Since we were on our way through Dormont, we figured we'd finally give Thai Spoon a chance. After all, the reviews were generally good. Unfortunately, our decent expectations were somewhat let down. We ordered edamame, crab rangoons, and summer rolls for appetizers. The edamame was...well...edamame. Not much to comment on there, and the crab rangoons were good. My wife and I were divided on the summer rolls, though. I felt that they had way too much lettuce, which took away from the basil flavor, and also made them huge for summer/fresh spring rolls. The wife liked them because of her love of lettuce. They also came with a peanut dipping sauce, which was good, but also seemed too heavy for the lightness of a summer roll. It was a juxtaposition that I'm not sure that I liked. Neither of our meals really did anything for us. She ordered the chicken pad thai - spicy level 3 - but definitely received a meal in the 5-7 range. She could barely eat it as she's not a spicy foods person, but tried to soldier through anyway. The flavors were decent, but no where near the best pad thai that we've had in Pittsburgh. The first thing i noticed was that but the noodles were undercooked, too...NOT a great first impression for a NOODLE dish. I tried the spicy basil with chicken. I ordered a spice level of 5, but we're thinking they mixed up our two spice levels, as my meal was as mild as you could ever want. The flavors were good, but the most noticeable thing missing, aside from the lack of heat, was the lack of basil flavor that I love in Thai basil dishes. I essentially had a normal chicken vegetable stir fry that I could've made at home. Tastes were decent, but far from what we were hoping for. The service was great, though, and I'm a sucker for little dive-y places, but I don't see myself traveling to Dormont to eat there again. If I'm in the area, sure, but it's hardly worth going out of your way for. read more

I loved this place so much! I definitely think they're a top contender for plain-ole good Thai food in the city! The place is very cute inside. It is comfortable, clean, and casual-classy, but inviting. The staff is very nice and you can see their true willingness to make good product. We started our meal with crab rangoons, which were excellent! We then both got the pad thai and I thought it was fantastic. I love the location- the brick streets ! Parking might be a bit of toughie but I got some in less than 5 mins on a Sunday evening . There are a few Thai options in that area and we picked Thai spoon as it had the most number of reviews . The Place wasn't crowded at all but definitely a lot of take out orders . It's a typical small sized restaurant- nothing exceptional there.They have a decent menu - lots of options to choose from . Now the food : There has probably never been a bigger disappointment than the Tom Yum soup served at the Thai spoon :( I've had the Tom yum in Thailand and atleast a dozen other countries and also a lot here in NJ but never have I ever gotten a hot water bowl with chilies and mushroom and chicken - no taste other than the chili water and absolutely no consistency to the broth! Please please avoid at all cost - try only if you haven't had a Tom yum before . The drunken noodles were nicely done - they got this one right ! The Thai red curry chicken had way too much coconut - you could feel the coconut powder in the gravy. Yum!!! This place is so fresh and tasty and I'm never left feeling disappointed. I use to go here all the time when I lived in Dormont and every time I went I would get the fresh rolls and Tom yum soup because no place does it better than this one! Their curried dishes and drunken noodles are also amazing and it makes the best leftovers. I also enjoy the festive decor and fancy drinks! The biggest inhibiting factor for me in going here is the price - which for me is just too much. As such, I usually only go here for lunch or just get the appetizers which are much more affordable even though the portions are much smaller than the dinner portions. Nonetheless, the quality justifies the price if you can afford it and you can at least go on a fancy occasion! If you've never been here you absolutely owe it to yourself to try their fresh rolls and Tom yum soup at least once because those are the best! The most legit Thai Food in the Pittsburgh Area - this place trumps Nicky's Thai any day! We were looking for Thai places in Mount Lebanon while driving through, and decided to give this place a try. Best decision ever! We ordered the Tom Yam and chicken lettuce wraps for starters. Both better than other restaurants, but don't expect Thailand standards. For our mains, we had the Bangkok curry and the Bangkok seafood. Both were excellent! I especially liked the Bangkok seafood as the sauce had a nice egg and turmeric combination. The Bangkok curry was also really good! Meat and seafood in both were good quality. What blew me away was the dessert! We had the sticky rice with homemade coconut ice cream and peanuts - super delicious! Beautifully presented and the coconut ice cream was very creamy, and it complimented the warm, perfectly textured sticky rice. I've been craving good Asian desserts in Pittsburgh, and I finally found a place! Will definitely be back to try others. Service was excellent! I haven't found utterly phenomenal Thai food since moving to Pittsburgh. Nicky's isn't bad...but it's way too overrated. Plus, they use shrimp paste in all of their curries...so that's out. Found Thai spoon after watching a flick at the Hollywood and decided to try it out. Good. God. The service was excellent but honestly, I would take lousy service for great food any day. Come here. Firstly, I understand restaurant are struggling during covid, but what I had today was just terrible! First the satay, which is almost 12 dollars was barely a quarter of a chicken breast, tasted of old burnt oil and was tough. Secondly the green curry is white, and the taste wasn't vibrant, this restaurants competitors all product much better quality food in the area. In addition to all that, the Tom yum soup came half full, in a small container. This was the second miss from this restaurant. Not coming back again. I always get the green curry with chicken and the drunken noodles with chicken they're both super tasty and it's BYOB here (very minimal corkage fee). On the spice side you can order the heat 1-10-I've gotten 3 and it had good heat for a low request - so good! Staff is nice and they just expanded to make more seating. You don't have to get all dressed up to go here but you can if you want :-) read more

I went into Thai Spoon with pretty high expectations. I was referred here by a friend who said that the Pad Thai was pretty special. I don't disagree with him in regards to the quality of the Pad Thai, however, there were a few things I did not enjoy. My wife got the Pad Thai with tofu, as she is a vegetarian. I've had much better tofu at other restaurants, and it was on the bland side. My chicken pad Thai was very tasty, but it was a little sweeter than I expected. We started off with fried vegetable dumplings, which were just so-so. My biggest issue was with the service. Our server was nowhere to be found for the majority of our meal, and there were only three tables active in the restaurant. We also weren't acknowledged for at least 5 minutes upon being seated. Decided to stop by this place for take away since it was nearby and I was pleasantly surprised. Honestly coming from my Orlando/Kissimmee, Florida vacay to Pittsburg I gave up on asian food from the east coast. The Viet and Thai restaurants we went to were either tasteless, over-salted, or more on the Asian/America fusion type flavor(which isn't bad but just not the home cooking/heavy asian food I enjoy). We ordered the chicken pad kee mao (drunken noodle), chicken basil stir fry, and chicken tom kha soup. The chicken pad kee mao's flavor was on point! The noodle they used tasted freshly made which is oh so important in any asian noodle dish. It makes the dish 5x better. The veggies weren't overly cooked and still had a nice bite to them. I prefer having ground meat in my noodle stir-frys but they use sliced chicken. I was worried about the chicken being cut to thick like a lot of restaurants do but they slice the chicken real thin to where some pieces get broken up during the cooking process. Delish! I ordered level 7 spice and it tasted like nothing but the lady did give a side of dry pepper just in case. The chicken basil stir fry was good but could've been great. It has a good flavor foundation, what you would expect from thai chicken basil stir fry. If someone was newly introduce to Thai food and got this dish they would've loved it because it's not too much of a 'in your face' flavor. For me, I would've enjoyed a splash or two more of fish sauce and some more pepper. It would've been magical but still a great dish though. The chicken tom kha soup. It was cooked perfectly to what I know Thai food to taste like but I just wished there was a bit more of a sour taste. That's just preference though. The steamed rice was cooked well. Not too hard but not overly cooked and left jelly like. As for the service it was great in terms of going into the restaurant and ordering for to go. The lady at the register didn't have the most warming outward appearance and vibe but she was nice, did her job well and went above and beyond. She took my order, helped me in terms of spice levels at their restaurant(told me she would put pepper on the side and did it immediately before the food check even got to the back), and offered us water as we were waiting for the food and informed us that it was filtered since their has been 'led in water' breakout news. The food was quick to come out.. maybe 20ish minutes from placing the order. They don't use styrofoam containers instead they pack the food in nice, thick plastic containers that could be washed and used to pack lunch. Thai Spoon is fantastic. My go-to order is the Pad See-ew with chicken. While it's BYOB, the Thai iced tea can't be missed! It's not the largest interior, but the food is definitely the focus. The food is really good and the owners seem to try really hard to do a good job, but it appears that they have trouble employing good help. Most are inexperienced and unorganized. Dining in is a more pleasant experience but anytime I order takeout there seems to be an unorganized scramble to get things right. Also the kitchen staff is audibly vulgar from the waiting area. And some of the wait staff can be a little harsh. I want this place to do well, but they need a more professional staff to do well in my opinion. read more

After moving from Bloomfield, and leaving behind my beloved Thai Cuisine, I finally found a place to get my fix. I went here with my bf and I have to say that it was pretty good. The restaurant was busy, but we were seated right away. It was a little hot due to lack of central air, but they had fans going, so that helped. There was only one server, but I was impressed on how he handled a busy restaurant. My water glass was never empty. Whenever I try a new place I always order Pad Thai....if they have a good Pad Thai, then they're worth my next visit. LOL. It was good. I got a level 8 spicey and enjoyed it. Thai Spoon is probably the best Thai restaurant in the South Hills and it was probably one of the first Thai joints to pop up in south of the city. Despite its expansion, it is still an intimate little space. I've tried a lot of items from their menu and everything has tasted great and fresh. I find that their noodle dishes are some of the best in the city, specifically their Drunken Noodles and Pad Thai. Their flavors are well-balanced: not too sweet, not too salty and not too tangy. They also include a lot of veggies in their Drunken Noodles that other places might leave out. I've also tried their soups (specifically Tom Yum and Tom Kha) and although they taste good, they seem a little one-dimensional compared to other Thai restaurants I've tried. All in all, the food is tasty and it's a great place for Thai if you're in the south hills area. read more

YUM! We went here when we needed our Thai fix and were directed here as this was one of the better Thai places in Pitt. It was pretty delicious! Let me give you a tip: they are not afraid of spice. If you usually order hot and you ACTUALLY want it hot not, meh. hot but HOT then order it hot. However, if you want it less spicy I would go medium. We split a pad see ew (sp?) because we were having a big dinner later and it was delicious! The snap peas were fresh, the noodles weren't soggy, and the beef was yum. A nondescript store front in Dormont isn't particularly inviting but the search for more Thai restaurants continued with a trip to Thai Spoon. Inside, the restaurant doesn't provide much atmosphere but not many places can match either Nicky's location for a full Thai experience. But my tastebuds convinced me long ago that I'm not there for the atmosphere. I'm there for the spicy tastiness that is awesome Thai food! The place is small for sure but it's cozy enough that you need not worry about sitting in your neighbor's lap. The menu is pretty extensive and even had some novel dishes I hadn't seen before. We started with some appetizers and the corn fritters were delightful. Unfortunately our other choices were greasy and not especially appealing in appearance or taste. Stick with the spring rolls. No frying involved! The four of us shared each of our dishes so we had a chance to get a more representative sampling. My spicy calamari dish, ordered at a 9 spice level, was bland and a disappointment. The calamari was rubbery and didn't have enough other things on the plate to compensate. The lack of heat is always a bummer for me. My daughter's drunken noodles, at a 4 spice level, were far hotter than mine. While hers was ok, it wasn't great. Passable would be the most generous description I could give. One of the other dishes was a curry dish but the flavor was weak and the sauce was watery. I'm looking for more depth of flavor and with Thai spices you have the right to expect that! My wife's seafood dish was the best of the bunch and I'd order that next time. It was flavorful and I was glad she shared! The food was inconsistent and while I wouldn't drive all the way over to the South HIlls to eat here again, if I lived close, I'd give it a few more tries. This place...oh my. I have eaten there more than a dozen times and have never had a bad experience. The service is excellent and extremely friendly. The food is amazing and the prices are low. A few highlights from Thai Spoon would be their pad Thai, corn fritters and spring rolls. I mostly get the spicy egg noodles with beef or the green curry. Both are amazing. What I really could spend all day talking about is the tom kha soup. I get tom kha at every thai restaurant I go to. While I have had a tasty bowl elsewhere, Thai Spoon has created a perfectly harmonious balance between the spicy chili paste and the creamy coconut milk. Now, I am not an expert on Thai food at all. But, I like to support my neighborhood and wanted to try it out when I saw it was open. Went in and the boyfriend ordered Pah Thai and I had some Tom Kah soup. The soup had a nice flavor to it. The Pad Thai was very good. It tasted great and they gave you a portion big enough to make two meals out of. I think the pad thai with chicken ran about $11 so my boyfriend stated he could get the same amount for $5 in the Strip. But they are really trying here to make it a nice dine in restaurant. What used to be a closed down pizza shop for as long as I've lived here, now looks like a small restaurant with nice glasses and friendly servers. They have a takeout menu as well (they were out of copies when we went in) So I think I could make this a place to pick up something different for a change. Go out and support a new business and maybe someone with a better palate for Thai can describe if the food is really up to par. read more

Thai Spoon, what can I say? Definitely not as good as Nicky's in the North Side. The crab rangoons were not good, no crab at all and a super sweet cream cheese in an over fried wrapper. I ordered green curry, I like a little spice, I ordered a 6, but could barely Taste the heat. The broth was watery and the vegetables were absent. I did get a lot of bamboo shoots. On a recent visit to Pittsburgh, I was reminded that in general, the Thai food in the burgh is pretty freaking good! Much better than what I've come across here in Denver. I dined at Thai Spoon with a friend last week - it's her neighborhood Thai place. This was Thai dinner #2 for the week - so instead of my normal curry, I opted for the drunken noodles. I'm not lying when I say I ate EVERY LAST BITE. They were so delicious. Her green curry looked amazing as well. Have got take out from here twice now. The first time I would give it 3 stars, this time it was better. I have gotten drunken noodles both times and it is pretty tasty. Not the best Thai in pgh I have ever had, but still good. I get spice level 4, which makes you sweat a little, but not be unbearable. My favorite Thai is Nicky's and Smiling Banana Leaf....but I'm in the South Hills and sometimes I don't want to drive there for a quick dinner. Enter Thai Spoon. I've heard about it for quite some time but until recently haven't tried it. Finally, I did and I'm glad. All of the items my family chose were extremely flavorful. The Bangcock curry was excellent albeit a bit sweeter than other curries I've tried. Still an excellent choice. Also had the Pad See Ew. I think it was on par with the other places I mentioned above which is a good sign as this is my favorite Thai Dish. I ordered it 5, but probably should have gone with a 6 just to kick up the heat to make it perfect. All in all, I really liked Thai Spoon and will make this my go-to Thai place, mainly out of convenience. I work near by and my coworkers and I share the same good taste in foods so we used to order from here a lot. I had everything in their lunch menu and everything is delicious, I can't tell you how happy it makes me that they have, not only tofu, but faux meat! We used to order a lot but one time I went to pick up our food they haven't even made it and ended up waiting so long that I was 1/2 hour late past my lunch break. My husband and I eat here when we're in the area and we both really like it. They ask how much heat you like (I'm a 5) and they really get it right. So, we may not be able to order out from here because of that one problematic instance but I will still eat here every chance I get. read more

I really wanted to love the food from here, but have to say that while it's good, it's definitely not great nor would I order from there again. The steamed edamame with sea salt was great ( hard to screw up something that simple), but they forgot to deliver the side of soy sauce I had requested. The tofu pad Thai was good--was surprised to find huge pieces of what appeared to be Napa cabbage included. The large but thinly sliced carrots as well as broccoli pieces were tasty as was the dish. Again, it was good but ordinary. The tofu vegetable Tom kah was ok. I only had a few spoons of it and when I opened the fridge this morning it appeared that there was so much cream of coconut in the soup that it had solidified back to cream. The steamed chicken dumplings were good. Overall, I'm glad I tried this place but would not try a second time. We absolutely love this place. Living in Dormont, we are so fortunate to have a jem like this in walking distance. I have two staple items that are my go to entrees, the green curry with chicken, and the drunken noodles. Both of these dishes are just fantastic. Be careful when being asked about how spicy you like your dishes. I am a fan of spicy food, but the 4 is plenty spicy for me. The restaurant itself is tiny, so I would suggest making a reservation. It is also BYOB. So take along your swill. I've seen everything from six packs of beer on a table, to the standard bottles of wine. What is great about the BYOB here, is they charge one dollar per person as a corkage fee. That is pretty awesome! Service is friendly and accommodating. As an appetizer try the spring rolls and pot stickers. Also give the Thai iced tea a try. Give this place a try, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. read more

This is a great Thai Restaurant. The food was delicious and the price was shocking. We brought our own bottle of wine and got the Cab Rangoons, Tom yum soup, pad Kew mow with chicken dinner and curry soup with veggie dinner, finished it off with the fried banana and ice cream desert.
