Nicky's is easily in the top 5 of best Thai I've had in my lifetime. Flavors and ingredients always slap, portions are plentiful, and as busy as tgey get, the service is fast. My friend and I dined there on July 4th. I got the Pad See Ew - noodles were soft yet springy, and the spicy / smoky / garlicky flavor of the dish is like nothing you get anywhere else. I am also not usually a dessert person, but this visit, I made an exception. The mango coconut ice cream with the sticky rice was a very special treat, particularly on this hot and muggy day. I don't even normally love mango, but yesterday I did. Just perfect, can't ask for more. Five stars. read more

I ordered this food for delivery from DoorDash. This is my first time trying this place for lunch, and I was incredibly disappointed. Though the flavors were mostly good, the food was poor in quality. I ordered Pad Thai and Pumkin Curry. The Pad Thai was mushy, the tofu was cooked weird, and there was no spice though I ordered it medium. The Pumpkin Curry was undercooked with hard pumpkin chunks so it was hard to eat. I chose this place as an alternative to my normal place, and I can say that I won't be ordering from here again. Please note, I would've given this one star if I had picked it up myself or eaten in restaurant. 3 of us ate at Nicky's tonight. Very good! We were greeted warmly and our server was very friendly and attentive. The food didn't disappoint. The spice levels matched what each of us wanted. I like it THAI HOT and all my food was good and spicy. Server brought me some fresh chopped Thai chilies and also the Thai chilies in fish sauce. So good! The crying tiger beef was delicious! Beautiful decor, incredible service, wonderful ingredients. Would give a 5th star but too much garlic and onion. Fortunately I was able to order pad Thai shrimp without garlic, but didn't realize it would be so loaded with onions. Otherwise this would have been one of the best pad Thai ever. Could not eat the chicken soup as it was loaded with heavy garlic that was already in the soup and could not be removed. I feel that often chefs get desensitized if they use a lot of salt, garlic, pesto, and onions - and that seems to be here with garlic and onions. I was starting to give up on the Pittsburgh food scene till this place was recommended to me. I went in for lunch and sat at a bar. The aesthetic is very pleasing and I only wish I got to sit outside but all the seats were taken. It took a while to get greeted and the service was for sure slow due to the rush but the food made up for it. I got the mango juice which had a unique flavor that I really liked. It blended well with the meal. The broccoli shrimp medium spicy was perfect. It went really well with the rice. The meal looked and tasted great. The food just was not exciting at all, very bland (and it was Thai!!) we even got great spices and seasonings and still felt it was underwhelming. They have adorable seating outside that makes you feel like you're very private, not on the street. -- when it's nice out! Otherwise, it's indoor seating. The service was decent, but a little slow when it's busy. We ordered the pad thai with chicken on a 3/5 spice level. We also ordered the red curry with chicken on a 3/5. Both dishes were good and gave generous portions. Two of us shared them and had leftovers. I would argue that there wasn't enough rice for the curry but I'm sure I could have asked for more. I like spice but not for it to overpower the flavors and I think 3 was nice but I'd be intrigued by a 4 next time. The sauce in the curry was flavorful, had loads of vegetables in it as well. The pad Thai had everything you'd expect. They do include a 20% "service charge" which is the tip so that's an interesting strategy. I wasn't upset about it tonight but if I had really bad service or something, I might have been upset about that. I also got the Thai iced tea to try and it was delicious. A milky iced sweet tea in reality. Tonight there wasn't a wait, which not sure if it was the weather or time of year. They did say they take reservations so it must be a phone call kind, not online. It has a ton of delicious sauce too, almost too much but loved the flavor. I used to love Nicky's Thai Kitchen! And so when I went back to try it, I was incredibly disappointed. I think this place (the whole franchise) is a terrible establishment. They really milk every cent from you: if you don't buy food, you have to pay $10; if you split a dish, there's an upcharge; you must spend a minimum of $10; and a 22% gratuity is automatically added, regardless of party size. That being said, the service was actually terrible. I had 3 different waiters because none of them wanted to work, and the food came out at least 30 minutes late. The food is average, with smaller portions, and it is incredibly expensive. There's definitely better thai in the city! The one thing that they have going for them is the ambiance. Got a table outside along the wall, but in the walkway so people were constantly passing very close to us as we dined. Service was good and they did not ignore us. I got a spicy noodle lunch special and a tomato yum soup. The spicy noodle portion is huge! It can definitely feed at least two and it comes with a starter soup or salad. I got the soup and it was a very homey soup, most likely a combo of different scraps from other dishes making for a flavorful broth. The spicy noodle itself is very flavorful and has an undertone of Thai basil. It was a nicely done drunken noodle variation. The tom yum soup was okay. It was most likely made with vinegar rather than tamarind or anything. It was also overfilled with veggies and chicken and barely had soup. I thought I was eating a salad at one point. The crying tiger beef or they have it as tiger cry beef it has a good sauce but the meat itself lacks of marination. The service was phenomenal! She serves a group of more than 9 people with a breeze. Our server also initiated a Sake Bomb shot and everyone was on board. It was so fun! My fav Thai restaurant in Pittsburgh in the heart of the Cultural District downtown. I always opt to dine outside in their oasis on the sidewalk. It is so very well done with umbrellas over every table and greenery surrounding you on all sides with hanging lights throughout, such that you are in your own world sheltered from the ongoing traffic. The service is always impeccable which is great because they do tack on automatically a 20 percent service fee, no matter your party size. This is not revealed aloud until they bring you the bill. But, since you will get service, food, and atmosphere well worth at least 20 percent, let it be. The menu options are lengthy. I have always been pleased with presentation, quality, and quantity and always have plenty to take home. Spice levels are 1 to 5. Level 2 I found too mild, three was perfect for my taste. I'm torn... the food was better than most Thai places - but the 20% MANDATORY tip (which they call a service fee) just sucks. The food - we had spring rolls, steamed dumplings, sen mee pad see eaw, and a pumpkin special that was good, but essentially just a green curry. The sen mee pad see eaw was STELLAR as were the steamed dumplings. The service was fine without being too overbearing, and the overall prices were ok. The decor and ambience were nice: a mishmosh of North Indian and Thai art. I like to tip about 15-20% - sometimes more, and rarely less if there's some weird issue that's unresolved. MANDATORY TIPS ARE FEES, NOT TIPS. I resent being told exactly how much I must tip and I avoid those restaurants. But since were were invited to dine here by another couple, we were saddled with a 20% surcharge. read more

I constantly brag (to anyone who will listen) that Pittsburgh's Thai food is top tier and Nicky's Thai Kitchen is one of my favorites. My go to is the Massaman Curry. Homemade creamy peanut sauce with potatoes and mixed veggies is everything you'll ever need. (Make it spicy) The atmosphere is also very homey, warm, and welcoming. Also nice talking to the staff (when it's not super busy) and that goes to show how popular it really is. Really great flavor when you come to Nicky's for Thai food. I always forget to snap pics because I am so excited to just dig in. I ordered the broccoli with shrimp and made sure it was spicy because why not and it delivered. So delicious and not too salty. I also inhaled the glass noodles with chicken and really wish I had a pic to show you. Huge portions - definitely big enough to share. The outdoor tables on the street are so cute and set up great for people watching and relaxing in the nice weather. They did such a great job making this the go to spot for Thai food in Pittsburgh. I have eaten at this location a lot. It's very convenient to my work downtown or if you're going to a show in the Cultural District. It has a good reputation as a reliably good Thai restaurant with a nicely decorated interior and a beautiful outdoor space on Penn Avenue if the weather is right. Today for the first time in an unseasonably cold spring, the weather was spot-on for outdoor dining, or just leaving the office for lunch, and perhaps Nicky's just didn't anticipate what a packed house they were going to get for lunch. We walked down with a group of six from work, with four choosing to sit indoors and two of us opting for outdoors, which was probably the only number of party there was space for outdoors when we arrived around 12:15 PM. We ordered one Thai coffee and one Thai iced tea. Our server had excellent recommendations when asked, as my colleague is from out of town and hadn't been here before. When I mentioned I was vegetarian, he also made a point of telling me that the dish I had chosen had a shrimp base that isn't mentioned on the menu. I could have found that out by scanning the QR code for the vegan-specific menu, but I really appreciated him calling it out as I know I have ordered and eaten that cashew dish before and never had it mentioned. Instead I went with the basil bowl with rice. We both got salads which came relatively quickly and were different and fresh with chopped nuts and pineapple. After that, however, it took very long to receive our entrées. We were served probably around 1:35, with a meeting to get back to by 2. We both ate and really enjoyed our entrées, but at that point felt a bit rushed and had to pack up half of our food to go so we wouldn't be late. I can't say the service wasn't good because I really appreciated the knowledge, recommendations and speed of everything else, such as taking our orders and bringing us boxes and settling our checks. We stopped by on a Sunday evening for dinner and it was very busy, perhaps due to the Sunday night football game. It seemed like most of the (alcoholic) beverages/cocktails came with an ice cube that is lit up and constantly changing in color, which was a fun touch. After seeing how large the portion sizes were for some of the noodle-based plates, our group considered sharing a few plates together. However, this restaurant enforces a $10 split plate charge, and so we all opted to order our own meal. I ordered the pad see ew with shrimp - I thought the sauce was too sweet and was lacking the savory notes, and the shrimp had little to no seasoning, as if they just tossed the shrimp in without taking any time to marinate it. Also, the spice level ranges from 1-5, and at 2, it's still very mild. Our service was friendly. I came here with a large group from work one evening. I was able to call ahead to make a reservation, and I highly recommend doing this. I was worried it was going to be so crowded since we noticed a line outside the door the night before! The staff were very welcoming and attentive and were accommodating to our needs. The restaurant is BYOB but also has a full bar that you can order from. We ordered spring rolls and egg rolls to share, which were tasty. We all ordered a dish each, which I will say is not necessary if you are sharing with a large group. The portions are very generous - it is family style portions for sure! I was able to try the pineapple fried rice, spicy Thai basil fried rice, beef pad see ew, and the kao soy. All of the dishes were absolutely delicious! The icing on top of the delicious meal was that the Thai spicy level (1-5) was actually spicy! I got the spicy level 5, and usually at other spots I am underwhelmed, but this place had me sweating!
