First pho experience: check! I've been wanting to try an authentic pho spot for a few years now, and after seeing a movie at the newly renovated Hollywood theater, my friends and I visited New Saigon for a cozy dinner. The space is quite small and very straightforward, but you can smell the delicious food from the street outside before you even step foot in the door. The table included hoisin sauce, sriracha, chili paste, and pickled peppers, and the menu was concise. I ordered rare beef pho and fresh spring rolls. Everything was SO tasty and tasted very fresh. No frills, but clean & authentic place to get Vietnamese food in Dormont. It's street parking, but there are some side streets nearby too where you can park for 2 hours without a permit. Our server was friendly and prompt and the food came out quickly. I had a craving for a chicken vermicelli bowl and the one here totally met my expectations. Solid spot for Vietnamese food. Not a ton of this cuisine in Pittsburgh, especially in Dormont, so it's nice to see a spot like this. I got takeout. Honestly, I think the rating would be higher if I went in person. It's the kind of spot that doesn't really work well for takeout but may be quite good in person. Regardless, I got the wonton hu tieu and the pineapple boba milk tea with strawberry and passion fruit popping boba. The wonton hu tieu was quite unique. If you get takeout, they have the broth, the noodles, and the vegetables separate for you to assemble. The plastic container the noodles are placed in is too small to fit all the broth they give. Flavor wise, the broth was strangely a bit sweet. There were too many green onions for my liking as well. The noodles were alright, but nothing special. They were also somewhat clumped in the takeout. The wontons were the best part. They had a nice amount of filling (which seemed to be some kind of meat but I can't say which kind). The other meat on top was pretty fatty and just not really my favorite but it's nice to have a double meat portion. The boba was very good, though. It was a tad bit on the expensive side, but the quality was great. Sweet and perfectly milky. The boba was fresh and had great flavor. All in all, this is a solid spot. It's just that I think it would be better in person than with takeout, and the broth wasn't exactly my favorite. But the boba was great and I'm willing to give it another shot. read more

I'm torn on rating this place, because on one hand the food is absolutely terrific. On the other hand, however, the customer service is absolutely atrocious. I came to dine on 1/14/2024 and the restaurant was pretty busy. However, that shouldn't mean customers should wait 30 minutes before even being acknowledged by the staff. It's very clear that the staff cannot handle busy times efficiently. After being sat, it took another 20 minutes to get a drink (after reminding the server twice) and my appetizer was already out at the table by that point. The crispy chicken dumplings were exactly as the menu described, with 8 stuffed dumplings to an order. I ordered the combination Pho and was pleased with the taste and portion size. It came out very hot, there was plenty of beef and the broth was very hearty. The restaurant itself is quite small so it does get cramped inside very quickly. It's not ideal for large parties and there isn't much room to move around in the restaurant. So be prepared to have people standing right by your tables if there's any sort of wait. Overall, the food was enjoyable but the service left a lot to be desired. While the staff was working hard, it's hard to look past their lack of professionalism and customer service during the busy rush. Pho is my love language! And my favorite place is New Saigon in Dormont. It's a warm restaurant on the corner of Potomac and Glenmore. I usually park on the street but there is also a pay lot behind the restaurant. Take out is fast and the inside booths are cozy. I usually get a hot tea, crispy spring rolls and pho. I saved this place on Yelp as one to visit when I got back to Pittsburgh for school..... and then I promptly got COVID upon my return. Luckily, my friend was ordering delivery from here and offered to get me a bowl during my quarantine and I'm SO glad she did. I ordered the rare beef pho. I genuinely think I could put this broth in a water bottle and carry it around with me for when my thirst needs quenching. In general, I associate pho with having a bit of a lighter broth, and usually having that lighter broth means sacrificing some flavor or flavor depth. I somehow found that this broth was simultaneously light AND was rich with flavor. Definitely a BTR (Broth To Remember). I heated it up when I got it so that the beef would cook. They included plenty of toppings (I'm talking bean sprouts, basil, lime, the works) and the portion was pretty substantial. The only down side was that the noodles were a bit mushy. It may be because of the transport, or it may not be. Either way, I am looking forward to going to the restaurant in person so that I can try a bowl when it's fresh! read more

I haven't eaten in the restaurant as I've only ordered takeout. However when I order takeout it is always super fresh and packed well to avoid sogginess before you can eat. I love their grilled pork bun only $16 and spring rolls $7. They're very flavorful, fresh, healthy and light on the stomach without breaking the bank for a good meal. My daughter was hungry and had mentioned New Saigon. She's had prior experience with New Saigon and was happy with them, so I agreed when she wanted to get takeout. My first order from New Saigon I decided to stick with 'safe' orders to gauge whether I'd be a returning customer and I have to say yes. I ordered Fresh Spring rolls and the beef Pad Thai, definitely tasty and just what I was expecting. The Fresh Spring rolls were nice and chewy, filled with fresh veggies, noodles, shrimp, bits of pork and mint or basil. The peanut dipping sauce had a light topping of Siracha sauce which made a great combo for the Fresh Spring Rolls, a definite taste of goodness. My Beef Pad Thai was a generous portion. The noodles were not the wide cut Pad Thai noodles I've had at other establishments, but more like the noodles one might see in Pho. None the less, the dish had good amounts of tender, tasty beef, and a great flavor overall. Not sure what else to add to my first try of New Saigon, but that I will definitely keep them on my radar for my Vietnamese food fix. Living near Dormont and having another option for good food makes me a happy camper. read more

It's a small place and not too much seating but was there on a Friday night and it didn't get too packed but definitely more people came in as the night went on. The restaurant itself doesn't seem the cleanest, though, but it seemed fine. We ordered the fresh spring rolls which weren't my favorite, they were a bit chewy and i did not like how they put the Vietnamese ham inside of them. It made it taste a bit gamey which threw me off for sure. The pork skewers were delicious but way too small. They're accompanied with mint, basil, noodles and lettuce to wrap them in with a sweet sauce. I loved that dish, just wish they had more or were bigger for the price. We both ordered the spicy lemongrass soup but substituted for chicken and my mom just did rare beef. Let me tell you, it was definitely spicy! I think the level of spiciness took away from the flavor, sadly, though. It definitely could have been way more lemongrass-y and i felt like there was hardly any chicken in my bowl, my mom agreeing with her rare beef. They did not skimp on the noodles, though. I was a little confused at how thick the noodles were, too. The aromatics and such you put in pho were plentiful, which i appreciated. Brand new kid on the block with another offering of authentic Vietnamese cuisine (several weeks young). It's so new that all their new restaurant signs still haven't made it up yet - the old MeKong name continues to display prominently outside. I am like that band U2 - "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" when it comes to perfect Viet food. Hopes are high here. The owners aren't new to the food scene though possessing previous knowledge of running successful, similar businesses. Like any new outfits, the kinks must be experienced and worked out as they test out various rice dishes, noodle bowls and appetizers; this is particularly important as the neighborhood you serve can dictate the more popular dishes. The first couple of visits have been quite promising and the bosses were serious about making things true; true meaning adhering to the flavors of their homeland. Here is a sampling of my treks there: Egg rolls - epic crunch. Fish sauce is just right. A tiny spoonful of chili paste to kick it up. Vegetables to wrap included as well: various mints, herbs and lettuce to wrap. Most places just give rolls and sauce. Well done. Nem Lui - pork sausage skewers. Unique to only New Saigon and highly recommended order every visit. Noticeably absent is the all important peanut sauce however it is not required to experience these meats on a stick. The fish sauce works just fine with the veggies. Thin rice papers are provided to wrap. Pho - hardy, hot, huge, and heaping portions of rice noodles and all the trimmings (meatball, brisket slices, sliced beef, tendon, tripe and meatballs). Interesting ingredient in their condiment dish: rice paddy herbs, it adds a citrus flavor in combination with the lime and basil. Pork Chop Rice dish combo - IMHO the "go-to" dish I would come back for time and time again. Marinaded and grilled pork chop filled the spotlight with the fresh shredded pork topping. Add that fried egg, the familiar fish sauce amd you've got yourself a heck of a meal. I plan to return amd I think you know that already. read more

My friends and I visited New Saigon for the first time over the weekend and we all left the restaurant feeling amazed! To start we tried the fresh spring rolls and these were by far the best spring rolls I have had. Not only were they a great size and packed with flavor, but the homemade sauce these spring rolls were served with was amazing. For the entrees most of us ended up ordering the General T'SO Chicken with lo-mein instead of rice. Hands down, this was the best General T'SO's Chicken I have ever had. The portion size was extremely generous, the chicken was cooked perfectly and was crispy, and the sauce for this dish had the perfect ratio of sweetness to tanginess. I loved this dish and would definitely order it again. We also received a very generous portion of lo-mein noodles with this dish that also tasted incredible. In addition to the outstanding food that we received, the service was also fantastic. Our waitress was incredibly attentive and ensured that we had a fantastic dining experience. Great new addition to Dormont! We've now ordered take-out from New Saigon twice, and were very pleased with the food and service both times. The first time we ordered the New Saigon Pho Special and the Pork and Shrimp Hu Tieu. Both were delicious and we were especially impressed with the generous servings of fresh herbs and meat (also noting the perfectly cooked shrimp). The Hu Tieu was new to me--similar to Pho but with a pork-based broth, and so great on a cold winter evening. We'd ordered the New Cua (crispy crab spring rolls) but they were out and offered to substitute the Bo La Lot (grilled minced beef with herbs, etc.), which was also generously portioned, fresh, and delicious. Soups were a little on the cool side by the time we got them, but they heated up easily in the microwave, and we figure a few hiccups are inevitable in newly-opened restaurants. On our second round, we ordered hot and sour soup, fresh spring rolls, tofu chow fun, and the crown jewel of the evening, the grilled pork chop rice plate. All were good, although the chow fun was somewhat less flavorful than the other things we've tried. However, as noted by another reviewer, the pork chop plate is really something special. Very generous serving and everything perfectly prepared, including a runny egg and super flavorful, tender, and juicy pork chops. Really too much food for a single entree, but I couldn't stop myself and ate it all. Finally, service has been super friendly and considerate each time, so my only wish is that they eventually add my favorite dish from Mekong--the banh xeo. read more
