This restaurant was so good that we came back a second time a year later while on vacation. The popcorn they serve at the beginning is delicious and a great way to start a meal. Decided to try this place out last night and WOW!!! food was incredible, the warm welcoming decor reminded me of a west coast ski shop, with plenty of incredible beer options, both local and afar. I brought a couple of friends with me who don't really go out to eat mostly because they are commonly disappointed with the food received, and they were blown away. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because the menu was too hard to read ....small font and the lighting made it difficult, neither reason will keep me from going back . I'm still thinking about those nachos a month later! I was in White River for 2 weeks and went to Trail Break twice! I had a taco the first time and a burrito and nachos the second time. The menu is a little confusing at first. They use terms like 'vertical eats' to mean a burrito. But the waitstaff did a great job of explaining the menu, answering questions, and giving recommendations. It's a small place and seemed to be quite full both times I went. The atmosphere is bright and inviting. They played documentaries about surfing and snowboarding on the TVs. The food is full of great flavors. They had lots of great options. The crispy potatoes that are featured in some of the burritos were so good!! Personally, I would prefer they put out plain popcorn. They coat it in jerk seasoning which for me is an odd touch. It can be a bit of a wait for food as they're often busy so I was looking sadly at the bowl, but hey you can't be mad at free popcorn. I was a little skeptical of a taco place in Vermont but overall it was a nice experience and if I'm ever back in WRJ I'll be there. read more

This restaurant is near perfect. It has character, good food, and incredible service. A cleverly worded menu has both the go to classics such as nachos and chicken tacos but it also gives the option to be a bit more adventurous with something like an ahi tuna taco or a fried avocado. Along with the food being delicious our server Remy I believe his name was brought us everything he thought we may need; a couple extra chips to scrape up all that fell off of our nachos, filled up our water, and replenished our jalapeño popcorn supply. Overall could not have asked for much better. The only issue i have with this place is that it's no where near my home town. read more

Holy crap! Such a great place to eat and drink. Had the Raspy Rascal to drink and to eat, the street corn, and two tacos; the low maintenance and the daily special which I subbed the meat out for jackfruit (at our servers awesome suggestion). My husband & I love good food! We finally got to Trail Break (129 S. Main St, WRJ) today for lunch. It was so very good! The service was kind & attentive. Recommendations by the staff were spot on. It's been on our list to try & we were delighted that lunch is now served Th-Sat, 11-3. The best is that 15% of our tab today went to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center when we mentioned the Team Tennis to Smash Cancer. Gotta love & appreciate a business that is involved in our community. Underwhelming! Disappointed, but not surprised. Look. My girlfriend and I came here expecting the tacos would be mediocre at best, and hoping the beer would be good to compensate. After choking on an appetizer not of chips and salsa but of popcorn smothered in an excess of Jamaican jerk seasoning, we tried to order beers. The manager accepted my New Hampshire ID with no problem, but when my girlfriend showed him her federally issued tribal ID, which she uses to travel internationally and board airplanes, he said they could not accept it because their liquor license was new and her ID "wasn't in the book" of ID's they could accept. We tried to give him a history lesson on treaty rights and tribal sovereignty, explaining that tribal ID's are unlikely to be listed in "the book" because the erasure of Native peoples is normalized in American society. The manager was not receptive to this line of reasoning, nor to the line on the ID itself that says the holder is "entitled to all member privileges as accorded by Tribal and Federal law." The manager cited the fact that they had turned away foreign IDs, to which we responded that Native tribes are literally more domestic than America. We also showed other forms of ID corroborating her name and birthday. Honestly, with the apparent policy of only accepting IDs they recognize from the US, Trail Break staff are more likely to accept fake ID's imitating US state IDs than to serve many of-age people who don't have "American" IDs. (Also, if her ID were fake, why would she fake a tribal ID?) @Trail Break: Please educate yourselves. European Americans are not Indigenous to this continent, and shouldn't be able to deny service to of-age adults on the ground that their FEDERAL IDs are not "in the book." This is not about "the book." It's about you not knowing what a federally recognized Native American tribe is. We're locals and have been many times in hopes that each disappointment was a one off. No luck. Last night was the final attempt. Told it was a 40 minute wait and out our name in. There were 2 tables of 6 that were empty but not cleared. As we sat and sat and sat they table remained unseated and uncleared and both owner and staff walked by them repeatedly. When we were finally seated at one of those tables it had been almost an hour. What a waste of time. One person reported to our server that their meal was "terrible actually" at their first check in and no action was taken other than "thanks for letting us know so we can tell the chef". No offer of something different or any accommodation on the bill. The food was uneaten. Another visit we left a credit card to play one of the games and the children who were supervised and well behaved were scolded for playing. We're just done with this place which is really disappointing because we wanted so much to like it and support local business but they've given nothing to or us to work with. read more

Love this place! Nights at Trail Break with charred arctic char, sushi-caliber tuna and Baja-style tacos is all I really need in my life. On top of that, the rotation of beer gives me the chance to down local IPAs as well as seasonal offerings from craft brewers across the country (current favorite: Winter is Here from Ommegang). Trail Break has the variety of food and drink that I want in a local taco place, and it has the ambiance to keep my coming back week after week. Keep up the good work, folks! read more

This was our first time at the restaurant. I ordered the 3 tacos + a side. Husband ordered a burrito + chips & salsa. Overall opinion is that the meat is seasoned decently but the other components were blah. My "street corn" was not authentic street corn as I've had from Boricua street vendors in the Chi. This "street corn" was grilled maybe with zero seasoning and some bland orange sauce on top. I ordered the chicken, steak and pork tacos. Decently seasoned meat but the other stuff on it could use some salt. I must say the tortilla started to break underneath the weight of the food once folded to bite. A broken tortilla is a sin with tacos. The best part of my meal was the drink; a jalapeño plus mango and lime juice cocktail. The salsa that comes with the chips is blah. Our store-bought jar of salsa from Mexico was waaaay better. Nothing was spicy. Nothing! I assumed taco or some Latin dish would have some level of kick to it. After delivering our food, our waitress immediately asked if we wanted hot sauce. That should be an insult to the chef because if we need condiments to help add flavor then some steps in the kitchen was missing. I saw several other tables request hot sauce too. I'd recommend adding spice and bold flavors then leaving the option available for customers to dial it down, if they decide to. Just another bland Vermont restaurant but we appreciate the effort. read more

Caution: Refuses service to minorities. I have never encountered such blatant prejudice and racism at a restaurant. I would like to think Vermont is a fairly progressive place. I went to the bar to order food with my friend. Immediately, the female bartender told us that we could not sit at the bar. She ignored us and served other people before us. I was confused but figured she was busy so I patiently waited and finally tried to order. She said I should sit somewhere else and she could send the food over to me. I was completely baffled. She looked into my eyes then said firmly "I KNOW WHAT YOU LIKE." She then took my order begrudgingly and then ended up sending my food to another table. My friend had to go retrieve my tacos from the other table for me. I finally realized what was happening. She was refusing to serve me because I was not the usual customer...I am an Asian American and my friend is Latina. What is disgusting is that THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME ITS HAPPENED. My friend who is Hispanic told me the same server had refused to take his order not ONCE but TWICE before. DO NOT EAT HERE IF YOU HAVE A CONSCIENCE. read more

What a great experience. Welcomed right away and seated. Our waiter was too young to answer beer questions, but willingly brought samples. Great Silo cider for the non beer folks. We enjoyed the lightly spiced dirty pop corn for starters. We had fish tacos and with side of street corn, roasted and spiced to perfection. No room left for dessert - maybe next time. Trail Break was a stop along our way to Burlington. The food is great, the beer selection is also awesome! Definitely worth a stop if you are in the area. We rented out the back lounge for a party on a Saturday night and had a great time! Topher was super helpful, accommodating, and attentive throughout the evening. Amy our server was awesome as well and kept the drinks coming. We had per-selected apps to be shared by all. Topher recommended to have the severs go around to the guest with food, which helped people partake in the apps but keep catching up with friends. Great spot to visit if you're in the area! The tacos were INSANELY good, the beer selection was great, and the decor was quirky and fun. Seriously though, those tacos....mmmm. I also have to mention the service which was outstanding. We sat at the bar and the bartender was friendly, attentive, and quick.
