This is a tough review for me. I have eaten here a few times and the food is good, but I am not sure I would consider it great. I have stopped in for happy hour on many occasions and the crowd is definitely a mixed bunch. If I am out with a couple buddies hoping to talk to some interesting people, this is not one of our favorite spots. If I am out with a group of friends looking to have a few drinks and its nice out, then the rooftop bar is one of the best inventions in all of Rochester. If I am looking for an upscale place for the night, there are usually other places I will go to first. A year ago I went to TRATA with friends and had an ok dinner. I wrote a review and was contacted by the manager that they wanted me to try them again and sent me a gift card. We finally made it back today. I came with my family. We had a 6:00 reservation and were seated right away. Our server was very nice and attentive. She greeted us promptly and told us of the specials. We were brought the same yummy bread and butter as I had enjoyed before. This time, I thought about doing one of the dinners, but I wasn't that hungry. The kids wanted the pretzel sticks as an appetizer. I had a piece of that and it was really good. I opted for the charred tomato soup. I wasn't sure what exactly it was, but the server recommended it highly. I got that and the chicken fingers. I honestly didn't love the soup. It was a little too spicy for me. I cant describe the flavor, it was a strong flavor not to my liking. My husband tasted it and didn't care for it either. The chicken fingers were fabulous. Breaded and fried, perfectly crispy without being heavy. Both kids had the sirloin steaks and said they were very good. Cooked to perfection. My husband had the fish special, he said it too was very good. When we were done, I asked for a box to take home the remaining chicken fingers and the server asked if I wanted a container for the soup. I said I didn't really love it and she said ok. When she came back with the bill, she had removed the soup since I didn't like it. I was pleasantly surprised at that. She did not have to do that, I was not expecting that. So on second chance of TRATA, it was decided that we would go back. We were sitting in the back and it was a Thursday night. I don't know if I would go on a weekend, I can imagine it gets very loud and very busy. I prefer quieter places. But we will definitely go back. read more

Love the atmosphere here. Very modern and interesting. They had some interesting cocktails which were very refreshing. I defiantly suggest the pretzels for the appetizer for their raspberry beer cheese dipping sauce alone. My boyfriend could not get enough of their fries and loved his short rib burger. Went to Trata on a Tuesday night for dinner, my wife and I normally go for happy hour or cocktails, however this was our first time for dinner. We waited 20 mins to be seated, and we took a look the dining room was pretty empty not sure why it took us that long to be seated. I ordered the Kobe burger and the burger was greasy and the bottom part was soaked with grease. The onion rings were also greasy. In my point of view Trata would be just known to me as a high end cocktail bar and I can do without the food. read more

My experience at Trata was a very enjoyable one. The food was delicious, the wait staff was extremely friendly and the atmosphere was classy yet relaxed. The duck quesadilla was delicate and very flavorful. The mushroom burger was a wonderful balance of savory and buttery. If you have the pleasure of being waited on by Matthew, his Australian charm will quickly put you at ease and enhance the already inviting ambiance. I only have two complaints, which are minor. 1. Prices were higher than expected but certainly not excessive. 2. The stools at the high tables were not comfortable but were at least tolerable. I went to trata only for drinks a few months ago. Thy drinks were very tasty but very expensive for Rochester (mostly around $10/drink which is downstate prices in nyc). The ambiance on the roof on a warm spring night was great. It was easy to get a table because it was a weeknight. With its very trendy ambiance, I had high hopes for my first visit to Trata. My husband and I came for dinner on date night at his suggestion. We were quickly seated upstairs and put in our order for drinks while we checked out the menu. My husband orderd the Kobe burger while I opted for the steak special. My steak was cooked to PERFECTION. It was extremely tender and the first few bites were amazing. The first bite I thought "hmm...this is a little salty, but decent". The steak had a soy balsamic glaze which was also on the veggies and potatoes. After a few bites I felt like I had a salt lick on my plate. Why was it so salty?!?! My husband felt the same way with his burger. Burger, bacon and fried onion rings had him reaching for his water. I know...life choices, but we didn't know prior to ordering that we would have the salt sweats when we got home. Soooo...trendy cool place to go for drinks (it HAS to be given the crowd size located around all of the bars). Took Trata out for a test drive tonight as our destination for our annual summer date night. My boyfriend heard good things - let's give it a whirl! I decided not to tempt fate and looked the restaurant up through Yelp the day before. Found I could easily make a reservation online - had it set up in less than 3 minutes on my smartphone. (Even got a confirmation e-mail and a phone call the morning of.) We arrived right on time (6:30) and waited about 5 minutes for our table. For a Saturday night, there was a pretty good crowd but not overwhelming. Got our table on the first floor. (Note for other patrons: ask for the second floor or outdoor seating.) Our server, Ryan (sp?) was great. She checked in often and had some great suggestions as I struggled to make up my mind. We started with two cocktails (the white cosmo was wonderful) and an order of steamed buns -- those little pork belly pancake nibblers were awesome. (My bf says those were the highlight for him.) While my other wanted the bacon wrapped sirloin, I had no clue what to choose -- nothing was leaping out at me from the menu. I asked Ryan for some suggestions and took her up on the brussel sprouts salad. She said the wait staff was effectively banned from ordering it anymore because they were consuming everything. Here's the run-down on what we ate...and ate...and ate. Bacon-wrapped sirloin with potatoes and sauteed kale -- the steak was good. Potatoes we nicely done. Kale was flavorful (but still cooked greens -- not my favorite). I had a bite or two of each. Macaroni and cheese -- my boyfriend added this as a side to his entree. This is one of the best mac & cheeses I've ever had. I'm not sure why this isn't included in any of the large plates but it deserves a lot more air time than it gets. YUM! Brussel sprout salad -- my server highly recommended this. The brussel sprout leaves are separated and blanched, so they are slightly cooked but they are served cooled (slightly weird, in my opinion). The crisped meat, french fried onions, and tomatoes with the cheese made up for the odd take on salad. I don't regret getting it but not the first choice to order on my next trip. Mushroom soup -- if you like good soups and you love mushrooms, ORDER THE MUSHROOM SOUP. Ryan suggested this one and she was spot on. I will now crave this damn soup from this day forward. I wish I could get a gallon to go. It was savory, had a nice consistency, and had tons of mushrooms and bits. I tore apart my share of the bread basket to dip crusty bread goodness in one of the best soups I ever tasted. (This is my highlight of the meal.) Lettuce wraps -- as others have said, well portioned, TONS of chicken, very tasty. Pigs in a blanket -- a more refined take on an old favorite from home. There are hot dogs and a sausage wrapped in filo dough (?), so the blanket is thin and crispy. Mustard sauces have lots of seeds but very tasty. DESSERTS Special of the day (skillet cookie with ice cream) -- very rich and VERY hot when it hit the table. My bf LOVED this one. Croissant bread pudding with ice cream -- I was hesitant to order this as every bread pudding I've ever had was goopey, warm bread. But the orange caramel sauce caught my eye and I took a shot. OMG. This was SO GOOD. It reminded me a bit of French toast but it was much better. Crusty and caramelized on the top. Firm in the middle. Moist but not soggy. And it was enough for 4 people. We found out the true distinguisher for this restaurant is its staff. Just after we received our meals, a group of guys (about a dozen or so) were given the two large tables next to us. It went downhill fast -- these other patrons were loud, all over the place, and were under the leadership of an individual who needed a lesson on how to behave in public. They were putting a damper on the whole experience and I made a remark to Ryan. While there wasn't much they could do, she said she'd look into it and offered us dessert on the house for the inconvenience. Not 2 minutes later Ramon (assuming he's a manager) came by to offer us a different table. Took him up on the offer but made sure Ryan could stay with us. Ramon kept close eye on us after relocating us to the second floor. He didn't hover too much but gave us time to enjoy our new seats and our desserts. When he came with the check, he asked how we were -- concerned about our experience. If there's one thing they know how to do at Trata, it's turning around a dining experience going south. Overall, food was great and the atmosphere of the restaurant is great. LOVE the old building with modern touches. I'd go back. Actually, I likely will. That soup was incredible! read more

Fantastic! All of the staff, from the hosts who greeted us to our eventual server, were extremely friendly and upbeat. Our waitress told us about the specials and how to navigate the menu, allowed us the perfect amount of time to decide our orders, and checked in regularly without being overbearing. She also brought out and ran the check quickly. The food was, as expected, absolutely divine. My friend and I split the artichoke dip - which I'd loved last time - and the Thai coconut shrimp curry. The curry sauce was extremely flavorful and paired excellently with the peanuts, which also added a perfect crunch to the already delicious dish. We decided to go all-in and share the cookie skillet for dessert, which was a gooey piece of heaven with a light drizzle of caramel sauce and scoop of vanilla ice cream. All the while, we'd been drinking the Lavender Collins and, my favorite, the Mexican Artillery. The ambiance was great, again. There was a private happy hour event happening on our floor, some 15-20 yards away from us, but there was absolutely no noise issue. I could live on the duck quesadillas and the dark mojito (formerly known as The Dark & Stormy, which in my opinion is a MUCH better name, but oh well). Over the past year or so I've slowly eaten my way through a good portion of the dinner menu, but I always order the quesadillas for the table and they never last very long. Even skeptics turn around after some cheesy, cranberry-covered, tender duck is popped into their mouth with a smear of crème fraîche. My entire family is obsessed with the croissant bread pudding. Even if you don't typically like bread puddings, order this; the portion is huge and it is stunning. If you somehow end up not loving it, someone else at your table will be thrilled to take it off your hands. I've never had bad wait service here, although sometimes I get the feeling that one of the 10-18 hosts/hostesses they have on is giving the stink eye to anyone who walks in without a reservation. (Seriously, how many host people are needed? I know this place is immense, but there seem to be enough of them to play football. Against each other.). The atmosphere is pretty trendy, but the details are great. It's obvious that the design was well thought out. The hall of small unisex bathrooms on the second floor is fabulous all by itself... Had a power lunch w reservations. The little things were done very well. Its a cool place you like being there. But the food was largely dissapointing. The fish tacos were soaking wet. Simply dripping in the runny sauce. It was just a mess that ruined the experience. Please fix that its just a cryin shame. Found this place because where we went to eat was closing in 10 mins and only had apps available. Had a good over all rating on yelp so we said why not. As we pull up to the establishment I am like wow this looks interesting. Large glass windows look into the main bar down stairs and i look up and you can see people hanging out on the roof top lounge. I think to myself when did Rochester get trendy. The people at the lower level bar where dressed from casual to trendy so we didn't feel under dressed. We go inside and start to head up the stairs because we weren't sure where to find the hostess but a gentle quickly grabs us and ask what we needed help with and quickly got on his walkie to find out if they still had servers ( their restaurant section was close to closing food service stopped at 11:30 and it was already 10 something) and as soon as he found out he took us down stairs to a table. Service was prompt and the server was very friendly and inviting. All the food and drinks on the menu looked so tempting. The table shared the lettuce wraps as an app and were not disappointed but were expecting something else (they had another restaurants lettuce wraps on their mind). I did not have any so I cannot say good or bad but i can say they finished the whole thing. We ordered the burgers for the most part, I had the Bison sliders, my friends had the Turkey and the Caprese, we had the IPA onion rings, sweat potato fries and regular fries. Needless to say the food was on point. we were all passing our food around like try this no try this no you try this one. Cooked correctly and the flavors melded so well. The onion rings were crispy and the onion didn't string out on the first bite. The drinks... oh man the drinks. We all decided to try something of the signature stuff instead of asking for something we always buy. The girls had the peach sangria of the specials menu and me and my friend had the Kentucky Tea and the Dark Mojito. once again we were all like try this no you try mine. The kentucky tea won at the table as best drink but all were 2 and 3 round worthy. For desert we were all pretty stuffed and decided to share the Guinness chocolate cake and we devoured it. The cost was good too. So were were done with dinner and decided to try out the outside deck. The night had cooled off a little so it was really nice being outside in the fresh air to enjoy a drink. This is were this review goes a little negative. We ordered another Kentucky and Dark mojito, both of them came out tasting different and the tea was really bad this time. The upstairs bartender is going to have to take some lessons from the downstairs bartender. I assume the upstairs people are probably ordering regular drinks and beer and not their specialty cocktails but you should be able to make them just as good. Then we are sitting at the table talking and my phone alerts goes off. My card was ran and i wasn't the one closing my tab. On top of that it was for way more than it should have been considering I only ordered two drinks and just finished paying for the same two downstairs with dinner. I go up to the bar and the person who serves me is like i'm not sure and then finds my card and hands it to me while the other bartender looks confused and walks away to talk to someone. Then the first one ask for the card and says - she is going to need it when she reopens it - so i give the card back and go to my table. We finish our drinks and i go to really close my tab and she hands me the bill and there are 4 drinks on my tab when i only ordered two. So now they have to refund my card and recharge my card. This took a while because she had to go get someone and they didnt really apologize for it. What was such a good experience down stairs was tainted by the upstairs. overall i had a good time, i would go back again and i would even give the outdoor bar a chance again. read more

Came here on a Saturday night with a friend, and the service was friendly and prompt, but the food was mediocre enough that I'm not sure I'll be back soon. I tried out the rooftop bar over the summer, and that was fun and unique of course, but coming back for dinner wasn't as good. We got the tempura green beans, which were salty and not that flavorful. I tried the veggie burger, which wasn't bad, but not great either. Just something to eat. French fries on the side, which were really mediocre, and I love a good french fry. I really looked forward to going to Tratta based on the reviews and the decor didn't disappoint. However, the service did. We ordered our drinks and waited. About 10 minutes later we ordered our apps and still no drinks. Finally we ordered our entrees and still no drinks. About 20-25 minutes later our app came, at same time our salad at the same, and along with all that we got our drinks. It was ridiculous. It was only beer! And why did we have to get our app and salad together? Btw the salad was ala carte which also bugs me. My entree was Thai shrimp curry. The shrimp was good but the noodles were overcooked and the sauce was bland. I'd go back for drinks but not for dinner. read more

Really impressed with Trata. They have over 40 beers on tap and tons of great cocktails too. The drinks are really reasonably priced and there's over 3 different bars. The outside rooftop bar is really nice and makes you feel like you're in a totally different place. The inside is neatly arranged and is a great place for a date or get together. This restaurant was beautiful. The atmosohere was romantic because the boothes are so large and you don't feel like you are listening to someone else's conversation. They were outstanding!! We were a party of four and we all wanted to share The apps come in a quantity of three ... So our waiter asked if we wanted an extra one since we were sharing. Great... Now we all can have one piece oif each ordered. Thank you! However when the bill came that extra piece for each app was priced of half the original price. So let's say a plate of 3 apps normally sell for $9 ... It was a little concerning once we were seated that it was at least 10 minutes before someone took our drink order , but our lovely server Elita apologized and was great about answering our questions and making suggestions. TRATA has very unique menu that it's hard for anyone to pass up. I've been there a few times now and I've never been disappointed. It's a bit pricey but the food is definitely what you expect for the price you pay. The Steamed Buns and Duck Quesadillas were great appetizers that everyone should try, and beyond that everything else is good too. I've gone with most of their specials of the day, but for a side you should always choose the brussel sprouts. read more

Excellent comfortable dinner experience. We had great service. My grilled salmon salad was awesomely prepared and very filling. This is a great place for a family meal with a good menu and wait staff is spot on. We ordered for dessert the chocolate cream pie. TRATA is the place to see and be seen. And that is it, for now. I had anticipated the opening of TRATA all summer, a restaurant with a roof top bar in the remodeled Armory just steps away, what more could a girl ask for? My first experience was quite anti climatic. I showed up with some friends around 1am prepared to be greeted by a large crowd, when actually the 3 story space was quite empty. We carried on with our night by ordering some drinks and some late night bar food. The food was great and the staff was friendly. We stayed until 2am and left satisfied. The next 3 visits were quite different; people must have caught wind of the new hot spot because the place is without a doubt exceeding the maximum number of occupants at least on Fridays and Saturdays. I won't bore you with every detail of my visit but you should note that the space is beautiful but with bad acoustics, three stories of tables are great if they had the staff to accommodate, the food would be great if it was prepared and delivered in a timely manner and it could be a great place to head out on a Saturday night but they close between 12am and 2 (it's been different every time). That being said, TRATA has great potential and I have no doubt that they will succeed once they "work out the kinks." It is worth checking out if only for drinks, just be sure you dress to impress. read more

Came here after my friend thumbed her nose at my food suggestions and raved about Trata. Came in and it was packed so we were put on a wait list. We decided to grab a drink while we waited but never actually got to order one before we were seated. We were seated on the third floor which was SO HOT I was sweating!!! Literally like 75-80 degrees up there!! I stripped off everything legally possible and ordered. We got the duck quesadilla which was really disappointing!! Thin layer of duck and some cheese with a sour cream tasting substance to put on it. After reading the reviews about this appetizer I was wondering if we were served the wrong dish or if it was missing ingredients, literally so bland! I ordered a burger which was actually really good. My drinks were delicious as well but overpriced in my opinion. The sever disappeared for long periods of time as there wasn't really anyone else seated on the third floor, so we needed things and had to wait. Someone said to come back and try it for brunch so I may do that but not thoroughly impressed with dinner overall. read more

I really enjoyed the atmosphere and finishes at this place. The loaded tortillas are amazing and so is the fried chicken and biscuits (best fried chicken I've ever eaten!). The Kobe burger was great too. One suggestion, stay away from the Shepard's Pie. I'm not that fussy of an eater and I absolutely hate wasting food, but yeah, I couldn't force myself to eat more than a couple bites. One of the coolest bars in the downtown Rochester area. I went there for happy hour after work, the atmosphere is very neat, and industrial. As far as attire goes everyone looked very classy, it reminded me of one of those upscale bars in London after everyone gets out of work to go have a few cocktails. I was seriously disappointed in my visit. The overly-trendy presence seems to be reserved for the 30 and over crowd trying too hard to feel 20something again. It feels posed. All of it. It's loud. It's overly-crowded. Drinks are way overpriced. Bar is shoulder to shoulder and loud with hard bar stools that are uncomfortable. As for the meal: The service was terrible. The steak was undercooked. The salad was wilted and felt as though it had been under a heat light. It took us 20 minutes past our reservation time to sit down, once we sat our server took 10 minutes to greet us then another 15 minutes to take our order. It was 840pm when we finally got our food and our reservation was at 730pm. Not acceptable. We won't be back. read more

Unfortunately Trata strikes me again. I love the restaurant for happy hour or drinking on the rooftop bar but sadly that is where the positives end for me. Their food has disappointed me on multiple occasions but for some reason I keep giving it a shot. Maybe it's because it's so close to me. I had their fried chicken which tasted like old grease and the breading was extremely greasy and did not stick to the chicken. The Mac and cheese was very good but that was it. My friends were disappointed with their burger. The wings were good as well but you can get good wings anywhere. I think this will be my last visit for dinner. read more
