This is a classic, old-school pizza spot that offers takeout only. The pizza itself is definitely above average--great crust and decent flavor--but the options are pretty limited. They only offer one size and stick to the standard types, so don't expect anything adventurous here. The owner mentioned they're looking to sell, which might explain why the place feels a bit stuck in time. While it's a solid choice for the area, I wouldn't go out of my way to get it. If you're nearby and craving some straightforward pizza, it's worth a try.

#1 on the Food Network for pizza? Not sure why. Got there around 2 pm on a Saturday. It's a little bit from Coney Island and parking is horrible. Found a spot about 3 blocks away. Walked in and asked to order some slices to go, was told by what I would call a miserable older woman that said "we don't sell slices". Website says other. Ok, drove an hour to try their pizza so I order their pepperoni and mushroom pie, was told that's extra - I say ok. Pie is small, maybe 12 inches. Crust is thin and cooked perfectly - but that's about it. $36 for a pie I could get at my local place for half the price - was not impressed. Lacked in taste and toppings were sparse for the price I paid.

Totonno's is the home of the first Neapolitan pizza maker in New York City. Very old school. No seating. Takeout or delivery only.

I don't know what happened to this place... maybe the pizza chef changed. 60 dollars for 2 pies and they are tiny, you can eat a slice in 3 bites.....doesn't even taste close the original totonno's

My bf and I won the Joey special (2 pizzas!) at a FRIENDS-themed event in my hometown, and got Totonno's pizzas delivered all the way to CA. So this review is only based on the taste and quality of the food. The pepperoni pizza wasn't too heavy on the cheese, and it balanced nicely with the sweet tomato sauce and tasty slices of pepperoni. Even the crust had good flavor, a noticeable difference compared to other pizzerias. It was so good, we devoured an entire Large pie in less than 15 minutes, barely talking to each other cuz we were too busy stuffing our faces :D It's not the best pizza I've ever had (there's just way too much competition), but it was still pretty damn good.

A classic slice! They are still hanging in after all these years, and according to the family, the Post article got them over 200 inquiries about buying the place to carry on. It's more of a pizza aficionado destination than a tourist spot, because not everybody is in the know. And that's a good thing, imho. They've pared down a lot, no indoor tables anymore, only open 12-5, and only on weekends. This is NY pizza history here, and everyone should make the trip out at least once. Years ago, I met a guy who said he regularly drives out from Long Island to get a pie. The thing that makes this a great slice is the dough and the sauce. Anybody can put cheese. The sauce is perfect, not too sweet, you can taste tomato paste but no aftertaste, just the right amount of salt or seasoning, not bland, very well balanced, there's not too much going on here and that works perfectly. I also think that toppings would overwhelm this, other than the fresh basil. The dough is something else. I seriously examined this dough to see what it is great about it. It has a bit of spring to it, and looking at a cross section of the crust like some sort of pizza geologist, I see a lot of tiny air holes in the dough, not no holes like some, or a bunch of larger air holes like the more bready slices, this is Goldilocks just right. Something is going on here in the magic of the yeast proof, or maybe it's love for the simple and good that comes out in the pie. And if course they know how to use their oven, so it's done correct, and slightly crispy on the bottom, folds well, etc. The walls showcase a bunch of history: old newspaper clippings, pix of the original pizza guy Mr. Totonno in front of the original Lombardi's as a kid, family pix of the descendants at various times of their lives, celebrities, etc. The guy pointed out each of his personal favorite pix once he saw me looking. I noticed what looks like the original embossed tin tiles, either ceiling tile or backsplash, covering the walls, painted over, of course. Some other notables on the wall: The Ramones came all the way out from Rock rock Rockaway Beach for this slice! Guiliani in his heyday, Bloomburg, some actors... There are old school shop windows that frame the door in a style that is maybe a century old, and it makes you wonder what this part of Coney Island was like when it was a small Italian enclave. A really nice trip, and an even better slice. Perfect day. Go eat some pizza here while you still can. Our NYC classics won't be around forever. Important!: Tip jar is behind the partition, don't forget! It's understated because they aren't shoving a tip sign in your face and begging for tips like many of the new restaurants, but these people deserve it. Ask the lady if you don't see it.

In love with the pizza at Totonno's! A pie of red and a pie of white is where it is at and that is the play. Being around for many years, Totonno's has not lost a step in the pizza game. The service is not that of a fine dining establishment but is perfect for what Totonno's is and has always been. The ambiance is that of a small pizzeria that has been around for many years in the same location. It is not the reason why you come here but is good enough for you to sit at a table and enjoy the pizza. I especially love how the pizza has both a great chew and crunch to it. The white pie is garlicky and I love it! Just go and get both pies, you can't go wrong.

It's back. To go only, one size only but lord have mercy are these pies the elite. We went there on Saturday, got the pies in a flash and chowed down in my double parked car.

Totonno's Pizzeria Napolitana is a New York-style pizzeria that opened in Brooklyn, New York in 1924. It was founded by Italian immigrant Antonio "Totonno" Pero. After arriving in New York City in 1903, Pero began working at Gennaro Lombardi's grocery store in Manhattan's Little Italy. Lombardi and Pero began making tomato pies wrapped in paper and tied with string and sold them to hungry factory workers. In 1905, Lombardi received the first mercantile license to operate as a pizzeria restaurant. Pero worked as Lombardi's first pizzaiolo. The pizzeria soon had clientele that included the famous Italian tenor Enrico Caruso. After 20 years, Pero left Lombardi's and opened his own pizzeria in Coney Island. Pero trained his son Gennaro "Jerry" to make pizza. Jerry took over the business after his father became ill. He would continue to makes pies at Totonno's until he passed away in 1994. Today the establishment is run by Totonno's grandchildren Louise "Cookie" Cimineri, Frank Balzano and Antoinette "Annette" Balzano. Michael Gammone serves as their long-time pizzaiolo. My wife and I visited Totonno's for the first time in July 2019. We took a trip out to Coney Island for the day. We arrived at Totonno's when they opened for lunch, but an employee came out with a frantic look on her face. She informed us that there was a problem with the coal-fired oven and that they were going to need to delay opening time. Instead we got lunch at another Coney Island establishment: Nathan's Famous. Later in the day, we called Totonno's and they informed us that they had finally opened. We went back for an early dinner. They continued to have problems with the oven (which was causing pies to cook much slower) but we didn't mind the wait. We decided to order the Pizza Margherita and the Pizza Bianca (Mozzarella, Pecorino Romano, Garlic and Olive Oil). The pizza was excellent! The sauce on the Margherita was perfect and the crust on both pies was nice and crisp! Cookie came out and apologized to all of the customers for the long wait. We told her that the pizza was well worth it. We'll definitely be stopping back there on our next visit to Coney Island!

Solid pizza with a legendary reputation. It was not open inside so I just ordered takeout. They looked closed but you can order and pick it up. The pizza is very good and the crust is perfectly crunchy and chewy. It didn't have that coal fired look or taste that I remember from years ago but it was still good. Hope this place stays around forever!

Best Pizza in NYC in my opinion. They have a lot of recognition and I can see why. All ingredients are super fresh, the dough has so much flavor too and is really good. I don't usually eat the crusts and I ate them here. And the bottom of the pizza was not soggy! Even on the pepperoni slice. I love crispy crust, they do it right. Also the tomato sauce is a bit sweet but not too much. Delicious. Long wait though. About an hour to sit down and an hour for the pizza. Also if there is a wait you have to wait outside so glad it was a beautiful day! We had a group of 5. They only have one oven and do to go orders too so it takes a long time. And we were starving. Also if you order more than one pie they bring it out one at a time, also the tables couldn't really hold more than one pie anyway. They sell beer and wine in bottles the size of a glass. Pretty cheap at 5 dollars. You cant really get a glass of wine for 5 dollars in NYC.

    Ask the Community - Totonno's

It's April 2022. Does anyone know if Totonno's is open for indoor dining again? We miss them!

They don't seem to be open at all. I drive by every day.

Have they reopened yet? I noticed the hours are posted back on Yelp and Google but the yet to drive by and see them open.

They have not opened at all since the pandemic (as of June 2022). Nor updated customers on when they will. It appears they want to sellout and pivot to possibly delivering frozen pies nationwide instead of the Brooklyn pizza we know and love.

Are they open?? Everytime I drive by they are closed. Such a sad sight.

Yes! They just posted on Facebook. They'll be open on Saturdays and Sunday's for takeout if you use Grubhub, Uber Eats, or the Slice App!

Can you buy pizza by the slice here or do you have to buy the whole pie?

    Whole pie only

Is Totonno's open? It's been closed now for the last few days... any info would be appreciated, thanks!

No it is not open i live in the area drive or walk pass everyday

    Why are they closed today(Thursday)?

They are currently only open Friday through Sunday.

How long can I expect the wait to be for two on a Saturday 4:30/5pm? No idea if this is a wait on line for an hour type of place or what.

20 mins? You'll probably get seated before that, if there is even a wait. It's popular but sorta out of the way and has been around forever- not like a new hype or anything. So my guess there'd be sporadic waits around the busiest hours only because… Read more

It is definitely the best pizza in the US; I say this even after visiting Frank Pepe and Sally's in New Haven, and it's honestly not even close. On our last day before heading back to SF, we ordered a massive whole pie: half burrata, half pepperoni. It nailed the classic NYC slice with a thin, crisp crust and the perfect balance of cheese and sauce. It was so good that my daughter finished her burrata half over three separate sittings: at the shop, on the plane, and once she got home. The pie just kept calling to her! Be prepared for long lines, but it is worth it (and the Brooklyn location definitely has shorter lines than the Manhattan spots). It's not really a sit-down place, so you just have to grab a spot at the bar-top tables if you can find room. The service was good and fast. Di Fara has received numerous accolades, including being named the "Best pizza in New York" by publications such as New York and Serious Eats. The New York Times described the restaurant as "one of the most acclaimed and sought-after pizza shops in New York City." In 2011, Zagat ranked it as the top pizza restaurant in the city, and in 2013, Frommer's called its pizza "the Best Hand-Made Pizza in New York City." Chef Anthony Bourdain also expressed admiration for the restaurant's pizza. I had long hoped to visit Di Fara, so I decided to make a trip from Connecticut. Upon entering, my son and I observed that it was quite busy. There is also a window for ordering, but we chose to go inside to order our food to experience the atmosphere fully. We each ordered a freshly prepared Sicilian slice. Unlike some places, there was no pre-made pizza on display. Each slice is made to order, and it takes about twenty-five minutes to prepare. When we received our pizza, it was notably greasy. The Sicilian slices resembled a full meal, topped with garlic and pepperoni. The garlic was quite prominent and flavorful, adding a nice punch which I liked. The pepperoni was crispy, and the undercarriage had a nice crunch, though it was also quite oily. In my personal opinion, it wasn't the best slice I've ever tasted. However, I understand that when the owner, Dom, was alive, the pizza was considered exceptional by many. I would rate it around 3.5 stars, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience pizza from one of New York's most iconic establishments.

I cooked the pizza at 480 degrees in an electric pizza oven for 10 minutes, and the result was very good. I added a drizzle of hot honey, and it was spectacular (okay, I also added some fresh picked jalapeños as well). The pizza was hot and melted in the center, and the crust was very crisp, but still had some chew. Wow. This was the best frozen pizza I have had. Bar none. New York, you spoiled me when it came to pizza. Now I can get a taste of New York at home. Great job! I may or may not eat the last 3 pieces currently sitting in the fridge before bed.

I came back today and the staff today were also very welcoming. Ambiance 5/5: Rustic red brick interior with warm lighting. It was definitely bustling on a Friday night. Food 5/5: Delicious pizza. I do regret that I ate it cold after driving 30 minutes to pick it up so I did not get the full experience. But the crust was still crunchy. I do wish the toppings were a little heavier but the tomato chunks in the sauce tasted very fresh. A very classic New York style pizza and I couldn't even tell it wasn't real cheese. Vegan garlic knots were great too.

So, eating at this restaurant before the Bruce Springsteen concert, the other night was a thrill. Ate with lifelong friends. We shared several appetizers, including meatballs, a margarita, pizza, bake clams, and spicy shrimp. All were delicious. I had a seafood pasta with squid ink that was memorable. Lots of seafood and the pasta was fantastic! Nice bottle of wine at a reasonable price. Good service. Frankly, I think the prices were cheaper than what I pay in Austin area, and the food and venue were authentic and much better than in Texas!

Fresh mozzarella, a nicely thin crisped crust, sweet tomato sauce, and fresh basil makes this simple pizza taste great. The fried calamari also impressed. It tasted notably fresh--light, clean, and not overly chewy like pre-frozen versions can sometimes be. While I can't say for certain, it had that just-prepared quality that makes a difference. The Caprese salad was a great way to start the meal, with fresh tomatoes, creamy burrata, and a balsamic drizzle was a nice light start. The atmosphere leans old-school Italian, which adds to the charm and character. Service was fine--nothing remarkable, but no major issues either. That said, my overall rating takes a big hit solely for the restaurants ridiculous tipping policy choices rather than the food itself. The automatic 20% gratuity added to the bill was frustrating. The menu does indicate that 18%, will automatically apply, or will be 20% for parties of six or more. We were only three people, so it felt inconsistent and unnecessary. On top of that, the added cost for credit card usage didn't help. I don't mind tipping for good service! In fact, I tip well--but I prefer having the choice and I'm old school so it's the principle of the matter. Being forced into it, takes away from an otherwise enjoyable meal. Bottom line: the food is strong and worth trying, but the billing practices leave a bad taste. If those were adjusted, this could easily be a higher-rated experience.
