I haven't been to Thai Spoon in years, so I decided to take a walk over and get some green curry on my way home. I remember really liking it years ago, so I was curious to see how I'd feel about it this time. The service was dramatically quicker than they said it would be. They told me 15 minutes but it was ready after 7 minutes for pick up and the ambiance and vibe of the service was very professional. The flavor was good, but it was definitely milder than I remembered. I asked for a 5 on their 1 to 10 spice scale, so I expected a little more flavor and heat. It wasn't bad at all. It just seemed a little bland compared with what I remembered. I also feel like there could have been a lot more vegetables. I remember the green curry having things like baby corn, mushrooms, peppers, zucchini, and more of a variety of vegetables. I feel like all of those different vegetables added so much flavor and texture to the dish. This time, there were only a couple pieces of zucchini and a lot of bamboo. I actually really like bamboo shoots. They're one of my favorites. But when there's that much of one vegetable, it starts to feel a little repetitive. Maybe they just happened to have an abundance of bamboo that day. I think I just preferred it when there was a lot more variety in the vegetables. The tofu was okay, although next time I might try chicken instead. One other thing I noticed was that the curry came in a black plastic container. I personally have some concerns about putting very hot food into black plastic because certain chemicals used in some black plastics can potentially migrate into food, especially with heat. I'd personally feel more comfortable with a different food container, or even the type of container they use for the rice, which I remember them using for the curry in the past. The takeout was around $18, which I don't think is unreasonable, especially considering the portion. Overall, I still thought it was good. I just remember the curry having more flavor and a much greater variety of vegetables the last time I had it. I almost wish I had gotten the crab fried rice instead. Next time I'm craving Thai food, I may try some of the other Thai restaurants in the area before coming back here to see how they compare. But I'm still glad I stopped by Thai Spoon after all these years. read more

For Thai food, I can't recommend this restaurant enough. Many vegan options-- tom kha and tom yum soups, for example. Even the fried rice can be prepared without egg. (Go for the spicy fried rice!) In fact, most of the entrees can be made vegan with tofu as the protein option. But there is plenty for the meat eater as well as pescatarians. I've been going here for years. June does a fantastic job. She works very hard and I have never had a problem with the quality of food as it is always consistent, and she's very accommodating with me to make it to my liking. My favorite dish is The Drunken Noodles. I get it with shrimp and I add chicken for $3.00 more to get the best of both, and the portion is just enough. I've also gotten the appetizer Chicken Sauté with peanut sauce for dipping. Delicious! To finish it off, I get their Thai Iced Tea. Sometimes two. Lastly, Thai Spoon is a great place to eat. Very nice Thai restaurant! I wasn't aware of this spot until recently, so I'm very glad I found this gem. They have many of the classic Thai dishes for a reasonable price. I tried out their pad see ew with tofu and the black sticky rice with custard. The pad see ew was very good. They definitely loaded up this dish with tons of vegetables, including fresh broccoli, cabbage, carrots, and more! The noodles were perfectly cooked and they used quite a lot of sauce, which I like. A decent amount of egg, although I would have preferred a bit more. The black sticky rice with custard was near perfect. They had the lovely coconut to pour on top, which added a perfect hint of sweet and savory to it. The custard was perfect, the rice was delicious, it just really hit the spot. I went here with some friends for dinner and we enjoyed our meal - the food was good (we enjoyed the green curry, seafood curry, and choo chee fish though I would skip the fried tofu appetizer next time as it wasn't very flavorful) and came out quickly, and the service was very warm and welcoming. I could see how it would be a go-to spot for somebody who lives in the area! The crispy spring rolls had a great crunch and paired well with the plum sauce. The sauce was thinner and a bit of a kick. The Zapp Noodle Soup with fried tofu and veggies is similar to pho with a simpler flavor, as there aren't as many spices. This is a Thai version of chicken noodle soup. The tofu held up well in the soup and was still firm. The veggies consisted of carrots, broccoli, and Chinese cabbage. I got spice level 3 and would bump that up one more if you want more of a kick. Thai Spoon offers a decently-sized dining room, but our waiter Alexander is who truly made the experience extra marvelous. It was a slow night, and we had the dining room to ourselves though many stopped to pick up to-go. Try the Golden Triangle appetizers! On a whim, my partner and I ordered them, and they are the most delicious surprise of turmeric! We also enjoyed our entire meal, and we highly recommend the Salmon Mango Curry as well as the Spicy Duck! This place is byob.m which is nice. I was craving pho but they didn't offer that so I got a beef noodle soup. It was bland, not much flavor for broth so I added some fish sauce and chili pepper to it and it was ok. I ordered pork toast but they didn't have any but still charged us. They did take it off. I asked for some hosin sauce and the waitress kept reminding me that it's not a Chinese or Vietnamese restaurant so they don't have some of the sauces I was asking for to make my noodles better. My friend ordered a tofu dish and she said she loved it but she ordered that every time she goes. After reading a couple reviews, I wanted to give Thai spoon a shot. I usually order from My Thai, but I thought we'd try something new for dinner. You know the saying if it's not broke, don't fix it? That's how I feel about my situation. Totally regretted ordering from Thai spoon. I can only speak for the delivery as I have never been to the actual restaurant, but man was it disappointing. The delivery also took longer than expected. I got a notification that my order had been picked up and on its way, but it took 25 minutes to get to my house when i live just a few blocks over. As for the food, thumbs down. I got the Tom yum and it was terrible. It tasted like hot sour water. I've had Tom yum many many other places so I can be certain it was not supposed to taste like that. I had to throw it away. My husband got one of the Curry's, which was supposed to have no peanuts, but did. He wasn't impressed with the flavor of it either. Conclusion... would I order from here again? Probably not. I will stick with My Thai, which is excellent! read more

There are times when a person finally needs to post a review after several bad experiences with a restaurants food. My wife and I have continued to support this business even when we have ordered food that was not consistent with previous experiences. The most recent experience was ordering Phad Thai that tasted like liquid smoke was added to it. I called the restaurant asking if they had any dish that had a Smokey flavor. When they confirmed there was no dish on the menu with that flavor profile I asked why a peanut sauce dish would taste like smoke. The person attempted to blame it on the spice level , and as a person who orders the maximum Thai spice level everywhere I order it was obvious this was not only a poor experience but the food was prepared incorrectly. I'm always in search of good Thai and sometimes it can be hard to find because most places are all the same, just sort of mediocre. But I'm not really sure why it took me this long to find this place! My mom suggested it and we went on a random Thursday. The place had two tables taken when we walked in but the later the night went, the more people came. I can't lie, though, I was a little put off by the inside appearance at first but do not judge a book by its cover (or in this case, it's inside??). Thai Spoon has all of the staples of a Thai restaurant- pad Thai, Thai basil, Tom yum/kha, drunken noodles, summer rolls, etc. I am also set on finding the best Tom Kha in the city and up until today I thought I had but nope, Thai Spoon hit it on the nose for me! It's my absolute favorite soup. So of course I ordered a cup and my mom ordered the summer rolls. Summer rolls were fresh and delicious. My soup was for sure the best I've had. Creamy and a bit sour, and lots of big mushrooms, chicken and cilantro. I'm NOT a mushroom lover - I'm a mushroom hater, but I will eat them in this soup because I love it that much, especially when they're in bigger cuts like this and not small and slimey. Also my soup was spice 2 because I don't like it too hot. Perfect spice level. For our entrees my mom ordered the Thai basil chicken at a 7 and I ordered spicy fried rice at a 5. I could've went higher but wasn't sure how spicy they did their food. My mom's 7 wasn't bad at all, we even used their spice rack. If you love spicy food, you could definitely do their 10. The flavors of both dishes were spot on. Although they both could've done with a little more Thai basil, they were steaming hot and delicious. We both ate ALL of our food and had none for leftovers because it was honestly that good. Lastly, the service was great. The people who work there are very kind and quick. They weren't that busy inside but we barely saw our server. It seemed we were constantly waiting for her to come back. The food itself was good. People have been telling me about this place, so I grabbed a bottle of wine and went to see for myself. It's located on Potomac avenue in Dormont which is doesn't have much parking although we found a spot pretty quickly on a side street. The atmos is casual with cozy seating by the window. We started with Thai spring rolls with homemade plum sauce. They were crispy as stated filled w/ veggies. My friend and I each ordered a noodle dish One was Pad Thai and the other was Drunken Noodles. Both were flavorful, but I liked the Pad Thai better. It was a little spicier than the other though you can choose how much spice you want. I enjoyed the meal and there was enough for leftovers. I'll have to go back to try the desserts. The price is right, with many more menu choices including soups, curries, and house specialties with duck and steak. They do take reservations. read more

Truthfully, I wasn't too impressed with the food but our waitress made the whole experience better. We came here on a Friday night and we were seated immediately. The place was a lot bigger than I had thought. Our waitress was super nice and friendly. For appetizer, we ordered the summer roll with shrimp. It was okay as I'm used to the Vietnamese version which tastes a bit better and has more meat/shrimp. For my entree, I got the drunken noodles with fried tofu. It was actually pretty good! The only thing is that I asked for spice level 4 (1 to 10 scale) and it was a bit too spicy for me. The main reason that we came here for dinner was for the mango sticky rice dessert!! I was so excited for this! To my disappointment, it was not good at all. The sticky rice was hard and a bit sweet but the savory sauce on top was just not good. We did enjoy the fresh mango. With no plans and a girlfriend recovering from surgery, I decided to treat my family to an Asian takeout banquet, so there was no better choice than to once again choose a nearby restaurant I haven't reviewed yet: Dormont's Thai Spoon. Thai Toast, Seafood Bangkok, Drunken Noodles with shrimp, Thai Spring Rolls, and Thai Summer Rolls filled our dining room table. Man, do Summer Rolls perplex me, the non-Siamese. When I first get a look at them, they resemble pouches of diaphanous plastic wrap full of greens, noodles, and protein, that is until I remember that the weird, gummy membrane is supposed to be rice paper. These quasi-invisible egg rolls were acceptable, but the peanut dipping sauce certainly saved them from the gastronomic doldrums. However, I imagine that they're a mighty salutary appetizer sans the sauce. Another eccentric starter, one I know for sure I've never had before, came in the shape of triangles. Thai Toast is what it's called, and toast it definitely what it resembles. The "combination of minced chicken and shrimp" didn't really come through much, and once again, the sauce, this time a sweet one of saccharine chili, enlivened these crispy pieces of pan-fried bread just like the peanut sauce did for the rolls. The entree and dessert I had, both sublime, made up for the simply adequate appetizers, vaulting Thai Spoon into "above average" domain. I didn't get to try the Drunken Noodles or the Spring Rolls, but Seafood Bangkok, my main course, was such a subaquatic, Lenten smash, I didn't feel much of a need to have anything else. Shrimp, mussels (!), calamari (!!), fish, and baby scallops jumped into a scalding slampit with bell peppers, basil, ginger, garlic, onion, carrots, celery, and egg only to be tossed around in a forcible, fairly fatty, flavescent gravy of Turmeric. Each oceanic morsel was supple and absorbed the South Asian spice to savorous effect. Dessert was yet another oddity in the Black Sticky Rice. Almost ominous and baleful to look at, the BSR merely came off as a benevolent hybrid of rice pudding and pumpkin pie. Being that this was a takeout dessert, it was not as ornately plated as it is for dine-in and required some assembly at home. The "thai custard" (the 'pumpkin-ish' component) came in globs placed in styrofoam with a milky coconut (?) sauce to be drizzled over it and the onyx rice, which was still warm and wrapped in foil. Once it was all put together, this strange dessert instantly made sense and was even assuaging in that its creaminess soothed my enflamed palate. So there you have it: an old, tired pizza joint whose name I couldn't remember for 10 grand has been transformed into a haven for what I feel is quality Thai...er Cuisine. Yes, that pun was semi-intentional as the folks behind Bloomfield's Thai Cuisine have courageously and successfully launched this second Thai restaurant in the unappreciated South Hills. A tiny place in Dormont with big flavors. If you're looking for affordable and tasty Thai food, stop by Thai Spoon. Mmm tofu pad Thai... I was excited when I saw this restaurant open up in my neighborhood. Now I'm sad that I'm so far away... UGH Thai Spoon why couldn't you move with me!?! The flavor, the HEAT - yes they ask from 1-10 how hot would you like it... To which I reply 8. BYOB with a small corkage fee is always a plus. No longer, along with Sugar that is celebrating it's 1st anniversary, TSpoon is a welcome addition. Yea! The staff was really cordial. Fun to talk to and able to answer our questions. Found out that this is the same family as Thai Cuisine which will open soon in Bloomfield, under renovations. Nice little place with black table cloths under glass. We shared the Salmon in Heaven and Green Curry with Shrimp. Both were good. The green curry was spiced just right with fresh veggies and the shrimp was cooked perfectly (nice and tender). The Salmon in Heaven was a little better, again cooked just right. The food was good, but maybe not quite as good as SBL or LBITS, Thai restaurants that are my favs. Will definitely return. Since we were on our way through Dormont, we figured we'd finally give Thai Spoon a chance. After all, the reviews were generally good. Unfortunately, our decent expectations were somewhat let down. We ordered edamame, crab rangoons, and summer rolls for appetizers. The edamame was...well...edamame. Not much to comment on there, and the crab rangoons were good. My wife and I were divided on the summer rolls, though. I felt that they had way too much lettuce, which took away from the basil flavor, and also made them huge for summer/fresh spring rolls. The wife liked them because of her love of lettuce. They also came with a peanut dipping sauce, which was good, but also seemed too heavy for the lightness of a summer roll. It was a juxtaposition that I'm not sure that I liked. Neither of our meals really did anything for us. She ordered the chicken pad thai - spicy level 3 - but definitely received a meal in the 5-7 range. She could barely eat it as she's not a spicy foods person, but tried to soldier through anyway. The flavors were decent, but no where near the best pad thai that we've had in Pittsburgh. The first thing i noticed was that but the noodles were undercooked, too...NOT a great first impression for a NOODLE dish. I tried the spicy basil with chicken. I ordered a spice level of 5, but we're thinking they mixed up our two spice levels, as my meal was as mild as you could ever want. The flavors were good, but the most noticeable thing missing, aside from the lack of heat, was the lack of basil flavor that I love in Thai basil dishes. I essentially had a normal chicken vegetable stir fry that I could've made at home. Tastes were decent, but far from what we were hoping for. The service was great, though, and I'm a sucker for little dive-y places, but I don't see myself traveling to Dormont to eat there again. I loved this place so much! I definitely think they're a top contender for plain-ole good Thai food in the city! The place is very cute inside. It is comfortable, clean, and casual-classy, but inviting. The staff is very nice and you can see their true willingness to make good product. We started our meal with crab rangoons, which were excellent! We then both got the pad thai and I thought it was fantastic.
