One of my go to spots for years! As a college student, this place was awesome. Surrounded by tons of cafes and study spots and nothing hits better than a post study session pho! No longer in college but the food is so nostalgic for me now. The menu is vast and offers a ton of authentic viet food options! I am a huge fan of pho dac biet aka pho with all the fixings! Fine. This is a perfectly reasonable Vietnamese destination, but it's short of great. The interior is reasonably clean and well managed, but it's not a high end space. The food is decent but not great. We ordered takeout, and the overall experience was good. The ordering page worked reasonably well, and they were able to accept free-form requests around dietary needs. That said, I'm not sure why they don't just offer a tofu-based banh mi on their standard menu. In terms of the food, the banh mi was decent, but the roll wasn't the crusty baguette that I would expect. The lettuce wraps (shrimp) were good, with lots of fresh herbs but not very much lettuce. The salads were also lacking. The lotus salad didn't really seem to include any lotus (or much lettuce). The spicy mango shrimp salad was decent, but lacking some brightness of flavor. Some lime juice and/or fish sauce might have kicked it up a bit. The yellow curry was a bit of a disaster: basically just rice noodles with a few vegetables and light yellow seasoning. I don't think we would order that again. All told, I'm happy to support this place. It's just not the best Vietnamese food around. There are plenty of good options in other parts of town. read more

The food was incredible - we got a wide array of dishes. The noodle bowl (bun thit nuong, I think) was incredible. Fresh grilled pork, snappy pickles, and a lot of herbs. My favorite dish was the sugar cane shrimp lettuce wrap (incredible complexity, a joy of textures, and hot and cold parts). It was an absolute blast to eat this dish. Now that it's after Labor Day and basically fall, it's phở weather and one of my favorite phở places in Pittsburgh is Tan Lac Vien in Squirrel Hill! We stopped by the no frills spot last week and got our food super quickly and were in and out in no time. It's very basic inside which minimal decorations. The beef was way over cooked, and there were way more tendons than beef. The tendons were nice, and the overall flavor was ok. Located in a less trendy neighborhood in Pittsburgh, this place gives off the vibe that it serves no frills authentic and tasty Viet food. Luckily for me, that vibe was real and if you're looking to scratch that itch for pho or other Viet staples, this place is for you. The menu has a plethora of classic dishes like pho, bun bo hue, spring rolls as well as more exotic dishes like banh xeo for diners to try. The summer rolls were good but there were a bit too many bean sprouts rolled into them (just a personal preference). Spring rolls were good - crispy and lots of porky goodness. The grilled pork hash on vermicelli was so good and it was really great to see this item since it's pretty much disappeared from many menus in the NYC area. Banh xeo (crepe) was also on point but they give you 2 massive ones when one would be enough. Portions here are pretty generous. I'm originally from Pittsburgh but have lived in the Philadelphia, PA area for over 40 years. Philly has a significant Vietnamese community and a plethora of Pho restaurants in and around the city. On our most recent visit to the Burgh we decided to search for a good Vietnamese Pho spot in the East end of town. Saw that this spot was pretty highly rated on Yelp and decided to take the plunge. They asked me to pay over the phone and brought my food outside of the entrance because they did not want customers entering the restaurant. My wife and I each got one of the 'BV' meals (that's how they are labeled on the menu). Nice meals - you get meat over a bed of white rice noodles, a generous helping of salad greens and picked carrots/sprouts, and a crispy pork spring roll on the side, plus dipping sauce. She got pork/shrimp combo and I got beef. Both were good and the meal was quite filling. The spring roll in particular was so delicious with minced pork and spices. We also shared a salad/summer roll appetizer. We got two rolls, each with pork loin and shrimp plus some rice noodles and greens, all wrapped in a thin noodle. As a viet transplant to Pittsburgh area I was missing pho. It's been so hard to find a good pho place that makes the broth right. I ordered the beef pho with meatballs and I was super impressed. We visited Tan Lac Vien last week on a short trip from Western New York. I agree with other diners who found Tan Lac Vien's pho broths to have enormous flavor. I can't remember when I've had better chicken pho and we spent 40+ years if the SF Bay Area of California, where large populations of Vietnamese reside. Even there, Tan Lac Vien would be a stand out. Service is wonderful in the lovely way that only family-owned restaurants really know how to do - friendly and inclusive. Dishes are clearly made with care and are artfully arranged. Everything tastes super fresh. It is unfortunate that we live so far away, but we do visit Pittsburgh every few months for medical appointments. You can be sure that Tan Lac Vien will be at the top of our travel itinerary from now on. read more

It was suppose to come with pork but there was no pork, although this is the first time I have ever gotten that much shrimp inside. I was shocked I didn't even notice there wasn't any pork. It was still very good. My husband and son both got the pho special combo and the broth was phenomenal! How a pho broth should taste. Taste like they been boiling the bones over night. Very clean and clear broth! It was perfect! I ordered the Bun Bo Hue. It was also very delicious! I got spice level 7 and it was almost to spicy! the broth was flavorful! I love this restaurant! I've only gotten one meal here - the combo special but it is freaking delicious! I've only done take-out from Tan Lac Vien and it's always warm and ready to eat once delivered. The portion size is very large and reasonable for the price. The first time I ordered here, I didn't realize it came with peanuts on top (which I'm low key allergic to). The food was too good to not eat so I just picked the peanuts off - ha! I am lucky I can do that with my allergy. Anyways, the next time I ordered from there, I requested no peanuts and they gladly obliged. Can't wait to try the pho sometime, soon! read more
