    Dart boards in the back
    Breanna B.

Not normally a bar I'd frequent, but now after visiting, I'll be back when the mood fits. We were there on a Saturday -- SU was playing Duke so everyone was rocking their orange tees. We grabbed some brews and headed to the back where there were dart boards (friends played), we watched them, and got sucked into the game. It was nice that they put the volume on so everyone could follow what was happening. After the game, the music went back on. There are seats and tables for sitting back there too along with pool. They even have a vintage cigarette machine -- I haven't seen one of those in a while. Even though I don't smoke it was still cool to see (FYI takes only exact change). It's much larger than I expected so there's room for people to move beyond the bar, which filled up first. At 8pm it wasn't too packed, but by 10pm it was semi-crowded. They have a good tap selection and cheap! I enjoyed a few Lagunitas IPAs. Lots of peanuts and popcorn for munching.

    Saturday night drink specials

I love Salinger's for what it is, a classy dive like bar. This isn't your Murphy's Law, or One type place. It's a casual, hang out with great people and great drinks. It's usually not overly crowded and can easily get a drink here. They recently expanded the place with blowing out the left wall that allowed more tables and places to talk. Part of the reason they expanded is they plan to have an in-house kitchen that will offer the typical bar food, but will highlighted by their own smoked meats! They also have a few dart boards and a pool table for entertainment. What I absolutely love at Salinger's is the large variety of beer and drink specials at ridiculous cheap prices. First they have Moosehead larger. Having grown up in Buffalo, I frequented crossing the northern border and discovering one of Canada's more unknown treasures. I recommend it, and I've never seen it in the US. Secondly they have these great craft beers bottles at $2 on a Friday and Saturday nights!! I've seen no places like it! Try: Moosehead, McSorley's Black, Seadog blueberry and Purple haze. It's one of my favorite bars in the entire 585.

For years, I had no issues--until one of the security guards, an older light-skinned man with dreadlocks who has worked there forever, began targeting me for no reason. On multiple occasions he acted aggressive and confrontational toward me, even though I never raised my voice or reacted negatively. The last incident was the worst. He disrespected me in a way no customer should ever experience, threatened to "f** me up,"* and had me banned despite the fact that I never did anything to him. His hostility seems to stem from the fact that he doesn't like someone I happen to associate with--someone who also never disrespected him. What makes this even more concerning is that the owner appears to allow this type of behavior. I've seen this guard act out for years, and instead of correcting it, it feels like it's been encouraged. Many people I know have had negative experiences at this bar, and some have even lost their lives due to the environment created when drug activity is allowed inside. I've spent thousands of dollars here over the last 17 years, and never have I been disrespected the way I was by someone who is supposed to ensure customer safety. I considered speaking to the owner directly, but based on what I've witnessed, I truly believe she condones this behavior from her staff. After nearly two decades of loyalty, I can confidently say I will never return.

The Afghanistan/declared war argument will devolve into angry yelling. You sit quietly and keep to yourself the fact that the last time the United States declared war was in 1942, against the government of Romania. Quick, finish the beer and get out of here! I hadn't been back since 2016ish and forgot some of the magical elements of the Bug Jar. Living room on the ceiling, the flying bug, great staff, electric environment, and super welcoming to everyone, to name a few. My (large, strong) vodka soda was $7 and I sipped while leaning against the wall in the "venue side" of the space. The room itself is truly so small and a 'lil awkward in terms of where to stand, etc. I wasn't there on a particularly crowded evening but I imagine, as other reviewers have said, it doesn't hurt to arrive early if it is a band you truly care about. This venue does so much to support local musicians and the whole scene in Rochester. Getting out and supporting the local scene is more critical now than it has been, and I am sad I had done such a terrible job practicing what I preach post-pandemic. Get ye to a Bug Jar show if it has been a minute and enjoy a great night with great stories!
