One of (if not the worst) experiences from start to finish at a restaurant. As far as food, I'd say it's average Mexican. As far as service and the dining experience as a whole, I'd say you'd be better off at McDonalds 10/10 times. Our 3 orders of Fajitas showed up, then it took 15 mins to get all the sides and tortillas. My daughters salad literally never came. My son and his friends entrees came somewhere in between all of this mess. We asked for more chips during the wait, they never showed. As we finally were all eating the luke warm fajitas, my daughters salad showed up (we're talking about 30 mins after Fajita meats actually came to start this debacle) and the server actually acknowledged he found a "stray salad". Honestly at this point all I could do was laugh. What wasn't funny was that I saw 3 other tables/people complaining at some point during my evening there. Fast forward...He drops off a couple desserts as an apology to end the night and then advises us that he got us 15% off as he leaves the bill. If there was ever a night for a comp meal or perhaps a 50% off, this comedy of errors was the night. Then as I review the bill, I noticed the $13 "stray salad" was still on there. Talk about adding some insult to injury! I took up all of this with the manager, who decided we were worthy of 25% off. He then re-did the bill and as he dropped it off he told us he scored us another 5% for 30% off total. I'm not really a screamer, and again it was just pure comedy at this point. And the icing on the cake (if I was even still hungry) was the manager offering to buy me lunch the next day if I'd come back! read more

I went here with two friends on Friday evening and was really disappointed with the food. We all thought the menu looked great but not one of us enjoyed the food. The salsa with chips was super underwhelming and one friend thought there was a ketchup-y taste to it. We all got tacos and the tortillas were so soggy you couldn't even pick it up to take a bite. We all had to literally eat them with forks. Service was prompt and friendly but they struck out with all different taco types: Al pastor, carne asada, Baja fish, and shrimp. My friend enjoyed the fried avocado fries appetizer to be fair but they were stingy with the dipping sauces. So disappointing! read more

My family and I came here last night since we are in town for an end of the summer trip before the kids go back to school. What brought us in was the colorful menu I saw online and the fun name. The employees were very nice and the dining room was okay, though small. We figured the bar area must take up most of the space. Unfortunately, none of us enjoyed our food (I got the carne asada tacos, my husband the fish tacos, my MIL got the carnitas tacos). The sides were all bland and flavorless. It all tasted very basic and my husband (who is Mexican) said the place was too "gimmicky" with the Frida Kahlo paintings and they should focus more on authentic flavors. It was also very expensive for what it was. We regretted not going to a real Mexican restaurant for dinner and would not return to this place. read more

I had two of the best, most unique flavored tacos EVER! Tikka Masala and Mole. Wow! Beautiful decor and very nice staff.

First/last time here. Placed four dinner orders to hurried flustered server. Three arrived, my wife's not. We waited, and waited.. no fourth meal. My friend went to ask the waitress about the delay, was told they'ed bring it out when it was ready. He asked why the delay whereupon the owner walked up and interrupted not with an apology but accused him of shouting. Said she had forgotten to put the fourth dinner order in. Very confrontational. (Apparently not the first time). See other reviews. Downhill from there. Dinner arrived no tortillas which both ladies had ordered. Same drill with owner. He came back with tortillas and an attitude ultimately telling my friend "F" you. ( in front of our wives) And walking off. Everyone now on edge. Busboy tried to smooth over with the only apology . I've had my own business for 51 years and have never witnessed ( or demonstrated ) that guttural type of behavior. ( fortunately.) Obviously never returning. read more

I've never left a bad review on Yelp - but this place deserves one. We stopped by for lunch Jan. 7th. Our menu had dried food inside of it. They weren't busy at all, but it took 15 minutes for our waitress to come by. We ordered a beer and a jalapeño margarita. Another 15 minutes go by and she plunks a beer down - with no glass. She said they had no jalapeños, so I asked her to just bring a regular margarita. She finally comes back with a drink that tasted like kool aid. And, there was dry food on the glass too. The food was nothing to write home about, and we received cold, carne asada tacos. The only bright spot was the salsa. read more

Was underwhelmed with this "mexican" food. My husband ordered shrimp and there was nothing Mexican about it. It came with diced potatoes and zucchini? My ribeye beef fajitas didn't come served sizzling as it should. Plus the beef was not even ribeye as far as I could tell. And not that much beef in it too warrant the price. Tequilas are WAY over priced. We are all for paying for what we get but that was a tad much. Anyway, we won't be back and wish this restaurant ups it's game. On a positive note, service was excellent. read more

Great location in Old Town La Quinta, now under new management with an updated take on Mexican cuisine. After a few visits decided to write a review. The menu is modern with healthier sized portions, less fat and less salt (salt shaker available). The food is great. For dinner, I had the Mole chicken enchiladas. Excellent: The mole tastes freshly made with all flavors well blended just like Abuella makes. mmmm. Finished with Cinnamon Churros with ice cream as desert, it was delicious. As a retired chef, I am always looking for dishes with fresh ingredients which are properly cooked with authentic flavors in addition to a great presentation. TQLAS did not disappoint Severs outstanding, friendly and effective. read more

First time, Last time...worst 2 taco salads ever, 1 corn on the cob, a bottle of beer & and a $19 (!) margarita that was so sour I couldn't drink it. Sent it back, but the one they brought back was no better. Actually asked for Patron Silver, but I think they measured it with an eye dropper! The taco salad had limp brownish Iceburg lettuce, and the scoop of guacamole on the top was tasteless. They even charged $5 for a small basket of chips and a tiny salsa which is standard and free at every other Mexican restaurant I have ever been to. Total bill = $75 including tip ( wasn't the server's fault!) Would NEVER go back! read more

First time dining at TQLAS in Old Town La Quinta. Nice vibe, courteous staff, great decor both indoor and in the outdoor patio area. This place was popping on the 4th of July! We were really hoping TQLAS would be one of our new regular places to go for flavorful Mexican food and drinks. Unfortunately, that was not the case. My fish tacos were on the bland side with little flavor. The steak fajitas had zero flavor, no seasoning of any kind. We had to add table salt and pepper to give our dishes some flavoring. My margarita seemed watered down with hardly any flavor. I'm normally used to having complimentary chips but they were $5 and I felt chips weren't worth $5 so I didn't order them. The customers in the next table we're complaining about their food being tasteless with no flavor. We also ordered the street corn (cob) which was the only thing with flavor. I suppose you can't mess up a corn on the cob though. I'd really like to give TQLAS another try and select other entrees the next time... or maybe we'll just order the street corn and drink water. Hopefully, we will have a better food experience. I'm kinda still rooting for you TQLAS. read more

The restaurant was in a cute area and not crowded at all, easy to park. Greeters were extremely friendly, our waiter was a little rude though. No big deal, maybe he was having a bad day. Our party all ordered Margaritas and loved them! Very strong and large, we only needed one. The main courses were tasty, but the beans were not. They had zero seasoning, BUT, the owner was there and when we complained, he actually went to the kitchen and had the cooks change the recipe and brought out 2 little cups of newly seasoned beans. Much better, but would've been cooler if he brought out some for the entire party instead of a taste test lol. We really appreciated his friendly demeanor though. The only other complaint: the tortillas. Tasted fine, but every one of our tacos (hard or soft) fell apart. One party member actually asked for extra tortillas to support the broken one. Sounds like it'd be more efficient to get a new tortilla recipe. read more

Back again to our favorite place! Today we had a new server (new to us), Ruby, who was patient and amazing. My husband and I tend to stay a while and enjoy a margarita and appetizer before ordering... and Ruby was understanding and checked on us throughout. Another fantastic lunch at TQLAS. We recommend this place to all friends and family. As stated before, we have never had a bad experience or service since the new ownership. Thank you Ruby & TQLAS! read more

I'm so glad I didn't read the Yelp reviews before coming to this restaurant, seriously, all the references in the previous one star reviews by the "locals" and actually telling others to go to the other older established neighboring restaurant makes me suspicious about the higher than normal numbers of 1 star reviews (especially since it looks like a majority who wrote the bad reviews have only posted one to two reviews before....hmmmmm) -- a concentrated effort to quash the new competition perhaps? Competition is a good thing and the more variety the better! Perhaps a tweaking of algorithms is needed for all of those questionable 1 star reviews! I digress, hubby and I hit a good night because we thought the dishes were delicious. I ordered the cheese enchiladas in green sauce and hubs had the carnitas plate. Both very flavorful and incredibly generous in portions. The owner was extremely friendly especially once he and my hubs started talking tequila and comparing their likes and dislikes. Not to be a snob but if you are looking for cheap Cuervo gold "marghies" this is not the place for you but if you like to sip your extra anejo, then pull up a chair and enjoy the libations. Hostess was lovely, Omar our server was fast and attentive but most of all, you know the owner knows his tequila when you see El Gran Corralejos Reserve sitting on the wall. read more

First and last time visiting. We came for lunch on Sunday around 1130am. We were trying to branch out and check out a new place and this was a fail. It took forever to just get chips and salsa. It took so long for our waitress to come over that we just ordered when she did. We asked for guacamole appetizer and we were told they were out. We ordered three kids meals and despite "putting it right in" it took forever. At one point, another waiter came by and asked if we had been helped. Once we got our meals all the food was ok at best. I got the two taco plate and the carne asada was rubbery, the chicken was so dry and the guacamole tasted sour. I'm really bummed bc the place is cute but I will not be back. read more

This is the most underrated gem in all of La Quinta! The food is incredibly delicious, the staff (ask to sit in Hector's section) is beyond friendly and feels like family, and the cocktails are o so delicious We've been three times during our quick visit and keep dreaming and craving the tortilla chips, guacamole and salsa. The chile rellnos, pork verde and carnitas have been our go-to's.
