Panang Curry
Miles K.

I'm always on the hunt for good Thai food and I somehow missed this spot in Springdale. I got to sample quite a few things as we had a group order. The crab rangoons were what I want my crab rangoons to be. They were crispy on top and just absolutely creamy inside. They had good flavor and I'd get these again any time. The Thai spring rolls were exactly how I enjoy them-Lots of cabbage and some carrot. They were tiny, but tasty and crispy. Shrimp Lava had tempura on it and a creamy sauce that had a hint of spice. I'd like them to have a bit more of a kick, but that's just my preference. The batter was crispy and the shrimp was tender. I tried pineapple fries rice with chicken and I was very happy with it. I ordered it at a level 6, and I think I'll look to go up to a 7 next time, but you'll certainly notice it at a 6. The chicken was cooked very nicely as it was tender. The veggies were also cooked nicely. I tried the eggplant with basil and the eggplant was cooked perfectly. It was as tender as I've ever had. The only issue I had is that it felt like the dish was more peppers and onions than anything and we'd all have liked more eggplant. My Wife had the sweet and sour chicken, not to be confused with the breaded chicken you'd often get in Chinese restaurants. My Wife upgraded to fried rice and she said it was fantastic, but she said she didn't like the chicken. For as tender as the proteins were in everything else, the chicken in this dish was very tough and chewy. I tried the Panang curry and was happy with it. The chicken and veggies were cooked nicely here. The curry stood out to me as I felt like it had a touch of spice that I'm not used to. It wasn't hot, but it was unique and I appreciated it. The restraint staff were very friendly and the inside looked very clean and orderly. The food was excellent outside of the chewy chicken in the sweet and sour and with the friendly staff and clean shop, I feel good about a 5.

Thai custard with sweet sticky rice

I heard there was a recently opened Thai spot in Springdale, so naturally, I had to try it out. I wanted to stop in just for a quick snack, so when placing an order for dinner delivery, I added an order of Dee Dee's Thai custard with sticky rice. The place itself is very hole in the wall from the outside. BUT, the food is very good. I didn't get to try much, but this was a great Thai custard. The portion was excellent (although the price is quite high on Doordash at $8, you can get it for $6 directly. For $6, this is a great portion). The flavors were exactly how you want them to be. It's subtly sweet, slightly eggy custard atop of delicious, slightly firm sticky rice with some coconut milk mixed in. If I was being picky, maybe a little more coconut milk would have been even better (like coconut milk splashed on top!) This place also serves all the Thai staples, like pad see ew, pad Thai, curries, dumplings, soups, rolls, salads, rangoons, fried rice, and so on. They also have some more unique items like BBQ, steam buns, zabb noodles, and others. Dee Dee even serves boba, ranging from Thai Tea milk tea to honeydew, mango, chocolate, strawberry, and even taro! All in all, I'm so thrilled to have this place in Springdale. They offer an excellent menu with good prices and some unique items as well. The Thai custard and sticky rice I tried tonight were awesome!

Place has four 2 person tables but can move them around. Water is great! Mango salad w chicken Medium spicy is low spicy to me, definitely taste the fish sauce, chicken little bit on tough side but good. mango is great, in season now, sliced tomatoes a nice kick. 8/10 Steamed dumpling- actually shu Mai, good by itself but really good with the dipping sauce, 8 or 9/10 Fish dish- was imagining a whole fish but maybe that's not popular in the 'Burgh, so it's fish pieces. Everything cooked well, green beans onions peppers. Didn't get much basil flavor at first, but hit me later. Little too salty, 7/10 Green curry with chicken, mild. Very nice flavor. Super good over the white rice. 9/10 We've been to Thailand and have been to multiple Thai places in the SF Bay Area and this place ranks up there with the best and original Thai flavors. Would not hesitate to come in again when in the area. Highly suggested.

This review is for The 98 (contemporary Thai restaurant)…read more High hopes. I was waiting for the opportunity to review this, but it's another case where I will be brutally honest while feeling mildly sheepish for being harsh. This place won't be in business a year from now. The ambiance is tacky. It was not only uncomfortable, but the jazz music was annoying. We ordered tea thinking it would be a small pot like you'd get at a typical Asian restaurant. Well for $4, you got to pick what commercial tea BAG you wanted. No thanks. There was NOTHING we liked on the menu. No Spring rolls. No summer rolls. No red curry chicken. They only had ultra-expensive "specialty" curries that were exotic in presentation but lacking in taste. We ordered the mussels. The portion size to cost ratio was tiny. They weren't particularly good and were the style you'd get at an all-you-can-eat buffet like at the Mills Mall (TJ's Buffet). They were $14; by comparison the ones that you get at Aldi are infinitely better. The chicken satay on skewers were tasty. I'll give them that. Yum. The Massaman curry was outrageously expensive, and lacked volume, vegetables, protein and taste. Nothing like I was used to. It was also very sugary sweet. The pumpkin curry was so salty it was almost inedible. Portion size was small. All meals came with a deep-fried dipping bread that was pure oil/grease. Naan would have been better. The staff was sweet. We appreciated their kindness and attentiveness. However, they acted like we never had Thai food before and were coaching us on how to eat it. (We are Thai food connoisseurs). Anxious to know what restaurant will be here in 2024. This feels scammy.

Jazz music softly played overhead. For a restaurant that had just opened the service was impeccable throughout the entire meal. Wait staff were attentive, but not intrusive. Chef Natalie was delightful as she visited tables, introducing herself and pleased to talk about the various dishes. She made sure that my wife's dishes were gluten free, assuring us that almost all of her dishes could be modified to be so. Then there was the food. Complimentary Taro Fries were new and tasty with their side sauce. Outstanding! I started out with New Zealand Mussels, two varieties were nicely plated with a delicious seafood sauce. The sauce was so good, I held on to it to put on other dishes. Next was Wild Mushroom Tom Kha. We love Thai food and have sampled many Tom Kha recipes, this is the best in the city! Our shared dish was Kao Pad Puu, a jumbo lump crab fried rice with egg, scallion, and carrot, delicious! It was served steaming hot and stayed that way as we cleaned the plate! The portion was easily shareable. The 98 will become our go to Thai restaurant!

Upon arrival, the bartender did not greet us and instead placed menus and water down without acknowledgment. When checking IDs, she abruptly snatched them from our hands, which felt disrespectful. Despite the bar not being busy, it took approximately 15-20 minutes for her to take our order. When my friend expressed that she did not like her drink, the bartender responded dismissively and did not offer any alternatives or assistance. I later shared that I did not enjoy my drink either, as it had an overly syrupy taste, but was told it could not be removed from the bill because I mentioned it "too late," even though I had not finished it. I asked to speak with a manager, but the situation escalated further. The manager initially defended the bartender rather than addressing the concern, then discussed my complaint with her in a way that led to the bartender confronting me directly. Instead of resolving the issue, the bartender argued with me and made an inappropriate assumption that I was accusing her of racism, which I never stated. The comment, "I'm not racist, that's the card you want to play," was particularly unprofessional and inappropriate. While the drink was eventually removed from my bill, the overall experience reflected a lack of professionalism, poor communication, and inadequate conflict resolution from both the bartender and management.
