They seemed irritated simply because I didn't know I needed to give them my tray instead of each pastry one by one to purchase. The bulgogi roll I had tasted old and stale, even though the sign said it was just made that morning. The cranberry cream cheese bread was really good though. It is a Korean bakery that is located just inside a side door for the market eatery. The first thing I spotted was a chocolate croissant, so I grabbed one of those. The second thing I noticed was a red bean bun, so I grab that too. Then I stood in line to pay for it and headed out The chocolate croissant was literally a croissant dipped halfway into chocolate. The chocolate was only on the outside, not on the inside. It was OK. The red bean bun was sweet bread with a filling of red beans paste. ALL LOOKS, NO SUBSTANCE We were visiting my daughter on her birthday and wanted to do something special. We had seen the fancy cakes at Tous Les Jours in H-Mart. There's a lot to love at H-Mart and there's some great food in the food court, so we were optimistic that this would be a special treat. I cringed a little at the $40 price, but we'd traveled 2000 miles, so went for a Mango Cloud. The decoration seemed nice and it came with a tiny pack of candles and a plastic serving knife with matches in the handle (but nothing to light them on). What appeared in the case to be an orange gradient on the frosting on the side proved to be a tinted acetate collar. When we actually cut into the cake, there were 3 layers of sponge with small bits of mango in the whipped frosting between the bottom and middle layers. The flavor was a real nothing-burger. The frosting had a greasy mouth feel and the sponge had essentially no taste at all. At the very least, they could have added mango bits to the other interior frosting layer. Overall, a huge disappointment, but lesson learned. read more

The cake itself was flavorless. The filling inside over powered my palette with sweetness but not in a good way. The best part of this cake was the white portion of the icing on top of the cake. Every time I go to H-Mart in Austin, I always walk by Tous les Jours which is a Korean chain that serves French-inspired baked goods. I'm a sucker for a good pastry, so I checked out a few items such as: - Strawberry Soft Bread: the bread is pillowy soft and filled with a sweet strawberry cream that's almost reminiscent of a strawberry yogurt. Probably my fav of the 4! ($3.25) - 4.5/5 - Melon Bread: dense texture (think: concha), but softer. Not the biggest fan of melon, but this was more mild and went well with the bread. This one surprised me! ($3) - 4.25/5 - Banana Nutella Pastry: this has a crispy base and a great chocolate banana flavor that tastes as good as you'd expect. ($3) - 4.25/5 - Honey Cheese Mochi Pancake: the mochi gives this a chewy consistency, while also remaining soft on the outside. Topped with cheese and honey, I found this to be the most interesting item I got. You get 3 for $5 - 3.75/5 All in all, there is a huge amount of variety not shown here with lots of different flavors and types of breads. I definitely plan on coming back to try some others. I enjoyed trying their custard bun, cocoa-infused croissant, strawberry-cheese strudel, and the 'Strawberry Soft', a pink baguette-shaped pastry stuffed with strawberry butter cream. The croissant was to die for, and the strudel a close second in pure butter-crisp pastry goodness. The custard bun is likewise very good, if a bit bland. The 'Soft' was a surprising disappointment, where the color promises a bit more strawberry flavor than it can deliver. The staff is friendly enough, but between the 'choke points' between the display cases and their odd system to check out, it's a bit slow in this shop. I could eat a plateful right now. For me, all that matters is whether what is sold in the store tastes good. If Tous Les Jours's food engineers working at corporate headquarters have learned how to make baked goods that have a long shelf life, Well, Then, All Power to Tous Les Jour's Food Engineers! * * * I have never bought anything bad from Tous Les Jours. That said, I definitely have personal favorites. I kill for their roll cakes. If I am buying a roll cake for the office - I can be in paralysis for a quarter hour agonizing over whether to get a green tea cake or a mocha cake or a honey walnut cake. I will be delighted with whatever flavor I get, but it breaks my heart to leave the other flavors in the store. Samuel C likes anything with a hot dog in it. They do a grilled frankfurter in a crust that is my idea of a fine snack. For Yelpers who want a more Asian, less Western, option, look seriously at the Manju. Those are tiny little filled pastries - good for two or three bites. Different manju have different fillings. Many of those fillings are rich, substantial and filling, but they are as light as air after you have eaten them. Two or three bites leaves you completely satisfied. But you could still run a fifty yard dash afterwards at a blazing top speed. Try doing that after eating the cannonballs served at most other American bakeries. And the manjus generally taste amazing. Their Yuzu manju are the most yuzu-y tangerine-y things you will ever eat in your life. * * * So you can clearly see I am a big fan here - even if, technically, Tous Les Jours takes short cuts. At home, I have a whole bunch of 1960's Betty Crocker cookbooks. Back in those days, Betty Crocker used to take all sorts of short cuts. I still make those recipes today. I went to go sit in the bakery because it was much warmer and a worker from there came over there and told me I cannot sit there because I got my food at the food court. There was not a single other person in this dining area. I told her it was freezing and uncomfortable and she looked at me and said "I don't care if you are cold. That is not my problem" As soon as I got up and was walking away, a cockroach climbed over my chair. It was small but still at the end I guess I was glad I was leaving but I could not believe that the person working there was so rude and the hygiene so disgusting that a cockroach was on my chair. We've been here several times to buy pastries but this time my daughters and I ordered pastries and 2 bobas, Honeydew blended and strawberry blended. My family always comes here to order cakes for special events. The cakes can cost quite a bit compared to what you'd buy at the local bakery at your grocery store, but the aesthetics, flavor, and texture are hard to beat, particularly the cloud cakes! If you have trouble enjoying the heavy richness of American cakes (especially their frosting), then TLJ might offer a solution to your problems. The frosting is whipped to an almost meringue lightness, and the sweetness is never overbearing. It's just the perfect amount, complimented with the tartness of fresh berries. I think my family's personal favorite right now is the strawberry - it looks like it'd be toothachingly sweet, but it's a bright sweetness that is honestly rather addicting. The workers there are very competent and helpful, which is admirable considering how fast-paced their workflow can be. If you wish to order a cake, come in-person at least one business day in advance to select the cake and size, then pay. Last Thursday I stopped by HMart around 9pm to buy some drink, and when passing TLJ counter, I saw multiple cakes were still put in the counter, it seems like they want to continue to sell it on the next day. I'm not saying that bakery should not sell overnight cakes. But here, the staff always insist that their cakes are guaranteed to be daily made. But why you keep overnight cakes and lie to customers? This is a cute little bakery in the front of the HMart. I can really only eat the macarons so I can only really comment on those. I was able to eat all but two flavors (cookies and crème and red velvet) which seemed like they may have had glutenous crumbs on the outside. The ones I had were super fresh and soft. It was like biting into a cloud. The flavors have a nice range. I believe there are like 10 or so? I personally think the rose, green tea, lemon and blueberry lavender were the best. The only issue is the lines. My first time here a guy cut in front of me because he felt I wasn't going to be ready to order which was wrong. Irritating. The second time was a bit of chaos with two workers talking over each other to get your order. It is also a bit off putting to have someone ask how many you'd like when you're really thinking in terms of flavors to try.
