Maiku Vietnamese Phở in the Strip is tiny and unassuming but looks can be deceiving! I counted 18 seats in the whole places and they did brisk business the whole time I was there. I had to order all of my favorite Vietnamese classics. The gỏi cuốn aka spring rolls were so fresh and the chả giò was perfectly crispy. I loved the deluxe bánh mì which is basically a bánh mì đặc biệt - it was packed to the brim with ingredients and the bread tasted fresh. This is a great authentic spot for Vietnamese food in the city! They do banh mis, noodle soups and rice dishes here. Service is nice and super fast. Ambiance was good too, they were packed on a Wednesday night. I liked the banh mi, it had good bread and they have the traditional ones with pate and head cheese too. I liked the pho a lot, there was a lot of noodle and the broth was delicious. I couldn't quite try the bun Bo hue because of my shrimp allergy but friends liked it and definitely brought the heat. If you want to look at the inflation closely, look at the old menu that's posted on yelp for this restaurant and look at the picture of the menu that I'm posting - the price essentially doubled. By the looks of it it's a husband and wife team running and managing this restaurant. Both seem to be very involved and super sweet. I live in California where Vietnamese restaurants are on every other corner and to my surprise this tiny hole in the wall Mom and Pop place was more expensive than most of the Vietnamese restaurants in one of the most expensive states in US. My Pho #5 was $18 and this particular soup is $15.99 at most on the West Coast. Of course they can charge anything they want, but I know that rent prices are more insane in downtown Los Angeles than they are in downtown Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, the amount of meat was not impressive and for $15.99 in Los Angeles or San Jose you get much more meat in this particular soup than I got here for 18 bucks. I asked for my rare steak to be on the side. They said "no". The only reason why someone would say no to this is if their meat is not visually appealing or not as fresh. I asked for Nuc Beo, which is skipped Fat with green onion and that also gave them a pause. The flavor of the soup was heavy on the spices, but I don't think they're boiling their beef bone as long as they could, as the broth was not as fragrant from the beef. Nevertheless, I had a really great experience and they were very polite and I still ate the soup so giving them less than three stars would not be fair. I ordered a Bahn Mi sandwich to go. Here it's called a hoagie. So they're definitely serving white people in this neighborhood. It was very dry, not visual, appealing, and I was disappointed in flavor. I had an extremely unpleasant experience here today. My dining companion and I waited a long time for our food, only to notice that customers who were seated after us had already received the same dishes we ordered. I calmly and politely asked a staff member about our order. Instead of a simple explanation, the staff member responded with a dismissive and condescending attitude, as if we were causing a scene. Shortly after, both the staff and the owner told us to leave the restaurant. No customer deserves to be treated this way for asking a simple, reasonable question. Very authentic and delicious Pho. It's a small dining room, but the staff are friendly and make everyone gets seated quickly. The add-ons come on a small plate, and that's what I like to see: sprouts, Thai basil, cilantro and lime. Portions are generous. I didn't try the Banh Mi, but I hear it's excellent. read more

We picked up takeout on a Sunday afternoon and tag teamed it because parking is pretty slim pickings near the restaurant. I ran in and my better half circled the block. We tried the Banh Mi Pork hoagie which was a little too heavy on the bread and not stuffed enough. The flavor was good but the ratio was off. Their Com Ga Nuong (grilled chicken over rice) with a cuke salad and delicious fish sauce was really terrific and healthy. We also tried their Chicken and Beef Pho dishes which came nicely packaged for take-out so everything didn't get soggy. The broth had nice star anise flavoring and the jalapenos and bean sprouts were fresh. The Goi Cuon shrimp spring roll was very tasty too. We visited for my daughter's 21st birthday. She had recommended this place since her Vietnamese friend said it was her favorite and closest to home cooking. It's small and simple but the outstanding food in the most friendly service made all the difference. We tried the beef meatballs, spring rolls Had the beef pho and several other dishes everything was very, very delicious. We will definitely be back. Actually perfect pho. I tried the bun bo hue which is a spicy beef pho with round noodles. It was... ACTUALLY PERFECT. Every element was spot on. Optimal spice and salt levels, impeccable broth flavor, good amounts of beef, and plenty of garnish. I went to Bae Bae's cafe earlier today and got a bahn mi and it was... hideous. Soft bread, almost no meat, and doused in way too much spicy mayo. I didn't get a bahn mi here at Maiku but I can already tell based on the quality of the pho that it would absolutely destroy Bae Bae's. Oh and the bahn mi at Maiku is $4 cheaper. The staff was personable and friendly. The environment is very casual which is how you know the food is legit. The food came out in less than 15 minutes. Overall this is easily the best food we've had in Pittsburgh so far. read more

New fave pho spot!! Went today, and it's the best pho we've had in Pgh. It's super small, a hole-in-the-wall sized place with just 6 tables, and it's SO good. Their pho broth is delicious. They serve it with white onion/scallion in the bowl but *cilantro* on the side which is amazing for people like me who hate cilantro - no chance of even a fleck in my bowl. They also keep crispy chili oil on the table to add and it was amazing! Also had a honeydew milk tea and hubs had Thai tea, both yum! First off, if I could, I would give this 4.5 stars as it truly was nearly perfect in every way and a 4 just doesn't feel right...oh well... I called in an order this evening for a Goi Cuon (shrimp/pork spring roll), a Pho Tai (round eye steak pho) and the Grilled Pork Bahn Mi sandwich to share with my wife. It was borderline too much food, but we had had a light lunch and were exceptionally hungry. Even at 6pm on a Saturday night the wait was very reasonable and I was told my food would be ready 15-20 minutes later. I showed up at the appointed time and my meal was hot and ready for the short drive home. At $22 dollars before tax and tip I feel this is a phenomenal price and money well spent. Because it was take out, my meal was in several different containers and I combined the pho components in my own bowl once I got home. I share this as an FYI because that would not be an easy meal to attempt to eat in a car or elsewhere. The spring roll was generous and came with two pieces and ample dipping sauce with peanuts. The ingredients were fresh and the lettuce wasn't wilted. The bahn mi was incredible! The pork was well cooked and nicely marinated, the French bread wasn't soggy, and the toppings were plentiful. I especially like the light pickled flavor of the carrots and cucumber. The pho was large and warm with lots of Thai basil and sprouts and hot pepper slices. Not a ton of meat, but enough to get a little bit in just about every bite. There was also cilantro which was a first for me, but a nice addition. Herein is the only reason I'm given this a less-than-perfect review: the broth just wasn't flavorful... I know pho broth is often kind of muted, but none of the delicate flavors came through for me at all which was disappointing. Ultimately because the service was so speedy, the service so friendly, the food so tasty, and the price so inexpensive, I think I've found my new go-to spot. Hopefully I will be back soon to try the pho again to see if the broth is better the second time around. Fingers crossed. read more

Little Vietnamese place on the strip! Pretty good food, everything was fast and tasted fresh, the tofu marinade was nice and I liked their chili oil. A very simple interior but the lady working was really nice! Definitely good for a quick but filling lunch, especially if you work in the area! It's not full of the MSG taste. It was the real deal broth. The noodles were cooked perfectly, and they gave you a good amount of beef. The quality was amazing. We also shared a Hoagie Banh Mi sandwich, also very solid choice. The bun was so crispy and the ingredients inside were so clean and fresh. No greasy feeling taste either! Throw in the basil and bean sprouts and you're in business. Banh Mi - Pretty solid overall, tastes as you would expect for a banh mi. The jalapeños aren't too overwhelmingly spicy. The size is decent as well, but can also be good to share if you are hungry as I did. You can pick based on which protein you want, but the deluxe has a combination of more thinly sliced sandwich meats that could be a good starter if you don't know what to pick. One thing I do have to say was that my girlfriend and I passed out super hard after the meal, must have been the food coma but I'd say it was well worth. This place was a pleasant surprise! From the name, you would think that they only have Sushi but to my surprise, they also offer Pho, Vietnamese style rice dishes and appetizers as well! I walked and heard classic Vietnamese music playing in the background and thought to myself it is a good sign. I went on to order a pork chop over rice plate and nem nuong (sliced pork roll appetizer) to go. The pork chop is marinated in traditional Viet style with the right amount of flavor. A good tip here is to get the pork chop and rice only and not the pork chop and egg as you get more meat and better value. Horrible experience great food. I've been going to Michael's restaurant since it was at their older venue 10 years ago. They had a plaque on their wall with a picture of Russell Crowe, saying "The Actor Russell Crowe" It was great! Oddly for some reason, today they got so angry at my family for dining there. First, my sister is losing her hearing and she asked about a table for six, I guess too loud for Michael and his staff's taste. Then my sister asked for a fork and straws, I guess not to the staff's liking because their niece came out super mad. She kept asking my sister if there's a problem. It was like the "soup nazi" scene on Seinfeld....Michael came out and told us to leave and never come back...it was surreal. He literally kicked us out after serving our bowls of noodle soup. He said don't eat don't finish just leave...we did nothing wrong but spoke to each other too loud. They kept asking are we doing something wrong over and over too. It was so odd. read more
