Toyori is a small establishment and on a Friday night we had to wait a few minutes to be seated. This was a minuscule burden to bear as the food was simply divine! It is next to mensho but the line is much shorter. I will say the system for their waiting list is a bit confusing. You are supposed to put your name on the list and then probably leave or form a queue. It wasn't very clear so we stood by the list until we were called. The menus are printed on soft vinyl-like paper, kind of like a photo book. It set the tone for the decadent meal! When we sat, we immediately received cucumber salad and potato salad as an appetizer. They had a few donburis, sizzling plates, and ramens. I chose a donburi as I feel it is relatively uncommon to find donburi in Japanese restaurants in Houston. It was so good! The meat was really tasty and the rice was perfect. I also had the geso karaage and it was quite good!! Overall, solid, classic Japanese food, elevated to perfection! We came across Toyori Sizzling Ramen because it was the only joint with a line when we arrived at Dun Huang Plaza. The window display was definitely enticing because the plastic food displays looked very substantial in portion for the prices. Since we were not too hungry, we decided to explore the plaza's other restaurants and shops before making a decision. After walking a couple of rounds, we circled back to Toyori and there was no more line. So, we immediately made the decision to give it a try. The restaurant seating is nicely arranged along both walls and down the middle of the restaurant. Accent lighting gave the place a relaxing and cozy feel. However, we noticed the service staff were working at different rates. Some were taking on more than the others. My daughter likes miso ramen, we unanimouslydecided on the miso ramen. The plastic display showed large pieces of chashu lining the side of a large bowl. However, when the actual ramen bowl arrived, we could hardly see the chashu pieces. A case of misrepresentation ? It's always a pleasant experience when coming here. I have introduced many people to dine here and all have expressed their lovely experience as well. Service can be sketchy at times during peak dining time but it's never bad. It can get packed and there can be a wait time. I'm a big fan of sizzling platters so my food stays hot while eating, the ribeye steak being my favorite, with the black pepper sauce. My complaint is that it's never cooked medium rare, usually served medium and ends up getting more cooked as it sits on the hot platter. I get it with the spaghetti so I can take it to go and enjoy it the next day because I can't finish this entire plate in one sitting. The side vegetables of frozen corn, carrots, and brussels sprouts with the steak is more than enough for me so the spaghetti is a bonus. On this trip, we had a party of 5, enjoyed lots of appetizers but my favorite is the geso karaage - I favor this because I love fried squid. We tried the beef salad, just ok. My friend felt the grilled shrimp was a tad bit overcooked but then it was served on the sizzling platter and she ate too slow. The unagi steak was really flavorful, ratio of rice to fish was perfect. The restaurant is always clean and food comes quick. A carafe of water is placed on every table so you don't have to wait for a refill. Parking is a challenge most days but especially on the weekend so be prepared to search or park one of the two parking garages. Or you can save yourself the hassle of parking by catching a rideshare. given that toyori is situated right next to mensho, i feel like people often come in ordering ramen and holding it to the same high standards. to me, that comparison feels a bit unfair. toyori really shines with their sizzling plates, which are clearly their specialty. portions are super generous for the price, and everything feels very affordable. the steak especially is sooo worth it. service was friendly, and we appreciated the small apps and yakult at the end :) the takoyaki was light on the eel sauce and not heavy on the mayo. there was barely any octopus though, which made it a little too doughy, but it was still tasty overall. the ribeye & chicken and the short rib sizzling platters were solid. id heard the meats can be a bit tough, so i asked for them cooked more rare than i usually order, and they came out tender, especially the chicken. the sauce itself was a little bland, though, and we had to add quite a bit of salt. the steak tonkatsu wasn't bad but nothing super memorable. the gyudon was comforting, with lots of fatty brisket marinated in a savory sweet sauce and soft onions. the only downside was that the rice was pretty soaked in oil toward the bottom; it definitely didn't need that much grease. also the miso soup it came with was basically just water... overall, toyori is a good spot if you order the right things, great for a casual, satisfying meal read more

I came here recently with a friend. We shared the beef rib ramen and the steak over noodles with black pepper sauce. The ramen was more Chinese than Japanese. It was different, the beef was tender, but I didn't love the broth and the noodles were more egg noodle style. The steak was cooked perfectly and tender, it was on the thin side. I ordered the Prime Ribeye Donburi, while my friend went for the beef ramen. My dish took a bit longer to arrive, but the flavor made it completely worth the wait. I did end up adding a bit of spicy sauce to my donburi, but aside from that, it was incredible. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to this location again. Deep Fried Fish Nuggets, $6.50: loved the crunch. No overpowering fishy taste. Very enjoyable with a bit of hot sauce mixed into the tartar. Fried Gyoza, $7: a bit over fried, looked to have been deep fried and not pan fried. Very crunchy and falling apart in some places. Sizzling Rib-eye steak with spaghetti, $18: Wanted to try this item because it looked good in the reviews. Had it with the mixed sauce that was recommended. I will say not bad, but not great. It was a interesting dish, but the short ribs may have been better. We had it sauce on the plate, which helped it soak into the noodles a bit more. In general not bad, but more of a novelty than something I would get again. Tonkotsu Shoyu, $13: Above average ramen for Houston. A proper sized portion, with a good amount of toppings. The broth was flavorful and no bad aftertaste. In general a good dinning experience and if you are looking for Japanese food with a large menu selection I would give them a try. My friends and I opted in to try this place since we didn't feel like waiting in line for Mensho. The service here was great! We got complimentary Yakult drinks at the conclusion of our meal, and our server tried their best to stay on top of things on a busy Saturday night. The food itself here was alright though. I got the Signature Spicy Tan Tan, and it was a good level of spice as someone who loves spicy food. Other than that nothing about the ramen stood out to me and separated itself from being on the same level as other ramen places. As one would expect in a busy Dun Huang Plaza on a Saturday night, this restaurant was packed. We arrived thankfully without much wait at about 7 PM. A couple minutes later, the waitlist was filling up fast. We ordered the Takoyaki as a starter and then got the Beef Rib Ramen and Sizzling Fried Fish Plate. The takoyaki was delicious! This was personally my first time having it. It was nice and crispy on the outside then perfectly soft and creamy on the inside. The bonito flakes provide a unique additional texture while the eel and mayo sauce give an added flavor. Though be careful when you first bite it because it can pretty hot if you don't wait a bit. The mains came out without much wait. There was just enough of the gravy sauce to pour on the fish and rice without it being too overwhelming. It had a good savory, meaty flavor that complimented the dish. The fish was crispy and flaky. The rice was good. Some of it was a bit hard. That would be my only complaint. No complaints about the veggies and egg that come with the plate. I didn't try the beef rib ramen but it seemed like a very generous portion with two hearty sized ribs. My friend was visiting in town for the weekend and I sacrificed some studying time to get dinner with him right before our biomed exam lulll. I'm glad I did though because we caught up and had goood food. We went to Toyori in Houston Chinatown since he wanted to eat something that had noodles. There were people waiting outside to get seated when we got there but it only took us 10 minutes to get seated. The interior was really nice and I loved the ambient lighting. My friend got the spicy tantan ramen. It had a spicy pork bone broth with pork chashu, minced pork, fungus, corn, and peanuts. The broth was very bold with the peanuty flavor. The chashu was really tender and the ramen overall was really solid. I got the unagi steak donburi which is an eel rice bowl with cheese tamagoyaki and a soft boiled egg. The eel was really good at first but I felt like it tasted the same after a few bites. The star of the show was actually the rice with the furikake and sauce to me. Another one of my friends got the signature ribeye steak with spaghetti and the black pepper sauce. Another friend got the gyu donburi which is a rice bowl with prime sliced beef and teriyaki sauce. So trying this place out for the first time and I wasn't disappointed!!! I asked the waitress who sat me, if there were any suggestions and for the first time in a long time, the server's recommendation turned out to be great!! She offered me water and a side of pickled radish and a mall portion of potato salad. I ended up torn between the fired gyoza or the chili oil dumpling. For those of you who are military, the did off a military discount, which places in Houston rarely give out a military discount, so I was elated when the gentlemen who took my payment said that they did have a military discount and thanked me for my service!! Now this place is hidden and located in the Asian Aires of what I think is called Bellaire here in Houston. I've tried other ramen places around the airport area and down town but this place is phenomenal!!! The ramen broth is so flavorful and well seasoned!! The only thing you may not like about the beef ramen was the larger chunks of ginger, which I had no problem eating lol!!! But I will definitely come back again to try more of their great food!! The chicken was a unique experience for me and the broth was super delicious. It was kinda creamy - the perfect consistency. They give a description of how it's made in the menu, which piqued my curiosity. It also comes with a side of chicken thigh, which was actually kind of bland, but I didn't mind the extra food to take home. Both ramens had a delicious halfegg - cooked perfectly. The yolk - I don't know how they cook it but it's not too runny or hard - a perfect gelatin consistency that's hard to describe. And the seasoning of the egg was also on point. I must say that the chicken meatball was a bit unwieldy until I cut it in pieces. But still delicious! I also tried the dumplings. Delicious! Although the chili sauce was somewhat overpowering, but that probably because I ordered mine to go so it sat in the sauce in the box for a few minutes, but the sauce is spicy regardless. Super smooth texture to the dumplings. One of my all time favorite spots in Texas! Their customer service is impeccable and their staff is extremely attentive and kind. Everything on their menu looks absolutely delicious and everything I've tried so far looks exactly like their menu photos. The pork was good but as a picky eater, it was too non structured. The seasoning on the pork was very nice though. The rice bowl was overly fatty (greasy) and we could not finish it because of this, but otherwise, it was a very good rice bowl. The service was quick, we gave our phone number so that they would call when a table was free and it only took 30min. There is stuff to do in the area so we just walked around.
