Trams is, IMO, the best Vietnamese restaurant in Pittsburgh. Although their menu isn't huge and they don't offer my favorite noodle soup, bun bo hue, everything that I've tried is super yummy! Plus, they have good prices! I always start out with fresh spring rolls. I think they could use a little bit more fresh herbs in there, but their dipping sauce is really good. I'm also a huge fan of the mixed/special vermicelli noodles. It comes with tons of grilled and shredded pork, a crispy spring roll, and veggies on the bottom. Always enough for two meals too. Best beef pho you will ever find in Pittsburgh! Consistently delicious! I have eaten at Tram's more times than I can count and I recommend it to everyone I know! We typically start off our meal with the crispy wontons and an iced coffee. The main entree is always a tough choice, but you can't go wrong! All of the soups are delicious! The curry is out of this world! Vermicelli is a great choice if you're not in the mood for hot soup! Oh and of course the bahn mi is unmatched! Stopped here for pho but wasn't impressed. The older gentleman got my order completely wrong and when I sent it back he got mad at me and didn't look/check on me after than. Threw my check in the table as he passed by and then when I cashed out he just left the cash on the counter and didn't hand it to me, then turned away. Super unprofessional. The pho was okay as far as I've had at other places. Less noodles than I would have expected for the size of the bowl. The flavor was okay but a bit salty and pretty greasy. The little Viet restaurants brings a lot of nostalgia to me. The owners provide really awesome service, however, the food tends to take a really long time to arrive at your table. I have to say, most of the items on the menu are not quite there yet, leaving much to be desired. However, their Pork Banh Mi will be the thing that I'll always come back for. The key is their homemade mayo, oh man, that taste just like childhood in Vietnam. The pork is tender and seasoned to taste, the overall balance of ingredients is really what most restaurants here struggle with. Not to mention, the size is almost double than an average banh mi youll find anywhere else for the same or even lower price! Im sorry but you people rating this place so highly need to go out and taste real Pho. This place to begin with is using the wrong noodles for pho. PHO is a type of noodle not these flat noodles. The taste is blend, like very blend. The meat are not the thin slice of meat, the list of cons wilo be long. Tram's is one of my favorite places in Pittsburgh to have a meal, and I frequently find myself craving their food. It is nothing fancy, but it has never disappointed me. I always get the summer rolls and pho and leave feeling full and comforted without that bloated "I just had a big meal at a restaurant" feeling. Flavors are authentic and invigorating. It's so odd that this place has so many reviews and so many good ones at that because from my experience, it really doesn't live up to all the great reviews. I moved to Pittsburgh for OT school, and the very first time we visited the city, my mom, little brother, and I were hungry, so I consulted yelp on finding a good place for Vietnamese food. It was our first time here, so I just picked the one with the most good reviews. My family found our way to Tram's Kitchen, and the family who owns the place is very nice, but we were left soooo disappointed because the food was not good at all. Keep in mind that my parents have run asian restaurants and that my mom makes pho all the time, simmering the bone broth for days. We know good food. Tram's kitchen has nice people, but they do not have good food. My younger brother got the summer rolls. Those are very easy to make and I frequently make them for myself. They're pretty hard to mess up, but the ones from Tram's seemed very old. The noodles and even the outer wrapping tasted as if they had been sitting out for days. My mom got the rice and pork chop dish. This, along with pho, is a vietnamese staple, and we've had it many times. The rice was hard and the pork chop was extremely dry. I got the pho dac biet, and just like the other dishes,it was such a disappointment. The broth was bland and rather cold, The meat looked like it had been shredded beyond repair. We pride ourselves on being part of The Clean Plates Club, but we could not finish our meal. Maybe they were having a very off day when I went here, or maybe the people who have given them great reviews haven't had good Vietnamese food before. All in all, my family went to Tram's Kitchen hungry, and we left Tram's Kitchen still hungry but also very disappointed and sad. PGH doesn't have a huge wealth of vietnamese places to choose from (I'm from east of Cleveland, and Cleveland's ChinaTown is full of great places), but if you're looking for a place much better than this one, head to Pho Minh in Bloomfield. read more

Oh my gosh this review is going to get weird, but anyway. My nephew needed to take his car to the dealership in Bloomfield, he asked if I wanted to go. As I am originally from Bloomfield and only go back about once a year I said sure. Then I thought about Tram's and said that I saw them on Yelp and would love to go back there again. (It has been about 25 years since I was last there). Well anyway we went looking for Tram's and couldn't find it so I was like, "I'm positive that it's here", (Penn Avenue, close to Garfield.) Whelp finally I'm like "there it is", but it was all boarded up :( but alas after going on line again we found that they had moved about 15 blocks farther down on Penn Avenue closer to Lawrenceville. When we pulled up I was like, "omg, really??? This used to be a pizza shop and I lived on the third floor for like a year 35 years ago!!!". We came into Tram's, the owner was the same guy who owned the other one, and he looked EXACTLY the same as he did 25 years ago and I was like that can't be him but it was. So I asked him when they had moved to the current location and he said 22 years ago. I said did this used to be a pizza shop? He said "yes". I said, "omg I lived upstairs on the 3rd floor about 35 years ago. TOOOO funny! They even go to St. Joe's Church. Blast from the past! Whew! Anyway, guy was super nice, fresh rolls were outstanding, and beef pho was on point. (Meat was a little on the fatty side though). Stuff like this makes me miss Bloomfield. read more

Trams kitchen is by far my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Pittsburgh. I always order pho when I come, and it has never fail to disappoint. They're very authentic and tasty. I should branch out and try something else next time. I will update my review if I do. The only thing I have to complain is that they only accept cash. This place is my ultimate comfort food. The pho is unbeatable. (i like ineffable but i think tram's pho is better.) the broth is just exquisite. I used to live around the corner and walk here with my roommates and the servers always knew my order. For 11 am on a Saturday morning, the teeming scene down on the Strip District, where the Internet had guided us tourists and where we first sought out an early casual lunch, seemed crowded and chaotic. We jumped back on Liberty Avenue and kept heading northeast. A few minutes later the wife's phone pulled up Tram's. We parked right in front, and in we went, because I'll eat Vietnamese food, and especially pho, at the drop of a hat (and the wife will do so with not too much more prompting). Tram's was a pleasant surprise. For a Vietnamese place outside the big coastal metros, this one's older and mom-and-pop. The décor isn't much to look at, and the only sounds were a blaring TV and a video-poker machine. But the food was quite good: By Vietnamese standards, the menu's pretty short, but there was basic pho with beef and meatballs that was rock-solid. The broth had some depth to it, and the beef was done a bit differently: Instead of the usual super-thin-sliced beef, this was almost like pulled beef, but tender and tasty. The one-armed older fellow who waited on us is, I believe, one of the long-time owners. Even though this restaurant has been around for some time, something got lost in translation with my wife's order: She asked for the bun (vermicelli bowl) with tofu, but ended up with a vegetarian pho. She pronounced it "too healthy," which I take to mean bland, but for a vegetarian pho I thought the broth was quite rich and good. After meeting two people who claim Tram's Kitchen to be their favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Pittsburgh, you know a place has to be good, right? Tram's Kitchen truly encompasses an authentic Vietnamese home, with the cheap plastic table cloths and Asian black art hanging on the walls. We ordered the fresh spring rolls, vermicelli with coconut milk, and vermicelli with a mix of meats. A quick disclaimer: I grew up eating Vietnamese food so I have pretty high standards as far as Vietnamese food goes. So the food didn't really compare to what I'm used to at home. However, it was still pretty darn tasty. In fact, I now know three people who claim Tram's to be their favorite Vietnamese restaurant, the new addition being my husband. The food was fresh and flavorful, and the service was quick. I really felt a sense of family here too, oddly. Maybe it's because it reminded me of being at home. I loved everything I ate here. The wonton soup with egg noodles was definitely my favorite. We also had the pork & shrimp spring rolls which were delicious, especially with the dipping sauce provided. And! I have been going to Trams since the late 90s and it has been one of my favs since then. Last reviewed it in 2007 (4 star). Was there last night after a long time and sad to say it is a marginal place now. Very little has changed in the past 25 years. Still looks like you are in the family room of a Vietnamese family. They watch tv, eat and do their own bills at nearby tables. The menu is still the exact same-- small and cryptic. But the is just possible. I got a pho with shrimp and my companion got a spicy curry w rice. The pho broth was tepid and flavorless. The bean sprouts and basil leaves on the side were less than fresh. The curry was better but the rice was cold and lumpy. Explains why only a few tables were taken on a Friday night while we couldn't find a table at a nearby restaurant. read more

One day along time ago I moved from Los Angeles where there is Pho as far as the eye could see to Pittsburgh where selection is very limited. I found this place yelp first day in pittsburgh and since then has completely redefined what Pho is suppose to taste like. I ate here easily twice a week, keeping it simple with pho and fresh spring rolls. This place gets a bad rap for having a hole in the wall vibe. Most of the best places have this look and feel! I visit Pittsburgh frequently and had been looking forward to trying out this place after having read the reviews. Wow... The guy really knows his trade. The food is on par if not better than the majority of well known/respected vietnamese places in Los Angeles. BTW, the owner is hilarious. Someone mentioned in another review he was a mind reader... I totally get it. Lol. Since it was our first time there, we had no clue on what to get, we were stumbling over ourselves when the owner comes over and says "YOU. Get this." And points at the menu. I have been feeling very sluggish and found out that I am lacking in dietary fiber. It's hard to make good food from scratch during the week bc of my busy schedule. A great friend of mine suggested loading up on Pho a few times a week. I decided to try the vegetarian tofu Pho and veggie spring roles. Everything was so crisp and fresh, bean sprouts, lime, and a sweet spicey sauce. I again had the spicy prawns but this time I noticed the chili sauce tasted a lot like ketchup. I am not a fan of ketchup but hell I can understand using it as a base for a chili sauce it just doesn't set well with me for Vietnamese food but I guess I can undertand it for Pittsburgh Vietnamese...it make sense. I like this resturant , but forgot it was cash only and I swear the owner blocked my way from the exit while I withdrew cash from the atm...Yeah I didn't like that feeling too much. Really good food here, I ordered the beef pho and my friend ordered Pork noodle soup. The food came out really quick, but we're a bit disappointed that the basil wasn't fresh, it was wilted with a couple fresh leaves mixed in. Then in the middle of our meal, this guy came up and placed the check right on top of the plate where I had mixed some sauce for my beef. I'm pretty sure they don't clean the check tray frequently, definitely don't appreciate that. Also a bit disappointed that they don't have beef meat balls or tribe. Food was okay but high cahirs were terribly dirty. You don't want to bring your little one here. Service was below average. They accept cash only. They never give you changes...they think all the changes are tips so get some small bills before visit. I am typically okay with no frill service especially for these kinds of restaurants but Tram's kitchen's service was even below the bar. read more

For Pittsburg, this is the best Pho. The never have Basil, say that the Pho is very good. By DC, NOVA standards it is a bit above average, but for Pittsburg it cannot be beat. I have been to 100s of Pho restaurants around the US, I travel a lot. Also, I have been to most Pho restaurants in Pittsburg and they are either horrible or well below average. I live 2-7 minutes to 2 Pho restaurants in South hills and they are not good at all. So I will give Tram's Kitchen a 5 rating in Pittsburg, if in NOVA a 3. Best Pho in NOVA is Pho 75 and the Golden Cow, if every there try those and you will truly see the best in Pho. read more

Family cooking!! Classic Pittsburgh spot. Amazing rich flavors, tons of vegan options. The appetizer "lemongrass tofu" looks like a square of fried tofu and rice... But taste like nothing I've ever tasted before. So special. Love classic vegetarian PHO, Love the fresh spring rolls, love the strange but wonderful curry, and love the coconut noodles. Do hope that someday they stop using Styrofoam. I know it's hard right now... They used to be very kind and let me use my own containers for it to go. Absolutely terrible service, pho was not good and they're Sriracha bottles don't even have sriracha in them, they're literally filled with hot sauce. One of the old man there was giving me a very a difficult time and began arguing with me at the restaurant. Overall a terrible experience and go spend your money else where.
