Cuban sandwich with side of tots

We gave Three Penny Taproom a try for a weeknight dinner. It was a great choice! The restaurant has an industrial feel to it with wood benches and chalk board beer lists. The taproom was a bit loud due to there being a live band plus music over the speaker system in addition to customer conversations. Even with all that my group was able to hold our own discussion. The menu had many interesting options. My husband selected their Cuban sandwich plus a hard cider. I chose their schnitzel sandwich which seemed unique to what I've seen around. The food was good with fair prices. I recommend Three Penny Taproom if you're near by.

The beer is excellent, the wings are perfect. The double smashburger super impressive for this neck of the woods. Get the corn jalapeño chowder. No notes. This place hit the spot and was perfect while driving thru. My wife said she wanted a tavern with a burger and beer for lunch and this place is everything and more

Loved the grilled hot dogs, buns and waffle fries.

When visiting Montpelier last week, we ended up having lunch at 3 Penny Tap Room. We were lucky they had hot dogs as the special that day. It really got us in the 4th of July spirit. They were really good because they were grilled and on New England style buns. The waffle fries were really good. There also was a great beer selection. Unfortunately, my husband's experience wasn't as good. His burger and fries were cold and had obviously sat too long before being served.

Nice beer on tap....Great selection of maybe 18. Very well done Cosmo.

Great service. They make lovely Cosmo. Bartenders helpful with best local food suggestions....specifically Creemees. Enjoyed a very good burger and excellent tots.

i loved the fact that they had a tofu sandwich. very rarely do i get to enjoy a tofu product that is both flavorful and well-executed. the stout that i drank was a great complement to the meal, and our side of shoestring fries was the cherry on top of a wonderful meal... which is weird. because shoestring fries are made up of potatoes not cherries. whatever!

We came here at 7:30 on a Monday evening. This restaurant has two doors-one for the bar and one for the dining area. Our server was nice. She helped me pick from two different cocktails (red pollard) We ordered the fries and chicken nuggs with sweet chili sauce and a burger with tots. The burger was perfectly cooked medium and the tots were nicely seasoned and crisp. The nuggs were great and the sweet chili sauce was delicious. Fries were freshly cooked and crisp. Our server checked on us several times. We would definitely come here again when we are in the area.

Interesting and diverse menu. Incredibly slow service, but the food was pretty good and the tots/fries were excellent! Nice outdoor seating on the street.

Still like to come here. Food is ok. Ambience is great. Don't come as often as I used to. Even mix of regulars and tourists. The pricing has taken off. Penny Ripper (hot dog) was 8$ only a couple of months ago as a special and is now 11$? Not worth it. Get a beer or a cocktail (quality is highly variable depending on who is behind the bar) and eat elsewhere. Btw most of the reviews are from tourists. FWIW

    Ahi tacos

Our last meal in Vermont. We came here for lunch to stop by the capital and exploring Vermont. They have a patio and it's nice sitting out there to enjoy the nice weather. We ordered some beers and cider. I got the ahi tacos, my husband got the cod cake burger, and my friend got the steak sandwich. The ahi tacos wasn't bad. The cook wasn't too bad and it could be more rare but the tacos had some good flavor and sauce. My friend didn't like her Thai steak salad. She said the steak was flavorless and the dressing wasn't strong or had good flavor. My husband loved his cod cake burger. I took several bites and it was delicious! The cod is so meaty, like a crab cake but you get more fish. It was good. That's what you should get.

Half grilled cheese & soup w/ shorty fries = A+ Cod Cake Sandwich = A+ The selection of beers is incredible, all local on tap. They tend to have a wait on Friday nights / weekends but didn't take too long to get a table. Would recommend when in Montpelier

Despite the packed house, servers were friendly and reasonably attentive, and while the food came out slow, that's to be expected. I wouldn't say it was unreasonable at all considering the volume, AND they were churning out a ton of to-go orders. No televisions in here, which I loved, and a great vibe. Tons of people just having a great time. Great non-alcoholic drink menu. About to celebrate three years of sobriety, and I truly appreciate that. The food was good-great, depending. My wife got a salad with pulled pork and I got the brisket. Both were just "fine" and the meats desperately needed sauce. The brisket was pretty dry, which was disappointing. We also split a side of the smoked mushrooms, which we thought were good, and the pasta salad, which was unfortunately quite bland and not very noteworthy at all despite using pasta from the acclaimed Gallus. Now here's the sleeper: the dry rub wings were incredible. Some of the best I've ever had! Don't miss out on these just because they're on the appetizer menú. If I came back I'd just get a double order of these bad boys. Sweet and smoky and cooked to perfection. Absolute 10/10.

I've eaten…read moreOaxacan in San Antonio, off the backs of taco trucks in San Diego, and in straw thatched huts all across Mexico. There's no way I'm finding decent Mexican in northern Vermont, right? Well, ok, there's one for sure: Trail Break in White River Junction. But it's a Wednesday, and they're closed. Besides, we were just in Burlington, and the nearest city on our route is Montpelier. Ok, what's what around here? Cute little city. Cool buildings. And hey, there's a place called Mad Taco. Let's give that a try. The logo is John Tenniel's timeless portrait of the Mad Hatter, with added tacos on his plates. Nice touch, and I almost missed it. And now I have Grace Potter's cover of White Rabbit stuck in my brain... "Feed your head!!" Grace Potter is from around here, no? I bet she eats here when she isn't basking in Rock Stardomness. Wife and I ordered burritos, hers was carnitas, mine al pastor. We also put in for chips with guacamole. A simple dinner fare to be eaten in the front seat of our car before we start putting on more miles on our way back to Western Mass. The guy behind the counter was super cool, and helpful too. Food only took about 10 minutes or so. He set us up with everything we needed to eat take out, and I snagged a little to go cup of mild cilantro sauce (#3 on the spicy scale, not super hot) The burritos were both enormous and delicious. (Interruption from the future, I've been eating the leftovers for 2 days. Still good, nom nom nom.) My only hint of "c'mon Vermont, you can do better" was the guacamole. While the chips were astounding (lightly salted, hand fried tortilla rounds you break apart yourself, crispy perfection.) Their guacamole was just, "meh." It was mostly just squished avocado. I don't think it had any salt, lime, garlic, or anything else in it. There was a lot of it for the price we paid, but very plain. I'm not sure if that's to cater to local tastes? Like are the regulars afraid of a little jalapeno? Hard to know. If it's me, I'm punching it up with a touch of adobo, just a little hot sauce, maybe a squeeze of lime, some salsa? Your mileage may vary. That said, I don't feel the guacamole is more than a half star drop, and I always round up. Have I gone mad? Completely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best taco joints are... Mad Taco, I give you a mercurial 5 stars! Well done.
