Food: I'd give the food 3-3.5 stars, the tacos are good though the portion is a bit small for the price, the burritos are a much more economic option. I had ordered a B.A.D. breakfast burrito to go, and had it for breakfast the next morning, it was really really salty, so I'd suggest having a steady source of water nearby. Taps: They are in an area where they would not survive long if they didn't serve the incredible local libations, they do not disappoint in this regard. Service: Every time i've gone, we have sat at the bar, and the bartender has always been friendly and attentive. I also believe the owner has been present every time i've been there and has also been very friendly and attentive. This place is a game changer for the upper valley. This is the closest to true California style Mexican food this place may ever see. With that said, it's OK. It wouldn't make it in California but this place is going to be a favorite for many people who have never had anything like it before. First, decor/set up: If Solana Beach, CA had a baby with VT. Played a lot of mid 90s to mid 00s alternative rock, videos of snowboarders and surfing, hand made Pinterest do it yourself furniture, fun colors, lounge area in the back. Very chill. Second, service: Attentive but OK. Many of the servers were missing something in their personalities and presence. The host (your first impression) was weird, laughed at the hour wait. Seemed very nervous and uncomfortable. The waitress was blunt to the point of almost being rude. To give her credit, she was very attentive, she wasn't mean, and she definitely checked on some things for me. There was one guy who carried all the personality and excitement (I wonder if he was the owner) Lastly (and most importantly), food/drinks: I ordered a gin cocktail that had agua Fresca. It tasted like pineapple orange juice, had some chili powder in it, couldn't taste gin at all (as in the gin - pinecone flavor, it definitely packed an alcoholic punch). Would of been more appropriate for vodka. A good gin cocktail really sings with the aromatics. I also ordered the blackened fish tacos. The used perch, which is milder than salmon, but the blackened seasoning lacked flavor and was burnt. They took blackened to the next level. They also didn't warm up the tortillas before they served them so the tacos fell apart before we could bite into them. What surprised me was that their queso fundido, which is traditionally served with melted cheese like Monterey Jack or Queso Quesodilla from Cacique with chorizo crumbled on top, you melt it on the stove top in a cast iron skillet or on the oven and serve it, the texture should be like melted mozzarella. They serve their with nacho cheese that has gluten and additives. Ew. read more

Superb, everything was absolutely above and beyond fantastic. I had the Nachos with the house made Chorizo, the blackened taco, and the not so standard burrito. Oh yeah, I also ordered the Smokey, spicy, sweet chips and salsa and the guacamole. Everything was truly amazing! They also serve 5oz. glasses of beer so I was able to try every IPA they had amongst a several others. Worst dining experience ever. Seriously. Ever. I've never written a review in my life but feel the need. Was told it'd be a 15 minute wait, 70 minutes later we got a table. Then suddenly the place was half empty. 40 minutes later we still didn't have food, not even chips and salsa. A condescending waiter tried to explain how restaurants work and then suddenly our food arrived, so obviously forgotten again. I didn't get what I ordered and my wife's pork taco was cold (is sitting there) and a strange gray color. Asked the manger over and he was the most arrogant millennial I've ever encountered. At one point he said he made my taco (chef too?) and said he spit in it. (Which I could believe because the bite I had was terrible) also said it's OK the food is bad because the 21+ crowd drinks like crazy. Run by kids, liked by kids. Traveling from a day trip to NH back to Woodstock, VT, we decided to stop in for a bite to eat. I ordered the blackened fish tacos and the shrimp tacos. The tacos offered a generous serving of shrimp and mahi mahi. My vegetarian ordered the 'to-go' burrito with a side of street corn. The burrito was loaded up with black beans and potatoes took the place of rice, which is a nice touch. My tacos looked very good and so did the burritos, which almost looked like a pressed panini burrito. But we realized there was something very important missing. Flavor. I almost forgot my shrimp was supposed to be rubbed with ancho chile, because I didn't taste any. And I almost forgot that my fish had been 'blackened,' because the flavor was so subtle. The burrito needed lots of cholula sauce and the extra sauce from the street corn was repurposed as a burrito dip to give some it some extra kick. The menu is really creative and there is so much potential here. The food just needs an extra little kick in the pants to give it some more oompf. read more

10/30/21 Traveling through White River Junction on my way to New Hampshire from Norwich University. Great looking, trendy restaurant in downtown WRJ that was pretty busy understandably for a Saturday night. Placed a to-go order inside. Staff was friendly and pleasant taking my order, but when I came in to pick up the food. Staff did a 180 degree turn on pleasantries. They ran out of spicy predicaments side orders but because I didn't want any other option for 2 of my 3 meals they were insulted because I requested a refund for the sides. The "manager" who processed my refund was flat out rude with "no worries man, relax" tude'. At the end of the day, I am the customer who dropped over $80 for 3 meals and even gave a $10 tip for takeout prior to the incident. I don't need the attitude or you forcing me to take another side option I didn't want. Just give me the food and refund for the sides and call it a day. Lastly if it's a to-go order give me utensils so I can eat the food. The food wasn't bad, but it was far from superior and pricey for what it was. Hartford High School Class of 1974, in Hartford, Vermont, has been meeting at Trail Break taps & tacos once a month for the past several months. We love the food. We love the beverages, especially the fine selection of beer they have. We love the owner and his staff. They go above and beyond to accommodate our group regardless of how many show up. We have reserved the backroom every time we have been there. The atmosphere projects a feeling of being at home relaxing in your living room with family/friends. Very disappointed.... Overall, the meal had the feel of any one of the following: 1) the college frosh that cooks for his gf for the first time, 2) the Super Bowl special meal they'd serve in prison, or 3) Summercamp "Mexican night" for 12 year olds. I could tell a longer tail of the massive quantities of bland, flavorless food that includes cheese streak meat and some kind of gravy wrapped in a tortilla and labeled a "beef taco", the lack of rice??? (yes, they don't evidently serve "rice" as is "rice and beans", the Tater Tot loaded (yes, they put Tater Tots in burritos!) and the mountain of oily orange and yellow shredded "cheese" they heap upon a 12 oz bag of chips and call nachos, the "salsa" which was the worst I've had in my entire life, but I lived in SoCal and practically lived on Mexican food so what do I know?, but life is short ya know so I won't get into details. The waitress was nice and of course that's always appreciated. The music was too loud though and that just added to bad experience. Was honestly skeptical of coming to this place based on the reviews, including some of the managements passive-aggressive responses to less than perfect reviews. The place is lovely and very hip. Different for this area. The menu was uncommon and unique, but in a good way. My meal was a tad spicy for my taste, so I ended up having to switch meals with my boyfriend. The service was slow and practically non-existent, probably because they were so busy. Would not recommend coming here if you had a time crunch. But if you get an order of the churro donuts it will make it worth the long wait; they were excellent! read more

This place is awesome! Just five minutes off the highway (I-89 S), we stopped here on a long road trip. We were looking for anything other than fast food - and we found something so much better! Great atmosphere, attentive service, and AMAZING food. Everything was really fresh and creative (and the seared tacos are not to be missed). Oh my gosh, this place was so fun and good! The ambiance was bright and colorful. We ate on the patio which was lit up with hanging lights and decorated with ski lift chairs for customers to enjoy while they dine. The tacos were fun! Yes, fun! They had a lot of options and had so many interesting combinations that made the ones we had super yummy! And I loved that I could get guacamole and chips for a side. I love guacamole! And this place wins for the best kids menu ever! I was impressed that they didn't offer the same, easy, boring dishes. Funky place, part urban-modern, part sort of crunchy mountain bike/ski vibe, with lots of twinkly lights. Overall, a pleasing atmosphere for a meal. Pretty good beer selection, and some interesting cocktails (didn't try one yet, but I will next time). Pretty reasonable prices for this part of the world. Not cheap by any means, but not overpriced. The waitstaff was attentive and polite, and I like that you can pay with an iPad right at the table. Handy and saves paper (if you choose). The carnitas taco was excellent. One of the best I've ever had. The steak taco was a bit bland and chewy, however. I didn't get to try the fried fish as they were out, but I'll be back to try that one. Food is good, service is terrible. As a server, I understand that restaurants can be busy and things take a while. However, we waited over 90 minutes for our food and the entire time the server did not stop by our table once to see if we needed anything or apologized. We had empty glasses for 40 minutes. I finally complained to another server because ours was nowhere to be found and still no one apologized and nothing got taken off the bill. We've given Trail Break several chances but sadly it continues to let us down. The food is decent (we love the nachos) but the service is terrible. We have waited upwards of 90 minutes for our food and never receive much apology or explanation. We get that they can be busy, but they are clearly understaffed and it has made for a few very unpleasant dining experiences. Sadly we will not be returning in the future and do not recommend it. Worst experience we have ever had at a restaurant. It was terrible! Food= presentation terrible, tacos served an a dark dirty looking half cookie sheet pan. Duck wings ok, presentation sloppy. Sweet potato and chickpea mash, very small portion and not tasty, but spicy. Chicken taco looked and tasted like pulled pork, no taco toppings (lettuce, tomato, cheese, etc). Cinnamon milk- way too much cinnamon. Roasted corn looked like it had been barfed up. Hid any chance of taste with hot, even though asked for not hot. Menu extremely difficult to understand. Waitress got order wrong. Atmosphere too bright, music too loud and bad selection. Only thing good was beer. Waiter asked how we liked it at end of meal. Told him "not and all too hot". The place is crowded, which is great. Loved the ambiance. We started out with the queso, which was pretty tasty! I ordered the carne asada and chicken tacos. (Received fish tacos by mistake which were quickly replaced.) They were good, but a little disappointed that it was ground meat in both. Went when they first opened and have now been back a few times more recently, and they have really got their s*#t together now. Every taco I have tried has been really good; I haven't ventured out beyond tacos because the 2 tacos + 1 side deal is too tempting every time! The waterlemon gnargarita is awesome and I love that they offer a smaller beer pour to allow for trying a few different ones.
