their hair and makeup and call their girlfriends to tell them to come save them from their god awful date in 20 minutes. They don't need a guy next door eavesdropping on that conversation. The second floor is where you'll find balcony access, which is nice over the summer if you don't mind the view of the highway, because that's about all you can see from the top. During the day it's filled with bees, but at night the outdoor bar is lit up and it's fun. No specific demographic, people of all ages were scattered around. Their third floor has another dining area with lots of tables, kind of perfect for a group gathering, not show what the going rate would be to rent out the third floor but it's nice and private with access to the kitchen through a swinging door that was really enjoyable while we were eating at the table right next to it (sarcasm.) So I had family in town from Long Island and foolishly failed to make a reservation somewhere ahead of time. We attempted one place that had a 45 minute wait, called another that had a 30 minute wait and then Trata popped into my head. I recalled glancing over the menu last time I was at the bar for drinks and told myself I had to check it out. So I called and go figure, they were able to accommodate our party of 3 right away. I should have known then that there was probably a reason they had no wait and the other places did. We were sat immediately after trekking up three flights of stairs. We didn't mind, but that would have been important to mention to us over the phone. Perhaps, "Yes, we can seat your party but you'll be on the third floor is that alright." It's the little things. So we get to the top and we're seated at a table right in front of the swinging kitchen doors. Woof. Our server came over shortly, gave us water and left a carafe filled with water on the table, which we really appreciated, especially after our hike up the stairs, we were parched. The menu had appetizers, some salads, burgers and entrees. Expensive. Expensive. Which, I was find with considering the ambiance of this place really is nice, I was just hoping the quality of the food matched it's price. (Spoiler alert: It did not.) Specials were presented on a wooden clipboard. Not appropriate for this type of restaurant; you are not trying to be hipster here. We started with the artichoke and red pepper dip which was advertised as being accompanied with tortilla chips. We also picked out the thai salad with chicken to start with. The dip was OK, very very heavy and filling, the chips were inedible. They were homemade, like the menu warned, but they were literally dripping with grease. I had two chips and was full because of the amount of grease these babies were cooked in. So unbelievably unhealthy I felt my arteries clogging with every bite. The thai salad was blah, chicken was cold. It was simple, nothing to it and overly dressed. I found one peanut in the whole salad, not worth your money. The bread they brought out to the table was the best part of the meal. I would recommend tossing the tortilla chips with that dip and going for the bread instead. Before we were finished with our appetizers our entrees came flying out of the swinging doors. Nothing better than being bombarded with our next course while we are still enjoying the first. I got a turkey burger, my Uncle got the salmon salad and my cousin went for the grilled chicken pasta. I could go on for days about this "turkey burger." It was served in this "basket" which was so impractical and annoying. Yes, give me a burger in a metal basket with holes in it so when the ketchup oozes off it goes onto the table. The brussels sprouts that came with the burger were tasty, but too buttery and salty. You couldn't bite into the turkey burger. This is not an exaggeration. The bun was so stale and the burger was bone dry. Bone. Dry. My Uncle said his salad was fine and my cousin enjoyed her pasta. Moral of my story is that this is not the place to go to for food. Drinks, yes. They have no business putting entrees on this menu for $27, no way. read more

First of all, I love the space. It's a beautiful venue: spacious and bright, with trendy decor. The bar area upon entering just feels like a great place to hangout. I also heard they have a rooftop, but I didn't get to check that out. Disclaimer: I normally have a very high standards when comes to food. I've traveled to numerous countries and spent lots of money sampling food, from street food to Michelin starred restaurants...so I can be very picky. In terms of the brunch, they offer typical brunch items. We shared a basket of bread from village bakery next door, omelette and baked french toast. The bread baskets really doesn't have anything special, just four half-slices of toast and one biscuit, which was dry. The omelette was flavorful but I prefer fluffy and softer texture. With all the ingredients mixed in, the omelette tasted a little more like scramble except it still held the structure of an omelette. The French toast was just flat out mediocre. The brioche had this weird rubbery texture. Doesn't really have much flavor without maple syrup. The cocktail I ordered was pretty good though. I think I'll come back for drinks only and the space. I cannot recommend the food for the price they charge. read more
