Hit up Turcott's for the first time after an event this weekend, and am so sad I didn't know about this gem prior to now! Best part? Completely dog friendly inside! This is the best for folks who like to bring their pups everywhere and I wish I had known sooner. I also heard they have a rockin' weeknight karaoke, and I know my partner and I will be hitting that up at some point in the near future. This is your standard Monroe Ave dive (not the diviest there is but divey nevertheless) and it fits in great with the rest of the Monroe scene. I went with a raspberry vodka soda and it was perfectly strong, made by a super friendly bartender who was attentive to everyone seated. Turcotts Taproom got more than a face lift from the days it was Lola's. It got a soul transplant. Or maybe a soul merge. Lola's had a great run, and the well known corner real estate on Monroe Ave ( a major conduit to downtown Rochester) has had several past lives. Today's reincarnation is that of Turcotts. Turcotts belong to the same family of tap houses as Oxfords, Magpie's, Murphy's law, and Brass (check out the Yelp reviews). Bye bye to craft martinis and burlesque nights with the scantily dressed and goth-ish lady staff. Enter stage left: mixologists with that gritty-Monroe Ave-Dude! Where have you been my whole life-being. Instant liquid compadre and confidant. Maybe because of the heavy pours, but I'm sticking to my stance of good people good drinks. Prove me wrong. And now a brief history... This multigenerational-"family"-owned network of bars lost a dear and close "family" member when the longtime manager of Oxford's passed away. As an homage to this veteran bar manager the owners approached his family and asked if they could honor the fallen by renaming Lola's after him....or more exactly his family name: Turncott! Hence, Turcotts. Cheers to this! The physical layout of this watering hole has always been a challenge. Not only for the staff but for the patrons as well. It's narrow and doesn't accommodate groups greater than two. So if you're on date night or rocking lower Monroe Ave solo; then be sure give Turcotts some play. The makeover this establishment received is a huge upgrade. Goodbye great dive bar and hello jump off spot. Generous accents of red leather trim with matte black wood trip gives the place a good attempt at being not divvy- almost reminiscent of the British turncoats!...A good checkpoint on any Monroe Ave adventure. The drinks at Turncotts are definitely on par with the neighborhood. Depending on your relationship with the mixologist behind the bar, you're gonna have that off menu specialty or you're ordering one of the staples on the cocktail menu. You'll get a good drink with any choice. Don't look for the craft beverage on tap, as they offer little that's not bottled. Bottom line: tip your bartender and enjoy life. You're either gonna kick off at Turncotts or splashdown here. That's what makes the patron mix oh so good. If you hit the magic hours between 10 and midnight, you'll definitely have a story to tell at the water cooler. Overall: great homage to a fallen friend. Decent atmosphere with decent drinks. As a fan of Lola's, I was VERY excited to come back under the name Turcott's Taproom, which pays homage to the late owner who died battling cancer. Word is out that the original Chef is now back to make the great food the bistro once served. On my first visit I had the wings, which are the same they make for JD Oxford's...but this time with the house sauce, which is the same tangy-smoky bbq meets hot sauce mix that has been adapted by many restaurants. And naturally they cooked them to my specifications :-) I paired them with genny's salted caramel vanilla porter...or w/e it's called. On my second visit, my buddy and I shared the Turcott's poutine and instantly became my fave. Hardly greasy and hardly salty without sacrificing the good balance of flavors As you have guessed by now, I've been back twice under the new name. The first time was on Turkey day eve. They had yet to have the new menu available, but their beer list was good to go. The place underwent a hell of a face lift -- inside and out! Remember the wobbling tables? NO MORE! All the wood benches/booths are now nice and cushioned. The rear top half level is now carpeted and as great for group as it once used to be.. The bar is very shiny and beauteous. Other additions to the bar is a second flat screen, a juke box and a dart board machine. They new improvements is much more like a bar while maintaining the coziness and low key socializing vibe that its predecessor built a reputation for. Monroe is full of rowdy joints. Food is phenomenal! Chardonnay Clams with chorizo and sun-dried tomatoes as well as the Truffle Tater-Tots are my favs! Extensive draft beer selection and ample, if not expensive drinks. Came in around midnight on a Friday... initially friendly then bartender said he wouldn't accept out of state ID's... you know in a college town. Told us to go f*ck ourselves on the way out. Came here with a friend the other night to celebrate his birthday. They didn't mind us bringing in noodles from the place across the street and eating at their table, which we appreciated. They even sent someone over with a garbage can to gather our garbage when our group had finished! Drinks were relatively inexpensive. We bought a few pitchers of Magic Hat for $9. They had a cornhole tournament going, which was fun to watch, though we didn't choose to join in. The bartender was friendly, and seemed perfectly content to let us mull our choices for as long as we needed. Special were very clearly explained (a second and third time as our party expanded), and the bouncer working the door was friendly, gentle and not at all intimidating, which some bouncers think are requirements to adequately scare off potential customers. Came here on a Wednesday evening for happy hour. Unfortunately, there were no specials going on so I just settled with a draft and the parm fries. Nik Entertainment's gang will welcome you and treat you as one of their own. Nik and the Nice Guys often come and are friendly to everyone who shows up here. They even bring out their horns and play along to the Lead singer as he belts out a great tune! This place is fairly new. I didn't have high hopes because when it was Lola it was gross and pricey and weird. But I came here for lunch and had a couple beers and was really impressed. Bartender was a nice guy. They have a good selection of bottle beers. I ordered a pastrami Reuben. It was delicious. I was expecting some greasy pub grub but it was one of the best Reuben's I've had in awhile. I really hope this place does well because Monroe ave could use a nice clean trendy place as an alternative to all the dirty dive bars and Asian restaurants. Good job turcotts! read more

What used to called Lola's is now called Turcotts Taproom! Unfortunately, wiki wasn't able to provide me with a good definition of Turcotts. Next time. I came across this bar after my friend mentioned they were having a beer tasting event by Naked Dove Brewing Company. The event itself was small and quaint. The man who was representing the company did an excellent job explaining the different types of beers they had. And without a doubt, all were delicious! The bar itself goes pretty far back. Only thing is, there is not enough room to throw for the dart board in the back. But that didn't stop us. The color scheme is on point - the black and red go great together, and has an old English feel to it. Finally, the bartender is what made the night. He was welcoming, engaging, and attentive.... I have visited this bar 3 times now and 2/3 times have been a great experience. However, when I visited this past Friday, the first thing we were confronted with was an overbearing gate keeper of a bouncer who barked at me to close the door before I even had a chance to get all the way in. We were enjoying our (really expensive) drinks in the back area of the bar when the almighty gate keeper came barreling down 15 minutes to 2 to demand that we finish our drinks and get out. We weren't in anyone's way, and would've respectfully left within a few minutes. It just doesn't make for a very welcoming environment. I definitely don't plan on making this a weekend hangout. Other than that and the beers being kind of warm, the ambiance is great and the Sunday bartender (Daniel I think?) was great! read more

Stopped in for a random bar hopping on Monroe Ave. I've lived in Rochester my entire life and my pal is from Albany. We loved the beer selection and the wings!!! The wings were perfect, we just needed to taste the buffalo sauce a little more. Beautiful decorations for the season! read more

This is actually a really nice place. It wasn't too crowded on a Thursday night to be able to grab a drink and have a conversation. There were a large variety of beers on tap and the prices were average for the neighborhood. Some of the beers are ones you don't normally see in this area of the country so that was really neat to be able to try some things I haven't before and find new things I like. The bar was clean and the furnishings were pretty nice. I'd definitely go again sometime. read more

Turcott's is surprisingly classy for being a "Monroe Ave" bar. They consistently have great beers on tap and every single thing I've gotten to eat there has been delicious. The clams and reuben egg rolls were my favorite, but sadly, neither are on the menu anymore. The pastrami panini was excellent though (and I'm not typically a panini fan) and my friend got the Turcott burger and loved it. (Speaking of the menu, it seems to change quite frequently, so don't fall in love with any one particular item). They also have outdoor seating on the Wilmer St. side of the building which is great because you can enjoy yourself without the usual harassment of the vagrants trolling up and down Monroe Ave. The only real negative I have seen is that their bouncers can be seriously over aggressive and rude with patrons - I fully understand the need to keep a tight reign on patrons for the safety and enjoyment of all involved, but their behavior often comes across more like they're a bunch of nerdy kids who grew up and are now going to use their bouncer "power" to satiate their need for retaliation against the ghosts of bully's past. read more

This is a candidate to be my favorite bar in town. My only problem with this place is that the beers are too warm. I was here on Jan 24th for the Cardinals game. I ordered Flying Bison Rusty Chain and then the Ommegang Three Philosophers. Both were warm. Besides the place is nice, has a dart board and there are never too many people here. read more
