    Tofu fresh rolls. (as packaged)
    Mike B.

Fine. This is a perfectly reasonable Vietnamese destination, but it's short of great. The interior is reasonably clean and well managed, but it's not a high end space. The food is decent but not great. We ordered takeout, and the overall experience was good. The ordering page worked reasonably well, and they were able to accept free-form requests around dietary needs. That said, I'm not sure why they don't just offer a tofu-based banh mi on their standard menu. In terms of the food, the banh mi was decent, but the roll wasn't the crusty baguette that I would expect. The lettuce wraps (shrimp) were good, with lots of fresh herbs but not very much lettuce. The salads were also lacking. The lotus salad didn't really seem to include any lotus (or much lettuce). The spicy mango shrimp salad was decent, but lacking some brightness of flavor. Some lime juice and/or fish sauce might have kicked it up a bit. The yellow curry was a bit of a disaster: basically just rice noodles with a few vegetables and light yellow seasoning. I don't think we would order that again. All told, I'm happy to support this place. It's just not the best Vietnamese food around. There are plenty of good options in other parts of town.

Shrimp Paste on a Sugarcane Skewer Wrap

The food was incredible - we got a wide array of dishes. The noodle bowl (bun thit nuong, I think) was incredible. Fresh grilled pork, snappy pickles, and a lot of herbs. My favorite dish was the sugar cane shrimp lettuce wrap (incredible complexity, a joy of textures, and hot and cold parts). It was an absolute blast to eat this dish. The only thing is that their banh mi bread was a little tough and dense, but I'm splitting hairs. Shout out to the fabulous and friendly service.

3.5 Stopped by because we were craving noodles are ordered the beef/tendon pho, bun bo hue, lemongrass pork bun and banh xeo. The lemongrass pork was juicy and very well seasoned and came with a great chili/rice vinegar based sauce that went well with the springy noodles. The flank in the bun bo hue was tender but the soups for both the pho and the bun bo hue fell pretty flat, I wish there had been more depth to them. The banh xeo was also not crispy. Portion sizes were very large. I'll likely only come back for the lemongrass pork dishes

Now that it's after Labor Day and basically fall, it's phở weather and one of my favorite phở places in Pittsburgh is Tan Lac Vien in Squirrel Hill! We stopped by the no frills spot last week and got our food super quickly and were in and out in no time. It's very basic inside which minimal decorations. Everything was filling, comforting, and the perfect colder weather food! They gave us only one check for the table which wasn't a big deal since we all have Venmo. What we got: Crispy chicken dumplings Chạo tôm aka shrimp paste on sugarcane skewers, just like how grandma used to make! Spicy sate soup with rice noodles in spicy lemongrass soup with beef, flank, and ham Beef phở

Very good. Authentic. The Pho is excellent. I've only done takeout, so I cannot speak for the ambience or interior of the restaurant- but the takeout is good. I love their spring rolls. So fresh, they use such good ingredients The portions are large and everything is packed really nice. Will definitely be getting it again and again when I crave it

Beef and flank pho and pork banh mi.

First time having pho. Had beef and flank. Also had pork bahn mi. Everything was so wonderful! Highly recommend!

I ordered togo from here many times (because there's not a lot of good bbh options around here), and was disappointed most of the time. The taste of the bun bo hue was not consistent. This time, I got a very overcooked, broken vermicelli. I don't see how this is acceptable to serve to customers.

Solid Vietnamese spot in Squirrel Hill. It's a very small, mom and pop type restaurant with a limited amount of unpretentious seating. They have a ton of options on the menu. I've gotten the summer rolls, vermicelli bowl with pork spring rolls, and wonton soup with egg noodles, and everything has been pretty tasty. Ingredients always feel fresh. The portions are also massive too! There usually isn't a wait here so this is a great option if you're looking for a place for a quick casual but filling lunch.

Takeout order of chicken pho and viet iced coffee
    Anna W.

First and foremost great pho broth. Highly flavorful and more southern-style. Might not be your speed if you prefer a subtler profile. Came with regular sides + hoisin and culantro. I got takeout so I can't speak to the service. It did come out super fast, like within minutes. Moderately suspicious but I was in a rush so it worked out fine. I also got a viet iced coffee. I do prefer those to be freshly made, which it was too fast to be, but it tastes great regardless. Not too sweet. Inside is modest and simple. Relatively clean. A few flies around. I think this restaurant is perfect for fast takeout but not my ideal sit-down dinner.

Beef pho (with beef rib, cost extra $6.50), Grilled chicken sandwich, cheese wontons
    Lilipad L.

We ordered beef pho, grilled chicken sandwiches, and cheese wontons. The beef are over cooked, chicken are a bit dry. And cheese wontons are good. This place sits inside of the Nova Asian Foodhall, which has mix of cool Asian vibes. The services is pretty much self service.

Great selection of Vietnamese food in this lil place. Their pho broth is pretty delicious. I would come back for a quick fix of Vietnamese food nearby.

Insanely good chicken pho that came with a huge portion of rice noodles. The sauces they included were also very good, and I will definitely be coming back!

For a 15 dollar banh mi, it was bland with no flavor at all. Don't even know how that's possible.

The filling has more spice forward than am used to-- more of an allspice or anise type flavor? Not bad. Just more prominent. very good soup overall. Lots of green onion. Nice broth. We had the "egg rolls". They are in actuality Cha Gio. Not Chinese restaurant type egg rolls. In other restaurants they are called "spring rolls" (deep fried) . Here apparently the spring rolls are the fresh uncooked rolls. The Cha Gio were good! Note--CASH ONLY. We didn't realize this until we sat down. Fortunately we had enough green paper. And there is an ATM near by per the staff. Also note the prices on the menu are not what they are charging for some things. And things look to have gotten more expensive. As example. The wonton soup is $13 on the physical in restaurant menu but $15 on our bill. And I saw an online picture of the menu of $1.95 for the egg rolls and spring rolls. They are now $6 on the current menu. This is an old school Vietnamese hole in the wall pho place. Paper napkins, plastic chop sticks and vinyl table cloths. 5/5 for what it is. Would definitely return for the Cha Gio. Kid gives thumbs up for the Pho and would Return for that also.

It is pretty small inside and there are a few tables outside. You order at the counter or can order by phone or online. Usually I order online and every time I have walked in to find it bagged and ready to go. They did change ordering systems a few months ago which had a few kinks to work out. The food is mostly sandwiches and rice or vermicelli bowls. There also is soup, summer rolls and a cucumber salad. In addition they have coffee and tea, lemonade and bubble tea. I have not tried any drinks but I would like to. My go to is the Feelin' Tofu Banh Mi which has the tofu, veggies and yummy sauce and I like to add some jalapeños for some kick. The bread is flavorful with a little crunch that holds up pretty well. The veggies give such a light tasty crunch. I do feel that the sandwich could do with a little more on it portion wise both for value but also to be more balanced with the amount of bread. It is a tasty sandwich though. We also like to get the tofu summer rolls. The balance here can be a bit off with too much lettuce. However, the sauce is absolutely delicious and could make just about anything taste good. This is a great place to stop by for lunch or dinner (but beware they close at 6) or just to grab a drink during the day. We like to pick up the food to take to a brewery to eat. It is usually pretty easy to find street parking close by. Friendly service and tasty food.

Definitely one of the cheaper places to get it so I'm not complaining and it was perfect on a cold day. Service was great, pretty quick and very accommodating. They also had a small seating area tucked in the back that was nice and quiet to get work done or chat, as well as outside too, but most people get it to go.
